Happy Birthday to Tina Weymouth who was born on this date in 1950.
“Wild Wild Life” by The Talking Heads off of their “True Stories” album which came out in 1986 and featured Tina Weymouth on bass. Back in the day, a “girl” bass player used to be quite a rarity. When the topic of female bassists comes up, Tina is usually the first player that comes to my mind. Perhaps this is because she was one of the first ones that I was exposed to, second to Suzi Quatro/Leather Tuscadaro who I saw on “Happy Days” before I started playing bass. Oddly enough (according to Wikipedia), Tina’s husband, Chris Frantz, “encouraged Weymouth to learn to play bass by listening to Suzi Quatro albums.” Anyway, while I was never a huge fan of The Talking Heads, I never had an active dislike for them and have grown to appreciate their music more as the years have gone by. I always thought that Tina’s bass-lines were unique to her - often sparse, staccato, and mechanical yet, at the same time, melodic. And, to clarify, I don’t use the term “mechanical” in a derogatory way. I love mechanical playing. The band’s music was ahead of its time and Tina’s lines suited the songs perfectly. Another unique thing about Tina was that she was never attached herself to one type of bass for very long. She bounced seamlessly between short and long scale basses from an assortment of brands, including a variety of Fenders, Steinberger, Hofner, Gibson, Villette Citron… I'm sure there are a few more.
Check out the original video for the song, it’s a lot of fun and you might recognize a few familiar faces - • Talking Heads - Wild W...
I'm playing the Spector Legend through a SansAmp Para-Driver.
A Spector Legend played by a legend!
Are you looking to borrow money again?
@@TJH3113 no, I was just hoping to be voted "top comment"!
At this rate, one "Thumbs Up" isn't gonna do it.
@@FluffyWagglekins I pinned your comment, but only because you are in the Make-A-Wish program. How much longer do you actually have to live?

those descending notes in the chorus always tickled me!
I hear ya!
Tina’s such a great bass player. Underrated, I think. Super funky. Thanks for this cover, Troy.
I agree! I'm glad you liked it. Thanks, Mark.
As a whole they were into funk and polyrhythms . They desired to be “ Thinking Mans dance music”
That was note perfect and really fun to watch - I never miss your videos, and thank you for all the pleasure you bring!
So nice of you to say. Thanks!
I do love this song, makes me happy, takes me back
I’m glad you liked it, thanks for watching! Tina has a birthday coming up, doesn’t she? 😉
I love the talking heads. Tina Weymouth is such a great bassist. The song psycho killer, her bassline IS the song lol it doesn't get any better than that. Great great band
Very cool! Yes, I think she is too.
Great as always. One of my favorite performances of hers is the live version of "Life During Wartime" from Stop Making Sense. Got to get those steps in while you're playing...
Thanks Bennett! I'll get to work on that.
i think that tina's playing is very utilitarian and that makes sense to me. you have a group of musicians who got together to flesh out the bizarre ideas in david byrne's mind. it doesnt matter how expert they might be at their role, the message has to be shared, and they had to find a way. i think that is the most noble thing of all. i bought remain in light on vinyl years after it was released at my local store and i puzzled over it and loved it. as a weird kid i was empowered that some adults, somewhere, wore their badge of weirdness and didnt care. made me feel better when i might have felt worse for being different. this song is a bit 'pop' for what i loved about the heads but i still enjoy it. great cover! and im going to report you to youtube for the content match on the sting song! i heard that!
I'm glad you like them... and the video! Thanks. I thought your comment said a lot of great things that I did not touch on in my description, so I pinned it. Thanks for taking the time to leave it.
Beautiful song with beautiful bass guitar. Perfect match!
Thank you very much!
I haven't heard this song in a long time. Nice cover!
This song kind of reminds me of "mayor of simpleton" by xtc groove wise. I'd love to see you cover that tune. That and "last plane out" by toy matinee. The late 80's had so much great music floating around. So much, a good portion kind of overflowed into obscurity. Thank god for UA-cam. Lol. We can track those tunes down today, and appreciate what we grew up on! :)
I'm glad you liked it, Patty.
Tim, I can hear some similarities with "Mayor...". I've actually done two versions of that one. Not really familiar with the Toy Matinee stuff, though people do mention them from time to time.
@@TJH3113 Guy Pratt is a great bassist. He played on that album, then toured with Pink Floyd.
I have loved this song since I was a child. Tina's bass line here is just exquisite and you bring it to life!!
Awesome! I’m very glad you liked it Amber.
Love watching this guy. Inspiring me to get out the ol' bass again.
Thanks so much for watching and for taking the time to comment. Do it!!!
You can add me to that list, I will add this tune to my practice list!
NICE! I LOVE Talking Heads! Tina is an EXCELLENT player. You did a Superb job! as Usual. ;) Thank you SO MUCH for taking the time to learn, play , and record these songs!
It ALWAYS makes me SMILE.
Thank you kindly, as always it's my pleasure!!
What a fun bass line! Superb. Love the Talking Heads. It's been awhile since I heard this one. Made me smile.
It is! Thanks a lot, I'm glad you liked it.
That had me grinning ear to ear! I don't often notice so much glee in your face when you're playing. Thanks for this, wife & I just adore Talking Heads, especially Tina's bass playing.
I'm very glad you enjoyed it!
I also really enjoy Tina Weymouth's work with her sisters in the group Tom Tom Club and their epic dance hit, the often sampled "Genius of Love." Great vocal harmonies in that classic song to go with Tina's epic bass playing.
Another classic cover i will listen to over and over Troy, thank you for another outstanding performance!
I've actually been fighting COVID-19 for most of the month, but I think I'm over it now. I've watched many of your videos as I've been on the mend. You truly have my favorite UA-cam channel, thank you so much for sharing your talent!
I'm not sure if I've heard much for The Tom Tom Club. I'll have to look into them.
Thanks Michael, I am glad that you liked it.
Wow, I really hope you feel better and make a complete recovery. I'm pretty sure that I had it back in February/March, but by the time I got tested, the antibody test was not yet available. Stay safe and healthy and let's look forward to a fresh new start this January!
Since I’ve found this I’ve listened no fewer than 100 times. Fantastic!
Cool! I missed an opportunity to upload another Talking Heads cover I had on Tina's birthday which was on 11/22. Thanks John!
When I first heard the song, I was a junior in high school. It was much later in life when I realized that what made this song was Tina's bass, and as I listened to it more, I paid more attention to the bass.
Very cool! Thanks for sharing.
I love this song. Greetings from Brasil!
Me too! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
YES!! This songs been stuck in my head for like four weeks. I must have telepathically suggested that you cover it on the bass. You just made my day sir. Thank you for everything that you do
Hope you enjoyed it! I got your message loud and clear! Thanks and take care.
I had a massive crush on Tina back in the day.
I feel the need to go and watch some videos now...
I think a lot of people did, I just figured I'd leave her looks out of the description. I remember reading an interview with her many years ago where she was asked if she'd ever taken lessons. She said she took a few, but it was usually from a guy who just wanted to get into her pants... or something to that effect😂.
You looked like you were having fun with this one. Of course, you often look like you are enjoying the songs you play. Cheers! Thanks for sharing.
I was. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Love this! One of my fav TH songs. Thanks for great words for Tina too👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
Fantastic as always Troy. Thanks!
Thanks again!
Wow, just getting back into bass.... this is a really great bassline. Superb playing!!
Awesome!!! Thanks a lot!
Great, enjoyed learning and playing along with you! Very catchy bassline - I love Tina Weymouth's work
Thanks Josh!
They really were very unique and a lot of fun, and my appreciation for them has grown over the years as well. I really can't, off the top of my head, think of a song of theirs I don't like. Super nice cover with a great sound, and nice to see you having a little fun at 2:43!
I totally agree! Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to leave such a great comment.
Wild Wild Bass!Well DONE!
Thanks so much, Grant!
Love the sound of that bass! Great tune, can't wait to show this to the band!
Me too, it's one of my favorites. I hope they go for it!
Another great cover Troy. Great tone on that Legend. Thanks for the upload.
Thanks JR! This bass is one of my favorites. My pleasure, as always.
Talking Heads are so cool! Great work as always man, and Happy Birthday to Weymouth!
Glad you like them! Thanks a lot.

First time I saw John Goodman’s work was in True Stories. He dances to this. Official video from the band is clips from that cool, weird flick. Great cover!
Very cool! Thank you Brinson.
Very cool. Love that walk down!
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it.
Excellent, great job in the bass!
Thanks so much for the very kind words!
Wow that rift is insane! Thanks for sharing it!

Such a fun song to play and one can tell by watching you.
It is!
Awesome!
Thanks!
I play this music too, but never in my life so well done like yourself.
Thank you, Tina and Talking Heads.
Thanks to watching you in this warming sunday.
Você é O cara!
With a little time and repetition, I'm certain that you could!
Thanks, Peter and have a great day!
Chris and Tina were always so tight. Thanks for the great cover Troy
Yes, they really were. Thanks for watching, Mike!
Damn I love your videos. Such a great bass line in that song. Nice job Troy
Aw, thank so much, Scott. I appreciate it.
fun song, great playing 👍🏻
it is, thanks!
Thank you so much for the surprise reminder!!!! I hadn’t heard this in YEARS!!!! I was a freshman at UCLA when this album (true stories) came out and went down to the tower records in Westwood to pick up the vinyl... I will be 53 in December 2021...
You are so welcome!
Awesome ... I think I made a request for this a few years ago. Thanks for playing ... it's such a fun and interesting bass line.
Thanks... it's very possible. Sometimes it takes a long time for the seed to grow. Thanks and take care!
Great Job !!
Thank you!
Great playin' and sound, thumbs up.
Many thanks!
Love it Troy!
I’ve been on a real Tina kick lately. Had had her bass lines going through my head constantly.
Thanks Sid, I hope all is well!.
Yeah, Tina has some great ones.
Excellent Cover Troy.
Nailed it as always.
Hope you & yours are well.
Thank you kindly!
I hope that you and yours do the same.
Love it, Troy. one of the first songs I learned to play when I picked up the bass in ‘12. I’m in agreement with your stated admiration for Tina Weymouth. her stuff is fun to play. thanks for sharing it. “checking’ OUT!”
Thank you. Very cool! As I said in response to two earlier comments, a bass-line doesn't need to be complicated to be great and great fun to play. Haha... you saw that?
EXCELLENT COVER Troy!!! Also like You................I was never a great Talking Heads fan back then either!!! However..........over the years,as they became less and less frequent on people's playlists, and moved into a "classics" genre..........the more I found myself listening and loving their "progressive" style of music!!! When I saw David Byrne and the Talking Heads on SNL earlier this year,I actually missed NOT hearing them on the radio whenever I used to listen to it in my youth! Lol.
Anyway,GREAT choice of song and Loved watching you play this one! Great Job Sir!!! :-)
Thank you!
Nice coming home from bar and bam Talking Heads 🤘🤘🤘🤘Awesome cover And Thx !!!!
Rock on! Thanks.
Huge talking heads fan. Definitely hope you do (Nothing But) Flowers at some point, so consistent but just so in the pocket. Tina is just a master of groove. She made me realize how important groove was over for complex licks (because I was too into Geddy at the time lol). Anyway, Love the video as always!
Great to hear. I'll try and check that one out. Exactly, as I said to someone else in this thread, a bass-line doesn't have to be extremely difficult to be great and to be fun to play. Thanks!
Freakin Leather Tuscadaro!!!
Awesome reference Fonzy.
Thank you for the fun info, you are the best. Have a great week, I hope things are staying steady and you and Lynn are safe and healthy. Diana’s boss came down with the “zombie virus” so we’re all waiting for our test results...I’m sure we’re all good.
Going to give this song a try.
Cheers Fonzy
Happy birthday Tina Weymouth
Aye!!!
Lynn just got tested and got back negative results, which is good. She works at the airport and they've had a few cases show up there.
Great Cover Troy....no doubt Tina Loved The Tribute! Cheers From Ohio
Thanks so much! Do you think?
Wonderful interpretation of an absolutely wonderful bass player. I’ve lived the TH since I was 14, they and the music just made sense to the. I would love to see Uh Oh, when love comes to town be covered, it is a great song.
Thanks you and I share your appreciation for Tina's work. I'll check it out. Thanks for the suggestion.
@@TJH3113 You are most welcome. I was born ten years too late, The TH were no longer relevant to people my age by the late 80’s. Tina in indeed Badass.
great !
thanks!
I gave this a wild wild like. 👍
Thanks!
This is their best tune
Quite possibly.
@@TJH3113 David Byrne has a unique voice and great lyrics

Cool,.. staying in the pocket,. Love to hear you play,.. I like this band
Yes, a bass-line doesn't have to be extremely difficult to be great and to be fun to play. Thanks, Cindy.
@@TJH3113 and thank goodness for that 😆 your most welcome,.. 😊
Very nice
Thanks
Such a hooky baseline. Apart from it, and David's singing, I couldn't tell you what any of the other instruments are doing.
It is, isn't it?
You gotta check out “Found a job”. Great work by Tina! Wonderful work as usual, my man! Good tone.
I'll check it out! Thanks, Jackson.
Another superb performance! Love it! (Checkin' Out!)
Thanks again! haha
Spector makes some nice basses, I have had 6 or 7 of them. What I remember is that they were heavy.
I think they do as well.
Great playing as always.. it’s my favorite tune from these guys.. like you was never a huge fan..but I’ve also begun to enjoy them a bit more with age.. why is that??? I’ve noticed that with other bands and music..is this what happens when you get old???? Lol...well anyway thanks for this one.. as always have a great day...
Thanks Drew! I'm glad you liked it. I guess... I never cared for a lot of the music that came out in the 80's until fairly recently. I guess it wasn't as bad as I thought it was. It was my pleasure and I hope you have a great day as well.
Muito bom mesmo.👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you!
I love watching Tina performing in the "Stop Making Sense" film. She has to keep up with Byrne physically, while playing at the same time. It's really remarkable to watch.
As a woman bass player in the 70s she didn't get nearly the respect she was due. I remember hearing a story about the members of U2 (who were just starting out) using her as motivation for Adam Clayton to learn to play...something along the lines of "Come on Adam, if a girl like Tina Weymouth can do it, you can." Ah well, her body of work speaks for itself! :)
I've never seen that movie, I used to have the cassette tape though.
Sounds like my life. :-) Troy you look so good and happy. You are like my sister, Penny. The older she gets the younger she looks. That's what happens to people with good hearts. I'll bet the same is true for Lynn. Please sow us a picture of sweet Lynn. Hope Mom is doing better. Thanks for that video. I really liked it. Take care! Marvine :;_)
Haha... mine too! Actually, this video is a few years old, which might explain my youthful appearance.
Jajajja the face in the finish...jajajaj..thank bro
Haha... Free, free, set them free
Nicely done sir. Fat tone too!
Thank you!
This song has a great bass line
It does, doesn’t it?
Thumbs up Troy. Cindy Lauper's 'All Through The Night' would be an awesome bassline to do. Just planting ideas in your head friend, lol.
Thanks, Gizmo. I'll check it out.
I love this song! Have you ever seen the video? Famous musician impersonations, and John Goodman is in it too. I know who most of the people are supposed to be... you see Prince, Meatloaf, Billy Idol, Gary Numan ... but some of them still elude me.
Me too! Yes, I put the link to the video in the link. Steve Buscemi is in the crowd as well, if you look closely. I read that he and John Goodman were both in the movie that came out in conjunction with the album. I wonder if they ever worked together between "True Stories" and "The Big Lebowski"? I think one of the characters was supposed to be the Karate Kid.
I always wanted to play psycho killer with the Way Out’s. 😆
I did not know that. Would have gone over good, I think.
👋👋👋👋👋👋 sensacional ☺️🎵🎶🎵🎶🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷😷
Thank you, Ariel!
Great to see a cover vid with no dislikes. Knock on wood.
Thanks a lot! My biggest fan is slacking off.
Looking after my bass i see, And another song to learn. There goes this week.
I'm taking very good care of it for you. Enjoy!
@@TJH3113 Realy enjoyed learning that , fun boppy licks, and not hard to learn on a rainy Sunday with a glass (or 2 ) of red.
Great stuff! Love Tina in both groups. Timely posting, I just watched the excellent new David Byrne concert video a few days ago.
The musicians were fantastic, but i still missed the rest of the Heads not being there.
Oh, and is that JC bass in the background new?
Great to hear, Deesh. I wonder if he'll bring the show back to Broadway if it ever reopens? No, I've had the JC for a while, just don't play it very often. I did this video a while back as well.
nice mask collection homie
Thanks. Most of them are from DeathStudios.
2:43 contagious happiness
Haha...
Another fantastic cover, Troy! Slightly off topic, but will we see that Jack Casady signature in a future video?
Thank you. I haven't playing it in a while, but I've done a few covers with it. "Kat Food" by The Dixie Dregs is one of them.
@@TJH3113 I bought the Alpine white version a couple years ago and have been so pleased with the tone. Its voice is so unlike anything else I own.
Would you say the Spectors are your favorite basses? I may be wrong, but I often see you playing them in your videos more than the others. The Spectors have this very thuddy, round sound to them, I quite love it. I was thinking about getting one.
I'd say it's between them and the Guilds.
Very nice cover man. I don't know if you Are into psychedelic rock music. But live and let live by Love has a very juicy bassline, it would be nice if you made a cover
Thank you very much. I checked it out... not bad, but not something I'd really be interested in covering. Thanks for the suggestion though.
@@TJH3113 thanks a lot for replying, you're the best bassist On UA-cam, you listen to your viewers, plays bass fluently and likes RUSH, the last fact that I mentioned it's the most important
@@Yeast191 No problem. I always try to respond to every comment. I get a lot of "suggestions" and sometimes they just hit me at the right moment. Understand, that even what might seem like a simple song, often takes me many hours to learn and, more importantly, get to the point where I can play it straight through without making any glaring errors. So, I really have to want to do a song to do it. Please don't let that stop you from making any suggestions in the future.
Tina is 70 now?! Wow.
Yeah, that's something, isn't it?
Neils first drum set he used with Rush is going to be auctioned off.
I heard that. Has it sold yet?
Ha ha! I can’t wait to try this now! Ok, you’ve helped me pull my head out of my comfortable butt zone...thanks by the way.
Awesome! Go get it!
Yes - mechanical in a good way. When I want to work on my timing I play This Must Be The Place.
Yes... definitely in a good way.
Hello! Did you learn this by ear, or do you have the transcription. I'm very new at bass and would love to learn this, but can't find a decent transcription. I recently found your channel, and love it!
Hello! Yes, I play by ear and memory so, I'm sorry, but I do not have any transcription of the song. If I did, you would be most welcome to it. Welcome.
@@TJH3113 I appreciate that. Thank you so much for responding.
Nice cover. I like the TH, but in small doses. Same as it ever was.... :-)
Thanks. Fair enough!

Thanks Bess!
If i'd suggest one i'd say Barbra Streisand - The Way We Were. :D
I'll check it out. Thanks for the suggestion.
So from the camera angle, it looks like your E string is on the high side. The rest look like I couldn’t slide a slice of corned beef from a Ruben sandwich underneath at the 14th fret. Aka Entwistle close.
Sounds great though
I try not to get too hung up on measurements or looks. I just set the basses up to where they sound and play the way I want them to. When I sometimes do a visual check of the string height, I'm often surprised at how high it is. It always seems as if I could go lower. Thanks.
I noticed that you have changed you right arm playing style since you first started loading videos. I'm curious about why you did this, care to share?
Actually, I don't think it has changed much at all. I just looked at the first video I posted, which was "Digital Man" and I still have that awkward, elbow up in the air posture. I believe I do this to emulate the position my arm might be in if I were standing up and it keeps my wrist from bending at a severe angle. The position seems to change slightly depending on the bass I'm playing. A bass with a larger bass-side body allows me to rest my arm on it more than a smaller bodied bass.
Check it out :) :)
😂
