This has come in very handy. I fed the first bit fo this in to some other kinds of noise to make a steel drain that looks as though its been turned on a lathe.

That was a pretty efficient way to simulate wood rings

If you haven't already seen it, this was the final one I did on wood grain in blender: ua-cam.com/video/Nv05CnyjU2I/v-deo.html . Not as popular though so maybe this one was better.

Quick question = how could you make the wood rings get together to the end (tree tip) ?

Ok, this is fantastic, and I watched it several times, BUT...
Can I take out the noise texture on the 'grains', and add another procedural texture, that has wood grain, and knots, and colors, etc?
I can't figure out how to use this 'shape' and add other textures/colors/adjustments to it.
I still love it BTW, I just want to take it to the next level 😎

What kind of lap top do you use? CPU RAM video cards? I figured you would need some huge desk top model computer with large video processing cards to run blender 3.0.

I have this somewhat older, cheaper alienware laptop which was on sale and the lowest cost way to get an RTX card at the time:) So cycles is relatively fast but CPU intensive stuff like geometry nodes is mixed at best. It's also mobile, but if you ever want to have kids don't put it on your lap while it's rendering.

Also you definitely don't need a beefy computer to try blender. I did all kinds of stuff with a 10 year old cheapo desktop before this laptop. Low poly models are perfect for learning to do rigging, rendering, procedural textures, etc. and eveee can do a lot in realtime. It's really high-poly renders (or lots of particles, etc.) with cycles that require a lot of horsepower. I'd try with what you have and see if you like it before investing.
