She is married to German pianist and composer Volker Hauschka (Bertelmann), with the two making an extremely good looking and super-talented couple. They have two daughters, Zelda and Nadia, one born in 2015, and the other in 2018. Much to my amazement, she was born in America, in Virginia, raised in Baltimore, Maryland. She and hubby Volker lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Indeed, much to my surprise, she is an American violin player, not German. Her ancestors were German. Most of her UA-cam recordings are showing her perform in Europe, Germany with predilection. Her label is Deutsche Gramophone. One of if not the best violinist of our times.

I discovered this video in the Christmas morning. A brilliant performance. I just loved her Bach performance. What a pleasant surprise & a gift during my covid19 quarantine. I hope this bring pleasure to others. Thank you Ms. Hahn.
How does she stay so relaxed while that violin does not move from its position at all. Her right hand bowing is sublime I rewatched only watching her tight hand, such skill. Bravo Hilary
She gets such a wonderfully shaped tone from that instrument. Her facility is impeccable. Intonation superb. And her playing is imbued with a sort of dramatic flare that brings out a sense of excitement from this gigue.
I just catalogued my Hilary Hahn CDs. It's cool hearing this gigue against her earliest Bach recordings. In this juxtaposition, Hilary shows us the evolution of her career in the malleability of Bach's music.

The '97 album gigue presents a slightly flatter trajectory (still awesome, btw), where here in this video the pianos and fortes are significantly more dramatic. The choices of attacks and approaches and finesses all indicate a deeper familiarity with Bach at this point in Hilary's life. She keeps opening herself to the music, which seems super important to do after decades of playing the piece thousands of times. (PRACTICE!) The vulnerability creates greater freedom of expression. Hilary performs her discoveries; she shares Bach with us in new and interesting ways--because she cares about audience energy, too. And with any truly valued longterm relationship, she keeps asking questions to the music--to Bach, nurturing the symbiosis so that we witness their continuous evolution. It's so dang cool. I didn't particular like or get Bach yet, and then the old man with the crew cut started sawing away at the Chaconne. I was mesmerized. (It being Heifetz, it clocked in under 13 minutes. But his approach really worked: the speed and severity made it ethereal.)

Truly a great balance of feeling, musicality, and phrasing within the limitations of this time period. Maybe slightly Romantic with vibrato. But who cares. Great playing and beautiful music is more important to the listener. Period instrument playing style belongs in the past. The violin has evolved as should we. BRAVO! I like the tempo fluctuations. The greatest gift one can receive is the gift of music. Hilary has a way with Bach.... the explanation as to why is only contained in the music, and cannot be expressed in words.
