The angelfish are well and truly settled into their aquarium. So much so that territories have been formed. This is the first time I've seen fighting between fish and felt it should be shown to help anyone else experiencing the same.

they might be pairing, but just spread the food out and they should be fine. you might need to separate if it gets worse but it being heavily planted will help

Hi mate , I've kept angels before, they definitely get territorial when pairing , but not sure yours are old enough. I believe the best remedy is to keep a larger number maybe 8 or more , that way they quickly tire
and become less territorial .. hope that helps .. love your blogs by the way

Your Angelfish are still very young for breeding, what you are seeing is all about status and dominance. They are testing each other. Normal is for the whichever is submissive to show their belly as a sign of submission and then the dominant one will stop its aggression because point made and dominance is established. Many domestic strains have this trait breed out of them and the more aggressive fish does not stop and continues to beat the crap out of the submissive one.

Hey MD, yes, aggression between angelfish is normal. They make their own territories (usually with a ~50cm radius) and once breeding starts they'll pair off and stay together for life (or until one died/leaves), so you'll see breeding pairs sit together at the corner of the tank. They'll attack other angels that get into that radius, but if you have enough angels in there they won't be focused on one and nothing bad will happen.
If they bully one angel you'll know as he either won't come out of the plants (basically hiding all the time) or will be chased through the tank the whole time.
You can counteract that problem by overloading the tank with angelfish, that way they won't be able to build territories as there are simply too many, diffusing the aggression between them all or by scaping in a way that the territories don't have a direct line of sight.
They'll be aggressive and paired up even when they don't breed. If they get too aggressive you could remove the ones being bullied, though it might be that you have to reduce it to one pair of angelfish in the tank.

A bit of fighting is normal. Once in a while some of them develop into real bullies. I had one, also a black one, that was constantly stressing out the others. I had to bring him back to the fish store eventually.

Well, I had three couples growing up together in a 450l tank. They had their small fights, but over the time it became more intense and the bullying meant that one couple was totally detained from feeding, which resulted in their death. The tank was well structured with loads of places to hide and establish territories - so observe the situation and make the sacrifice to sell a few of your beauties when it starts to get more serious... I still have the two pairs and they keep fighting every time they breed - but now there seems to be +/- a balance of powers ;)
Thank you so much for all the inspirational videos, I really enjoy watching them!

    Hi MD!
This is Sharon from Michigan in the US. Love your vlog. I am an aquarist for decades and raised and sold angelfish by the thousands to a number of pet stores in my state in the past. Thought I would let you know about what is going on in your tank. Your tank is set up and kept beautifully, so your fish have quickly matured and are getting ready to pair off and breed. They are picking territory to lay eggs. The reason for the "gangsta" battles (lol!) at feeding time is the fish coming out to feed, and trying to guard their area at the same time. Totally normal, but when it becomes obvious who the pairs are, you will have to separate any pair you want to raise fry out of. Your tank is good size, but watch out for fish who might have to be taken out if they are bullied.
    So far, your doing great.!
Thanks for your great tips on aguascaping. Your tanks are beautiful. I'm learning a lot. Sharon in Michigan

My angels fight as well during feeding. Outside of feeding time they arent as aggressive at each other even when they are in close proximity. But on and off they do challenge each other as if they are defending their turf, like you mentioned. But most of the time, they are fine....Ohh and btw i keep my gold fish with the angles. In the beginning they do nip on the goldfish but i dont see any damage on them so i let it be for a week. After that it seems like the angles realize the gold fish is not out to challenge or fight them over turf and all is well.

Oh this is the fun part of keeping angelfish! Yes this behavior is totally normal and usually starts after they're a year old and have sexually matured. The only time you should be worried about it is the bullying. Bullying looks like when the aggressor specifically targets an angelfish and is relentless AND the victim is then constantly hiding and won't fight back ever. If your angelfish spar and they all at least eventually spar back then you're totally fine. If you do find you have a bully, you'll have to rehome the aggressor. If you do get a pair what will happen is the female will lay eggs somewhere (mine did it on the side of the tank) and they'll defend that corner relentlessly. If the angelfish get too stressed defending it (depends on what fish are in the tank, if your fish leave them alone then you might be good. I have semi aggressive nosy fish like a severum so that didn't help) or if the male doesn't figure out how to fertilize the eggs then they'll turn white and the parents will eat them. I hear it can take a few tries for the male to figure out how to fertilize.

My angels are aggressive with each other and the rasboras. Sometimes so aggressive they do a "turn sideways" and attack. Clementine slammed him/herself on the glass in one attack on a rasbora. Lowering the temp to 76 has helped A LOT.

They ain't gangsta they're chiclids😎 a bit of agro at feeding time is expected I'd be worried if there wasn't. Bullying would be if one was been absolutely relentless stressing to a point of illness or death. A way to avoid the feed time issue is to distribute the food across the surface better so they are not having to cross territory to feed. A black Moor panda would be nice with the crew and red cap. Pearscale will add variety, or just do what you did with Ember shop around and just pick one you really like the look of. 👍

My angels would have a go at each other at times but it was never a serious problem. They never damaged each other. I think it was a territory or possibly a personal space type thing. I found that tank size was important. I had a 35 or 45 gal hexagon tank. This tank did very well. The shape gave them a deeper tank. Angels like to move up and down. I had around 10 angels in that tank. Then I had a 150 gal tank. The fish all loved it but I had more difficulty keeping the water quality right in the tank. Plus it was much more expensive due to filtration system.

I find all angels have quite different personalities. Some are more aggressive than others. Most of the time a little fighting is normal, and nothing really too bad, so I wouldn't worry much. Just keep an eye on them, to make sure that none develop into and absolute bullies who stress out or actually really hurt the other angels.
Again, this doesn't seem to happen too often, but if it does I would reccomend separating that angel from the others, and maybe putting it in a different community tank. I had an EXTREMELY aggressive female angel, but since I moved her to a new tank with just some congos, corydoras, a pleco, and some other fish that aren't angels, she has been absolutely fine.
She's been on her own for years now, and her behaviour towards other angels still hasn't changed, and she is definitely happier without them. Much brighter in colour, and a lot less stressed.

I have angels in my tank and in my tank I have pair they laid eggs a couploe times but never succeeded... wathever if the other angels come to close to tje female of the pair then thd male attcks them. I think that is why they attack each other or maybe it is just territory as you said. Graet vlog as akways!

Angels get larger than yours are at the moment. And once they pair off... you may want to take the others out. ;)

This is completely normal. Remember that they are cichlids which can be scrappy. Just keep an eye on them and be prepared to move someone should they get to the point of damage. It doesn't often come to this but occasionally it does.

I had four large black angels who were constantly fighting. They lock their mouths together and have a sort of"tug of war" contest. Unfortunately two of them had their lips ripped off and died of their injuries 😠. I have had to separate the remaining two. Strangely enough they show no aggression towards any other species.

My goldfish were fighting a lot.
Its most times because the tank is to small.. and territories cross eachother.. so either reduce fish or spread food on both territory

In my store i have had angels that where worst than what you have, the only solution that worked for me was to put the gangster ones with other fishes like like molly, sword tails and stuff.
