I watched this episode with tears. Viserys, despite the pain , came for the sake of his daughter😭 When he decided to sit on the throne himself, he did not allow anyone to take him to the throne, but as soon as Daemon helped him, he did not refuse him. The moment with the brothers touched me❤
The real fraternal relationship despite all the conflict was well played and deeply moving.
I managed to keep it together until that scene and then I lost it

Honestly this is the happiest possible ending for Viserys. On his last day of life he gathered enough strength to walk on his own all the way to the Iron Throne (where thankfully his brother helped him the rest of the way), managed to get his family together for a final dinner, and miraculously managed (if only for a brief moment) to bring the family back together.
Yes he was in agonizing pain, but his last thoughts before he died were of his family gathered around him and having a genuinely happy dinner.
This episode was also slightly triggering for me because mother fought stage 3a breast cancer on and off for almost 10 years and when the radiation and chemotherapy hit her their hardest she looked as pale, thin, and drained of energy as Viserys did. And just like Viserys my mom fought longer and harder than anyone thought a human being was capable of. So while it was only for a brief moment I was so happy that Viserys actually got to see his family happy and together again.
It sounds like your mother was a very strong person. My deepest condolences.

I hear many people saying "Viserys is weak"...But honestly, how much strenght is needed to endure all the pain, misery, and the responsibility of the crown? I don't think i could. At least, he bore it until the very end.

The only thing I still don’t like is what he let happen to,his wife Aemma to ensure he got a son. Other than that, he has been a solid guy.
@@KCohere33 the only choice there was they both die or try to save the child. It was awful but that was the choice. I know many mothers who would say save the child if it can be saved. If it was a choice between her or the baby i would be right with you but it wasnt. Thats why Laena chose to die by dragon fire. It was the same issue Aemma went thru
@@mikea3098 He could have told her what was happening first so she wasn’t screaming in fear and agony as they yanked her roughly, held her down, then sliced her open while completely conscious. It’s not the same as Laena. She chose her way to go and was still in control.
I think what people mean is he isn't a king who kills people or conquers which is absurd because he never needed to.

He caused her more pain sure but he is not responsible for her death because she was already dead.

I love how when Aemond Targaryen was raising a toast to his nephews as *_"strong boys"_* , Helaena Targaryen was the only in the room that didn't know it was an insult. So innocent a soul and unfortunate she ended up with her dirt-bag husband/brother.

I love Daemon challenging him to say it because he knew he would be dead. That made me laugh so much along with him just chopping his head in half.
That last scene was absolutely brilliantly written, because it makes complete sense for Alicent to believe Viserys was talking about their son Aegon, she has no clue about the "song of ice and fire" but she DOES know that Viserys once had a vision that his son Aegon would be king. So for Alicent it's only normal to assume that's what Viserys was talking about when he said "the prince that was promised".

Viserys was only 52 years old, It just shows how the throne ravaged his body. The most dangerous seat in the realm indeed.
Plus having leprosy made those cuts 10 times worse in case you didn't know leprosy is a very horrible disease similar to the flesh eating virus but it compromises your immune system so you have to be very careful not to accidentally hurt yourself or if you do you have to get the injury treated right away otherwise your injuries will get infected really quickly so if you had leprosy back then you were basically fucked

It's ironic that the seemingly 'fake' emotions at the dinner was actually most authentic we've ever seen them. It was the only time they were NOT putting on their masks. It shows that without the line of succession and primogeniture and all the other royal madness mirroring what existed in medieval Europe, these people could've been really good friends. But the system they lived in destined them to murder each other. It's like being born into rival blocks in southside chicago. You don't have much of a choice. The dinner sequence was so despairing because they all knew it was the last moments of solitude, but at the same time they probably did briefly delude themselves into thinking "maybe, just maybe things will work out". They’re all unwitting participants in a tragic theater that’s about to unfold.
This episode was tough for me, and I'm sure others as well, because almost all of the scenes with Viserys had shades of what I experienced in the final weeks before losing my father. Everything from watching him writhe in pain and discomfort just laying in bed, the seemingly nonsensical conversations, to the willful determination to sit the throne. Different throne, though. What my father was staggering towards telling everyone to let him be was the bathroom. lol There's more truth reflected here than a lot of people want to think about, or come to know. What a performance by Paddy Considine. That march across the room to the Iron Throne was epic.

Viserys's funeral in Episode 9 will be HARD to watch. I'm gonna cry a bucket full. Facts. Paddy, holy shit sir. You just killed it this season. It will be a travesty if you do not get the recognition you deserve. Wow!
Oh man, and I'm already crying. I'm not prepared for his funeral. Oh yes, sir Paddy deserves every recognition he can get.
Aemond vs Daemon got some anime rivalry energy
Love the episode so much because it really shows Alicent and Rhaenerya do still care for each other its just all the manipulation by others that tore them apart.
How tragic is it that Viserys worked the hardest to keep the family and realm together, yet he caused the bloodshed to come with his final words…
I have to applaud the consistent and touching performance of King Viserys throughout the series. He portrayed a truly benevolent and caring patriarch. His speech at the dinner-table was tear-inducing. With his every breath you could feel the sorrow, joy and hope for the people around the dinner table. Even though he was not born a great warrior nor a great conqueror, you believe he would die a thousand deaths if he knew it would save the life of any single person at the table. So with the last ounce of his fading strength, his only plea is that when he no longer has any life to live - nor give, that everyone at the table...simply not strike against the other. So tragic.
R.I.P. King Viserys, first of his name.
Love your genuine and emotional reactions, you're always fair and try to see things from the character's perspective. Don't worry you're doing great, the only pure and kind person in the show just died, everyone else is a shade of grey.
Viserys said a few episodes before, that he regrets that he never was tested in a battle.
The walk to the throne was his big battle and he was victorious.
Viserys and Daemon were the BEASTS of this episode.... Viserys with both his performance in the throne room and at dinner....
Daemon is pretty much always a beast, but the way he says "say it", then takes Vaemond out (but leaves his tongue).... And when the whole room is exploding at dinner, after the King was carried out, he just stands up and stops it... And EVERYONE STOPS!!!! Even Aemond, and he is just itching to see if he is better than Daemon....
And the 2 of them together, when Daemon helps him the last few steps to the throne, and the puts the crown ack on his head..... All hail Viserys and Daemon!!!!
Daemon Targaryen actually loves his brother and you can clearly see it the first episode of the season at Aemma funeral Daemon said to Rhaenyra "Your father needs you more now than he ever has". There was also many times where Viserys exiled him from kings landing and Daemon never lost his cool for his brother. And now in episode 8 where he picks up the crown and help his brother to the throne clearly shows how much respect and love he has for his brother.
exactly, Daemon could've quite easily taken the throne from Viserys if he wanted to, yes he may have wanted to be king originally but never at the cost of his family, all he ever wanted was to protect his family and keep the Targaryens strong, anyone else would want the same for their families. Daemon just has his own way of showing it, but the scene at the throne showed everyone that Daemon was always there for his brother.

Also, the people of Kings Landing LOVE Daemon as he prefers the he people over the royal political bs.
The entrance of Viserys, walking through all that pain to sit the throne one final time, is definitely in the top 5 iconic game of thrones moments now. That was incredible to see.
I have the doubt if that tea was for preventing a pregnancy or to kill her? Poor Dyana, that actress was really good in those couple minutes she had on screen
I'm pretty sure Alicent had no reason to kill that serving girl. She just gave her moon tea.
The dinner scene was hilarious 'Why? It was just a compliment." More like a provocation. How calm he was after taking the punch. Shootout to Aegon instead of doing nothing he joined the 'brawl' and stands by his younger brother. Even if you hate Ser Criston you can't deny that he isn't a good teacher. Trained the boys well. Puberty really did turned Aemond into a 24/7 savage maniac. The standoff between Daemon Aemond was epic. I have a feeling that Aemond admire or look up to his uncle. Well who wouldn't when you have the most feared warrior at the time in your family right? Daemon found his next opponent. It's scary the similarities between him and Aemond. I guess if the marriage between Daemon and Rhea was going peacefully - the outcome then would be Aemond. Truly father and son. I bet Daemon is thinking to himself everytime he sees Aemond "So, that me in my youth." The Blood of the Dragon runs thick. Aemond is keeping his rage for his lost eye. Y'all won't be ready when the dragon finally is unleashed. (Payback above Storm ends will be so satisfying)
And give Paddy Considine already his Emmy! Another class acting from him. I cried while he tried walking up to the throne and when his crown felt and Daemon picked it up for him 😭

This man showed UP for his daughter and spent the last of his energy making things right. I lost my dad a couple years ago so this was really emotional for me to watch. Such a good episode
I can't pause Paddy Constandine's performance enough. Anyone who's had loved ones go slowly, eating away before their eyes will recognize wow real it all seemed. Outstanding work by all involved. I was left speechless.
I agree with you about the shades of grey - it makes the conflict more of a tragedy, with everybody having a point of view that we can empathise with. It's very sad watching circumstances move them into inevitable conflict.
There's some amazing acting in this episode, starting with the poor girl who was raped. Viserys was incredible... He's been my favourite character I really felt for him. Paddy Considine absolutely deserves an Emmy.

@@sefieezephiel9851 while you are correct Dorne isn't part of the realm. The titles are correct as Aegon the conqueror used them and all subsequent rulers have copied. They even say them in the show this episode when Viserys enters the throne room

He's doing it in retaliation to them being dicks so it's fair game really. They just couldn't handle a taste of their own medicine.
RIP King Viserys: he was a weak king who made bad decisions because he was a good man who loved his family. A living, breathing moral conundrum. Shoutout to Paddy Considine for an AMAZING performance. If he doesn't get some sort of award for this, then there's no justice.

Viserys was wearing the lord of blood outfit from elden ring which George RR Martin was also apart of.
I think both Rhaenyra and Alicent realize it has gone way too far and now try to mend things, but they've raised their children to hate each other for a long time, and it's far too late to reverse that.
Rhaenyra reached out several times with an olive branch, and Alicent basically slapped it away.
@@monlovchel Rhaenyra created most of the mess everyone is in now. Alicent is the one who kept trying to mend things until episode 5, when she finally gave up on Rhaenyra.
The dinner scene is a masterclass of melancholy in simplicity. Viserys watching the grandkids in a last dance before the Dance. Fleeting moments of bliss. Everyone hoping for the best, expecting the worst. For something so uneventfully peaceful, the passing was one of the most foreboding & viscerally filmed deaths I've seen. Book Viserys also doses off to the great beyond in his bed, after telling stories to grandkids. The king who was most unlike Aegon the Conqueror in life ends up being most like the Conqueror in death.
Ok enough jokes. Now the serious stuff. "You're no son of mine" - Alicent getting crossbowed in the loo on mother's day confirmed lol. Ep 9 is The Green Council😱!! Cue the Hoes Mad beat😤!! Our religion, tradition & patriarchy upholder Queen Mother & our redpiled Homelander King will make Westeros great again🙃/s

He does, but I'm sure he would've remained civil if Luke didn't trigger him by laughing about the roasted pig placed in front of him on the table. I would react the same way, because I have been teased in similar ways as a kid.

And here comes next episode's plot twist : The king is still alive !
Honestly, it's been 4 episodes we've been thinking he was gonna be dead at the next episode, so, as the Reel Rejects have joked about it, it feels like the plot twists of Game of Thrones was to kill off several beloved characters at random times, and here in House of the Dragon, the plot twist would be that this king who seemingly dies at the end of each episode actually keeps living on for the longest time, outliving the rest of the cast ^^ !
No but seriously, I've never seen any other performance from Paddy Considine, the actor who portrays Viseris, but his performance here is just a masterclass of acting.
And it's really a fascinating character arc. It's really rare to see the final days (years... decades...) of a slowly and gradually decaying character for such a long extended time, dragging out his pain. That painfully reminded my own father's final few years, when Alzheimer got a hold of him and I could see him deteriorate in the span of just a few years (minus the missing arm and eye). That did hit hard to watch !
Viseris also showed that strength is not only about being muscular, or being able to slay knights, soldiers, or monsters. Strength can be formidably shown when you're at Death's door... and you can still walk up the Throne room and the Iron Throne by yourself, despites falling apart, to help one last time your daughter when she really need help ! You just can't help but really feel for him, to the point that even Daemon, the ultimate swagger who's always the first at laughing at others people's misery, takes his brother in pity and actually helps him (from the moment he and Rhaenyra entered his room, you could tell he was uneasy to see his brother in such a sorry state by staying behind the curtain, which is extremely off-character for Daemon. All leading up to that moment when he helped Viseris to the throne and put his crown back on his head. All of these were so powerfully symbolic !)
Also telling the weird relationship he and Aemond now have, as they both mirror each other : Aemond seems to have become a fan of Daemon when he beheaded Vaemond (I know, it's getting a bit confusing), and Daemon when he confronts his nephew seems to recognize his younger self in him, like he had a look like, "oh shit... This one's trouble... I was just like this when I was younger".
It's really rare to have such intricate storytelling and clashing characters arcs with each other, nowadays. It's great to see that Georges R.R.Martin is still at it. I'd almost forgive him for not finishing the Song of Ice and Fire novels if it is to give us more of this show's outlines.
If you want another show that also have fantastic writing (and acting) almost on par with House of Dragon, I really recommend you Andor, the new Star Wars series.
It's VERY different than any other Star Wars content from before (movies or series), both scenaristically AND visually or musically. It really is its own thing, with its own identity ... and it's formidable.
It's extremely slow, but it's aso one of these rare series where the characters actions dictate the plot and not the opposite (like Arcane), which is all the more incredible given it's a prequel of a prequel (Rogue One), who's sandwiched between the first 2 trilogies, so there should normally be not much room to navigate (as we've seen in Obiwan), but gosh this show is doing it beautifully ! It's slow. Very slow. But so good ! Extremely dialogue heavy, lots of plotlines, but all the characters, and the writing and acting are all fantastic (Stellan Skarsgard steals the screen !) ! and when the action finally hits, there is so much already set up and built up tension that when it explodes, it hits real hard !
Give it a try. At least the first 3 episodes in one watch (they're tied together and form one single story). And you'll see how you feel about it afterwards.

I like how you aren't cheering for Vaemond's death. What he did was the exact same thing Ned did: he stood up in a room full of liars and told everyone the truth: that the official heirs to the Iron Throne are bastards who have no legitimate claim. And just like Ned, he lost his head as punishment for speaking this truth.
It annoys me to no end to see people celebrating Vaemond's death, while those same people were probably heartbroken when Ned was beheaded. I can't stand hypocrisy like that.
Don't call Daemon's wife a whore, maybe? This is Daemon we're talking about.
Those are emotional type people. They see world emotionally then logically. Ned was with emotions. Vaemond was with logic

Even though viserys wasn’t a good dad, or that great king, his death is so impactful. He was the last one holding the whole mess together
Wow, what an epic episode in so many ways. And thanks to you, Magy, for actually paying attention to and "feel" what's going on. And not making stupid jokes over emotional scenes like some other reactors I've seen.
Paddy Considine did such an amazing job as Viserys, especially in this episode, he absolutely deserves all the praise he can get.
King Viserys I Targaryen might not have been a king known to make good decisions but he was a good man who loved his firstborn more than anyone. When Aemma Arryn past away Rhaenyra Targaryen became the most important person in his life and he kept by his promise to protect her. Honestly for me Viserys is the strongest of all the Targaryens mentally he could have easily gone mad like most Targaryens did with everything happening to him but he kept sane throughout the entire season.
And now the DANCE begins 💯😈 Also this show is the best show on 📺 by a country mile because it has a perfect balance of casting and writing. It's basically peak GOT for me at this point and IMO it will surpass the main show because I have always liked the DANCE story better than the main story.
P.S I like the Blackfyre story better than the main one as well.

Like Alicent said in the last Episode: " A Eye for a eye"....The King refused it and lost his ee.
The most consistent and "the pillar" of this show is King Viserys. His unconditional and undying love for this family never waivered. That is all he ever wanted. It emphasizes the exact opposite of the politics and game playing everyone else is consumed with...Public opinion says he was a weak king...In my eyes, he was the strongest and truest.
A king can't be like that.

Vyseris I "The Peaceful", he has no enemy, he is loved by everyone, he sacrifice himself for doing everything to avoid war. He is the strongest of everyone.

Aegons father didn't have any expectations for him because he wanted Rhaenyra to be his heir. Alicent and maybe Otto have been pressuring him, if anyone.
Vaemond knew he'd loose his tongue (or probably his life) because of this. But he didn't give a fuck and said he'd rather die than seeing a bastard claims his right. That man's pride is on the next level.
I don't know how anyone can watch this and come off with positive feelings for Vaemond. The man is kicking up a fuss because this is his chance to rise, not because of blood or pride. If it was blood he was concerned about, the marriage proposals ensure that Velaryon blood will remain at Driftmark (and on the Iron Throne).
Those "bastards" have been legitimized. All three instances that can announce them as illegitimate have approved of them. Laenor, the husband accepted them as his children. Corlys, their grandfather and head of the house in question accepted them, Viserys, the highest authority as king, accepted them. You cannot call them bastards if at each level of authority that can denounce them, they have been approved, for all intents and puproses they have been adopted into house Valeryon.
Vaemond is overstepping, going against his cousin, his uncle and the king. And that's all ignoring his biggest transgression of going over to petition in Kings Landing while Corlys is still very much alive! He heard that Corlys is coming home and that he may live, which means that Corlys will have an opportunity to shut Vaemond down, so he ran off to Kings Landing before his uncle could come home. Vaemond is grasping for power.
@@KolyoSofiata Thank you! I think most people didn't realize this. He's been wanting the Driftmark throne since the beginning. If it was about blood he would of been happy about the marriage proposal and left it alone. He even made a secret deal with his families enemies just so he could steal Corlys seat. He got what was coming to him
I think Otto Hightower and Myseria the Brothel owner are the grand scemers in this show. I think they were working together all along the entire time and are soley responsbile for Viserys decay over 19 years by poisoning him slowly.

@Supriya Mukherjee Thats why they did it slowly over a period of years. Giving Otto enough time putting his lineage into the royal line via Alicent. If they'd done it quicly it probably would cause more problems for the throne and th realm seeing Rhaenyra as queen. I dunno Im just speculating maybe they gave him something that caused the illness. Remember when Daemon and Rhaenyra were in the brothel together some errond boy snitched on them, he went first to Otto and then to Mysaria. That was very suspiscious.

Viserys is a really great character, the most sympathetic person in the show. He loves his daughter really much, and it makes me sad to see how his daughter has screwed up everything he has done for her.
That was his death scene in my opinion, he did some great acting on the show. Now that he is gone, the family is gonna come apart
Hey Magy👋❤️ I definitely loved the episode and as always your awesome reactions, it made me sad seeing the king in such a state while he tries to still keep things together because he truly believes in peace and togetherness as a family.
Viserys is the only decent person in this show. Straight up. (With the exception of innocent babies, and Helaena, of course lol)
Everyone else's decisions are so back-and-fourth, he's the only one who has remained consistent. And he cares SO MUCH about his family, matters of state wear at his soul.
