      I know the comment is old but totally agree. Nolan made other popular movies(TDK trilogy, Interestellar and Inception) and sadly The Prestige went under the table.
      It's kinda weird to say it tho cause it is one of the best movies in the last 20 years and is arguably Nolan's best movie to date.
      Edit: didnt mention Memento cause I think that one is very underated too.

      I used to work at a movie theater, and our nametags had our favorite movie on them. My nametag had the Prestige, and people would constantly come up to me, tell me loved that film, and proceed to explain the plot of the Illusioner

    The Prestige is definitely one of my top three favorite Nolan movies and in my opinion a very underrated Nolan movie as well.... And by underrated I mean, in it doesn’t get the same claim or breath as say, Inception, The Dark Knight, Memento, or even Interstellar for that matter.
    So it’s nice to see video essays even an Earthling Cimema breakdown on a movie like The Prestige so that it can get the recognition that it deserves.

      Jack Müller I think he means the way in which the characters went about creating their magic tricks. The Bale character used twins, while the Jackman character went on to use a series of clones to make the trick work. The question I’d ask is which one of these is practical effects, and which is cgi? I thought I knew when I first started typing this response, but the more I think about it, I’m not so sure

    It's an awesome film. I'm usually a reasonably hard viewer to fool. Films are easily predictable to me. Not this one. This one had the structure of a magic trick. Cutter's metaphor works both ways. I got blindsided by the plot so many times that I was completely at its mercy after a while, not even trying to decipher its secrets anymore, just watching in amazement, in a state of perfect and absolute suspension of disbelief. The only problem with the tactic this film uses to make me achieve _viewer's Nirvana_ is that it make's it hard to watch it a second time, just like a magic trick which reveals itself at the end loses its appeal.

    • @marcosrivera1620
      @marcosrivera1620 2 роки тому +4

      I think the rewatch makes it even better. You start to notice things that you didn't notice before. Like the guy that stands up and yells about the Tesla machine in London was the same guy we see at the end, who was working for Edison. Or how when Angier is reading Borden's diary, it starts off talking about how they were two young magicians, just trying to make a name for themselves. It leads you to believe it was Borden and Angier, but it was telling you that Borden had a brother. Such a great film, even with the subsequent viewings.

    Punisher season 1. I'm a vet, so my perception should be biased, but it seems like a lot of the initial discussion of the show (which is all I've gotten through so far) focuses on survival and how coping with the rush of NEEDING to survive (Russo's best night of his life) and the standard civilian lifestyle where we go most of our lives without ever questioning "Will I be alive tomorrow?" I'm uncertain how long the show maintains this perspective, or even if I'm just projecting, but it does feel like a lot of the characters are telling themselves "I (hate/love) the reality that I (need/escaped) an enemy constantly threatening my life."

    Okay, hear me out - the cloning device NEVER worked. Let me explain why.
    1. Borden sent Angier over to Tesla literally just to screw with him. The likelihood that Borden would have actually sent him to a guy who can make him a cloning machine on accident is VERY unlikely.
    2. We only know everything that “happened” when Angier was with Tesla because Borden reads it from Angiers book. Therefor basically that entire portion of the movie is told by an unreliable narrator. That extends further to pretty much every scene where we see “evidence” of the machine working including the first time he used it when he shot the double. None of it ever happened.
    2. To believe this you have to believe that Angier used the actor double the entire time, and that ultimately the actor was the one who drowned in the tank. This would be possible because at that point in the plot Angier is wealthy and can pay the actor enough to keep him in line. Furthermore, if he knows that he’s sacrificing himself every night, why would he start freaking out once he gets dropped in the tank and not just accept death?
    3. In the scene when Borden shoots Angier in the warehouse, you only ever see one tank with one person in it - probably the actor. The rest of the tanks are probably empty and are the tanks that you see being carried out of the theater earlier in the movie.
    4. The blind stage hands aren’t blind so that they don’t see Angier die. They’re blind not deaf, so if Angier freaked out every night when he was dropped into the tank they would know that something was wrong. They’re blind so that when Angier eventually frames Borden, they would also assume that Borden committed the murder.
    I’m probably forgetting some evidence but that’s the big stuff.

    • @AFR0PR1NC3
      @AFR0PR1NC3 7 років тому +1

      Will Peterson
      1. If he only killed one body double, why would he have them move the tank every night?
      2. Right before he dies, he try's to show Alfred the tank he's next to, to demonstrate that there's a clone in it, but the one we see on camera is a different tank. Why would he want to show an empty tank?
      3. If he really did just use a double, then he must have used and killed at least two. One that Alfred tried to save that ended up in the morgue that he's accused of killing, and one that's still in the tank. Why would he bother killing more than one?
      The only way I could see this working is if he found 100 lookalikes with acting ability, and killed them every night so they wouldn't get cocky and betray him like the one at the beginning of the movie did. That sounds more absurd than Tesla making a magic box to me though.

    • @wayneconway1
      @wayneconway1 7 років тому +7

      The reason he freaks out in the tank is because the machine makes an identical copy. Identical. Meaning the copy doesn't know he's a copy. He thinks he's been transported and the copy was left in his place. This is why just before he shoots himself the copy tries to say that he's the real one. So Angier will do the trick one week, be convinced that he is the real deal and the copy is in the tank but the following week wind up in the tank, obviously shocked, while the new identical copy is still convinced he is real and has been doing the trick every week. Then the next week he ends up in the tank. But the copy always believes he's real and has been doing the trick every week because to him, until he does the trick himself he has all the memories of doing it every time and surviving.

    • @hendrik6720
      @hendrik6720 7 років тому

      Wayne Conway I wanted to believe "the clone machine was also all just a trick" until your post--it's just to fiendishly horrifying to put out of my mind, like the perfect picture of a new ring in dantes inferno. chilling and brilliant.

    • @pbass2500
      @pbass2500 7 років тому

      AFR0PR1NC3
      As far as moving the tank every night, that would go back to the example of the old Asian guy who always pretends to be crippled; he’d move empty tanks just to fool him into thinking that machine works.
      As far as far as your second and third points, I agree that’s the biggest fault in my argument. The only explanation anyone who agrees with me has come up with is that he went through the trouble of making wax doubles for the tanks. It does sound kind of absurd to me, but then again so does Borden magically/accidentally sending him to a real life closer.

    • @pbass2500
      @pbass2500 7 років тому

      Wayne Conway
      That makes perfect sense, but unless the blind stage hands are accomplices to murder every show it doesn’t explain why they don’t hear him freaking out and know something is wrong.

    The prestige is about... well, the "the prestige." It's about how far we are willing to go to finally take a bow to the validating applause, admiration, envy, and even jealousy. The movie does a very good job by hiding its meaning through the suspencful-thriller-like drama the viewer experiences when watching it. But, it does indeed have a deeper meaning.

    If your transporter turns into a replicator, (a replicator that doesn't even need raw materials, it makes matter out of nothing) why wouldn't you just replicate a gold brick or a stack of cash?

      Its because Angier and Bordon are Professionals unlike you. A Pro will see the project until it is done completely.

      Angier already had plenty of money- he wasn't doing what he was doing for cash- he first just wanted to perform magic, then his wife died, then he wanted revenge- and then his desire to figure out the best trick ever, and destroy Bordon took over.
      Nothing else mattered, even his wife's death stopped mattering to him.

    Guys! Do a philosophy of Ricky Gervais. The guy is known for having an obnoxious persona on stage which he says is under the guise of irony and satire. He makes fun of celebrity culture when he has now become ingrained into; he tweets about flying on a private jet. From interviews it seems he's actually a bit conflicted on this subject, especially since he grew up and spent his pre-40s on nearly no money. He's known now as a hard worker, but before he wrote the office, he just used his exceptional intelligence to wing it through life at the bare minimum (he never even wrote a CV!). Upon actually trying with the office, he found a tonne of money but was sad that he could not share that wealth with his deceased parents, and that he did not pull his socks up sooner. He was always on top of his class, and he studied philosophy. Do more research and you'll find he's lead an interesting life. It would be great if you could dissect what he's about since you gave Bill Murrey a similar treatment. There's also a tonne of material on his personality on hours of a radio station called XFM that he did which is all over UA-cam.

    Interestingly enough, although you could argue that all clones of Angier are the same person, the first time he uses it the one within the machine survives, whereas every night of the trick, it’s the one who teleports away from it. That means that at some point, Angier version 1.0. must have died (if we believe that the teleporter really does work as we think it does and it’s not one of Nolan’s tricks).

    There is this cool Australian show called "The Code" with its second season out. It has a very strong commentary on Bureaucracy. If you end up watching it, there is a "Philosophy of" episode there.
