DIY Solar Boat With Nornvin Battery Pack And Random Junk!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 вер 2024
- Recently Nornvin sent me a 1500W battery pack, but instead of doing a review I figured I'd build something with it! I pulled out an old sailboat hull I was hoarding, stuck on some old solar panels and a cheap electric trolling motor, and away it went!
Originally I was planning to do a canopy / Jungle Cruise style boat, but @PeterSripol already did that, so I figured I'd make something different! Also I wasn't sure how much that would affect the center of gravity. Since Ax-Man Surplus had some lightweight fuel tank pod things, I used those for outriggers.
This is probably one of my more successful projects, at least on the first try! Usually my DIY prototypes need a little more polishing and refining, but so far the solar boat seems pretty solid. I can run the 12v motor on setting 3 (about 3mph) with just the lighter plug on the Nornvin unit, or I can go up to level 5 (5mph) using the jumper cables (I do have to keep hitting the boost button if I do that).
This is a fun boat for small lakes and areas where gas engines are banned. We might take it out on some other Twin Cities spots in the future!
You can find Nornvin's battery pack here: www.amazon.com...
There's currently a discount from the regular price of $1299 to $799
The only downside of the Nornvin pack is that it doesn't come with many cables. You can find the solar cable here: www.amazon.com...
The dual spiltter for multiple panels is here: www.amazon.com...
And the jumper cable adapter is here: www.amazon.com...

fantastic project! much roomier than putting panels overhead (I would know!)
Thanks! The low headroom on yours was definitely part of my planning process! I'm also enjoying your lobster boat videos, I used to crew on something like that :-)
shade is underrated!
I'm in the middle of doing this with a pontoon with a collapsible roof. so far so good, I think we should be able to make just under a kilowatt at peak sun!
This sort of excellence in jankiness is what I keep coming back for.
I do not think this word 'jankiness' means what you think it means.
Shagadelic
100% I love how almost every episode starts with a pile of non-related parts that most people would toss in the bin except here we usually end up with something pretty rad.
A dagger board would keep the boat going straighter, and being less spinny… great project, and it looked like it was fun to make.
dagger would help very little... need a rudder, even if its a fixed rudder
@@davharzin2370 WAIT. Thats just a daggerboard
@@davharzin2370 No, it needs a daggerboard for stability which is why the original manufacturer of the boat provided the facility to fit one. A rudder is for steering on sailboats or with inboard motors, when you have an outboard on such a small boat a separate rudder is not required.
Daggerboards are for cats. This needs a centerboard
@DonHavjuan Nope, plenty of small single hulled boats use daggerboards. A daggerboard fits down vertically into the slot built into the hull, which is what this boat is designed to have. A centreboard is attached via a pivot near the top so it can swing backwards and up into a housing.
Glad to see the solar panels in use! Perhaps I'll get around to building something from the Apollo100 one of these days 🤔
Thanks again, this was a fun project!
Can't wait for part two for the satellite dish addition. lmao
Other than the unwarranted, brutal attack on the milk crate manufacturers, this is one of my favorites yet.
Never before have I seen a UA-camr I want to hang out with more
Been watching your videos for a few months now. I have a passion for radio, satilites, electronics, solar... even boating. Now I find out you're in Minnesota too? Like looking in a mirror. Wish I could make more time for the awesome projects you are doing. Keep it up!
lol these videos have slowly shown up in my feed over the last few weeks. Same. Also same. Living in LA but mostly grew up in MN.
Fun project, great video! 👍
I made a solar powered canoe a few years ago, but lost most of my video clips when my phone went in the lake 😂 I still managed to make summary video though. One of my more popular non-forging videos.
Sounds fun, I'll check it out :-)
If you get sick of pushing the button on the DC booster to get to level 5 on the trolling motor, you could get an AC to DC inverter or power supply and plug into the AC outlets. Since you're getting plenty of power with the solar panels, the losses due to the invertor will be negligible.
Yep, that's an option I considered. A little inefficient but the solar panels were making plenty of juice even early in the morning with the sun low.
"The Minnesota DNR would like to know your location"
What does this mean? DNR?
@@SvobodniyNicit stands for Department of Natural Resources. They are the people who police "Natural Resources", such as fishing, hunting, and boating. They primarily look for people breaking laws related to the outdoors basically. So if you put a boat on the water without registration they could give you a ticket
@@NarNarHD Okay, Got It!
@@NarNarHDAre you required to registered any boat in USA and Minnesota specifically? Where I live you have to register only if your boat is longer than 4 meters or engine is more powerful than 10 kW. If your one is too small or not powerful enough, you can still register but it is not necessary but I'm not sure whether you have to register to access big rivers and sea.
@@pavuk357 Non-motorized watercraft 10ft or less do not require registration.
Your wife must be quite understanding with your whole collection. You always surprise me with each video. Thank you for sharing. I learn something each time.
This man is living a childhood dream! Bravo!
Im just so glad it doesnt look ridiculous.
Came here form your satellite videos and was reminded what youtube should be like. Thank you!
I found this guy recently and got immediately addicted! Love his enthusiasm and talent to convey the joy of fiddling around with junk to make something beautiful, interesting and funny... Keep up the good work!
Nice job man. Grab your pi-quarter and get a noaa pass from the lake sometime. Keep up the great work.
The Benevolent Orange Man watches in confusion from the shore as the young buck pushes off into unknown waters and wonders to himself what happens if the giant battery pack gets dunked. Benevolent Orange Man wishes him well.
A solar-powered boat, what a brilliant idea and a fantastic project! I really appreciate the combination of using both used and new components for the projects. And even when the sun isn't shining and the batteries are depleted, you can still sail with the boat. I find this fusion of a solar-powered boat and a sailboat to be really impressive.
This guy is living the life I want, this is my reaction every time I see your videos, support from China.
Nice project - a paddle will get you through those weeds
Great project Gabe, always fun to see someone ‘messing around’ in a boat. Glad it held together on the bone shaker roads, sounds like your roads are about as good as the majority of England’s. Best wishes
writing without watching. A paddlewheel design will be a chef's kiss level of satisfying
You could use a relay to seamlessly switch between the jump start booster and cigarette lighter. I think if you wire the relay to energize from the jump starter to switch the input to the motor over to it, you can press the jump start button when you want to use the higher speed, and then when the time runs out it'll switch back to the lighter port, assuming you've switched back to a lower speed at that point so it doesn't immediately cut out the power to the lighter port
Fantastic! Use what you got. Thx to Norvin for the battery. Eric.
All it's missing is a weather satellite receiver/decoder setup, since you have so much excess power it should be no problem to run that!
Hey I recognize that boat! It was super cool meeting you at the boat launch, keep up the awesome content!
Thanks! Yeah that was fun, always interesting when someone recognizes me or my terrible boats. I keep meaning to get out on the lake with this more often, but we're running out of nice weather!
Stick the daggerboard in to make steering a bit more reasonable
Don't think I have one for this, although I might have a spare for my little sailing dinghy that might fit.
Great project and very executed. You have no limits.
The chaos, yet very nice plan and execution in your videos makes you just so sympathetic :D
Nice Project, love your videos!
Great job ❤ Now can you get it registered 😂??? What would be neet is to make it look like TOUGY is towing it around 😂😂. 73 Leo.
Well that was a cool little project and a very good hull choice to make it all work!
GREAT IDEAS, Amazing channel, as always, hats off bro!!
Freaking love it. Great job for the parts!
That’s an awesome project! I would like to do something similar with my Kayak.
Lovely project! thank you sir!
I just loved to watch your video!
Very symmetrical!
That's epic man. Looks super fun :D.
Congrats on the success of the project.
Good deal, always fun to have a successful first run!
The ultimate eco boat project: electric and repurposing a hull. Kudos!
Next we need some motorised steering and throttle control. And then an autopilot.
dude words can not express how much i love your videos. Its like my mind, in a channel. Its dope
the black thing with the button is just a reverse polarity/anti charge protection for jumping vehicles so that you dont cause a fire hooking it up backwards or if the vehicle starts and then begins charging the battery.
You can just break it open and bypass it, nothing special. Maybe consider a ~70a fuse on it
"...looking much prettier. Well, less ugly. Well.. it's red." I'm dead LOL
Great job 👍
Just my .02 worth, The drywall toggle bolts will eventually eat a hole through your fiberglass if you dont put a backing plate that is tougher than those metal wings. Dont lose your solar panels! Best wishes, love your video and it answered a few questions for me for future projects. Keep up the great work of saving things from the dump.
great cheap fun!
MOAR POWAAAAARRRR! 😀
I love your projects! Most gangster geek entertainment on youtube, keep it up!
Oh my god. These videos keep getting crazier and crazier. A real sense of freedom coming out of this, in a sense of a man being capable of creating everything with almost nothing. Truly a reappropriation of technology and science by the people. Similar feeling to Kevin Mitnick. Very inspiring dude!
Im thinking of this exact thing and been doing for months. 😅 gonna start my build this winter stay tuned.
It's done. On my channel now there is a presentation and demonstration of the build 😊 thank you for the inspiration!
That is a very impressive battery. Need to see if DIY Solar with Will Prowse or Hobotech have put it through the paces.
Now I want to get my hands on a cheep boat to do quirky stuff in
There are usually a few cheap/free boats on Craigslist / FB Marketplace, usually in the spring when people are cleaning up, or in the fall after the boating season. If you can get one with a trailer, that's always a plus! Usually need at least *some* repairs and cleaning, but that's part of the fun :-)
If you gut the relay board out of the jumper cable plug end, wire it directly it wont cut out.
Man.. this has become my favorite channel here!
I find these electric motors fun and practical on short ranges. I've been gliding around the lake using one. They are also comfortably silent.
I've had 1 issue with the ergonomics of the steering/control rod. It consistently remains at an awkward angle, positioned behind my back, leading to discomfort while trying to manage and steer on a little bit longer distances.
Your boat seems to have a greater distance between the motor and the sitting position. Compared to my experience using these on a standard rowboat, where the control rod passes right by your armpit when you're sitting right next to the motor.
I grew up driving outboards, so I actually prefer the tiller steering! This one has the weird foot pedal (which I'm using as a hand pedal since the cable isn't long enough). I could probably modify this to a steering wheel pretty easily, but the pedal works for now.
Worked out great!
Oh so that's what solar sails look like! 🌞
Super awesome project! Well done and I can't wait to see what's next!
Really nice drone shots!
Yes, most impressive of all your follies! As for steering controllability how about locking trolling motor in place and adding a tiller paddle behind it for steering? I think it would provide you less drastic directional responses than turning the trolling motor.
Best DIY Channel on UA-cam. Love you
Man that is awesome, works so well. Well done.
This channel is so underrated its unreal
Another beauty, keep it up. Really look forward to these vids.
That type of connector is called EC5, you can buy one and solder it directly or modify the one you have for jumpstarter, just bypass the relay inside the black box
I bought an EC5 and it's not quite the same, there's a hidden 3rd pin (probably to engage the relay). I'll have to fool around with it some more.
Nice one
Beautiful quiet boat.
This is awesome!
Struth, if you could buy a kit to build something like this, with BYO DIY as much as you like, it would be smashing.
Open source, community project, anyone?
To quote a great dad of science........" this is awesome "
I spoke to the milk crate manufacturer, they were OK with your use case
im sure with not a lot of hackery you could get that jump start lead to be a permanent on adaptor, that lead probably shuts the connection when the alternator spins up and starts charging. all that shouldnt be needed for your less than 20 amps your pulling. great video would love to see a part 2!
Reminds me of the "Trashboat" episode on Regular Show.
for better steering, you probably need to insert an center board into the slit in the cockpit. Looks similar to the type of boat called Laser and since you are not racing or sailing for that matter, you can probably insert a water treated plywood about a meter long and that shoudl give you quite good stability in going straight and turning.
A kooky suggestion would be to run the motor up through the daggerboard slot, perhaps widening the base of the thruhull space so you can raise the prop high enough to not damage it on the trailer/shore. Then you could steer with your feet while facing forward with the overall boat staying more horizontal. Though cleaning prop of vegetation might be a difficult task.
I'm here for the building and for the jokes.... "Nor the maker of these milks crates." So great!!!
save it for parts
ha ha ha
I'm gonna use that one
great channel
outstanding success lol great vid
Freaking awesome!!
Life preserver
He in search of One Eye Willy's ship ! Hey You Guyyyyysssss!!
Ha, wait until you see what I have coming up soon! 🏴☠️
@@saveitforparts Cheers ! :D
Rough roads in Minnesota!?! Hard to believe given the fact that the national infrastructure is stronger than ever
You have finally created an infinite range fishing boat!
Outstanding work 😁.... Even if you're not an R/C guy, you would still likely dig RC Test Flight on YT . The dude is a legend amongst us interdisciplinary tinkerers 😅😊.
"so now that we've got this old sail boat looking prettier... well less ugly... well its red" earned a sub at this point :D
Thanks! It's amazing what a couple rattle-cans will do for an old junky vehicle 😂
You should use some of those boats as microwave dishes. 😂
Put a potato cannon on that craft and you'll have a navy. Together with your potato cannon tank you'll be ready to conquer the world!
Just kinda slowly...
Next up 4 battery packs and twin trolling motors.
make an adapter for the booster output with the same connector (might be xt type). you want a nice fuse in there...quick and easy and you'll make this in no time :D
oh, I saw the thumbnail and thought this was Daniel Riley's video on his solar boat from his rctestflight channel, lol
go trolling plz! catch and cook on the deck, omg I want a solar scip.
Nice to hit one out of the park on the first swing (sportsball analogy, sorry)
Well done, there is a major problem here that your shadow on panel will stop the charging..
Awesome
Freedom units!
This guy is dope!
11:48 nyeeeeooooooo drift king!
Awesome build 😊, life jackets are better worn though... 😉 Stay safe
Drop a board in the keel slot, might make it go straighter.
great video
i believe the output from your battery uses an XT90 connector, if you built a custom cable you wouldn't have to hit the boost button.
also this looks very similar to RCFlightTest's boat, the only difference is he has built anautopilot and custom motor/props.
