I’m also on a gap year (a last minute decision) because I needed to take some time out for my mental health and I desperately needed to build my social skills. You’re not alone. There’s this expectation that college is our only chance at becoming the perfectly confident future self we imagine. But you’re so right - we get to make that decision right now. Working as a barista for a bit this year has already made my confidence improve massively. It helped me today to hear you had been struggling with the same things I had. Especially to do with the pandemic - I also feel like I lost being 16/17 and all the stereotypical teenage experiences you’re meant to have. Aa a student at one of the more “prestigious” UCs, sometimes I wish I would’ve applied as a CC transfer. There are so many pros in doing so. You get your general breadths done at a smaller school and they’re much easier in comparison to university level ones. You get to pay less, have a much more mature mindset, and you can jump into the classes that actually correlate to your major. Don’t give up!
Actually, here is a legit life hack for you (or anyone else reading this), you wanna get into those elite schools (USC, UCLA, Berkeley, or another other UC)? Community College is the way to go. Usually Community Colleges have direct pipelines to big universities so you do your two years at the Community College not only will you save money (It is pretty much free) but you will get to go to your college of your dreams as long as you let your counselor know which one you want to go to. Also another benefit to Community Colleges is that you get the 'useless' subjects out of the way (English, Math, Science, etc.) and when you get to University, you instantly get to start learning what you wanted to do instead of wasting time on those core subjects. Do not fall for the four year university trap, they are there to harvest as much money as they can from naïve prospective students. By enrolling in Community College, you will have a guaranteed path and less debt!

You're doing great. My son went through the same time line and came out confused w life just as well. We told him to just do what he loves for a while. So now he saves neglected plants and gives tarantulas a home. He takes great care of helpless lives so well that often we remind him to take care of himself. He knows we will support all of his endeavors and just want to see him happy. I'd say by the looks of the comments, your community wants that for you too Andrew. 💚💚✌🏼✌🏼

Aw it’s okay Andrew, I’m happy you have a supportive team around you during this time! I would recommend just looking for general work alongside doing UA-cam? Just keep looking until you find something, once you start getting interviews etc you’ll start feeling some purpose and then even if it’s not the job for you, just get yourself some money until you find something that you really want to go after. Have you wanted to stream? Reaction videos? Mukbangs? Podcast? There’s so many different paths to go, you will surely find something! I believe in youuuuuuuuuu! I got rejected from all the colleges I applied back in 2021, I decided to do community college then a gap year. I just want you to understand that 1) if you think college is not for you, then please don't do it. Don't feel forced to, you're amazing just the way you are, your youtube videos really accompanied me through my depression and it made my days so much lighter and happier. YOU'RE AMAZING. 2) just because they rejected you doesn't mean sh*t, it doesn't mean you're not worthy, it's honestly their lost. 3) keep going, kepp trying, if you want to try college, then do a little bit more research on what other colleges you might like, and apply! School is not for everyone. I went back to technical college when I was 32?! You can start at a tech college and move to a 4 year if you want. College doesn’t always teach you what’s out in the real world. They give you the basics and a foundation to start. But lots of people don’t use their degrees. Your got This!

Hey Andrew! Ever since high school to college, whenever I apply to a school or a course, I always get rejected or just on the waiting list. In college, I applied fpr medical technology but I got in in nursing instead. I ended up loving it and I knew I loved it more than my first choice. I then passed the boards and now a registered nurse. In med school, I also got rejected even though my credentials were excellent. I applied for a reconsideration and I was immediately accepted. I am now a 3rd year medical student and hopefully a clinical clerk by the summer. Everything works out in the end! Let me tell you one of my favorite quotes, “If the plan doesn’t work, change the plan but never the goal.” You’re not alone. We’ve all been there. :)

You could always do online courses on Udemy or wherever! I feel like that might be a good use of your time. If you don't need college for what you're interested in or may want to pursue, focusing on improving specific skills instead of sitting in core classes you'll never use would be beneficial!

You have so many opportunities to take on an apprenticeship or volunteer in places and work your way up from there honestly Andrew you have a lot going for yourself. UA-cam is always a thing!
Andrew you’re overthinking it, you’re really young - it’s okay to feel lost and not know what to do with life, there’s people in their 40s/50s that are still figuring it out. If you don’t want to go to college and UA-cam is something you want to do as a career then I say put a 1 year plan and go extra hard - study, keep coming up with new ideas, work on your material and editing every day, make it so every video is a 10/10 and watch them views roll in. What I do advise is, since time is on your side, you should 100% open up an IRA account with Vanguard or a similar investment company and invest monthly in a total market index fund and don’t touch it for 30+ years and watch the magic of compounding do it’s work…something I wish someone told me when I was your age.
I’m excited for the next chapter :) you don’t need to follow societal expectations of how one should pace out their life, i think education and training is important but college isn’t the end of it.. pray that you will find your way

I used to think college was a necessary step for me after high school. I transitioned from dual enrollment in late high school to doing college full-time once I graduated high school. I was extremely discouraged when I had some severe health issues that forced me to stop school when I was over halfway through with my undergrad degree. But this forced me to broaden my narrow view of what I thought was the “only” way to a successful, fulfilling life. Now I realize college is helpful inasmuch as it serves you. For some people, it really doesn’t serve much of a purpose. Sorry for the rambling! Hope that helps a little bit! Loved seeing how supportive your family is! 💓

Andrew this is just a stepping stone for better things to come. And honestly speaking from experience, college can be a good thing if you’re serious about knowing what you want. It’s not all that it’s cracked up to be and I personally felt like I wasted my time not knowing exactly what I wanted. There was definitely some good too. But honestly I would say this time is just going to be space and freedom in some sense for you to work on the things and the passions you want as well as operation shfhm 🤣🤣
It may feel like you have limited options, but there are actually so many options and they just don't seem obvious. I suggest you do SOMETHING. Then learn from it - what do you like about it, what do you not like about it, etc. - if it's not the perfect thing for you, move on to something else and learn from it as well. It could be a job or jobs, college classes, trade school, etc. You don't have to know exactly what you want to do forever - just figure out something about yourself and it is all forward progress. I have my therapy, but even that is falling behind because of schedule changes 😅 I’m trying to laugh, draw, and game all these bad feels away, but i have a hard hitting guilt after doing all that, too. In my experience college wasn’t worth it. I’m an introvert so I really didn’t make many friends and I went not knowing what I wanted to do in life and now I’m paying for a degree I don’t use at all. After I got a job I grew out of my shell a lot and it helped me grow a lot as a person, now I have a career and life I love. Not saying it’s not worth it for others but don’t let this get you down, it’s just what was meant to be like Roni said. If you want to go to school maybe try taking a few courses at like a community college or something. Could help you get inspired

you can always try to apply for college out of state, I currently go to college for broadcast production so if you want to come to mine, its a nice campus and I can even show you around. The college that said no is missing out on an amazing person and they do not know what they are thinking.

I took a gap year, did 3 years of university, failed 1 module in my final year, redid the year for this 1 module and decided towards the end of the year that I wouldn't do any work and gave up. I hated university and never wanted to do it, only did it to please my dad. Wish I never went and wasted my money. It's not for everyone and we can still achieve just as much without going to university!
Just do some online classes! Some certificates in subjects that you love, then take that work and use it here! You already have a following... Make your OWN way. You got this!

Aw it’s okay Andrew, I’m happy you have a supportive team around you during this time! I would recommend just looking for general work alongside doing UA-cam? Just keep looking until you find something, once you start getting interviews etc you’ll start feeling some purpose and then even if it’s not the job for you, just get yourself some money until you find something that you really want to go after. Have you wanted to stream? Reaction videos? Mukbangs? Podcast? There’s so many different paths to go, you will surely find something! I believe in youuuuuuuuuu! I got rejected from all the colleges I applied back in 2021, I decided to do community college then a gap year. I just want you to understand that 1) if you think college is not for you, then please don't do it. Don't feel forced to, you're amazing just the way you are, your youtube videos really accompanied me through my depression and it made my days so much lighter and happier. School is not for everyone. I went back to technical college when I was 32?! You can start at a tech college and move to a 4 year if you want. College doesn’t always teach you what’s out in the real world. They give you the basics and a foundation to start. But lots of people don’t use their degrees. Your got This!

Hey Andrew! Ever since high school to college, whenever I apply to a school or a course, I always get rejected or just on the waiting list. In college, I applied fpr medical technology but I got in in nursing instead. I ended up loving it and I knew I loved it more than my first choice. I then passed the boards and now a registered nurse. In med school, I also got rejected even though my credentials were excellent. I applied for a reconsideration and I was immediately accepted. I am now a 3rd year medical student and hopefully a clinical clerk by the summer. Everything works out in the end! Let me tell you one of my favorite quotes, “If the plan doesn’t work, change the plan but never the goal.”

You could always do online courses on Udemy or wherever! I feel like that might be a good use of your time. If you don't need college for what you're interested in or may want to pursue, focusing on improving specific skills instead of sitting in core classes you'll never use would be beneficial!

You have so many opportunities to take on an apprenticeship or volunteer in places and work your way up from there honestly Andrew you have a lot going for yourself. UA-cam is always a thing!
Andrew you’re overthinking it, you’re really young - it’s okay to feel lost and not know what to do with life, there’s people in their 40s/50s that are still figuring it out.
If you don’t want to go to college and UA-cam is something you want to do as a career then I say put a 1 year plan and go extra hard - study, keep coming up with new ideas, work on your material and editing every day, make it so every video is a 10/10 and watch them views roll in.
What I do advise is, since time is on your side, you should 100% open up an IRA account with Vanguard or a similar investment company and invest monthly in a total market index fund and don’t touch it for 30+ years and watch the magic of compounding do it’s work…something I wish someone told me when I was your age.

I used to think college was a necessary step for me after high school. I transitioned from dual enrollment in late high school to doing college full-time once I graduated high school. I was extremely discouraged when I had some severe health issues that forced me to stop school when I was over halfway through with my undergrad degree. But this forced me to broaden my narrow view of what I thought was the “only” way to a successful, fulfilling life. Now I realize college is helpful inasmuch as it serves you. For some people, it really doesn’t serve much of a purpose. Sorry for the rambling! Hope that helps a little bit! Loved seeing how supportive your family is! 💓

Andrew this is just a stepping stone for better things to come. And honestly speaking from experience, college can be a good thing if you’re serious about knowing what you want. It’s not all that it’s cracked up to be and I personally felt like I wasted my time not knowing exactly what I wanted. There was definitely some good too. But honestly I would say this time is just going to be space and freedom in some sense for you to work on the things and the passions you want as well as operation shfhm 🤣🤣
It may feel like you have limited options, but there are actually so many options and they just don't seem obvious. I suggest you do SOMETHING. Then learn from it - what do you like about it, what do you not like about it, etc. - if it's not the perfect thing for you, move on to something else and learn from it as well. It could be a job or jobs, college classes, trade school, etc. You don't have to know exactly what you want to do forever - just figure out something about yourself and it is all forward progress. In my experience college wasn’t worth it. I’m an introvert so I really didn’t make many friends and I went not knowing what I wanted to do in life and now I’m paying for a degree I don’t use at all. After I got a job I grew out of my shell a lot and it helped me grow a lot as a person, now I have a career and life I love. Not saying it’s not worth it for others but don’t let this get you down, it’s just what was meant to be like Roni said. If you want to go to school maybe try taking a few courses at like a community college or something. Could help you get inspired

I was rejected from my first choice of college too so I understand the feeling of “what now” but all you can really do is pick yourself up and figure it out. In retrospect it was actually a blessing in disguise.

you can always try to apply for college out of state, I currently go to college for broadcast production so if you want to come to mine, its a nice campus and I can even show you around. The college that said no is missing out on an amazing person and they do not know what they are thinking.

I took a gap year, did 3 years of university, failed 1 module in my final year, redid the year for this 1 module and decided towards the end of the year that I wouldn't do any work and gave up. I hated university and never wanted to do it, only did it to please my dad. Wish I never went and wasted my money. It's not for everyone and we can still achieve just as much without going to university!
Just do some online classes! Some certificates in subjects that you love, then take that work and use it here! You already have a following... Make your OWN way. You got this!
Some schools will reject you if they don’t think you would actually go. It’s about their ranking and acceptance and commitment rates.
