Amazing story! Thank you Joe Rogers for finding the 100 year old Portlaoise Plane in Sussex and help return it back to its home town. The people of Ireland will be very thankful and proud!
Great story Joe ! all your hard work has paid off. Fantastic to find the plane in one piece. looking forward to the time when it is returned to home soil.
Incredible story - what great perseverance from Joe - honouring not only his father but the history of both flight & Ireland. Puts Portlaoise on the map. Would make a wonderful film.
Joe I am delighted to see the pictures and history of Aldritts plane on UA-cam its a credit to the individuals who built her. Not many Portlaoise people know of this plane built in their town, its a pity to see it remaining in England, what a lift it would give to Portlaoise people and to Laois Tourism. Maybe the people of Portlaoise might get together and undertake the return of this piece of our history, and display it in an appropriate place for all to see. I note the photograph at the end of Wiliam and Joe in 1965, at No 9 Marian Place, your brother Mick`s (RIP) house.
Hi Willie. Delighted to hear from you. The good news is the Portlaoise Plane is now back in Ireland with plans to have it restored and eventually put on show. Naturally I couldn't agree more with what you say and I sincerely hope that you are keeping well. Best for now, Joe.
@@theportlaoiseplane8236 Joe I am happy to hear the news that the plane is back in Ireland and will be restored. I had the opportunity some years ago to rent the workshop in which that plane was built, but opted for a larger workshop on the Dublin rd opposite the General Hospital, this workshop that I now own was built by the late Paddy Mathews a local builder and publican, his pub being on the corner of Grattan st, and now owned by Liam Casey. My workshop was once owned by the late Mick Kavanagh , former teacher in the old CBS school and originally from Kerry, he may have taught you while you attended the CBS, Mick used the premises for growing Mushrooms. Incidentally while I was looking to rent Aldritts workshop from Donie Aldritt he informed me that they purchased the premises from Odlums the flour millers for the gift token of one Shilling, as Aldritts carried out quite a bit of work for Oldiums one job being turning the large rollers for crushing the grain, and to check them for true they placed one roller on top of another and and checked with a flash light for any imperfections, this demanded great skill and knowledge to attain perfection, and achieved by men that were dedicated to their work and took pride in what they produced, something that is quite rare today, God Bless Joe.
The Portlaoise Plane. Hi Willie. Thanks for all the info. I can tell you that the gentlemen who repatriated the plane to Ireland are Alan Phelan & Teddy Kenneddy who are to be congratulated for successfully completing this mammoth task and surely deserve the gratitude not only of the people of Laois but bearing in mind the historical value of this rare gem, then the people of all Ireland. Alan & Teddy are giving a talk to the Laois Historical Society on Thursday next, 28th March 2019 in the Midland Park Hotel, Portlaoise, at 8pm to whom all are invited so hopefully you'll be able to attend what I know will be a very enjoyable evening. Go dti an cead uair eile, Joe.
@@theportlaoiseplane8236 Hi Joe, thanks for letting me know, I will try and attend this talk about Aldritts Plane, I will be visiting the late Frankie Aldritts wife Nora and I will inform her, Nora and I have had many discussions about the plane and I am sure she will be delighted to hear about its return. Since reading an article you published on the plane I became aware of its existence, not too many people know of this plane as I have brought it up in many conversations, I do hope the people of Portlaoise realize the importance and significance of this piece of history and get behind it and support Alan & Teddy going forward. In my opinion Joe, the return of this gem is the most exciting thing that has happened in Portlaoise in a long long time, thanks to Alan and Teddy and yourself Joe for Flagging it up, so that the likes of myself and others would be aware of this planes existence Take Care Joe.
