To the people saying how he's a bad teacher and all: That may be true, but that's because he's SO accomplished and SO practiced at his bass playing that it's become second nature to him, which is hard to just _teach_. All great artists tend to be like this; they are so intuitive and they've gotten to know their craft so WELL that it's hard for them to put it into words! So Paul may not be the best teacher per se, but in a sense he is one of the best to study from.
It's nothing to do with accomplishment. So you're saying all music teachers are not accomplished? Some people are better suited to teach while others are better suited to work. Paul has songwriting talent but poor technique. A teacher would be the other way around. Absolutely perfect technique and musical knowledge but just doesn't have the ability to write their own compositions..
Hope younger viewers realize that these tips are not just coming from "one of The Beatles", but also from the greatest composer and multi-instrumentalist that ever lived! Gave me a whole new appreciation for just how talented this guy is. His bass playing is totally unorthodox in both hands, but he makes it work for the things he wants to do.
The thing about Paul is he’s a ambitious workaholic perfectionist lol so he’s always getting better at whatever he’s doing. Even his bass lessons sound good
Think people forget. It's the sum of all the parts that make a performer. Paul, I'm sure would not say he was a virtuoso bass player. He didn't have to be. He played guitar, bass, piano. He, in my opinion was, firstly , a songwriter. Songwriters often pen down stuff in basic form, his bass playing often just did what was needed, ie root, major, minor thirds, and fifths, maybe an octave here and there. Nothing wrong with simple bass lines. Bass is there to provide strong rhythm and a time feel. Every now and then it's nice when they let rip with a great solo or riff!
McCartney practically invented rock bass guitar playing and he regularly makes the top 5 of polls of best bass players even now. He is widely regarded by his fellow musicians as being one of the finest bass players around. Being a great musician does not mean you have to play 1000 notes per second and be flash all the time. Macca's harmonic and melodic language on the bass is as developed as that of any rock bass player and better than most.
His playing is so clean in the sense that every note counts and stands true and pure. The most notable characteristic he exemplifies, though, is his damn positive attitude - that's the main difference I see in him and any other musician I usually encounter in rehearsal situations.
Technical facility does not mean musicality. Musicality wins. He is no Jaco or Victor Worten; pick your "best" player and Paul McCartney is on everyone's list because of the musicality.
@@blazeesq2000 Agreed but also songwriting. The more I play the more it's obvious how important that is to distinguish yourself. Eric Clapton headlines Crossroads Festival not Eric Johnson and that's why.
I just friggin love this guy and all his beautiful artistic pieces...I mean, how can you not love PMac and of course his and John’s total and indisputable revolution of modern day music?!?! Myself, I’ve always slightly leaned toward John’s hard, raw and experimental sounds he put into his songs but Paul was the perfect counter-weight to that and vice versa with Paul’s beautiful melodies. The two together, in my opinion, was the absolute golden duo when it came to songwriting, harmonies, innovation, etc etc...
This is Amazing to see Paul just be himself at home and having fun giving a bass lesson...it doesnt get any bigger than this! I could only wish George Harrison gave a gutiar lesson!
***** I think he has always played like this and Paul McCartney has created some of the best bass lines in music. I just can't figure out how he does it, I'm getting a cramp just thinking about it.
+AmesKtown As someone who played guitar for more than 20 years before playing bass seriously, it's pretty natural to to strangle the neck when it's half the size of what you're used to. Paul didn't start out as the bass player, he just ended up the bass player by default.
+AmesKtown Hofner violin basses are known as having very thin necks ("Pencil Necks"). As an owner of a Hofner I can fully relate to what you're saying and to how McCartney holds the neck. Some people like how the necks feel and others prefer wider necks with more girth. I personally love the feel of the Hofner. :)
MegaStickman98 I have never played a Hofner, but they do look as though the neck is very thin. I learned on a Fender P-Bass so the neck was pretty thick. I now mostly play a Stingray 5 J-Bass so I've never played anything with a really thin neck. I guess I like girth. Cheers.
What a thoroughly decent bloke to share a basic amount of info with us plebs, if it was anyone I'd say well done I could follow it, but this is a giant of the 20th century!
@@Natashahoneypot are you stupid or joking? Freddy mercury was in queen, not ABBA, and he played the drums. This is david gilmour from iron maiden, not freddy mercury.
I never saw the Mozartian genius in this when it came out. It just seemed like a solid McCartney pop tune. Hearing it with the dull bass line alone first and _then_ with his simple but brilliant melodic style on top is pretty breathtaking.
+Jay Ritch (Jjonathanhart) He had two as I understood it: One which he purchased in the early years and one he actually got as a gift from the Hofner company once Paul & Beatles got famous! Cant remember which one was stolen though..
+Fredrik Häll His first was purchased in 1961. His second one (which he's using in the video) was purchased in 1963, and is the one most identified with him. Selmer had a third built for him, with gold hardware, in 1964 which was stolen after having been presented to him, and later wound up in a music store in Luton, where it was sold to a band called The Clifftops. The first Hofner was later repaired and refinished, and taken on the road as a spare until 1966 when Macca got the Rickenbacker 4001S, which then went on the road as a spare, but was used extensively in the studio starting with Revolver.
+Apollo Skyline Yes, it was stolen in 1969, most likely from a closet at EMI's Abbey Road studio, along with Harrison's Gretsch Tennessean and second Ric 360-12. Instrument thieves should be flogged.
How could anyone live with themselves knowing they had stolen any guitar from one of THE BEATLE members having no conscious? That would haunt me as long as I live.

Crazy thing is -- back when I was 15, Paul is one of the players I listened to when I was learning bass. I played along with records.
We love Paul!!
This is too COOL.... Learning bass from Paul McCartney..... Love It.....
Nothing cooler than being taught bass by Paul McCartney! Long Live Macca!
Even his bass lessons sound good
I didn't think I could love Paul McCartney anymore than I did until I saw this video.
+MrFireblade67 not "was" he IS :) a songwriter
McCartney practically invented rock bass guitar playing and he regularly makes the top 5 of polls of best bass players even now. He is widely regarded by his fellow musicians as being one of the finest bass players around. Being a great musician does not mean you have to play 1000 notes per second and be flash all the time. Macca's harmonic and melodic language on the bass is as developed as that of any rock bass player and better than most.
And not only a songwriter, but he's composed some classical pieces as well. Ever heard "A leaf" or his Liverpool symphony?
been honored to be your student , thanks mr. Paul
Someone: *makes joke about Paul looking like Beatles’ bassist”
Nate K: THE MOMENT OF TRUTH
Paul - Great tutorial. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Paul, You were my inspiration to learn to play bass guitar as was Hank Marvin lead guitar. Two absolute legends.
I'd love to see his guitar collection. I'm a lefty.
TheLochs same!
I lefty righty
To watch Sir Paul, in so candid a way, knowing the history he represents, is so wonderfully cool.😃
I can proudly say Paul McCartney teached me how to play bass xd
I just friggin love this guy and all his beautiful artistic pieces...I mean, how can you not love PMac and of course his and John’s total and indisputable revolution of modern day music?!?! Myself, I’ve always slightly leaned toward John’s hard, raw and experimental sounds he put into his songs but Paul was the perfect counter-weight to that and vice versa with Paul’s beautiful melodies. The two together, in my opinion, was the absolute golden duo when it came to songwriting, harmonies, innovation, etc etc...
Paul? You make it look so easy! you're a genius! Love you, bro!
This is Amazing to see Paul just be himself at home and having fun giving a bass lesson...it doesnt get any bigger than this! I could only wish George Harrison gave a gutiar lesson!
His fretting technique is bizarre, he just strangles the shit out of the neck.
Matthew McGehee OK. My first instrument was violin so perhaps that's why I'm surprised by his mobility.
Few musicians can play the bass and sing, he is one of them !
Jack fucking Bruce! :)
Sting, Geddy Lee, Phil Lynott, Peter Cetera, Les Claypool, Lemmy, Roger Waters - off the top of my head. Sure there's lots.

You don't play bass, do you?
costew67 Lots are few...
I wish paul was my grandpa
He is very clean
Thank you, have another Werther's Original

Is this what being a padawan feels like
Yes
Please no god I don’t want that rattail braid
Excellent real life instruction from an expert left hander to we left hand bass beginners. Bought a Hofner ignition bass to start off with.
Lol! I love Paul’s sense of humor. He’s never gonna get old 😂.
Teacher needs to learn to have some originality. Reminds me of one of the beatles, too much like that Paul McCartney
That sir is quite clearly Freddie Mercury from ABBA.
@@Natashahoneypot are you stupid or joking? Freddy mercury was in queen, not ABBA, and he played the drums. This is david gilmour from iron maiden, not freddy mercury.
@@Natashahoneypot nah, he is obviously Elton John from Led Zeppelin.
Good Old Fashioned Killer Queen You must be blind. Clearly that’s Eddie Van Halen from BTS.
@@SunnyStreak_ Sorry, Bro. You're right, I didnt have my glasses on.

nah. i searched for this. i love Paul McCartney

Wow! The Master himself! I didn't know McCartney had teaching videos. He ought to do some more
He should release some sort of video that shows him up close, playing some of his best bass lines from Beatles/Wings songs. That would be awesome.
I never saw the Mozartian genius in this when it came out. It just seemed like a solid McCartney pop tune. Hearing it with the dull bass line alone first and _then_ with his simple but brilliant melodic style on top is pretty breathtaking.
Honestly. Blows me away still to this day
This video: (exists)
Davie504: Needs more BASS
yes cause every bass video needs more then one of these souless and shitty overused comments
Slap
slap bASS
Good luck slapping on a hofner. I prefer actual low end as opposed to the more-often-than-not trebly nature of slap bass.
EPICO
He's just such a calming, wholesome guy...
As much as I loved this video, it was hardly a bass lesson, lol.
Stf Tarkas
It was a good humming lesson though.
As a bass player myself I agree. But I love this nonetheless.
Well, it was a lesson (with a lot of freedom) how to play bass on that particular song, at least… 😁
@Paul McCartney had me there for a second lol that’s why the check mark next to the name exists
Private lesson from the genius
He needs John.
We all need John.
Paul, that looks like your original bass you played with THE BEATLES.
+Jay Ritch (Jjonathanhart)
He had two as I understood it: One which he purchased in the early years and one he actually got as a gift from the Hofner company once Paul & Beatles got famous!
+Fredrik Häll The first one he bought was stolen at the Twickenham studio sessions.
The Jam Master, Big Time Beatles fan thanks for all the wonderful memories and music over the years 😍
This is the crazy mofo who played the insane bass line on Hey Bulldog! Probably wrote it in 12 minutes, too.
