  • it is high time to sharpen my neglected set of chisels.
Mohoo Sharpening System Honing Guide Sharpening Holder Angle Fixture Angle Gauge for Woodworking Chisel - both parts from banggood for around £65
At the end of the process I still fail to cut a piece of paper... maybe next time

Check out Charnley forest stones as a honing stone. Yes, use the diamond stones to sharpen, then hone (final process) on the Charnley. A Norton fine might suffice instead of the Charnley. Stick at it.

      That is old school.
      Only second hand around (ebay).
As suggested earlier, I need to venture into higher grit stones to get better results.
      Thank you for the comments!

The 1200 grit stone isn’t fine enough to get the final polish that you need to cut paper. You should get a 6000 or 8000 stone. I use water stones. Diamond stones are good for getting the bevel established, after the 1200 then go to a 6000 or 8000 for the secondary bevel. Finally a few passes on the strop.
