  • Join Jason Smith, my buddy who is a seasoned survival expert with over a decade of experience, as he shares invaluable techniques for building discreet shelters in the woods. In this video, Jason emphasizes the importance of remaining unobtrusive and demonstrates how to create a well-camouflaged shelter that blends seamlessly into its surroundings, making it nearly invisible to passersby.
Drawing from his extensive background, including teaching at the SERE school for u.s. army special operations, Jason provides insights into essential survival tactics. He highlights the importance of using sharp, well-maintained tools for shelter construction to minimize effort and noise, making the process more efficient and less detectable.
Additionally, Jason discusses the impact of local flora, like rhododendron and mountain laurel, on shelter-building strategies and how these plants vary by region. Tune in to learn from Jason's expertise and enhance your survival skills in non-permissive environments.

I'm homeless 3 years now and 69 years old. I live this stuff daily. I also lived in the Alaska bush for over 30 mining and trapping. This could be soooo expanded on!
    Thanks

Keep in mind I stay at the spot for 2 weeks and move on to a new location so I don't leave trails.
      1. I dig a trench a little bigger than my body and about 16" deep. Then, I line it with a tarp and put down an insulation layer. Thickness will depend on the time of year. Then I get in my sleeping bag and fold the excess tarp over me. For the tarp or pancho overhead, I use the bunji cords with hooks for tie off for quick removal. The tarp is about 24" above the ground and tapers down to 12" around the sides. I pick the absolute nastiest spot for someone to navigate.
Since the sheriff dept. uses thermal on their birds and drones to hunt the homeless. I always put a thermal blanket under my tarp. My bigger problem is methheads following me out to camp.
If I'm close to a trail I will often make a fake camp in the opposite direction. It's like fishing, people will check it out and immediately move to another spot. I laid there and watched this play out a hundred times.
All of my camp gear is cheap Walmart gear (dispoasable) except for my thermal and pvs14 I had before becoming homeless.
I never cook or leave any spore around my camp. I also wrap my phone in six layers of foil and never take it out where I sleep. I also use assorted perimeter alarms sometimes, I also have one strung around where I sleep, mainly for black bears.
During the day I was windows and clean garbage cans, by night I live like a commando.
I only commented because of the "Non permissive" title. Everywhere I camp is non permissive and if lucky, it's only told to move on or trespassed at worst arrested or go gladiator with a cold steel shovel.
The hardest skill was teaching my dog to not to bark, growl only and hand signals. He is my best multi tool. I can't imagine it without him.

@DL_2025_A My protection from bears in the lower 48 is a bear banger pistol from 5th ops. It's a flare gun, and I haven't found a meth head wanting to try a flare yet. The flaregun is not a firearm either, but if you put airsoft bbs or any other projectile in it, well, you're on your own. It's a party favorite in a group setting, though. I also carry bear spray.

@DL_2025_A washing windows and garbage cans about $2k a month. SSI $900 a month. I also buy lots of stuff from yard sales and list on Craigslist or Ebay for another $1k a month. In December, I'm buying property outright. I'm not sure where yet, I left Alaska because I can't do the cold anymore, but I love living off the grid.

Stealth camping doesn't necessarily have to al ways be about SHTF. For me, I simply do it because I like the adventure of camping linked with the fact that every bloody acre of land is ( here in Britain) owned by someone. So unless one opts for the tame option of paying to pitch on a friggin campsite, the only option is to basically trespass. I'm fine with it because I'm not going to destroy anything and hopefully, the land owner will be none the wiser.

Excellent discussion! Takeaway: when you can't see into some brush, that's the place to setup your shelter.
Question: Since the layover branch was wedged and well supported in the Y of the sapling, why need to wrap it 5 times to lash it with the vine? (illustrating vines as lashing perhaps?)

Hey I shouldn't comment yet as I've only just started to watch so I shouldn't comment yet, but I do think it has been gradual for a while but remember the Bible talks about birth pains and things are getting worse quicker and faster and harder each time😊.
Anyway love what you do shame I haven't sometimes got the time to watch it all but I really appreciate what you do😊

With thermal you can see through things that are thin, like plastics especially. Not Mylar though, unless you heat it up with your body heat or similar. Two layers is good; a reflective layer and an ambient layer. Foliage is a good second layer, but also keep in mind that it is often cooler than ambient due to the moisture in it and evaporation. I mention this because dark camo in the sun near but not under vegetation is likely to be significantly warmer on the surface than the surrounding vegetation. By the way, I can passively see thermal with my gear in absolute pitch black darkness and daylight, and I'm just a hobbyist with a modest budget. Thermal does generally work better at night as there is a sharper temperature gradient.

In my experience, the bigger the difference in temperature the clearer the image.

If you're being actively hunted, it's hard to counter dogs...funny how our enemies in the Sandbox didn't seem to like dogs very much - was that a cleanliness issue, from the Koran?

    • @aaronbeach8929

In Islam, they do believe dogs are unclean and only allowed them for security reasons and must be kept outside. I work with Muslim dude his parents are from Bangladesh. And I always ask him about this type of stuff. I'm a Christian myself and we both respect each others religions which is nice for a change. Respect from 🇬🇧✝️👍😎🌱🌲

Civilization has been eroding humanity for about 3 thousand years actually. It's the frog in the bubble bath. There will be probably many breaking points though. It's a combination of factors. We weren't made to live like this; "progress" is a lie we tell ourselves to feel content, but really, on an individual level, we're made weak, complacent, and dependent, like ants in a colony.

@@ONThree Have you considered Everclear/grain alcohol? They say it’s safe to burn in enclosed areas(no toxic fumes), can be used as an antiseptic or to sanitize gear, and you can drink it(could work to make a new friend or be used for bartering in a pinch too). The cost is the only downside I see but I consider my alcohol burner to be just for emergencies or non permissive environments. A plastic pint or half pint bottle is basically flat too so easy to pack(that adds a food grade container to your gear also👍🏻). Keep up the good work/vids!
