I proudly present to you a may 1976 recording from my father. He filmed in super 8 (without voice) the filmproject A Bridge too far about battle in W011 in east Holland in the area of the John Frost bridge in Arnhem. Because the situation in Arhhem in 1976 was so different then the situation at the liberation period in 1944 -- 1945 was chosen for Deventer, a city 40 kilometer above Arnhem. In the movie that my father shot you see pictures from the scenes that waren taken in the area of the Wilheminabridge in Deventer
The scenes from the movie A Bridge to far around the 'Arnhem' bridge were actually shot in Deventer (from which you the making of can see in this super 8 movie) , where a similar bridge over the IJssel was still available. Although the original bridge in Arnhem still existed, it was by the mid-1970s sitting in a modern urban surroundings which could not be used to portray a 1940s city. Voor de filmdecors, de huizen die werden gebouwd, het kasteel wat werd gebruikt voor bepaalde opnames voor de film, werd door Nikkels Verf en Behang, die destijds aan Welle was gevestigd, alle verf en behang en wand bekleding geleverd. In deze tijd werkte ik voor dit bedrijf en was nauw betrokken bij de inkoop en levering van alle materialen. Sommige zeer speciale behangsoorten welke voor de aankleding van het kasteel/ landgoed werd gebruikt, ben de locatie vergeten, werden speciaal uit Frankrijk overgevlogen. Speciale tijd!

Dit soort film is uniek omdat er tijdens de opnames van A bridge too far vanwege auteurs rechten bijna geen film of foto's gemaakt mochten worden in die tijd.
Thanks for posting! Always interested in seeing behind-the-scenes footage of my favorite films. I just purchased the Blu-Ray version of the movie and was watching it yesterday. This is kind of stuff I'd like to see in bonus materials.
Ik heb nog als klein jochie op een van die gliders van de film gestaan. Dat was leuk.
If anyone is able to retrieve some tv-footage of the same subject: Dutch filmprogram Simonskoop I believe, did show the director instructing the German assault force just before they shot the scene. Attenborough was seen asking the German actor what the word for "go on" was. The actor replied "Weiter" and so we hear him say it a couple of times during the horrific onslaught.

tijdens de opnamens.
Maar dit is erg leuk om te zien.
k was in 1976 met mijn ouders op vakantie in Holten en kwam bij toeval over de brug. Mijn vader heeft ook nog enige super 8 filmpjes gemaakt maar dat was tijdens de opnames onder de brug in en rond de gebouwen.
Kunnen die niet ook online komen. Leuk voor de fans. Ik merk dat er veel reakties opkomen!

Great footage! The thing with 8mm films was: you never had enough film to capture it all: only a few minutes per reel I believe.
What is shown is of superb quality, for such a limited little camera. Nice, stable video for a handheld camera (no stabilizing device).

Late response but FYI, many of the houses around the bridge were constructed expressly for the film, including the house Hopkins and the British Airborne were holed up in.

Should have cut out all the modern stuff & showed the movie making content.
It was a pity that they had so few real armoured vehicles. Most of the German vehicles were built on car or truck chassies and look nothing like the real ones. Even at least half of the allied Sherman tanks were fibre glass hulls on Landrover cars.
Just for anyone reading above comment in the present time: I have always been a fervent World War II movie enthusiast.
I'm also rather critical.
None of the points above can be noticed in the movie. I never knew those Shermans weren't real. However, it's only logical. Having to fuel, chauffeur and maintain real vintage tanks would have doubled the movie's budget.
The one glaring thing that everyone, including the most loyal fans of this film admit:
The infamous tank scene, with the British paratrooper missing their PIAT shots, shows a Leopard I Dutch Army tank that was painted over and given a bit of cosmetics. It still looks like a Leopard I tank (first built in 1965).
And NONE of the extras portraying British paratroopers were actually British.
They were portrayed by Dutch active soldiers, of whom quite a few had to camouflage their long hair (allowed at the time) because nobody wanted to have their hair cut.
The biggest disappointment is that most of the Dutch actors are poorly directed and Liv Ullmann's dramatic speech in "Dutch" was unintelligble for any Dutch people.
@@AudieHolland Actually, the most disappointing thing was the ”German” armoured vehicles coming over the bridge. Most of them looked nothing like any real ones. But, I know it wasn’t easy to find German WW2 vehicles that could run.
@@YDDES I wrote a chapter on A Bridge Too Far for my book Battles on Screen. This included a list of every military vehicle used in the film and the reference for this was the article by Col John Waddy on the making of the film which filled almost the whole issue of After the Battle magazine. Some genuine German vehicles were used in the film but they also used a lot of replicas simply because they had to be used in explosive stunts and the producers obviously did not want to damage rare and priceless genuine German vehicles. In the footage above you can see a replica Sd.Kfz.251 halftrack which was made by mating the front end of a Commer van to the running gear of a Universal Carrier. This vehicle survived the filming and was used in other films such as Hanover Street.
