      Hello Mate, I still use Akadama, I even have a new Boa breeding setup you guys havnt seen yet in the works, ive been fiming it for a month, the only things I would change are this, not so much zeolite if any, no water changes ever (yes you heard that right) no powdered foods and only feed the tank once a week with a solid piece of food after the tank has cycled, for evaporation top up with pure RO.. Its this simple now.

    Hi Mark, is there any way to regenerate aqua soil by using e.g root tabs? Or would this not replace the nutrients in the soil that have been removed over time?
    I'm really interested to know what the negative impact of leaving aqua soil for over a year, and if there is any way this can be helped / avoided without redoing the tank.
    Any advice appreciated - Thanks!

      Hello Paul, Unfortunaly the answer is no, the soil is much more than just a fertilizer, it controls the pH and it cleans the water, once its lost those abilities there is no way to get it back to how it was originally.

    Iv got a 4 foot shrimp tank .i use a matern filter at one end with a moving bed bottle filter in the gap behind the matern and some lose media i use a lift tube and air line to send water from behind the matern fillter to the far end of the tank and a big sponge fillter with a 90 degree bend to send water back down in a loop i olso use a ugf box full of aqua soil . 3 foot of the tank is ugf baffle plates with 1inch of soil on top with to up lift tubes

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  2 роки тому

      Never been a fan of Maten filters Edward, you need to remove the entire thing to clean it and if you have hundreds of baby shrimp its almost impossible, I know some people will say you dont clean them but I dont like all that rubbish staying in the tank affecting water quality.

    • @edwardthompson3213
      @edwardthompson3213 2 роки тому

      @@MarksShrimpTanks iv developed a method of removing which is quite easy .i place a new seeded matern fillter in front of the old one and remove the old one wait for water to settle remove any baby shrimp all the old detritus stays separate from the tank water vacuum any accumulated mess and slide the new filter back into its original place . It is a bit of a pain compared to a normal sponge filter set up but the surface area and long life of cleaning make up for it olso if after a year your soil in the tank loses its buffer affect you have a separate compartment to fill with new aqua soil. Without affecting the existing tank . And on a 4 foot tank you can leave the compartment behind the matern as large as you need .i sometimes pick female and some good looking mail shrimp place in the compartment till she is berryed and then place back in with the comuity .it a bit like a breeding box with the exact same water parameters . . Great video. Love your new tank 👍👍

    Hello! I’m about to reset my shadow panda tank. I’m considering akadama and ADA Amazonia as soils. I do like having stem plants in the tank for nutrient export and viewing pleasure. Is akadama ok at growing plants? Or should I go with Amazonia if I am wanting plants? I also saw an article online that akadama buffers the water for 2-3 years vs 8-14mo with Amazonia. Have you seen the same results on water buffering?

      Hello Ginny, yeah if your going for plants use Amazonia if you can get it, Akadama is a little nutrient diffiecent I think but it cleans the water really well.

    Awesome video! Exactly what I need as my old tank started leaking. I’ve watched all of your soft water shrimp set up videos and they’ve been so helpful, it’s hugely appreciated. I noticed that you used to leave the akadama in for about 2 years then change it to reinvigorate population growth, so I was wondering why you recommend a year now? I find the scientific side of shrimp keeping really interesting so I’m just curious 😊

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you for the kind words sir, the cation exchange capacity (CEC) starts to be lost in soils after about a year, you can still breed shrimp in these tanks after that time but that golden period is normally in the first year from my experience, also as the soil ages it also loses it ph buffering capacity so A. The soil loses its ability to clean the water and B. The soil starts to lose its pH buffering capacity. A good sign the soil is finished is a rising ph and very low baby shrimp survival rates.

      Subwassertang is a type of aquatic plant that is commonly used in aquascaping and freshwater aquariums. It is native to Southeast Asia and is known for its distinctive, flat, leaf-like fronds that grow horizontally along the surface of the substrate.
      Subwassertang is a popular choice for aquarists because it is relatively easy to care for and can provide a number of benefits to the aquarium. It is a fast-growing plant that helps to oxygenate the water and absorb excess nutrients, which can help to improve the overall water quality and clarity in the tank. It can also provide a natural hiding place and foraging area for fish and other aquatic animals.
      Subwassertang is typically kept in low to moderate light conditions and does not require a high level of care. It can be grown either attached to a piece of driftwood or floating freely in the water. It is generally considered to be a hardy plant.

    could u share a link to where u bought the floodlight plz^^ (im also from norway and would love to know from where u get them). i would like to replace the light that came with the fluval edge (46liter), do u have any recommendation to what strenght of the light i should get for that tank, and maybe to how high over the tank it should go? plants in the tank are just some moss and anubias :). i recently set that tank back up after not using for a while and then saw how bad the light was compared to my other tanks. im planning to have a few shrimp in the tank aswell as some pygme coridoras once the tank is fully cycled (maybe nano fish or endlers later in the future).
