I feel like, in America anyways, iPhone versus Android for privacy doesn't even matter considering every big cell phone carrier is giving your data to the government directly

True! But I’m still going back to a flip phone. I’ve had enough technology. And it’s going to get worse.

In Norway there si something called Bank ID. It is issued by the bank and it is used for everything governmental where you need to log in sam as to your bank. In the they was small device, keycode generator. Then it was possible to use it on phones (any type!) trough SIM toolkit. I remember wondering what was that on my Nokia 3310. :-) But now, from 1st of September they are turning off SIM toolkit option, but lucky us, we have app for that shit now. I guess we are lucky until they don't turn off keycode generator.

We still have "calculators" to generate Secret Codes in France (looks like a little calculator that you stick your card in), but those are being rapidly replaced by smartphone apps. :(

    • @VGGx

@@ScottiesTech We have type without card, it is just generating code on press of the button.
That type of "calculator" with bank card in it I have for Croatian bank.
I have to agree that they are pushing everything to damn apps. 😕

Personally, I'm utilizing the beta DuckDuckGo feature to block 3rd party trackers via blocking those connections from leaving the device in the first place, on top of having my default search engine set to DuckDuckGo (whom don't keep track of who makes the searches, and get the results via Bing, without the filter bubble interfering with the results), plus more. It's useful. I definitely don't trust iOS, and actually trust it less than Android. Also, I need the customization Android offers, just like ease of Windows, and there are several applications I need that simply aren't available on iOS but are available on Android. I skip Samsung and others that give the excess bloatware, just like ones lacking physical buttons and charging cords. Currently I'm using Motorola's phones (actually still using Android 9 on phones from just before Lenovo bought the company, as the newer ones from every company keep being garbage in my opinion).

Somehow IOS is, let's say, bluffing. When I had an iPhone we would catch the recorder recording periodically and other times we would see the camera light on; it really freaked us out. There is no way anyone could have accessed my phone to put spyware on it. Also, you have to wonder why the Simpson's TV Show did a show with them walking down the street with an Android and all the businesses have signs that say, "No Androids Allowed". / Thanks, for all do, love your channel; and, Congratulations on your marriage!

At night, pop your sim card out instead of turning the phone off. The carrier cannot get any data without it.

Regarding G ac on android - you don't need one. Aurora stor from f-droid can get and update apps from G's PS. If the app still complains that it was not from G's PS, get the apk using aurora and look up pm command (using adb shell - pm -i something)

i just got my first ever smartphone less than a week ago because like you i could participate in less and less activities of daily life. 😅 i chose a fairphone 4 (so android) because i liked the idea of it lasting a long time (probably not as long as my dumbphone though which lasted almost 20 years 🤭). i am currently in the process of turning everything off that i possibly can as well. i now will also use flight mode before turning the phone off. 👍🏼
naomi brockwell also has some helpful content (for non-techies like me) that i need to rewatch. ✨

The easiest way to transfer files back and forth between a Linux or Windows PC and an Android device is to use KDE Connect. So long as both devices are connected to the same wifi network and are paired the sharing is easy and wireless. The transfer takes place solely over your network.

Sometimes I use an android emulator on my desktop PC, for those cursed banking apps! The thing that pisses me off, is this new trend of banking institutions to force everyone to go trough Google Pay or Apple pay, that makes me to use debit cards just to avoid giving my data to Google or Apple!

Scottie, thanks for making the video! As far as I know, I have never watched your channel before and found this video a good rundown of the issue from an angle that the "normal" person can understand.
I have had experience with both Android and iOS on both phones and tablets for at least the last ten years. I worked for a time for a company that did software testing, with some work on both platforms. Both have their strengths and weaknesses. My personal use of Android and iOS phones started with Android, went to iOS for a while when I got into a phase where I wanted to test out Apple gear, then back to Android recently. I was drawn to Android initially by the lower cost, then drawn to iOS as I got a Macbook, getting me into the Apple ecosystem or device sphere. Somewhat later, I got an iPad Mini then an iPhone. I have also used Linux extensively at a moderate level (I am no developer or software guru/hacker), using many different distros and learning how to do modifications to the user interface. I feel like I have a reasonable, but by no means extensive/intimate, level of understanding of these platforms. I have recently moved back toward Android for mobile use (though still using Linux for desktop use). Reasons I moved back toward Android are as follows: 1. Sideloading: I wanted to be able to install whatever applications I desired to my device. This is easy to do on Android and basically (as yet) impossible on iOS, at least without jailbreaking. I don't like the fact that Apple can limit apps solely to the App Store and that they have total control over which apps are allowed on their devices. Rubs me the wrong way. I also have been upset about Apple's decisions to ban apps off the App Store in China (maybe elsewhere) at the request of authoritarian governments, often in an attempt to clamp down on protest. Stated simply, Apple can control your application choices. 2. File system access: I like that with Android I can simply plug my device up to my computer (specifically Linux, but also Windows if desired) and access the Android device's entire filesystem directly. This, outside of access to photos, is essentially difficult to impossible on Linux and overly restrictive on Windows with iOS. I don't like that I have to use iTunes to transfer data between Windows and iOS devices. I don't like that it is seemingly impossible to just copy a folder over from Windows to iOS through iTunes (They want you to copy over one file at a time which is extremely inconvenient). With Android, file system access on Linux is essentially just like plugging in an external hard drive when you connect your Android device.
All that being said, privacy is what you make of it. No device, no matter how secure and private the OS/software is, is truly private if it is connected to a network. Practice best security practices for your particular use and enjoy whichever mobile OS you prefer using.

I use Telegram on both iOS and Android devices. Some pics and videos are not "allowed" to be saved in iOS but no issue at all for Android. Apple is either actively monitoring your iPhone or have modified the App store version Telegram. Privacy for Apple device is just as bad as Android.

This represents my thoughts as well. I don't see Google's Android as a more private solution, they sell all data and search history instantly to 3rd parties.

    Thanks
Thanks Scottie, have been using iOS and Apple devices for 15 years since I go out of the corporate environment and yes, Apple is on more user friendly but much safer security wise. I have an iPhone 13, an Apple iPad Pro and an Apple MacBook Pro and they all talk to each other (when I tell them to) and life has become a lot easier. As you said, you must be careful when using apps, I keep Google off each device by using other search engines whenever possible. I have never had a breach and have much less intrusion, much less ads and get updates from the latest iOS as to how many trackers they have blocked, something you won’t get from any other provider. I also took precautions to make sure iOS security is set to the most secure (if there is such a thing)! Thanks for your videos and thoughtful suggestions.

I use Motorola cuz it's more basic....
    But I 1st go through & disable every app I don't want...
Including Google Play Store.... That I can enable the few times I need it.... I don't do Social Media...
Except Gmail - UA-cam... Not the app....
I don't add apps - I go to sites through Search...
I direct all my photos to SD Card that I can remove....
Apple won't allow SD or Head Phone Jack that I use at the Library ( I use library computers)....
I won't use Cloud... I want to be able to save my own stuff... I take screenshots of articles & when my phone begins to fill up..... I replace the device & remove my sim - hopefully keeping my information available to me..... I get new phones cheaper on ebay... I don't pretend it's really private... I just keep it boring & switch out the phone yearly...

If it was based on geo ip look up of course they are going to have a US IP address. Otherwise you risk your telemetry data getting flagged by corporate firewalls.

My history goes back to 386/486 computing days. At first most people living in the country were not able to connect except for using a dial-up service and then going to a bulletin board. Over time the system got better and went toward sky connections. The troubling thing for me .. now looking back .. is that it seems like they have used undercover FBI personnel to set up country communication systems .. educating the youth to play video games .. who then would encourage their parents to get a home computer and become tech savvy to some extent. Much of this has all been done using our own money .. through taxation as well as subscription services. Seems to me .. they are violating stalking laws.
Recently I entered a friendly contest .. building a bicycle powered machine. After creating a video for the contest .. I sent it through my gmail account to the person in the UK .. also with a gmail account .. so they could upload it for the contest. When they uploaded the video to their channel .. at the end of the video .. it posted two popup video links to my UA-cam account. I was "shocked" .. bc I had no intention for that to happen. In fact I didn't want ANY links at the end of the video .. so I played around with my account and got links to my videos to disappear .. but then there were links to the other contestants .. which would have drawn attention to the competition .. so I went back and made my videos visible again. This is maddening stuff. Highly frustrating .. someone of us out here in the "real world" needs to change this .. I think it could be done .. so where is the OPENSource Will??
I would like to encourage you to go to a channel called: "Bright Insight" on YT .. and hear what Jimmy has to say about how the search engines are deleting the internet. His last two videos cover this.
I would like to also suggest that you look up "panquake" and see what they are creating.

    The way I understand it;
The .5 seconds after typing "Goo.." into *whatever* branded device, you lose privacy. They are the super snoopers. Have to be careful with your email service and search use.
