How do you needle felt arms & legs and attach them smoothly?

The scarf idea helps a lot. I'm always trying to make a shoulder or knee happen, and I just end up with a weird lumpy growth. Building the joint around the attaching spot might be just what I need to fix this pesky issue. Thanks once again for a nice little set of tips!
