I looked up what happened to his life after this show and it was actually sad, but eventually it became okay. He became an alcoholic/drug addict in Hollywood while pursuing an acting career. When that didn't happen he returned to Pittsburg and got clean and got married and has kids. He works for a distribution company now.
It made me sad when he said he was embarrassed and felt like a chump for a long time. But I guess he eventually realized nobody had ever said anything bad about him being in the show and came to a peace about all of it. They might have framed the show in a positive way when they realized how kind he was. But it was still a traumatic thing to put someone through. Especially for a sensitive soul like him.
must have been hard. he got known bc he got duped but was a nice guy himself. that popularity doesnt translate with acting skills. some agent probably convinced him to use his popularity that way. too bad it was too soon, he could have been earning money as an influencer with his popularity

Hearing Matt in the post-show interview, he was a surprisingly insightful person. Even acknowledged perspectives outside of his own in an empathetic way. His drug/alcohol story is sad and of course we all hoped for more but even though he's a horn-dog Matt showed he truly was a good person that was just down his luck a bit.

As entertaining is the rest of the show was, this ending makes me feel icky for having enjoyed it. So much of it comes off "how do we break it to him without him getting pissed and suing us?"
And yes he could have a lawsuit because even though he signed a bunch of papers, but they acted in bad faith as to what he was signing up for.
I'm not a law expert but I definitely feel like he should've sued and they sucked him off so hard this episode because they knew that

I didn't expect a reality t.v series hit home so hard, but the relatable nature of Matt, mixed with him not knowing it was happening, that made me really happy to see his reaction. He must've been so damned happy and shocked...I really wanna see season 2 and 3 now haha

1:27:00 I kinda see what Hasan means to say but the whole point of the show is making Matt think he ISNT the center of attention, even though he actually is, he didn't question it because he just assumed that he was one of many contestants competing for a prize not the center of the show, there really is no reason for him to have thought that the show was actually about gaslighting him lmao
While I'd imagine a show like this being a net positive for most people, it must really fuck with your head and exacerbate any trust issues you may have had, or create new ones. Glad he's doing well now.

Honestly would have gone over better if they said the whole point was to show that there is no such thing as a Joe shmoe. That even the "Joe shmoes" of the world are still human beings and they each have their own complex goals and emotions. Nobody is a Joe shmoe everyone is somebody to get to know.. would have seemed like a more wholesome goal and made the show look angled to highlight his personality and originality

Remember that the majority of the cast of The Conqueror died of cancer from filiming in Southwestern Utah because of nuclear testing and that that is where Matt is going.

Well actually it was a minority of the cast that developed cancer (about 41%) and an even smaller number died from it (21%) which is completely and firmly within the margin of error for US adults naturally developing and dying of cancer within their lifetime, not to mention a few of the crew were heavy smokers and drinkers.
I’m saying this because myths like this scare people off of nuclear energy which is in my opinion has an important in combatting climate change and the elimination of fossil fuels (of course the tests conducted where for nuclear weapons but the fear of radiation does still affect public support of nuclear energy).
