Here's the new episode of The Lallantop's Matinee Show. This is Bharat Talkies segment which is dedicated to regional cinema. In this episode, we are discussing Legendary film director, writer, illustrator, and music composer Satyajeet Ray. Satyajeet Ray primarily worked in Bengali Cinema. Satyajeet Ray's first film Pather Panchali won 11 international prizes. His Apu Trilogy is widely famous among cinema lovers. Satyajeet Ray received 32 National Awards for his work. He is well respected across the world. Legendary directors such as Akira Kurasawa, Francis Ford Coppola, Wes Anderson, Richard Attenborough are fans of Satyajeet Ray's work. Academy honored him with Honorary Oscar award in 1992. Indian Government honored him with the Bharat Ratna award.

Hirok Rajar Deshe is one the most interesting movie IMHO. A child can enjoy the movie and an adult too - finding entirely different meaning of it (for adults, it is actually scary).
Something which always found in his father's poems of Abol Tabol - there two distinctly different meaning. One for children, one for adults.

For the past four years, I have been studying Bengali culture. My interest in this culture began when I discovered Satyajit Ray. The first time I saw one of his movies, I was around ten years old. Even though I didn't understand much at that age, the way he created a story and made it feel like a real-world experience stuck with me. I became a fan of cinematography and of Ray himself. He showed the world how cinema should be created and for what purpose. When I go on vacation to unfamiliar places, I try to use his method to explain a canvas. This closeness to Bengali culture has helped me understand Subhash Ji, Rabindarnath Ji, and many more. It's amazing how ideas function and how they inspire you to be your own person. Satyajit Ray was a gem that we will never forget, and no one can come close to his canvas painting art of looking at the world and getting involved in it. He not only lived a life to explain cinema but also lived one of the best atmospheres that a human being can experience from birth to death. Ray was way ahead of his time in terms of cinema. Thank you, Bengal.

I have watched lot of movies these days including Akira kurasawa's Roshomon and Seven samurai. But I regret that ignored Satyajeet Ray's movies. I am looking forward to watch The Apu Trilogy and explore more of his work. And I would like to Thank The Lallantop for presenting this awakening information about a Legend of Indian cinema.

Excellent presentation!...I am from an outskirt of Kolkata and have a luck to see Satyajit Ray face to face at a cultural event organized at Victoria Memorial. He was in a Dhakkapar Dhuti, a Punjabi and with a Shawl and looking ultimately gorgeous! What a personality! That was one of a few most memorable days of my life. I have a request, will you please do a similar program on Shri Girish Karnad...

Well said. The presenter herein falsely believes or rather very wrongly and very gravely wrongly believes that Bangla Cinema is regional cinema and Hindi Cinema is national cinema. Such definition of what is regional and what is national is based on the very assumption that Hindi is national language. Such assumption is wrong for Hindi is just one of many official languages of India, and is impossible that Hindi can be the national language of India, for India, is a great country with many languages, each language having its great culture and heritage.
she thinks as hindi is spoken by half the country thus that is national cinema . Though i admire hindi and films but Bangla as a language has more credentials than hindi or even Tamil at international level

E.T was inspired or plagiarized or copied from story written by The Great Satyajit Ray named "Bankubabur Bandhu" (Bankubabu's Friend).
When Ray contacted Hollywood's Columbia Pictures in 1962 with a script called "The Alien" based on this story, they agreed to produce the movie. But later, due to disagreement with Columbia Pictures, Ray returned to India, leaving the film unfinished. And with the help of this screenplay, Steven Spielberg later won the Oscar for his E.T. movie in 1982. Ray was very dissatisfied with the incident and called Spielberg a thief. At the time, Spielberg denied the allegations but later Spielberg finally felt guilty & finally specially his initiative helped Ray to get the Lifetime Achievement of Oscar Honorary Award in 1992. The one & only Indian director who got an Oscar Award.

I would say forget all his best known films but just watch three films: 1. Sonar kella - see the brilliance of story telling and background music 2. Aryoner din ratri - how a few persons rediscover themselves going to a tribal jungle environment and interacting with local people as well as other city dwellers who also came to visit 3. Watch a silent short film ‘Two’ - class struggles, free sprit vs caged rich, american expanism etc picturized on two little kids playing on thie respective boundaries yet interacting and even competing. A brilliant 12 mins silent short.
