Don't Buy This Travel Tripod! - Ulanzi Zerof38 review

  • The first video we've filmed in F-Log 2 on the FujiFilm XS-20 and the first negative review I've had to give on a product. I was unfortunately very let down by this tripod that had SO MUCH hype surrounding it. From a lackluster quick release system, to shoddy build quality, and customer service that left a lot to be desired.. There are plenty of better quality products on the market, and many companies who will offer better customer service as well. Is this a bit of a hot take? Maybe.. but I can't be the only one who's had a bad experience with this tripod or with Ulanzi. Do better!

      I’ll always give honest reviews and not hold anything back, but when you pay for something out of your own pocket and have some actual time in the field with it, I feel like that adds some credence to it as opposed to only having a product for a few days.

      To be fair they do state when the items are given to them for free. At least for the reviewers in the U.S., suing is pretty popular here so when they say whatever they're saying is purely their opinion, its kinda safe to trust them.
      Also if they dont state any negativity, pros and cons of competitors against the item, or disclaimer, that would be a red flag for me.
      Also use your judgement by doing your own research and look at other reviewer's opinion (even the reviews on websites like Amazon) and even look at comments for additional thoughts.
      I hardly think reviewers have a lot of power to influence any educated folks out there. And those larger UA-cam channels will take damage in their reputation if they recommend something bad.
      Regardless, Ulanzi did this man poorly and Im glad to have come across this.

    I came across your video through a search on reliability of the Ulanzi Zero F38. I appreciate the review and the heads up. I have been trying to decide between this tripod and the Heipi. You just helped me make up my mind. Products do, on occasion have build quality issues, but poor customer service is something I make a point of avoiding. Thanks for the review.

    I gotta tell you that I just received my Zero Y as I wanted Arca Swiss and the tripod has been solid with no issues. It is well built and rugged. I have checked everything you have described and found none of the issues. I perhaps have one that had good quality control. A bit pricey yes but the quality from what I can tell is top notch. It is a bit fiddly removing a section of the upright to get down low in the splayed out position. My one concern is one of customer service, the availability of parts if needed for North America and a response from them on an email I sent them with a question which was not responded to. I plan to send another email to see about parts to see whether they respond or not? If they don't then I will need to make a decision to keep or return. If they seem to value customer service and prove it then this tripod is a definite keeper!

    • @GrahamMediaLLC
      @GrahamMediaLLC  7 місяців тому +1

      The tripod itself has sturdy components, I think I truly just had a quality control/defective one. The customer service has been AWFUL. I emailed them a couple more times over the past few weeks to give them another opportunity to make it right. No response, no more responses on their Facebook. I won’t be buying another item from this company just for that reason. If I contact Canon, or FujiFilm, or any of the other companies I’ve bought from, I get great customer service and timely responses. Can’t even get a response from Ulanzi

    Regarding the tripod, I had a structural issue upon arrival and customer service sent me a full replacement. I am very surprised they did not do the same for you. I'm not a fan of the plastic parts of it, but other than that, I don't really have many gripes.
    Regarding their quick release system, I am a huge fan. The fact that there is only one actual retention point that locks in kinda makes me feel uneasy, but with the whole unit in its entirety I feel confident using them. Though I do double check them from time to time to make sure they are secure.

    Graham, thanks for your review of the f38 ulanzi. I just today ordered the zero y which has the arca Swiss head. Being almost 70 I’m still climbing mountains to photograph and weight is becoming an issue so I have been searching for something lighter than my gitzo and Davis Sanford tripods. The zero y seems to fit the bill. Hopefully the one I receive will not have the issues you mentioned. If it does I will prepare to return it or seek relief from my credit card company if their customer service isn’t willing to be of help. Good luck with perhaps getting a 3 legged thing tripod. They make good products but for me I was looking for a weight and size tripod solution.

    • @GrahamMediaLLC

      It’s not necessarily the system itself, it’s the plates. They never seem to stay secure in my camera or lens foot, always coming loose on me. Of the 3 plates I’ve owned, they have all had the rubber grippers come off and had to be reglued. I’ve used the PGYTech system and had much better luck with it.

    I not going to disagree with you, but that is the worst analogy I've ever heard. People are going to look up to you, and you need to do better.
    Ulanzi is a "good" quality cheap equipment that has no customer support. You knew that going in or at least you should have. You want customer support buy Manfrotto or Ifootage and you will pay for it, probably twice the price.
    I can see your frustration over the Tripod, and may well be deserved, but as far as the F38 quick disconnect system you had better remember the F22 and F38 quick disconnect system is what put Ulanzi on the map. The F38 is the benchmark for which all quick disconnects are compared. Without the the F38 system you wouldn't even know who Ulanzi even is and the F38 system is ARCA Swiss compatible so I fail to even see your point.

    • @GrahamMediaLLC
      @GrahamMediaLLC  20 днів тому

      While I understand your point, I pride myself in providing an unbiased review, and will continue to do so. Whether I’m given a free product, or purchase a product with my own money, it’s going to get an equivalent review. Customer service and quality control are two aspects of the consumer experience that should be made aware. And to be frank, I was unaware of the failed customer service of Ulanzi, I bought into the hype surrounding the product that it was the “Peak Design Travel Tripod Killer” when it’s not. As for the F38 design, it’s quite brilliant, the glue used on the base plates leaves some to be desired (and something I’ve only experienced with the Falcam system), when I have owned Vanguards, Manfrotto, and Sirui tripods, I just don’t have a preference to quick release systems in general. My hope is that Ulanzi sees this and does better, even if it does potentially burn a bridge with them. I would rather my viewers (especially those who do this as a hobby), not have the same experience I had with this product and their customer service, which is why I made it a talking point.

    Wouldn’t buying super glue for $2 and doing what they said, which would take all of 5 minutes, be faster and easier than boxing it back up, going to the post office, shipping it out to them and then waiting for a replacement? Even way more time went into making this video than it would’ve taken.

    • @GrahamMediaLLC
      @GrahamMediaLLC  3 місяці тому +1

      You’re correct. But when you’re paying $400 for a premium product, it shouldn’t fail something as simple as quality assurance, and if it does, it shouldn’t be this difficult to get a reasonable response from customer service. Fully understand things slip by, things happen, I’m a business owner myself. What I can’t stand by is how it was handled. It’s not how I would handle a customer and not how I like to be handled. Maybe I’m playing Devil’s Advocate here, but other companies I’ve spent less money at on a comparable product have had much more appropriate customer service responses (Sirui, Peak Design, etc.) which is why I will recommend and stand by those companies.
