7:17 Fun fact, it was the British who intercepted the telegram and were in a quandary on how to release it. You see the British had severed Germanys international cables at the start if the war so Germany was using the American telegraph cables to send the message. Unbeknownst to both parties the UK had tapped the cables and when the telegram was sent and intercepted, didn't know quite how to show it to the world. If they did it would be not only admitting that they had broken the code which would cause the Germans to change it but would also be admitting that they had been tapping America's cables and listening in on them the entire time. France's plan was actually very smart, and their plan was supposed to use the part of Belgium west of the Meuse River (or possibly the Rhine, I forget which) as an extension of the Maginot Line as one complete fortification all the way to the sea. It was the Belgian king who eventually distrusted the French and abandoned their part of the plan and so France had to invade Belgium when Germany was imminently going to do the same to Belgium to begin working on the fortified line. This the latest of the "ten minute" history series I've watched. I've loved them all so far, as they give a quick fire pot history of the subject being covered. Injecting some light hearted humour here and there, both visual and spoken.
This was glorious, it was short and nice with bare minimum info. I recommend everyone watch or read more in depth history but as a bare minimum, this is great.
So lucky, uploaded 7h ago, I literally have a history exam tomorrow and completely forgot about it and I needed a quick reminder of what happened, this video is perfect, thank you so much!
I have been binge watching your videos since yesterday and I gotta say I love your use of maps. Somehow I've always been drawn to maps. I love looking at them. And they offer easy visual representation in matters of war, empires, and stuff.
It also advanced medical, industrial and other technological aspects touched by the war by years to decades ahead of their time, people often forget this major instance, before and during much of the war, when somebody suffered a wound from gunshot for example or an explosion, they just stitched them back together, leaving stuff inside, WW1 was the point where doctors started to actively search for better solutions as enough case studies could be used to prove that was a bad idea (aka infection killed people) as just a single example of revolutionary science out the war that would go on to save millions.
It really is sad to see how many people died for nothing, let's hope the history never repeats again. Thanks for making this video, it is a helpful reminder of the history events.
In case you wanted to know, the entire world is a massive cluster of many conflicts for not very much Hoping that history won't repeat itself is hopeless: people never change, their modus operandi do
Great vid, as always. One small point I would raise however is that Wilhelm II didn't just abdicate because he thought the war was lost. He did so because there was a revolution (the November Revolution, to be precise) in Germany that overthrew the Monarchy, took Germany out of the war and established the Weimar republic
For those interested in knowing more, I heartily recommend Dan Carlin's Hardcore History podcadt with its episodes "Blueprint for Armaggedon", probably the best overview of the western front in WW1 ever.
Just great overview of the war. Yes we understand this is a large and complex story. It could be 100 minutes and there’s still more details. I love your humor and sarcasm in all your videos. Well done. Keep them coming.
High School Teacher: What was the cause of WW1? Student: The assassination of Arch Duke Ferdinand? Teacher: Correct! Me: That's it?? Teacher: Yes Johnny... That's it.
Wasn’t it Mackensen who once said something like: „A unfair peace will only end up in another war.“ From some points: what happened after ww1 was kinda predictable... thanks Versailles
For most of WW1, it just feels like a Great European War more than anything, with Japan doing its own thing (being an empire and all) and conquering vulnerable territories - it feels WW2 seems more worldwide, with the Pacific Theatre and USA being a lot more involved.
This is partially true. The main reason WW1 is considered to be a world war is because of European colonial empires which also participated in the fighting. Places like Canada, Australia, Indochina and many colonies in Africa either sent men to fight, or even had fighting on their own ground. But ultimately it was all because of the European powers (I guess that's also kind of the case for WW2).

LOL I do that in my history classes at school and nobody even knows where that comes from. (They probably care so little that they don't even know what I'm saying.)
*IT WOULD BE A GREAT WAR, A WAR SO GREAT IT WOULD BE THE WAR TO END ALL WARS*

European history in a nutshell:
"A lot of people died for a whole load of nothing."
The war didn't end 1918 or 1945, it is still ongoing. UN Charter, Articles 53, 77 and107. It is not about land, it is about race. Germany must perish.

I love that the animator took the time to make the rifles look correct for the respective armies instead of just drawing a generic rifle. Nice little touch.

A very good thumbnail of how the war came about and concluded. I am enjoying catching up on your videos.
5:23 LMFAO it's Indy Neidell
Welcome to the great war
I saw that too
This the latest of the "ten minute" history series I've watched. I've loved them all so far, as they give a quick fire pot history of the subject being covered. Injecting some light hearted humour here and there, both visual and spoken.
You should do more 10 minute videos again, it was a great format

Wasn't the medical advancements also thanks to the Spanish Flu, which was going on in the latter half of the war?

It's definitely better than John Green, & it was amazing considering the time limit.
Anything is better than John Green.

Brilliant. WW I has always been a complex war for me to wrap my head due to all the combatants so I thank you for this video.
It really is sad to see how many people died for nothing, let's hope the history never repeats again. Thanks for making this video, it is a helpful reminder of the history events.
In case you wanted to know, the entire world is a massive cluster of many conflicts for not very much
Hoping that history won't repeat itself is hopeless: people never change, their modus operandi do
Great vid, as always.

It also helped to shape the current situation in the middle east
I’m glad you mentioned the Easter Rising. I haven’t seen a lot of stuff on WWI mention Ireland’s attempt at independence.
