The Getaway games on the PS2 had a great healing mechanic where you had to lean on the wall to slowly heal. You couldn’t do this indefinitely though. Eventually your wounds would stop being able to heal. It was great at forcing you to take your time and not take to many risks.
@@Joreel It's not a simple licensing issue: WB made the Nemesis System a patent. They OWN it, in the same way Nintendo used to own the Sanity meter for Eternal Darkness until it expired roughly two years ago in November 2021. No other games can use the Nemesis System until the patent expires.
@Joreel Not even that. All they have to do is come up with something similar but legally distinct. Nintendo allegedly holds a patent on EDs sanity system but several other games with sanity systems have come and gone since eternal darkness.

*Max Payne 3* had a neat mechanic that I wish more games would borrow, where you could save yourself from dying if you managed to kill the last guy who shot you before Max hits the ground. And you can't abuse the system, because the window for that revenge shot gets shorter and shorter the more times you need it. The Borderlands series has something similar, but in those games you just have to kill any enemy, and not necessarily the one that killed you.
What kills me about WB patenting the nemesis system is that they have no plans of using it in any future games (as far as we know) and it would work sooooo well in a crime/mafia based game. The replayability would be endless.
I'm not sure what this is called, but I thought there were a few games that could recognize that you had played the prequel to said game and unlocked previous games items.
The vine game reminds me of Growing Home. A game that definitely deserves a spot in a commenter's edition is The Unfinished Swan. Using a paintball gun to create the environment is something I've never seen before or since. If there is another game out there with a similar mechanic, I'd love to know about it.
Midnight suns was way better than I expected it to be. Avengers ruined everyone's expectations of Marvel games I think. With the exception of spiderman.
Makes me wonder how many companies have patents on mechanics that’s literally blocking creativity. Two games I thought of are: Fez with the 2D gameplay in a 3D world. And Blinx with the time controlling mechanics.
Can we get a moratorium on the nemesis system? It’s been talked to death in so many videos… And as it’s parked till 2032… It will never change status. Here’s a more interesting fact to fill it’s spot: first game to use the Microphone as a weapon - The Legend of Zelda Japan Famicom edition only.
Eternal Darkness and it's sanity meter is definitely one that should return. It was crazy when it was created, can you imagine how much more can be done now with current gen systems.
is Malenia hard? I only died to her once. On my first attempt she survived my spell because of life-stealing from my summon. On my second attempt I didn't use a summon and killed her in four spells. edit: People who fight Malenia in melee are the same people who fish a chunk of carrot out of the blades of a food processor with their fingers. Or drop a dime into a sink, then try to reach their fingers past the garbage shredder to get it. Or kick the hard lump of grass that bungs up your lawnmower blades with their foot while it's still running.
Most of these are just niche mechanics. Not really overlooked. Some the game has to built around it. Some are actually still used today in select games. For the sound, games like EFT, Hunt Showdown, Dead by Daylight and even recently Dont Scream all rely on sound. Dont Scream even requires the use of a mic to play.
since marvel is outsourcing for their games, what would happen if the devs behind the recent doom games work on a punisher game? or is there different dev better?
I was pretty hype for Marvel's Midnight Sun. Then, they show the deckbuild mechanic, and, my hype was all gone. I was hoping it was going to be more like xcom gameplay
X-COM like combat makes sense for characters that function similarly (eg. Them having guns) But superheroes can be unique, so I personally really like it Like I love rogue-likes, so i like combat systems that implement rng such as deckbuilding games
Same here. I ended up getting it on sale, played a few missions, but the deck building portion just felt like I was being pigeonholed into playing the game the way the game wanted me to. Never been a fan of deck building games, and wish it would be updated to make that feature optional.
@@mestre12 haha, my disdain started early when Magic the Gathering was just getting popular. As a kid, who had to buy most of their games and toys with their allowance, I saw it as a money pit. Carried that into adulthood. Even had friends try to get me into them later in life and never caught on.
I played Marvel's Midnight Suns recently. Putting aside the fact that when you move the system will glitch now and then, sending you back a few steps, facing a new direction, which while annoying could be overlooked, the main drawback of the game is it is a tactical game, not an action game. You get mediocre cards with mediocre attacks, and if you can't take out all the enemies after one turn, more are brought in. If the game had been action oriented, it might have been fun. But, as it was, after I finished the tutorial section, and made the main character, I just couldn't go on with the game, it was so utterly boring. Right before the first real mission I uninstalled it, and put it aside as a lesson learned.
People like tactics games, that's not a drawback in general. A drawback to you personally maybe, but people like to use strategy and try to plan what to do, to kill everyone and stop the enemies from coming in. It's a puzzle to be solved. And over the course of the game, all the characters get more cards, and more powerful cards, and you have to decide what cards you want in your deck and which you don't, and you unlock even more heroes. Then there is the whole X-com base building aspect, and the Persona/Fire Emblem friendship upgrade system as well. A lot of different parts put together very well. We already have had plenty of Marvel action games, it was great to get a decently budgeted Tactics game, and one based on a great 90s comic arc.
The One Sitting thing was done really well by The Mansion of Hidden Souls on the Sega Saturn where you have a time limit to get through it, around 2 hours if memory serves. Another mechanic you've missed is 'running out of air' in the Saturn's game Deep Fear.
What about Bulletstorm's Skillshot Mechanic? You can kill enemies in anyway you want and you can get points for it and it was called Skillshots. For example you can shoot a guy in the crotch then kick a guy head off. Then you get 500 points for it and it be called Mercy.
Immediately thought of Sunset Overdrive, which directly ties your weapon damage and performance to the Tony Hawk style combos you're bouncing around the city with
I think another unique system I found personally was the player input combat in the PS1 Legend of Legaia game, honestly no other game has ever had that kind of combat ever since.
The game Prey (2006) never get's mentioned on this kind of lists, wich is a shame. The orginial gives the player the unique mechanic of detaching the spirit from the body of the main character, allowing the spirit to roam freely for a short time. You can use it to solve puzzles, locate paths that are not visible to mortal eyes, kill regural enemies and enmies that can only be killed in that form. It also has a mechanich that activates every tim you die: you have the chance to decide quickly if you want healt or regenerate spirit powers.
Calling all sudden cut aways to a sponsored segment that totally ruins the flow of the video and makes me hate the sponsored product and want nothing to do with it ever!
Sorry I had to leave this comment. I know you obtain sponsor etc but that game is a sell out. Another puzzle game based on something good so lots of people buy a name. The walking dead is zombie apocalypse. Not that game sorry
The Nemesis system isn't overlooked, but it is extremely overrated. It looks good on paper, it can be interesting for awhile if you're new to it, but a few hours in and you'll realize that no, in fact, nothing it does is unique. It produces "enemies" from within a limited selection of factors, and you'll end up hearing/seeing almost identical "unique" enemies throughout the game. Dialog and naming conventions are repeated often. Unless you die extremely frequently the whole thing goes nowhere and does nothing.
Great list, except for the last entry. It is always good to know about new gameplay but torture simulator for number one?! wtf is going on with Whatculture? BS.
@WhatCultureGaming did any of you play Jet Li's ps2 game "Rise to honor"? Using the directional sticks to fight multiple enemies at once was sooo satisfying! Always wondered why no one ever used that method to build on.
Midnight Suns simply wasn't fun, imo. Too much RNG and grind. And the Nemesis System isn't really overlooked... it's patented or trademarked or whatever. A lot of other companies may use it if they could. Everyone I've talked about it with and several UA-cam channels said they wanted it to be the next Horde Mode like Gears Of War or Halo's Firefight or whatever... but nobody can use it but WB.
you know..."Playable only in ONE sitting," ISN'T a new mechanic. Old games on the NES, Genesis, SNES....heck...BEFORE the Playstation era...most games didn't save progress, a.k.a....can only play through it in one sitting. The reason it's rare now, is people would flip their lids at games they couldn't save...or save-scum.
No savegames seems really bad to me. Since the possibility exists, if the game is just good, i dont see why they would not implement old save where you damn want to, so you dont waste precious time, but enjoy the well thought out game.
