How about a good long in-depth update on this spectacular tank?
Now you're getting it ;) good job Mark. Keep it up 👍👍
My two favourite fish UA-camrs 😁😊
Thank you MD I take a lot of inspiration from what you do on your channel 👍
Thank you Jud
@@MarksShrimpTanks Yeah all good. Lot's of creators are and that's a good thing in my opinion. The more people we can get watching our channels as a collective, the better for the hobby and knowledge of everyone in general. So if you see something you think works well for me, nothing wrong with applying to your own content. 👍👍
Chilled and informative, thanks dude.
The light tip is gold.
Coming from zero experience or knowledge a mere month ago now, your channel has given me all the confidence and knowledge to take the dive and setup my first tank. Shadow pandas have taken my fancy. Seeing a real person do real things i think is what has helped me learn the most.
So once again a big thank you, for all the time and effort you have put into your channel and all the knowledgeyou have shared.
Looking forward to embarking on this adventure with you! Keep it up! 🦐
Thank you Jake, if you need help just ask.
Looks incredible man! I’m really looking forward to seeing future updates on this tank!
me too, can wait for the plants to grow in.

This is so cool and helpful! I love how detailed you go into the tank setup, I'm heavily considering getting some shrimps so I want to make sure I can do the best I can for them!
Glad it was helpful!
Best type of format ever!
I am newly obsessed with shrimp. I have babies! Just noticed today! :)
congratulations 😀
Super! Love blue bolts too. Yours are beautifull. Thanks for another great video. Hope your back is better soon.
Thanks so much!
Shimmering light appeals to me too. Very Bladerunner
yeah it looks cool doesnt it, Ive just ordered another 6 lights 😂
YES!!!! MY FAVORITE KIND OF CONTENT!!
well thats good news because this is what I will be doing from now on 👍
Thanks for your video. Can i ask about all your new tank set up need how much days before put shrimp in your tank. In my country they said need about 3-4 weeks for goood but i think so long.
My shrimp Sulawesi and bloody. Thnaks and hope you answer
Simplistic, ideal for shrimp, and looks great too. Win/win for everybody!
Thank you
Absolutely amazing! I feel like im watching a BBC docuementary with this stuff - shimp care at the highest level. What a great wee addition to any house :) I think shrimp are becoming more and more popular!
Wow, thank you!
Great instructional video! Thanks Mark!
Thank you for watching Carole
Nice Mark, Ill have to get me some blue bolts

Awesome set up Mark.👍🏻

Thanks!
Great video, mate! I really enjoy seeing the under gravel setup as well as the akadama and zeolite!
Thanks for watching sir 😁
Very nice Mark, looking forward to seeing the development of this tank for sure.
its doing very well so far
With seachem stability and prime. Do you find that it takes the full 7 days to cycle the tank or does it take longer
Really enjoying your content! However I didn't catch what you called the thing you put in the feed dish?
Fairly new to keeping shrimp. I can't manage too much with the Cancer, but I dearly love watching the shrimp. I would really appreciate any answers on:
1) what did he put in the feed dish?
2) what does it do?
3) why do you need a feed dish?
I have only seen people drop food in. Thanking you all in advance 😘
Love Akadama!
oh I know you do 😲😂
Love this video and tank Mark 👍
Can't wait to see its progress
Thank you Mark
Great set up video. Tank looks amazing too mate.
Thank you Daniel.
Been watching your videos for a long time. But only getting into shrimp tanks now. My question is . What type of brick you use and is there any worry of contamination from the bricks leching ?
Awesome tank Mark beautiful shrimp looking forward to seeing the progress of this project ❤
You and me both!
They look so cool!

@@MarksShrimpTanks can you keep them outdoors?
Great video Mark! Your videos are super helpful to new shrimp keepers, keep up the great work! Side note: my 1st caridina tank with CRS is 3 months in and doing absolutely fantastic thanks for all the information 👍
That is awesome to hear, do you have baby shrimp yet?
@@MarksShrimpTanks No babies just yet but I started with 15 no casualties and all are getting bigger and thriving.
Hello Mark, iam planning to setup a blue bolt tank. Since this video is one year old I was wondering if you would set it up the same way or would you change something?
Would you still use Akadama or a different soil?
Great video as allways 🤩
Hello Mate, I still use Akadama, I even have a new Boa breeding setup you guys havnt seen yet in the works, ive been fiming it for a month, the only things I would change are this, not so much zeolite if any, no water changes ever (yes you heard that right) no powdered foods and only feed the tank once a week with a solid piece of food after the tank has cycled, for evaporation top up with pure RO.. Its this simple now.
For the filter on the bottom did you run an air stone at the very end of pipe just before the end you siliconed? Or how did you run that diagonal underground pipe?
just to the bottom of the upright pipe Kevin.
Damn Mark that is a gorgeous tank ! Well done
I’m setting up a full rack for bee shrimp with proper ugfs and akadama and I can’t wait to get updates on this one !
Would love to see how much you feed and what’s your feeding regiment
Plan to take it very easy with this tank to make sure there is no cycling issues, I will give them a little food in a week or so and see how they react.
I cant find the plant on google , can I get correct word for both plant that on brick?
www.google.com/search?q=subwassertang&oq=subwassertang+&aqs=chrome..69i57.3522j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
Those bricks are awesome!
Glad you like them!
Nice setup i have a question what is cinnamon bark is a stick? what are the benefits for shrimps that stick give?
its antibacterial wood, the shrimp much it away until nothing is left, it must be boiled before adding to a tank though.
@@MarksShrimpTanks Thank you sir! :)
Looks great. Do you have a method of cultivating the Subwassertang or do you just recycle it from tanks? I have it tied to my pleco caves and have a noticible growth after increasing lighting. How are the plecos doing?
I just recycle it from other tanks, I started with a piece the size of a pinky nail 😂
Silly question but what was that thing you put in or near the food bowl?
Never a silly question, lots of people ask what that is, I made a video for it so I dont have to explain everything everytime .... ua-cam.com/video/0QqyDKN-ABE/v-deo.html
In regards to your comment about light - you want a bulb that has something called CRI (colour rendering index) the higher the closer you get to sunlight. I built a system using downlights and each bulb cost me about £5-6
Hi Mark, is there any way to regenerate aqua soil by using e.g root tabs? Or would this not replace the nutrients in the soil that have been removed over time?
I'm really interested to know what the negative impact of leaving aqua soil for over a year, and if there is any way this can be helped / avoided without redoing the tank.
Any advice appreciated - Thanks!
Hello Paul, Unfortunaly the answer is no, the soil is much more than just a fertilizer, it controls the pH and it cleans the water, once its lost those abilities there is no way to get it back to how it was originally.
what's the little thing you picked up after the bacteria and feeding dish?
ua-cam.com/video/0QqyDKN-ABE/v-deo.html
Hey Mark hope all is well. Do you still keep your shrimp at 150ppm tds what do you like your ec reading to be for boas
Hello Matt, yes always go by most recent videos and yes 150ppm tds or 300uS Conductivity.
Loving the lights. Interested to see how you fix the ‘short cord’ problem. 🇦🇺❤️
I have 20 meters of 3 strand water proof cable, I just need to open the light and disconnect the old cable and attach the new cable. 😁
Pardon, what is that glass tube you put in the feeding dish? I’ve not see anything like it before. What does it do?
ua-cam.com/video/0QqyDKN-ABE/v-deo.html
Might be a dumb question but regarding your under gravel filter - is the air hose connected near the bottom bend or the top bend?
Thanks in advance.
bottom bend but you might want to do it differently. like drill a small hole in the tob bend and feed it through that way, if it blocks on the bottom bend you cant fix it.
@@MarksShrimpTanks Thanks for the tip. I gather feeding the hose with an air stone down into the tube would also work.
Do you test the Ammonia, Nitrites and Nitrates before putting shrimp in? I have been trying this method on a new tank and my Nitrites are still high even with feeding the bacteria like you do.
I test everything, there is no amonia in this soil and only a very small amount of nitrates i add shrimp when pH has stabilized.
@@MarksShrimpTanks OK thanks. You do talk about the pH but I don't hear you talk much about the Nitrite levels when you are doing your tanks.
But I thank you so much for all your info. I have learned so much from watching your videos.
I dont think nitrate is such a big issue because most of my tanks I get no nitrate readings the tanks are run so well, only time I ever measure it is on start up.
Hey Mark, What was that little oxygenator you put in the feeder dish called for i have not seen that before.. i am having too many power cuts here and wondered if it would help for i have no power backup for my 30cm tank and last time i lost 3 tetra's .. thank you and really enjoyed watching as usual :)
yes they help here is a little video I made a while ago that tell you what they are in detail. ua-cam.com/video/0QqyDKN-ABE/v-deo.html
Iv got a 4 foot shrimp tank .i use a matern filter at one end with a moving bed bottle filter in the gap behind the matern and some lose media i use a lift tube and air line to send water from behind the matern fillter to the far end of the tank and a big sponge fillter with a 90 degree bend to send water back down in a loop i olso use a ugf box full of aqua soil . 3 foot of the tank is ugf baffle plates with 1inch of soil on top with to up lift tubes
Never been a fan of Maten filters Edward, you need to remove the entire thing to clean it and if you have hundreds of baby shrimp its almost impossible, I know some people will say you dont clean them but I dont like all that rubbish staying in the tank affecting water quality.
@@MarksShrimpTanks iv developed a method of removing which is quite easy .i place a new seeded matern fillter in front of the old one and remove the old one wait for water to settle remove any baby shrimp all the old detritus stays separate from the tank water vacuum any accumulated mess and slide the new filter back into its original place . It is a bit of a pain compared to a normal sponge filter set up but the surface area and long life of cleaning make up for it olso if after a year your soil in the tank loses its buffer affect you have a separate compartment to fill with new aqua soil. Without affecting the existing tank . And on a 4 foot tank you can leave the compartment behind the matern as large as you need .i sometimes pick female and some good looking mail shrimp place in the compartment till she is berryed and then place back in with the comuity .it a bit like a breeding box with the exact same water parameters . . Great video. Love your new tank 👍👍
Can I mix blue bolts with CRS ? What TB can I mix with without messing genetics?
you can mix all bee shrimp types including the tigers, but you cant not mix the genetics.
what is that think you put in the feeding dish?
ua-cam.com/video/0QqyDKN-ABE/v-deo.html
Is this the Akadama Ibaraki for Bonsai trees ?
Do you know if the bricks you use will affect the water parameters somehow? I live in Sweden and recognize much of your equipment, including the bricks. I have thought about putting bricks in my aquariums but I am afraid the water will be affected. Would you have any thoughts to share on that?
bricks are fine to use they are the same as terracota
New to the channel. :) Thanks for the content. A familiar flag in this video. :D Greetings from Norway.
Thanks for the sub Morton!
Mark great step by step, so you really like the bonsai soil for your shrimp tank? Thank you from NYC
yes I have used it for years
Does it matter what size the zeolite is?
I dont think so
I see you don't heat your tanks, what temperature is the room kept?
room right now is heated to 22c, outside the house its getting as cold as -20c at night.
what do use for night light? or you shrimps need them?
do*
I dont use night lights
Thanks for teaching us a new Scottish word! 🤣 🤣 🤣
next weeks word will be "noiumnae" 😂 as in are you going to the game tonight ...noiumnae
How long does the Akadama soil last or compared to Amazonia?
This just depends on the type of akadama you get but this is the same for all soils, some can last just 10 months while others last for years, my own opinion is if you can still get the original Amazonia buy that. 👍
great viddo and set up - enjoyed watching!!! I told you a few weeks ago that I was excited that a couple of my females had eggs. As a complete beginner I was very on edge about it all!!!! but delighted to say I have now got about 16 tiny shrimp swimming around - but I think only one shrimp actually had hatchlings!!!! The other one did not seem to come to anything - is that a possibility??? K
Thats awesome to hear, the shrimp are probably in your tank and you have not seen them all yet.
Could you explain the oxidator for me please @ Marks Shrimp Tanks ?
I can in video form, I was asked so much I made a video for it. ua-cam.com/video/0QqyDKN-ABE/v-deo.html
@@MarksShrimpTanks thank you Mark just watched and it was so helpful ♥️
Mark any plans for an update on this tank?
there was one kinda a few weeks later when I add 500 shrimp? tanks is doing ok we have some berried girls now:)
Hello! I’m about to reset my shadow panda tank. I’m considering akadama and ADA Amazonia as soils. I do like having stem plants in the tank for nutrient export and viewing pleasure. Is akadama ok at growing plants? Or should I go with Amazonia if I am wanting plants? I also saw an article online that akadama buffers the water for 2-3 years vs 8-14mo with Amazonia. Have you seen the same results on water buffering?
Hello Ginny, yeah if your going for plants use Amazonia if you can get it, Akadama is a little nutrient diffiecent I think but it cleans the water really well.
Is version 1 or version 2 better for shrimps? The interwebs are divided. 😂
Hi Mark! Any updates on EC GH ect. For the zeolite tank? It would be interesting to see how the parameters change over time🙂
all my tanks have zeolite in them? mouuuhahahahaha
@@MarksShrimpTanks so awesome! I’ve been trying to find zeolite and I’m headed to the organic garden shop to look. What I see on Amazon is mostly powders and Seachem stuff that’s way over priced.
Awesome video! Exactly what I need as my old tank started leaking. I’ve watched all of your soft water shrimp set up videos and they’ve been so helpful, it’s hugely appreciated. I noticed that you used to leave the akadama in for about 2 years then change it to reinvigorate population growth, so I was wondering why you recommend a year now? I find the scientific side of shrimp keeping really interesting so I’m just curious 😊
Thank you for the kind words sir, the cation exchange capacity (CEC) starts to be lost in soils after about a year, you can still breed shrimp in these tanks after that time but that golden period is normally in the first year from my experience, also as the soil ages it also loses it ph buffering capacity so A. The soil loses its ability to clean the water and B. The soil starts to lose its pH buffering capacity. A good sign the soil is finished is a rising ph and very low baby shrimp survival rates.
@@MarksShrimpTanks Thank you very much for the pro tip! 😊
What is the plant called that you tied to the bricks? Sorry I couldn't hear it properly :p
Subwassertang is a type of aquatic plant that is commonly used in aquascaping and freshwater aquariums. It is native to Southeast Asia and is known for its distinctive, flat, leaf-like fronds that grow horizontally along the surface of the substrate.
Subwassertang is a popular choice for aquarists because it is relatively easy to care for and can provide a number of benefits to the aquarium. It is a fast-growing plant that helps to oxygenate the water and absorb excess nutrients, which can help to improve the overall water quality and clarity in the tank. It can also provide a natural hiding place and foraging area for fish and other aquatic animals.
Subwassertang is typically kept in low to moderate light conditions and does not require a high level of care. It can be grown either attached to a piece of driftwood or floating freely in the water. It is generally considered to be a hardy plant.
where do you buy your akadama from ?

could u share a link to where u bought the floodlight plz^^ (im also from norway and would love to know from where u get them). i would like to replace the light that came with the fluval edge (46liter), do u have any recommendation to what strenght of the light i should get for that tank, and maybe to how high over the tank it should go? plants in the tank are just some moss and anubias :). i recently set that tank back up after not using for a while and then saw how bad the light was compared to my other tanks. im planning to have a few shrimp in the tank aswell as some pygme coridoras once the tank is fully cycled (maybe nano fish or endlers later in the future).
recently discovered ur channel since ive been obsessing over shrimp lately, love ur content^^ ure doing a great job at explaining things in ur videos, keep it up! :D
here is the link but I think they are running low on the lights because I cant order more, you need about a 20 watt light for yur tank and one that is over 6000k or a cold light make sure you pick the correct one before buying.
by the way reading that back I mean 6000Kelvin not kroner in case you thought the light was expensive ..😂
@@MarksShrimpTanks i replied yesterday but i cant see my comment anymore :o i said i was considering a light from the "ledlyskilder" website. V-Tac 30W LED lyskaster that has 2550lumen, cold white (6500kelvin), 110degrees spread, and cost 168NOK on the weekend black friday sale :)

Will the flood lights grow plants
yes IMO even better than normal lights.
I've been wondering: what kind of bacteria does Seachem Stability introduce? I hear alot of different opinions on bottled bacteria, that they're more of a placebo than anything else, since most bacteria need oxygen to survive, so I really don't know what to believe...
they are is spore form so they dont need oxygen 👍
But akadama doesn't lower the PH so how do you keep it low?
Yes it lowers ph 👍

I was under the impression beneficial bacteria was pointless in an empty tank, unless dosing ammonia?
the shrimp even though very small are an ammonia source, on top of this feeding is very light in a tank this size with so many shrimp. The seachem dosing I am giving people is the dose for a fish tank so if anything its probably over kill.
@@MarksShrimpTanks I mean before adding the shrimp (ammonia source) will the beneficial bacteria survive in there with nothing to feed on, so to speak?
❤hi there zeolite don’t change water parameter …
it does but not dramatically, it purifies the water.
