We're in NY and are required to turn in grades, but we do things the same as you. We correct as we go, repeat lessons as needed, and strive for 100% before moving on. This makes grading very easy. We also are not required to use a number grade, so for many subjects I just use Excellent, Good, or Improving based on my own knowledge of how they're comprehending the material.
I am enjoying this series! I'm not a beginner homeschooler, but I think It's great to see what others do. I have gotten many great ideas from you that I use in my home. Thank you for creating such useful content!
So thankful to have found this video. I homeschooled before and graded. It was built into the curriculum I used and I assumed I had to do it. I am now homeschooling my younger two and using TGATB and was panicked that no grading or tests were involved. Now seeing this it totally makes sense. Thank you for taking your time to help us all.
I grade as in proficient or needs to work on more, not actually letter grades since my state doesn't require those. (Thank you Jesus indeed!). We use BJU for English (parent-led), but if we continue using it for high school then we may use the distance learning option. Your videos are always helpful, thank you so much for sharing your insight with us!
For high school, will you also have a goal of 100% correct answers and thus all grades on the transcripts will be A+s? I grade the same way as you for elementary, so I wonder how to do it for high school and what will be seen as realistic for college acceptance etc.?
I live in Michigan and we aren’t required to keep grades either which I’m so thankful for. This is exactly how it “grade” which means I don’t grade and I always get weird looks from people when I explain that. I don’t give tests either unless there is some benefit to it being a timed test. And the reason is, tests were created to figure out what each student has mastery of and what they need to work on. I’m teaching them side by side every day so I know exactly what they need to work on and what they have mastered💜
This brings back sad memories as a mama to a child (now 25) struggled in her Christian school. Homeschool kids were made fun of in our church, I didn't even think to pull her out! She would do terrible on tests and things and the teacher would just move on!! My poor daughter was lost! I could cry now thinking about it! She tried so hard! I would reteach her at home but the teachers continued to move on to the next chapter and she never understood the previous! I wish I could have a do over with her but I can't and I had to give it to God that I did what I knew at the time. Thankful for moms like you who are now encouraging me to help my littlest ones now! ❤ Bless you!
This video was so helpful as a new homeschooling mom!!!! I love all your homeschool videos we are working on the botany science unit because of you, my daughter loves it too!!!
Great explanation! This is my first year homeschooling, and I've gone back and forth on whether or not to correct them as they go because that is what I feel is the "right" thing to do. I do try hard to have them write in their journals without telling them how to spell things so they try sounding things out, but when they are done, I show them the correct way.
That’s a good way to look at it because I was like how am I supposed to grade my kid if everything he is doing is good because we don’t move on if he doesn’t understand it. Luckily for me I live in a state that does require it either.
Yes! We don’t grade either in elementary and middle because my kids must correct all wrong answers. They need to learn from their mistakes so they need to get 100%, whether that’s the first time through or the third!
This is how we have always done it as well. Learning the concepts is the key, not putting a number on that learning. It is not a requirement for my state. I too have a highschooler and do grade, but again myself or my husband works with her until it is 100%, so her "grades" reflect that.
I do this too with my younger ones! However when they get older (like middle school) I start to grade some things more traditionally (although not everything...some things I still do exactly like you do). Both of my big kids have college aspirations and I don't want them dependent on me proofreading and checking behind them all the time because that's not how it will be in college. Especially for my one kiddo who tends to be a little lazy.....😉
I live in New York and my 3 kids just started Homeschool and we required to submit a Quarterly Report that includes Grade or Written Evaluation. and payment $250 each quarter
Hey, I hope your family had a wonderful Easter. We use TGTB, also. I love knowing where my children are in their academics, too. It helps me to pinpoint their weakness in that subject. Where I live, we are requires to have the end of the year evaluations...ours is super relaxed, so I'm very thankful for that. When it comes to my kids' work it's all about quality, not quantity. Retaining information is so important. I've been considering BJU for Spanish for my soon to be 8th grader....however, I laugh when I think about choosing that course from BJU because I remember your daughter noticing the outdated outfits and setting in the Spanish videos. I can totally see my 8th grader getting distracted with that☺️.
Woohoo, 😅 I started watching this video thinking “oh no I don’t grade their work we correct as we go” (mine are aged 7 & 9) so phew! Thinking I’m on the right track then 😀 thanks for the video
I love your videos! You seem so energetic! How do you stay energized throughout the day and not be so distracted with your distractions during school and stay focused?
The only grading we do is spelling (if you want to call it a grade) and assessments like with TGTB LA unit assessments...as well as math (TT) has a quiz every like 7 lessons or so. Totally agree with everything you said here--this is exactly what we do as we have elementary age kids only. We do have to submit assessments/grades to our county reviewer 2x a year for each child so I keep the assessments to suffice them only. But we, like you, also already know how they're doing and grade them as they go throughout their work so there's not a lot of wrong answers. Will you have your oldest stick with TT for math when she's in high school?
I agree with you that grading is needed in a school setting because a teacher needs to know how a large number of students are grasping concepts. I grade from 9th grade and up because our state requires it. Otherwise, I wouldn't do it at all!
I know you have done a lot of organizing videos, but how do you organize your group family curriculum? Example history. Also why did you stop doing science as a family?
Will you be tracking grades for them to use as high school transcripts? I’m in Michigan so we don’t have to report anything either, but I did read that high school grades can be used as transcripts. Wondering if that would be useful at all.
And now I just got to the part of your video that mentions high school grading and transcripts 🤣🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️ don’t mind me. It’s fine. I’m fine. lol
Did you have a chance to watch the video? In it I said, I do NOT grade until high school because I am not interested in anything less than everything correct.
would it be ok to ask what state you live in I think that's great and yes t y Jesus for that I been going through at home schooling with my son but wanting to change to home schooling I'm so up with it and it's so much I been hoping to get the help in all ways I been watching you and? I think your beautiful t y for your help for all I'm in need of help ok t y hope to hear from you God bless
My kids’ take Jiu Jitsu classes and the instructor is HUGE on grades. 🤣 I give him a notecard every 9 weeks with their “grades”. Literally don’t grade a thing ever. 👍🏼

Thank you for this, super helpful and I've been treating "grading" like this already, so it was nice to hear that another mom does this too!
We choose not to grade, but yes, expect mastery in elementary school. Thankful we live in an easy-to-homeschool state! Praying it stays that way!!! 💜

I love the freedom in my state too. thanks for the video

Great video. Thank you for sharing! It helps me out a lot. ❤️
This is exactly how I've been "grading" the last 10 years, but our state doesn't require anything either. 🦋
Can you share the program you use for schooling, thank you
Oh my gosh, LOVE the striped shirt!
Same here
We also redo lessons if they don't fully understand. We use Math U see for maths and just started Good and the beautiful English ❣️
Very helpful video! Thank you! Will you be doing TG&TB History for all 4 years of High School or just 2 years? How will you grade that?
I love your videos! You seem so energetic! How do you stay energized throughout the day and not be so distracted with your distractions during school and stay focused?
I just keep my priorities straight the best I can.

We do the same thing, recently my kids have asked about getting grades. Not sure if I will change it up at all.
What state are you in ? Iam in SC just curious on the grading because my son is going into high school next year. Homeschooling.
I agree with you that grading is needed in a school setting because a teacher needs to know how a large number of students are grasping concepts. I grade from 9th grade and up because our state requires it. Otherwise, I wouldn't do it at all!
Same. Exactly the same.
I know you have done a lot of organizing videos, but how do you organize your group family curriculum? Example history. Also why did you stop doing science as a family?
We "grade" the same way. We use the same math. I require a 90% or better.
Just so I understand, on the grades that you do record, are they just letter grades or number and letter both? Ex: 95 = A
I follow their grading rubric they include for the high school courses
Will you be tracking grades for them to use as high school transcripts? I’m in Michigan so we don’t have to report anything either, but I did read that high school grades can be used as transcripts. Wondering if that would be useful at all.

For the good and the beautiful how do you grade?
Did you have a chance to watch the video? In it I said, I do NOT grade until high school because I am not interested in anything less than everything correct.
@@GraceandGrit My mistake. I thought your daughter was doing high school LA with the Good and The Beautiful.
According to their website, The Good and Beautiful LA high school curriculum comes with a grading system to follow.
@@Mtripp27 oh ok I did not know that. Thank you

I don’t share that publicly. I’m sorry. Thankyou for watching!
