The girl narrating this did SUCH an amazing job. She told the story from EVERY point of view. She talked about how sad it is that Travis had to die, but also how it needed to happen, but the whole scenario shouldn’t have begun in the first place. And how Sandra, despite all that she did wrong, lived a sad life, and from her pov especially, it was really horrible what happened. It makes viewers think about everyone’s perspective and how it effected everyone, rather than how most ppl would narrow-mindedly see this as it’s strictly the animals fault. Or something like that. @@user-ib8ib3id8n it’s humans fault for bringing wild animals into our society to be pets. they don’t belong here
There's no reason to have a wild animal in the house if you're not rehabilitating it. Exotic pets get lots of positive attention online but no matter how pampered they are, having it out of their natural habitat is animal abuse, and endorsing trafficking.
yup. especially one stolen from their mother as a baby with the purpose of being bred. it's so sick, I don't get it. Humans are so selfish.
@@HannahTheHorribleIt's really shady. I'm guessing the animal sanctuary was tricked into thinking the person originally buying Travis was part of a breeding program. Or it must've just been a really shitty sanctuary.
The problem is that most of these animals are born already in captivity, and would never be able to survive in the wild.
@@captaincaptain2128 which is why they should be kept in a sanctuary with trained people who understand their needs. Some undomesticated animals can't survive on their own and its amazing that we as a species can help that animal survive. But it should be for the animals welfare first and only. Exotic pets will never be happy in the wrong habitat

I just feel bad for Travis. He never had a chance, literally stolen as a newborn and raises as a human, something he wasnt, and drugged apparently. I mean what did they expect, he was a wild fricken animal.

poor charla.
theyre truly amazing human beings
INR what an amazing person
"You can take the animal out of the wild but you cannot take the wild of of the animal."
There is a very good reason this phrase works. Wild animals are not toys or trophies. Even domestic animals can become similar if the situation calls for it. Domestic are not as likely but still. A dog or cat is fine enough. One is purposely playing with fire while dousing themselves with gasoline when it comes to wild animals
You shed a lot of light on this story. This was so tragic and so many components to this heartbreaking story. You really handled this so delicately and the sentiments you expressed align with mine perfectly. This was so sad. The animal was simply too large for them to take on that kind of risk.
Honestly, charla is really strong, I’m surprised she lived. And after her facial transplant. She didn’t look that bad at all. Definitely not enough for her to get disturbed looks in public with children crying. AND she now has 4 million dollars. What a strong woman she is
If my face got ripped off I'd want a hell of a lot more than 4 million
Lucky, she is.
@@tabora_ she was originally suing for 50 million but settled for 4 after Sandra had died
She did die, she died in 2009. I believe it was due to an on going infection.
@@MusicAndSkittles I bet she died because of the face transplant, the body naturally tries to kill any foreign "body" That gets in the system, that's why these people take immunosuppressants that make sure this immune system kind of goes to sleep, the outcomes are all bad though:
- you'll need a new transplant because the medicines are not able to keep the foreign body alive anymore, so you decide to go under surgery, which is not a 100% safe procedure, often it has a 50% possibility of being successful.
- you'll need a new transplant, but you don't have the money to afford it, so all you can do is appreciate the time you're left with before your own body kills itself (or more precisely the foreign body).
- another way of dying after a transplant is by the medicines themselves which, like I've said, make your immune system weaker and therefore it makes you more likely to die due to other health conditions (these immunosuppressants also increase the risk of getting cancer).
No one gives the healthcare workers that helped Charla enough recognization. Imagine having to see the pure brutality of what happened to that poor woman. Even with the counseling, I'd have nightmares.
Ikr? Like imagine having to fix a poor womans face and you probably are stressing out not to let her die
healthcare workers in general deserve more recognition.

It’s because they choose the profession, it’s not like it was just dumped on them no warning. Tons of training and disillusionment is given to paramedics prior to working. They’re some of the most qualified and unaffected by gore and other physical trauma.
Yeah..
Well I’m sure It’s not that surprising as doctors and plastic surgeons have to deal with crush injuries, burn injuries, etc. they are doctors after all.
Hearing the police call made me full on cry, the friend truly think her friend was dead and crying for help, this is really one of the most sadist story's :(
She is a bad azz woman! Her surgeons are absolutely AMAZING 🙌🏾
it seems like a no-brainer that owning undomesticated, 'exotic' animals should be illegal for private citizens. qualified & licensed rescues/rehabilitation centres should be the only places to find these animals besides their natural habitats.
Totally agree, but apparently it's STILL legal in some states (in the US at least) to own animals like this. It makes NO sense. It's so unethical.
@@HannahTheHorrible the relationship we have, as humans, with animals, needs serious work. it's so discouraging to hear that it's still legal despite this case.
Australia is super strict and it works pretty well. Only native exotics are allowed unless you have extensive training and apply for a license that is quite expensive and register every animal. Even native exotics are heavily monitored if they are potentially dangerous or have potential to be taken from the wild (snakes, lizards, some birds, etc). Of course not everyone follows the rules but it does help in reducing the exotic animal trade.
@@noway8222 that definitely sounds like a much better system, although I must admit I can't see a reason for individuals to have exotic animals in the first place, even if they're native species. still, things aren't black and white, and I'd much rather have Australia's approach than the US one.
@@freelancescientists because there's an appreciation for the animal. I keep taratulas because they're easy to care for, in abundance, are an odd pet, and remind me how beautiful australian nature is. Technically many pet birds in the US are exotic because they come from Australia, and yet they are kept as pets all over the world. And technically dogs are exotic too. It just depends on your definition and if the animals have become mainstream.
When I saw Charla's face, I didn't feel disturbed or disgusted I just felt so sad she had to endure so much pain

Hearing the details about Travis going back to his cage after being shot broke my heart, I cried. Poor baby should never have been in that situation. I feel so bad for Charla, bless her for going through what she did. Her reconstruction looks phenomenal for the time.
I heard this exact 911 call so many years ago and I couldn't sleep for a whole week straight :( glad she's okay
the ANGER I felt when that 911 operator was just like, “what is the monkey doing?” the entire time when she was literally YELLING “HES RIPPING HER APART HES EATING HER.”
Fr bro
That really pissed me off too. He should be able to tell from the terror in her voice what kind of situation it was
I can't say for sure since I'm not an operator, but I'm pretty sure he wanted her to stay on the phone. Granted, he didn't to the best job, but officers need the most information they can get in case of an emergency. Also, he might have known what was happening, but he just wanted to stay updated on the situation.
But that is how they work, they stay calm and keep asking obvious or unimportant questions, it's to keep people in the line longer so they can hear what is happening. So often during bad events, people call police and then go back to the scene, but the police want you to be there on the phone by the time they get there
@@scourgehh714
You did not hear the complete call. Search and listen to the beginning. He is amused and asks not because he wants to do anything or whatever, but repeats how you would repeat to somebody who tries to tell you a joke.
I don't think apes make good pets. I've always felt sad for Travis. I don't think most primates are currently good pets.
yeah they dont. its really sad that theyre seen more as minature humans and props. its really sad tbh that a lot of the people taking care of them dont fully know how to take care of them as normal animals.
@@stinkrat167 I agree. I feel like the only time a primate might make a good pet is if they can’t live in the wild, but also didn’t do good in places like zoos that emulate the wild. Some people have small monkeys but I feel like they’re mostly caught from the wild so idk.
I never get why people would keep dangerous wild animals as pets or keep them in zoos/aquariums and force them to do tricks and keep them in a place where it’s obviously not natural for them. Then get shocked when they finally snap.
@@maixe13 Where I live, zoos exist to teach people and help breed and releases endangered animals. They also help special needs animals. But yeah. I don’t know why people want animals like wolves, monkeys, foxes, etc. as house pets. They need so much more space than we can provide.
Primates are our cousins, treating them as if they’re just us is cruel. They have their own lives they’re supposed to live.
This is exactly why wild animals are always wild animals and keeping them like pets is completely horrific and cruel
This broke my heart for Travis. Absolutely bawled my eyes out. The fact that he tried to get to his bed has my sobbing.
“A chimp killed my friend!”
“What’s happening with your friend?”
If you can’t hear that you shouldn’t be a 911 operator
Fr, like he pissed me off so much just instantly send the police.
They probably wanted to be positively sure of the situation they were in. And it possibly caught them by surprise
@@Dustrin true but also you shouldn’t freeze if you’re a 911 operator. You need to be prepared to work through shock or weirdness and also “a chimp is killing my friend” isn’t that hard to understand. He focused on the chimp instead of the friend. “Who’s killing your friend?” Is what he should’ve asked
@@sketchjunior7072 I mean 911 operators are still humans so they go through being shocked as well. And hearing something like that, i think anyone would be shocked as it’s such a bizarre situation. This is why having pets is such a big responsibility. Not only does it require a lot of attention from it's owners and it's a big money investment, but accidents like this is always prone to happening. In my opinion, with buying any exotic animal like this, more than extra precaution should've taken place, especially when you own a 200+ pound chimp. Very sad story, but I must say the person telling the story is so captivating. You are a wonderful story teller.
I read a more in-depth account of this incident where, apparently, Travis had been showing signs of aggression ever since reaching sexual maturity and his mother dosed him with human-grade Xanax to keep him calm. The trouble is, Xanax makes chimps hallucinate vividly. So when he attacked, Travis was both in a deep state of emotional distress due to grief from the loss of family members, AND violently hallucinating. Idk but just knowing that he was most likely just as scared as the humans involved during the entire incident makes it twice as heartbreaking.

I really appreciate the way you talked about your own dog and how you're understanding and reminding people that they are animals first. As someone who owns over 60 different exotic animals, I actually struggle more getting some people to understand that they ARE NOT cuddly friendly animals that want attention and affection. People will see me work with them and say "oh they're so calm" or "oh they love you" but don't understand that they're calm because I have experience handling them and give them proper care ad respect, not because they "love" me. Really good to hear someone who actually DOES have the fluffy pets understand :) Great video as always, and to Charla, SLAY girl SLAY! What a champ!
I remember being a kid hearing of this story and thinking of Travis as evil. As a kid, I imagined him as this monster who was out for blood, in a way the media humanized him therefore I did too. (I was 8 when this happened) and now that I’m older I realize Travis wasn’t evil. He was simply just an animal doing what animals do and it was not his fault at all. Exotic animals belong in the wildlife or animal rehabilitation centers.
I disagree. It was his fault.
@ Erika K I don’t really think it was his fault, he has being drugged and he was also a wild animal and shouldn’t have actually been a pet

Yessss. I get it if they're rescues or at a sanctuary where we try to give them a safe place or keep them from going extinct. They don't belong in our homes.

This whole story is incredibly tragic for all involved, especially Travis. Sandra’s voice in that 911 call is so so haunting. Charla is such an amazingly strong person

My mom almost lost her nose when her friend's dog bit her in the face. It was a little shih tzu. Luckily she got stitches and fully recovered. Things like this can happen with almost any animal, no matter how harmless they may seem.

Small dogs are extremely aggressive. Mostly because of humans encouraging bad behavior and also because of the fact small dogs feel scared when they feel threatened by anything bigger than them.
@@ZekDraco Yes! People rarely discipline and as you said sometimes even encourage the aggressive behaviour of a small dog, just because it's "funny". Then they act surprised when the poor dog who doesn't know any better, bites someone
My shih tzu puppy did that to my sister. Luckily, she let go immediately and seemed very concerned when my sister said “ow.” She likes to bite something when she gets excited or agitated, but we’ve trained her to use her toys now. Sometimes there’s shoes and slippers, but she’s getting better lol
Most of the time it’s smaller dogs that bite, this is usually because people see them as harmless. Golden retrievers are also known to bite because people think that “smart” dogs don’t need to be trained as well

If you look harder at Sandra, she wasn’t that great of a person. She had a prescription medication addiction and was the cause of her daughter’s death. She took some pills and then got behind the wheel of the car with her daughter. Charla and her daughter had experienced hard times, and had stayed with Sandra for a period prior to the attack, Sandra used this to guilt Charla to come help her with Travis. Charla did not want to come help, she told Sandra to call the police.

I can not overstate this enough, we have a language barrier between us and animals. We can interpret what we think they are trying to communicate with us, and knowing body language for the species is /helpful/ but it is NOT GARUNTEED. Chimps only “love” mama when they’re small.
Travis looked big and old enough to understand the alpha male mindset.

Wow. I listen to a lot of true crime and other intense content. This one was particularly upsetting. This is so gut wrenching because once Travis entered into the human world it was nearly inevitable that something like this would happen.
I can see how easy it might be to treat him like a human child as closely related as we are to chimps, but they are still wild animals and are a lot more closely in tune with their instincts than we are.
I’d be curious if Travis was showing any signs of agitation or aggression in particular on that day that were not being listened to.
Either way this will definitely be a story that sticks with me.
Real life will always be scarier than any horror movie. This unfortunately is nature and was a natural reaction to Travis feeling threatened
Call Dr Loomis he will shoot Travis 6 times
It’s not a natural situation. Travis was on Xanax.
Travis was drugged. He had too much Xanax in his system and just snapped. That's what happens when you raise an animal like a human, yet cannot control them. He needed to be drugged after he got big because he was difficult to handle and, naturally, extremely smart. Travis, although he was raised as a human, is an animal. Of course, he has animal instincts and reasonably has animalistic traits. Regulations need to be set to keep wild animals like Travis safe and in the wild where they belong.
Apparently, Xanax makes them hallucinate. Poor thing was probably just as terrified as the people he attacked
I hate to blame anyone but I’m blaming Sandra for the whole thing. She gave him Xanax, she knew he was pissed off to begin with, she BOUGHT Travis in general, so I am putting the whole thing on her.
i never heard of him being drugged before…wow
Listen I don’t care if it’s an animal. If that thing is hurting/to the point of killing someone even though I know there animals and it’s on instinct, I’m grabbing something to kill the animal with no questions asked. I’m sad for the lady to the point where tears are forming. I could give less of a shit about the chimpanzee.
Yeah apparently she gave him Xanax to calm him down because he was like a teen and was aggressive so he was going thru a lot of emotional distress and he was hallucinating :(
I have to say I feel like the 911 operator handled the call very well. He tried to comfort her and saying “I know it’s hard”
For her to just "keep on, keeping on" is fucking extremely powerful. I have no doubts if I was disfigured in such a manner I would have ended things.
Tbh no one should keep chimpanzees as pets. Or even monkeys.

Right yeah there smart and animals can be loving but people seem to forget there still animals and still have there animal nature in there system
monke is gud at zoo, no give banan to him
Sometimes it feels like we humans believe we are the absolute pinnacle of life, and that making “lesser” animals more like us is this amazing thing, anthrophising primates especially. In reality they are perfectly fine at the level they are at, why can’t we let animals be animals???
Exactly! Animals act the way they do because they do it to survive! They don’t belong in human environments in the same way that a wolf can’t live like a fish; they aren’t built for it. Travis should have been in a jungle with other chimps, not in a house.
@@gregjayonnaise8314 yes!!!
Humans will do that shit to other humans too. Put native kids in schools to act more white. Make autistic children act more "normal". Humans are absolutely discusting creatures at times.
@Legend of the Blue Macerator chimps sent savage they just have evolved to survive differently then we do. They are wild animals
People do this with dogs. Constantly projecting human emotions on to them. When reality is, every single thing they do is for food. That's it. Let's not act like they wouldn't eat you within a day of you dying in your house. Stop treating animals like people. They are not your "fur babies". They are _ANIMALS._
In my country (Norway) there's this one chimpanzee that was kept in a domestic household after his mother in the zoo rejected him and bit his fingers off. The owner of the zoo decided to take the chimp home and raise him (as chimpanzees are a threatened species, he didn't want the poor baby chimp to die). He raised him together with his wife and two daughters and the chimp lived like a normal human child. The zoo owner used Julius (the chimp) as an attraction to the zoo, and while he was small he was allowed to be pet and held by visitors, but after a few years (I think 3 or 5 years, I don't remember, but he was still small in size) he was too dangerous to be kept around humans. They tried to reunite him with some of the other young chimpanzees, but he didn't understand their body language and got scared and wanted to go back to the humans. Julius then escaped multiple times because the cage he was kept in wasn't secured properly, and he attacked people (not as severely as this situation, but he bit a truck driver). Poor Julius got too big to be with the only kind he knew, and got very depressed after getting locked up in this prison-like enclosure, and they debated on wether or not to put him down due to him not living a thriving life. The leader of the chimpanzee "pack" died of old age, and so the zoo owner and keepers decided to put Julius back in to try to make him into the pack leader. It luckily worked out and is still living with his own kind in the chimpanzee pack in Norway. He still gets super happy when he gets to spend time with people through the gates, and love to do "human things" like paint, eat cake, drink soda, and play with human things (clothing, toys, sun glasses, etc.). I'm so glad that the people who worked with Julius actually knew how wild animals should live, and reunited him with his own kind successfully. I wish something similar happened to Travis, as I've seen a similar situation (Julius) have a better ending.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge of Julius the chimp. And you're really good with how you convey the story. I'm glad this story you shared had a somewhat happier ending.
