this has nothing to do with the pedal I just want to thank u for being a great teacher and artist. my kids and me enjoy watching u play and learning from u u are a part of our family and everyday routine. thank u for helping make my home happy and full of music.
I have this pedal and I'm going to use it right now
Netanel Rosner me too
Just bought it too.
How good is it
Im getting it for Christmas
Netanel Rosner ok
I had a great time playing around with this pedal! What Gear would you like to see me cover next? Thanks for supporting "MartyMusic"
Marty Music there's these pedals called protune pedals their a little more expensive but I would like to hear how those pedals sound
Could you compare the ds-1 and the ds-2?
Maybe an affordable delay?!
Marty Music can you make a lesson on Sunday bloody sunday by u2 please this in the video p.s. your the best
An affordable Analog Delay?!
Loved the lesson, btw.
Doesn't boost the volume as much as other pedals - that's a con? Thats a pro, bro. Serious distortion even at low volumes.
This way when you transition from clean to distortion during a song you don't have to mess around with the volume knob, your output stays consistent
@@pietro6227 That's why you use soundcheck or setup time to get your volume levels dialed in. You should NEVER have to mess with volume on pedals during a show, unless you're like Mike Einziger from Incubus, and just enjoy tweaking pedals on stage. lol
@@mikeanderson1370 Yeah I realize my comment didnt make much sense in the first place cause even if a pedal boosts the volume too much you can just dial back the tone to your liking
Hey guys. I just started and was wondering. So I already have an amp and cable for the guitar. Does it have to be a certain cable to plug into the pedal and amp. Or does it have to be different. Same with the guitar and amp.
@@mikeanderson1370 seriously one of my favorite guitarists!!!
cheap pedals, expensive pedals...cheap guitars, expensive guitars..none of that matters if the creativity isn't there. Experimentation, good song writing and good guitar playing will get you places no matter if your equipment is cheap or expensive. If all you want is collect rare pedals for yourself and not contribute to the world of music then yes, by any means you are more than welcome to spend thousands of dollars on gear so you can play your favorite covers.
Well, sometimes it matters - for example, when I got my Fender American Special guitar (not super expensive, but still), I found it way more versatile than my cheapo Squire one. That being said, I agree with the essence of your comment, i.e., that creativity is key.
Please read my reply again. I said "...sometimes it matters..."
Gear can be terrible and make you not want to play, or be great and make you want to play. A good Strat/Tele is fun and sounds good. This amp featured in these videos sound great.
Tone ALWAYS matters. I don't care how good your songs were written. If your instruments sound like ass, cause you didn't care about your tone, your well-written songs will STILL sound like shit.
Hey man, whatever makes you happy.
I love that you're still teaching guitar! From a guy who watched you back in 2010
I’ve had this pedal since about 1983 it’s tough as nails and still kicking ass. Love this pedal!!!
I love DS-1's, and they're not expensive. I play Strats, and the tone control on the DS-1 lets you dial back harshness. I have used two at a time, one with around full distortion, and the other with less. You find them used for a song. Not just for big humbuckers like above. If you like Strats, this pedal is fine. (Here's to Captain Beyond.)
Neck pick-up, level 5-6, distortion roughly 4-5 (o'clock), tone 10-11 o'clock. It'll melt your face even if you have only an average amp and cabinet set-up. People who talk sh** about this pedal don't know what they're talking about.
There's like 100 billion boss DS1s out there for a reason. It's just a really great pedal.
@@yallimsorry5983 i have that same peddle amd i love it i paid 50bucks for it brand new on sale great peddle for the mobey
i also have a looper from boss i just love their stufff
Orange, hard to find a rhyme, John Lennon said door hinge rhymes with orange. It sure does what it says on the pedal, thanks Marty, I like this cheaper gear stuff. How about a Reverb pedal, also would love to hear a PRS SE and a guitar with P90s. You always have such a positive vibe Marty, awesome teacher and man.
Ray Ross I have no idea what rhyming orange has to do with anything, but I just wanna say:
Fringe
Cringe
Flinch
Grinch
Finch
These words don't rhyme with orange...
Ikr, unless you mispronounce orange, like oringe
im pretty sure it was eminem who said that!
Vincent Prakash Hmm who do you think he stole it from, John Lennon one of the best song-writers in the 20th century who died when Eminem was 8 years old, doubt he would have stolen it off an 8 year old.
Sorry Marty but I might have to steal that intro off you and pretend that it's my own to friends. Ha. Awesome. Keep them coming.
No problem David! It's all yours buddy!
Bruh thst intro is so smooth tho
@@kateastrophe621 oh, yeah, that's what it is.
I'm a little late to the party, I know lol...but....
HOW TO MAKE IT NOT SOUND LIKE CRAP......
(#1) Tone stays below 9 o clock. (aiming left)
(#2) Distortion stays below noon. (aiming up/center or left)
(#3) Use with warm pickups. High output pickups, like EMGs, will over distort it and it starts to break up too much and just loses all clarity.
(#4) Use with amps that aren't completely clean. It sounds best when used to add to what your amp is already doing. That said, amps that already have a little break up in their clean channel....as in...a Fender Blues Jr....maybe a Vox 30....
(#5) ALWAYS leave the DS-1 turned on. Again, it's best used when adding to what your amp already does. Using it as an addition to you dirty tone is best.
I.E. songs that have a clean part, then a dirty part, ...just leave the pedal on, but roll back your guitar volume a tad.
At least in my ears, this is the best sounding you'll ever hear a DS-1.
My set up was:
1965 Gibson MMDC with a single P90 pickup
Fender Blues Jr Combo
Boss DS-1 (with above settings)
string gauge was 9-46, I believe
Some times I used an old Peavey T series guitar..worked the same way.
I left the DS-1 completely running the entire show...if I needed extra balls on the solo, I kicked in a boost pedal like Hotone Liftup. It sent the DS-1 through the roof. lol
It's actually a decent pedal, both for guitar and bass. I like to keep shit simple control-wise. It's one of the few pedals I've heard that still sounds good when you crank the distortion all the way up.
My preference for a distortion/crunchy tone is an MXR Prime had it for about a year and it works wonders.
Marty’s face says it all at 4:11. He’s freaking rocking his @$$ off!
I have build myself a relativly cheap pedal board using only mini pedals.... (tube screamer > tone city Golden PLexi > tone city Tape Machine > TC Ditto Looper)
Maybe review mini pedals?
really loving the review on pedals. helps anyone like myself whos on a budget and still wants good sounds to play around with. differently going to be looking around for myself for this one just to play around and get some feels. thabks again Marty
The Zoom G1Xon was my first "real" pedal and i think its perfect for any noob player like me. It's 60 to 70 bucks and comes with a TON of effects to mess around with.
kurt cobain used this pedal.
sigh...
jeff dubuque another sigh
It's juts on guitars and anything kurt used everyone knows he used it so you don't want to use guitars even if you like em, cause folks would be like, "O u tryna be reincarnation of thee kurt cobain?! fuckin poser." etc etc
jeff dubuque yes in 1988 and 1989
He used fuzz, a pedal with more mids and less bass and treble. It gaves a fatter sound.
Marty I just got this pedal for Christmas, once I can get a new cable to be able to use it, I'll comment on how it has performed for me, I got it used though so I may run into the same issue you have had sir. Anyways Marty thank you for the music, the videos, all the teaching, and your time. Love you Marty merry Christmas and happy New year fella
Joe B it has been a great device to play with
I'm planning to get one on Sunday. This will be my first and probably only pedal I ever will use.
I told myself the same thing when I bought mine. Then I plugged a wah pedal to it and it changed my mind haha
TheLegendofXantha as a bedroom player, if I had to choose one, it'd be my looper :-)
That’s how we all start...
I've had this pedal for years. Still holdin up really well!
That Les Paul is such a beauty !
This was my first and last distortion pedal. Hey, it worked for Steve Vai for a long long time. Case close.
Casually just starts playing teen sprit
Yeah 😂
Was really hoping for something from bleach.
@@llogan2786 Bleach is so underrated imo
He plays in the beginning blitzkrieg bop by ramones
@Thomas Wood Yeah, love buzz is a cover song though if you didn't know xd. But yeah Bleach has so many good songs in it. I think that Blew is their masterpiece.
Have you ever done a tour of all your guitars? It would be interesting to see them all
4:18 thought you were gonna play paranoid 😂
That's a great looking Axe mate. I've got 1 very similar to that but it's a honey burst. keep rockin buddy.
My first guitar pedal and it's awesome, I'm glad you're showing off the Boss pedals Marty
good one marty !! plz do more jimi hendrix and john fruciante
I used to have the Boss GT8. It was awesome. Not so user-friendly for disabled guitar players, but hey it produced good sounds. Marty, I love the channel. I've been a fan and subscriber since you were over on Guitar Jamz. You've taught me many songs, sir. Thanks for all you do.
Thanks Marty, love these pedal demo vids. I bought one of these years ago and hated it, took it back the next day. I would however recommend the BOSS Turbo Distortion, it was good enough for Prince :D ..... Keep Rockin'!
Been using this pedal for a very long time, I simply love it, and for the price, you can't beat it!!
Pro tip if you have a guitar with a switch and 2 volume knobs and this pedal you can turn the rhythm knob half way down and the treble knob up to have a volume boost with the flip of the switch.
aaaaah my first pedal, i really love it
thanks for the great review Marty! I appreciate you showing the different gain ranges of this pedal.
the sweet spot is on the tone knob, tune it down until you get a fat tone, it's great.
Getting one soon and I’m soo happy!! Thank you guitar center guy for the pedal!
WHAT is the finish called on that Les Paul? Flamed tobacco burst? That is one of the coolest burst LPs I have ever seen!
I have this pedal and it's great. Can get a bit muddy when paired with my Blues Driver though so I tend to use them separately.
Thought that intro was 'my best friends girl' by The Cars until you hit that pedal 🤘
I got this pedal cheap right around the same price. I am going to get another and mod it out. I heard it's easy and a fun beginner project with pedal modding.
First pedal I got back in the 80s. It's still in use today.i love putting my 'board away and just plugging this into my amp. Simple.
I have one. Not bad when you want pretty heavy distortion. Marty looked to be having fun with it!
Roll some of the treble off the pedal sounds so much smoother that way!!
The DS-1 gets a lot of grief from people, but I love mine. It took me a little while to learn how to dial it in so that it doesn’t sound like a can of bees.
I keep the tone knob low and run it into a nice tube amp right on the edge of breakup and it really sings! It’s the best $25 I’ve ever spent on a distortion pedal.
I used to run my rig right into a mixing desk. The ds1 never shined running direct. Now I have a Pro Junior mark 4, and the ds1 sounds awesome through it. It's especially good stacked before my JHS Morning Glory.
Just bought a used DS-1 and very happy with it. I can get a similar heavy distortion by stacking other pedals (OD into Fuzz), at nearly five times the cost 🙄. Good to have all the options available 🤘.
I'd love love love to see the muff metal pedal that all the metalcore players rave about. If you could play it or someone could comment on how it sounds that would be sick
Hi Marty, at this time me and my brother we are looking for a distortion effect, so thanks
for your brand new video! Prdichvost
I’m officially sold. Thank you for the review🙏
Thank Marty for this amazing video and that nice playing. I hope you do more of this specially the metal stuff.
The pedal was ok. The Les Paul and your playing is fantastic. With your Les Paul, would you review a Fulltone full-drive 2, and a Wampler hot wired V2?
Hey Marty. Amazing work your doing. Love your way of teaching. Keep up the good work. God bless.
I really appreciate that Istvan! Thanks for supporting my new venture "MartyMusic"
I love your new channel Marty, glad you´re still rocking after all these years man, I learned so much from you haha
Would like your thoughts on multi-effects pedals and whether their worth it or if we should stick to individual pedals
So much of the late 70s - early 80s rock and metal sound came from this pedal, it would be much harder to find a legend from that time that didn't own one.
It was followed by much more advanced pedals with more control over the effect, however this rugged little boss ds-1 is still in widespread use from garages to the studio to the stage.
That is a fine distortion pedal, I know a lot of that tone is in Marty’s hands but those are some good tones!
Marty...really you do a great job! I am a n old school 70's, 80's 90's hard rock guy, and you play what we want to hear!
I have a Berhinger distort and overdrive pedal. Sounds great and it was only $25 on Guitar center.
what is the difference of overdrive distortion and gain?
XXLORDIKXX what gain does is gain it like how much you amps speaker outputs, so when there is too much gain, it will partially distort your signal. Distortion changes the sound, not the output
Gain is amount of signal that it's being fed into the input of a device, distortion and overdrive are two ways a signal can clip, distortion is aggressive and overdrive is more mellow
Great playing, and I love the DS1, but WHY would you have the tone knob all the way up for the WHOLE DEMO??!!!
pair it with a tube screamer and the sound becomes amazing
Nicely done, Marty. I'm 67. have been playing over 50 years. Yikes! I finally bought a DS-1. I use a Boss SD-1 overdrive, but needed more for some of the songs my band is doing.
The DS-1 gets a bad rap in some camps and there are plenty of "You're using your DS-1 all wrong" videos.
Avoid the negativity of these self-proclaimed "experts." Trust your ears, and look for honest reviews/demos like this one.
These can be had used for cheap. If it's not your thing, move on. You're not out a bunch of cash.
I use this pedal and I was thinking this sounds a lot like my guitar tone. I was thinking my setup sonded a little better in parts but I use a SD-1 into DS-1 into a fender blues deluxe with a Les Paul. SD-1 adds a lot of thickness to the DS-1.
I have exclusively Boss pedals. Would love you to cover the Harmonist....still struggle to get a good handle on that one....since your Blues Driver review I am looking to get that pedal as well. Hopefully "Santa" will get it for me!!
This was my first decent distortion back when it first came out, previously there were fuzz pedals, good all rounder
Thank you so much for doing a review because I am actually going to buy this when the whole coronavirus thing stops now and I didn't really know if I should buy it and now I am positive. Thank you
Positive for corona?
I just love Modding these! They're cheap and by changing out basically ANY part in them you can get a whole different pedal experience.
If someone hates the ds1 there eather not using right (what kind of signal goes thru it )or bought the wrong pedal for what they want one thing I found is the ds1 hates active pickups
Just got the 535q cry baby love it ... great sound : )))
The original ds1s were made in Japan and the transistors and board soldering are a completely different quality, from late 70s to mid 80s. Look for used gear stamped Japan. Their level adjust is just up a bit to get even pass through, say about 2 of 10, and full level control is a strong boost. My pedal is from 82, I bought it new then.
The SD1 super overdrive from then always has a great level boost. I also use it to reduce guitar level sometimes to get better tone from a big amp by not having to turn the amp volume too low in small spaces. The CE2 basic chorus is another boss one I have also made in Japan era. They are really sturdy pedals.
I have the exactly pedal as you and I’ve been thinking about replacing it with another distortion.
Marty I have learnt every song I know from you
you are the best teacher I could have
keep up the good work!!!!
I swear by my DS-1's. I use them on my Strats and Teles. If you have a no-overdrive amp like a Twin Reverb, it is the bomb.
looking at the level of distortion the ds1 is set on, most of the saturation is coming from the amp, the ds1 is rounding it off nice though, that's how i use my pedals lately...
i play hard rock and metal.....is it good for metal and stuff really?
For a bedroom distortion pedal which one would you prefer ? DS1, DS2 or RAT ?
You read my mind. Was really hoping you'd cover this. Thanks a bunch as always!
Thanks!
Wow what a nice pedal! I will buy this one! Is it recommended to use that for my fender telecaster? 😅🤣 maybe better for my strat?
That Les Paul is stunning despite you playing a Chilis riff on it.
I got this pedal specifically to mimic the tone in Sweet Leaf...
I just bought this pedal today. Wasn’t going to until I seen this! Great pedal for the price. Thanks, Marty!
i use one of these on many of my songs / clips, you can get a good sound for sure i rekon.
I use one of these for my bass and it sounds great
I.love.that.guitar. And that pedal, I want it now. Now I know what to get for Christmas thanks for the vid!
That was great. I'm glad to see you're having fun man. I'm buying one. Thank you for the video.
love ur jam session!! maybe make a video where ur playin just rythem kinda like a backingtrack.. Only now we can all jam w the best mr Marty Schwartz
love these pedal reviews, Marty!
I like my DS1. I like to run it with some light chorus.
Can you demo the JOYO US Dream pedal? If you have already done this, what is your opinion of it vs. the BOSS DS-1 or ROWIN HOLY WAR pedals ? Thank you for educating me and all the other more challenged guitar players!
I got my Boss DS-1 for free. I just purchased the Danelectro FAB metal pedal online I heard it was a good pedal for the price .
eXpLiCiT NJ The FAB Metal is shit m8 . I regret buying it.
I have a humbucker single single made in Mexico fender strat. I love this pedal with the bridge humbucker. It has this "wall of sound" type quality. I'm just wondering if there is a way to minimize the "scratching" sound without cutting the high end? Thanks and I love your vids.
Hey Marty, could you do an acoustic lesson for 'When you love someone' by James TW? Thanks!
Just bought this pedal for 50.00 plus warranty... I'm going to check it out some time today!
Which other distortion pedals would you recommend ? I've always been a boss guy, but I'm looking at mixing things up.
Fulltone OCD
Soul Food
would this pedal be good for trying to get a NIRVANA sound?
Yeah kurt used one
Zander Loftus i didn't know that thanks man
Jack Tilghman Well they were made a bit different from the one Kurt had, but you'll be fine with a DS1 or a DS2
A muff pedal would do the trick
Kurt Cobain was known to use one!
Hey Marty! Just thought I'd let you know that this pedal was released in 1978. Since you said you didn't know how old it was.
This is a good pedal for me because I have to keep quiet at home but I also want heavy distortion and I just bought this
Marty! that's the pedal I wanted to hear! thanks!
I have this pedal and its sick af, dope vids btw, keep making more
The no volume boost thing is more like a plus for me.
