In the next part, i'l incude a section about your opinions on her tone, so be sure to like and sbscribe if you liked this video and want to see a part 3!
One thing I noticed just now, is how beautiful and cute, her facial expressions looked on 98/99, plus the way that she connected with the audience is so honest a beautiful (it still is of course), but 98/99 had such an elegance, beauty and stage presence that only honest true stars can have.
Maybe her larynx position changes a lot throughout her voice, which causes her voice to be dark/mature (lower larynx) and then suddenly light/bright/child like quality (higher larynx) I think? I know there are many other factors too. I personally prefer her tone the most in Charmbracelet. And it’s astonishing how she sounds different every era, she gives a a whole new flavour and colour in her voice, which sounds so fresh, that’s one of the things that makes me the most addicted to her voice. 🥰
definitely could be it, but in females it's hard to judge the position of the larynx because there is no Adam's apple. In men, the larynx position is easy to tell by looking at the position of the Adam's apple. Nasal placement also changes tone tho, could be that together with the larynx. Might even be overconfidence with daydream. It visually looks like she is too lazy with the notes because of confidence, and she doesn't engage the diaphragm enough (causing breath support issues, as we can understand from her frequent and unnecessary breathing), the tone lightens and the notes fall a little flat sometimes.
@@zortingenşıtraze yeah exactly it’s very hard to tell. And just like I said, a lot of other factors play a big role too. Like you said, nasality and breath control affect that too…also how she uses her soft palate to produce the sound, how much chest and head she is mixing, vowel placement, jaw movement, tongue position, where exactly the sound is resonating in her mouth, fatigue, stress, alcohol/smoking, warming up correctly or incorrectly…stuff like that can affect how your delivery sounds so only she knows what exactly she’s doing, we can only guess. But still, she continues to sound amazing with her musicality and improvising skills.
It's all in the nodules she had her whole life and she's only Husky in her lower range/speaking voice while the rest of her middle and top parts of her voice resemble a High soprano.
1997 is just a tired daydream, you can see her daydream voice was literally showing when she sang my all in SNL. She ate the E5s with no rasp. If Mariah had taken measures here she'll still be on the same calibre with music box and dd.
Also in 1997 she sang Butterfly TWICE with no rasp (she did all the difficult parts from the studio version back to back and beyond in such a beautiful way) + In 1998 that rasp made her even more special and mature in the VH1 Diva performances and don't get me started about one of her best live performances ever which is the tribute to Patti LaBelle!! Also in 1998/1999 she used her raspiness to really empower her 'I Still Believe' performances that were flawless. and of of course the 1998/1999 'When You Believe' performances in Oprah and the Oscars, she was a beast those days. So yeah I can't see anything really wrong in 1997 except for one "not perfect" performance It's true that in a lot of days from 1998-2000 her voice was indeed changed and lost some of its abilities (especially in 1999-2000) but not in a "she lost her voice" way! because she had a daydream performances in this era after a good rest. Also on the other hand she used her raspiness and new voice to master new songs beautifully and did beautiful renditions of old songs. to sum I really don't consider the 1998/2000 era a bad one by any means.
daydream era is overrated, her voice was so light and nasal she lacks depth and core in the sound, even music box is far better than daydream lol in terms of vocals.
I love Mariah, but definitely 1997-2000 ( butterfly, #1's and rainbow era) her tone definitely got darker. Voice raspier, hoarse and timid. During these years she toured alot, and probably didn't take care of her voice the way she should've. On top of the stress from her label lawd. But I love the fact that she used her low notes alot more. I guess since she started to lean musically towards R&B and Hip-Hop she didn't have to have the lighter, girly, polished, pop-sound that soooo many people wanted her to maintain. Even Mariah mentioned in interviews years later that she experimented with her voice ( high chest mixed belts) although her voice sits a little lower because of the nodules. But excellent vid tho 👌.
97-2000 was just a result of singing while not only being tired/stressed but going through a vocal maturity. Mariah was 28-30 around these eras so her voice was changing and maturing. If she would have rested and just let it do its thing, Glitter and Charmbracelet live era would have definitely been prime like vocals.
Yes a large part of this vocal change was due to maturing I think. There was probably damage and her nodules involved in it as well, but I think a largely unrecognized part of it was vocal maturity. She was approaching 30 so ofc she wasn’t going to sound as light and bright. Her voice was biologically changing and becoming more womanly
I am still surprised with what I read before that Butterfly was solely recorded in 97 and not during Daydream era. Meaning she still has all Daydream “prowess” in 97 but maybe the stress kicked in. 😭
yep, divorce, her label, I think her siblings too. It was a lot for her. And ofc the pressure of being one of the greatest vocalist on top of everything. think she got caught off guard when her voice started being uncooperative.
I actually and truly believe the recording of Butterfly started in late 1996. She said in her book that after she met with Derek Jeter in November of 1996, she recorded The Roof. If I’m not mistaken, she recorded it like the day after it happened. Which then would mean she started recording Butterfly in November 1996, and that’s pretty consistent with her recording schedule of the two previous albums; Merry Christmas and Daydream. With those two previous albums she began recording them in the fall or early winter months of the previous year of their release date. Not only that but she was still in top form and a daydream-like voice when she recorded Butterfly. I really think the changes began later in 1997 and truly emerged and become much more apparent in the spring of 1998. She still had some daydream-like vocals on certain dates of the Butterfly World Tour.
@@carlover16074 the whole prediction about when she started recording the album is still controversial lol. I truly believe she started recording the album in early 1997, because that Honey performance at TOTP sounded exactly like how she sounded in the album. Not to mention she wrote and recorded My All after shooting the music video for Honey, which was in mid 1997.
@@whitepaper5241 It is controversial. But why is it hard for some people to accept that she probably started recording the album during Daydream era? Do they think it discredits Daydream era? She was still in prime voice when she recorded Butterfly IMO. She said herself she started recording The Roof right after her encounter with DJ in November 1996. Also if you listen to Honey (Smooth Mix) you can really hear her Daydream voice, specially at the beginning of the song.
@@carlover16074 especially since she stated herself in late 96 on Rosie o donnell that she was already working on a new Album. This would align with what you said about her starting to record butterfly in late 96. And you can very clearly tell in the album butterfly that she recorded it in two different of each year, as some of her vocals on butterfly daydream vocals are very present and then the rest is when you can hear that early-to-mid 97 voice where she started to sound raspy belting higher. People say she had her daydream tone in her 97 performances, but i hear an obvious difference in tone and consistency in her belts in comparison.
96-00 She was the most demanded female musician globally. Mariah was doing a lot of work! Barely any proper rest and purposely over working herself, not to mention her level of songs are not for average singers!
Seeing it broken down and analyzed like this, you can really tell how drastic her tone changed. It sounds like overall her voice dropped about a semi tone in this period and her tone sounds drier, her vocal chords were changing structurally. Tbh I do prefer the more pristine voice of her prime but I do appreciate her working through the issues and evolving with her changing sound
This made me cry. Miss Whitney Houston's songs were the first ones I was singing when I was a little boy then Queen Mariah Carey came whom then became My Greatest Idol in Singing And SongWriting. 🙏😇
Out of all three 1990s Diva, Mariah definitely the one has the biggest change on her voice. Reasons could be mostly come from singing to many high and hard songs with some effects from vocal nodules. I hope she could protect her voice more careful. Gladly nowadays she didn't overworked her voice anymore. P/s: I'm really love Mariah's 1993-1996 tone. In these years, she is such a monster vocalist.
Idk why but I just felt like her throat was dry with all that rasp and lack of connectedness in her phrasing. Prolly lack of rest + drinking bubblies + arid conditions with fan blowing at face + heavy utilisation of airy whispers
Ok we all know that the older a person gets the more their voices change but we can all agree that she still sounds fabulous so get over yourselves Asha sit back and enjoy the beauty!
