I was not the worship leader but did play guitar as a not yet believer at a church. I feel like God used that experience to bring me closer to faith. Never underestimate the grace of God

Great thoughts. However, I will respectfully disagree on one point...that being the engagement of the attenders. Because the crowd isn’t as engaged as you think they should be, in no way is an exclusive sign that the one leading is either effective or not. Every church has a unique worship culture, and the wise and experienced Worship Leader understands that and leads them not only where they are, but also where they need to be. Not every church culture embraces high engagement, even if you the leader are and you want them (the church) to be. Sometimes, it’s a process that takes time. A video that is submitted is a snapshot of where the church is and not where they will eventually (and hopefully) arrive. What’s the takeaway...don’t judge a book by its cover. Thanks for ALL the great videos you guys do...it’s a great tool for Worship Leaders!

That's true about every church has it's own worship culture. Some cultures are outgoing and fun while others to the extreme are sullen faced like they're at a funeral. But they say they are praising God.
As far as a worship leader *_leading and understanding his audience's culture and leading them not only where they are but where they need to be_* comment - I wonder if the audience feels they are right where they need to be - maybe they don't need a leader to lead them to a place they don't want to be - maybe they (the audience) is content where they are. And in that case they are content to listen to someone up front and maybe the audience might sing along on a few parts of the song if they feel like it.

Crimson Road I agree. I think an engaged congregation is a good barometer, but all churches have “off days”; times when people are sluggish, weary, and slow-starting. It’s true that we should be coming into the church with praise and thanksgiving, but the reality is that people bring baggage with them.
There have been times I’ve led worship passionately, yet the congregation didn’t seem engaged. Those are the times we have to trust that God is doing something despite the outward indications to the contrary.
I think a better barometer is how engaged in worship the leader is. I can’t lead anyone to a place I’m not going.

Thanks for sharing these tips! I’ve been leading worship for over a decade, and have been traveling and leading at multiple churches for the last few years. I recently got hired for a regular Sunday morning service, and a regular Wednesday night youth group leading a praise team for each group. I would say that having so much experience and being in a network of musicians and church leaders really made a difference. They trusted that I would do a good job, and said I was their first choice and wanted me to start right away. I’m thankful to have those years of volunteering and the hard work of filling in at a different place every week. That prepared me for a regular leading position. Hope that encourages someone!

Lydia Walker hi there, I would love to be in that position, ultimately being able to do music evangelism for a living, but I don’t even know where to start......🙏🏻

Love you guys. Changed my major from music education to ministry and started a ministry for young musicians that want to become a worship leader by teaching them whatever instrument and having devotions on being a leader. I've learned so much about being a better leader through your channel. Just thank you for inspiring everyone! God bless!

Next week you guys should talk about whether or not worship music has been infected with mediocrity. I hear that a lot and many people would say that worship music is not creative and very repetitive. I would love to hear what you guys think about this.

One of the best worship leaders I have ever met was Ron Kenoly. He was anointed! That is really the key 🗝
You cannot lead worship without the presence of God inside! This is also vise versa. You cannot use your anointing if God's presence is not invited in the invironment. It is a waste of time to send in a resume to any church. Most churches have become program orientated and that is a sad fact. Some churches are Anointed and they are praying for that anointed worship leader to seek, find, knock and open up the Church Doors with Worship that makes you want to stay for a second service!

This was a great video, not only on aspects regarding worship leading, but team building skills. We live in an age where everything appears as a seam to a very "specific" viewpoint towards a certain genre of whatever is discussed in the realm of that genre's specifics, but through the wisdom of God's eyes, you can take any type of knowledge from any field and apply it to every other growth in life whether it relates to the church or maybe other deeper understandings that have the need to be met through the community, which I feel is the only way to anywhere real. I laughed a few times during your presentation because it involved realizations I found within myself that I too... need to work on and to be able to laugh about it, versus feeling down about it. - It has ALOT TO DO with your approach to people and I want to do the same for others. Serving is the same as having a guest in your home, town, or just in front of you in general and providing an experience of love no matter what the medium is, whether it's food, a party, being a listener, a great advisor, it's the greatest feeling in the world. I found this video by specifically looking for a video on how to be a church worship leader simply out of curiosity...

I think there is a huge difference between Worship Leaders and Worship Pastors.
20-30 years ago you could get a job in the ministry being a good vocalist and ok guitarist.
But the role of worship leaders has evolved to a very Pastoral role in many churches. You need to be able to preach, work with youth etc.
In addition to all these great tips, get some theological training, some pastoral training etc. We are not just band leaders anymore. You will need a wide toolset in the Worship Ministry.

    Hey guys..
    Sorry for a long blabla..
I had that miserable experience of being hired as worship leader.. Was told we want to transition to more of the contemporary worship style...yeah no..
Three months interim thank the Good Lord..lol..I'm not going to talk bad about them but it wasnt a good time. I've lead for many years in Alabama and Virginia, but in a much more free/charismatic type setting. Voted in on an 80/20 split which is big in a Southern Baptist church in Alabama..but voted out by the decon board at the end of the 3 mo...Lead / Served many services before moving forward with taking the position.. but wow how things shifted..So yes it's so important to fit the church you apply to work in. I do believe God sent me there and He did do a work through me there I know for certain. ..So..Trust God and allow Holy Spirit to lead you...not to go neccesarily where you fell lead to go...As you guys said Prayer and Fasting and trust Holy Spirit is leading you where your needed. All of this happened in the summer of 18 and I honestly haven't felt the press to lead after all of that.. I've been involved in ministry since 2003 in different positions and capacities... so stepping back hasn't been bad... gained focus and got back into writing..I've been asked to lead next weekend at a Lg house type setting for a well known speaker/worship leader who has recently moved down to Florence Al from yalls way in NC. Anyway..im going to shut up..lol But thank you guys so much for all you do, yall do a great job teaching ,presentation, production..all of it.
Thanks and God Bless all you do!!

What should I do if I’m leading at a church where the congregation is SUPER reserved and they don’t physically show that they are into worship? I intern and lead at a church where the congregation looks bored and tired through video but after service they always say how much they loved worship. They don’t stand unless asked to and they rarely even sing along with ANY of they leaders we have. Suggestions?

Ministry only ever becomes a paid vocation if it’s something that you’re already saying yes to anyway wherever you are at whatever capacity you can. Volunteer somewhere playing in the band. Show up consistently and be sincerely dedicated and offer to be able to fill in if the leader is out off for the week. No one is going to pay you to do ministry you aren’t already doing. You have to get yourself to the point where you almost can’t so anything else because you’re so given to it. Going to Seminary is also a plus.

I’ve been on various worship teams for almost a decade now. I’ve played guitar, sang, put together set lists for Sundays and has experience in almost everything except having a title of “worship leader.” How can I find a volunteer position as a worship leader when I’ve just served as a musician/vocalist?

  • @SeachingShepherd

Yes, I agree candidates should be praying and seeking God's will, but I don't think I heard y'all discuss how much praying you do in the selection process. Enthusiastic overt participation can sometimes be a shallow indicator; especially with so many worship leaders looping shallow, repetitive songs in the key of G. As a worship leader and singer/songwriter, I believe the four most important factors are: 1. Does the person consistently live a Christian life all week long? Listening to ColdPlay and other secular groups all week long, isn't consistently living a sold out Christian life. 2. Is there a genuine anointing of the Holy Spirit attending the work? 3. Does the person have a pleasant voice? Most worship leaders have never had breath support and voice training and it shows. So many try to sing above their natural range, producing thin, nasally, flatted notes. 4. Is the person one of those who loves to show up for practice? As a former member of the Orlando Regional Promise Keepers Band when I lived in that area, I will always cherish the memories I have of working with committed Christians, who were also consummate professionals.

I got a question. I'm from germany and we dont really have a fulltime Worship position at our churches. But what do you guys think about to promote yourself, with your own songs to recordlables or to ask different churches to have a worship-night at there building? I got the mindset if god opens doors its good but its not humble to try it yourself.
Like, you need to be discovered instead of putting yourself out there.
Would be nice to get your opinion.
Thanks for your job, you guys doing great.
