- Steve Gorman, former drummer of The Black Crowes, has since moved on, but after the death of keyboardist Eddie Harsch he felt compelled to review the history of the band through his book Hard to Handle: The Life and Death of the Black Crowes--A Memoir.
The book served as therapy for the former member in a way as the writing process spawned a 900-page meticulous account of every moment in the bands history. After relenting to some edits from the publisher Gorman set his account of the bands tumultuous history out into the world. In the book, there are not just endless tails of strife, the pages are also filled with unbelievable moments that the band shared with rock legends Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and many more.
Gorman is currently an on-air personality for Bay Area rock station 107.7 The Bone and also plays drums in the ground Trigger Hippy.
Steve is the real deal. A very down to earth chap. The only right drummer for B.C. It's never been the same for B.C without him

Get the audio book. It's 13 hours and 37 minutes so, I suspect it's the unedited version. It doesn't take that long to read 345 pages which, is what the book is.

Steve Gorman is such a cool and down-to-earth guy. Props to him for telling his side of the story and the life he lived in The Black Crowes.
Southern Harmony.....what a great album, this band was sooo good live around early 90s, pure Rawk n Roll class.
When Marc Ford and Ed joined the band they became amazing. When they left the band they went downhill.
Never fails to amaze each time....some high class music...My morning song being my fave track of this album.
Amazing....in a rock era where grunge was the norm, these guys, not even in their 30's, played this high standard music with backing choir....always had my respect from when I was a 15 year old grungerock loving freak...

One of the underrated greats out there. Never known for his chops, but as with Porcaro they were there, and he knew how to use 'em in service to the groove.
The only drummer that truly nailed John Bonham. At the Greek was dead on.

9/15/90. I was there!
As a drummer I've always appreciated Steve's style. He always has a really sweet groove and I've never hear him overplay. But listening to this he reached Idol status @ 29.02 "I just wanted to be in a band where I could fire the singer."
I'll be picking up the book today.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Steve start on drums later in life? When he hooked up with the Robinson brothers he had very little experience on the kit.

Hi Mr. P, Steve has a radio show up the road from me in Gray, TN ON 101.5 WQUT Anyway last night he shared a story about the one and only time he got high on killer weed and then went out and played he said everything to him was real real slow like a LP on the wrong speed So to compensate he started playing twice as fast and he said the guys kept turning around saying WTF? slow down. He emphasized it was the first and only time he did that. IMO Steve is a spellbinding storyteller he has the ability to describe situations in incredible detail and in chronological order,

What is the most disappointing thing about the Black Crowes' story is that the band could not make the music they made AND rise above the old, destructive rock 'n roll clichés. The music is one thing, the immaturity is something else.

I started working at Tower Records & Video on Sunset Blvd. the week their second album came out. Chris and Rich walked in and they were the first rock stars I ever met. Chris was obviously baked and he bought Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory. He was like, "You ever seen this!? It's amazing!" I told him, "It's one of my favorite movies of all time!" I got his autograph... such a cool memory to have.
Steve Gorman is so well spoken. That eulogy for Harsch... his piece of the puzzle settled into place and it can't be changed... wow.

I saw the BC several times, but in Orlando, I was in line waiting to get in and Ed walked right by our line. I nodded and said hey Ed, he smiled, said hello, and kept walking. No one around that I saw seemed to know who he was. I think he enjoyed that and I didn't want to bring any unwanted attention to him

@@FridayWeekend No. But he doesn't varnish over the bad stuff, and sometimes, the stories he tells show the brothers behaving in a negative way. He is very respectful, and it's undeniable that he still carries great love for everyone in the band. It's written in a very fair and honest way.

Like the fact , and I’ve heard Chris dog it , they didn’t care for By Your Side . I love that record start to finish . I’ll always remember being in the Marines when it came out , SoCal . Kicking my heart , welcome to goodtimes , virtue and vice .. that album is up there with southern and shake .

Yes, "By your Side" was a return to the band's earlier and best form.
The lyrics were weak, which dogged BC albums from Amorica on.

I love that Ed was the catalyst. The Ed stories were some of my favorite parts of the book.

@@fooddood it is one of my greatest life's regrets that I did not stop him to tell him how much I loved his work in NYC on 9/21/01. He passed me on the street on the way to the Beacon Theatre show. It was only 10 days after 9/11 and the city was empty. We were the only two people on the street but he seemed like he was in a rush so I didn't want to disturb him.

My band was managed by the Crowes manager, Pete Angelus, and got to meet Steve and the band a few times. Steve and Johnny were the most down to earth. Never got to talk to Rich very much or Ed because Ed was this phenomenal piano. Kind of kept to himself. At least that’s what I saw, and Chris was pretty cool but a little bit aloof. Great band especially the original lineup. I have a vinyl copy of Southern Harmony, signed by all of the members to me and my brother, who is now passed away. My brother was the drummer in the band and used to pick Steve’s brain for hours in the studio. The good old days. Long live Steve Gorman fantastic Drummer fantastic human.

I was at one of those Roseland Page and Crows shows in ‘99……one of my personal favorite shows of all time.
Black Crowes is one of my favourite rock bands, along with Led Zeppelin and Soundgarden....I love the stories but dont think any less about each person because of their addiction or being an arse....they made great music and as in Dutch we say; high trees will catch a load of wind....;)
Seen The Black Crows on there first tour in Mpls. @ First Ave. Great show and all i kept thinking is The Faces and Rod Stewart. I was instantly a fan!
Great interview! What a drummer. Been seeing them live since '93 and Gorman is one big reason the band is so successful. He was the anchor.
His sense of humor that I have seen from him as in VH1's behind the music episode of them led me to the same conclusion.
U will always be my favorite band!!

Great book. Too short. Got to see the Crowes once. September of 09' in Nashville. Luther Dickinson and Rich on guitars. Damn good show. They blew the roof off the Ryman...
I have been a die hard fan of these guys since the beginning, just downloaded the book. I have to finish another, but I'm really looking forward to this. Saw them play at the Hardrock in Vegas in the mid 90's, Great Show!!! Steve says 91-97 was peak Crowes. But the Before the Frost/Luther Dickenson stuff is pretty epic!!!

Read the book. Good read. The Robinson brothers have to be two of the most difficult people to work with in the music industry..
As Steve said: anyone who has ever worked with the Robinson’s all say they will never do it again…

He nailed it on the head that the brothers would reunite after the book with a common enemy. Would love to see Steve back in the band tho. IMO he is just as important as Chris and Rich.

Absolutely incredible. That was HANDS DOWN the best Crowes interview I've ever seen/heard.... and I've pretty much seen them all. My first show was them opening for ZZ Top at the Omni in Atlanta... that historic night where they got "booted" off the tour... After that I saw them 43 more times (44 total including the Omni/ZZ show). I have tons of Crowes vinyl (all OG), a shitload of collectibles/cds/posters/artwork/etc from the band... met them multiple times, photos, all that shit. I spent 22 years as a FM radio DJ and even with all of that, I cannot imagine myself doing a better interview with Steve than this. Nice work, host. I'm sorry I don't know your name, but I don't see it in the description.

If there’s any unsung band member who IS the band, it’s Gorman with the BC’s…NOT the arrogant brothers who cheated the other members out of their rightful $. Listen to Gorman with the BC’s & Jimmy Page at The Greek. He puts on a clinic.

That's because he actually is. He's a genius of the highest order. If you play hard rock, he is the benchmark . Nobody has equalled the diversity and power of Zeppelin

I was a backstage hand at great woods Mansfield mass when the crows played with Kravitz I turned around and you guys were standing there I said oh excuse me and have a good show and shook your hands Steve you gave me a hug and then Chris looked at me said yeah all right and turned his back to me Rich apologised profusely but I told you guys that I shouldn't have even said anything to you and you said no no if you're a fan you can talk to us just ignore him.

Ive met the guys a few times. Chris was always great but Rich was a jerk. I gave him a pass the first time thinking we all have bad days but he was the exact same the 2nd time.

The Crowe’s are my Stones .. bought Shake on cd when I was 12 . Love the band and everything they’ve done . Reading the book , great book , I’m sadden bout the constant in fighting that fueled the journey .

I gotta read this book
The band still to me is underrated and should no doubt be in Rock n Roll Hall of Fame . Even the lesser lighted records have just amazing songs . Miracle to Me on Lions , Good Friday on Snakes . Lost tracks like Tornado and Peace Anyway . They had the ability to change your life 4 minutes at a time .
There are MANY bands that aren't in the RRHOF that undoubtedly deserve it MUCH more than some that are in.
The crowes, grand funk, soundgarden, Chris Cornell as a solo artist, I can definitely keep going listing great ROCK bands that aren't in the HOF.
Yet Madonna is there. Yes, I know she's very successful but definitely not RR. Apparently, being a rock and roll act doesn't matter as Brenda Lee is there and she was country. The spice girls and Paula Abdul will be in there soon to keep Janet Jackson company.
I'm all for having a HOF, but it shouldn't be called the rock and roll HOF, when quite a few inductees are clearly not even close to RR.
Steve`s book contains what I have always called the good stuff the real stuff behind the curtain behind the camera stuff Man, that`s really where all the cool stuff goes down. EAP

Steve Gorman rocks based out of Minneapolis on the great 92 KQ RS but heard on a lot of other stations around America.
Sure to like nights with Alice Cooper a lot of other stars and musicians who basically have spun out into radio some are just strictly on one station but thanks to syndication their programs are heard all over Nikki sixx is another one.

I Love the band, but that gig was disappointing. Sorry. Warpaint does not work for me, and the gig was a phone in. Next gig at Wollongong was much better.
