Interesting considering how much Nelson beats on the drum of "don't just make pawn moves": In the fourth game, he started with 5 pawn moves. In the fifth game, he started with 7 pawn moves. Not saying he made bad moves. Obviously, he didn't. But it does highlight that learning the principles is only the first step. The next step is learning when to break them.
Alessia Santeramo always say that breaking conventional rules is only a weakness if the opponent can exploit them. But for us non-masters, following conventional rules will probably work out for the best.
I once managed to capture my opponents knight pushing a lot of pawns in the beginning. The feeling was great, but then I had a lot of pawns scattered all over the board and did not know how to protect them. I lost that game. So I usually never push more then 2-3 pawns in the start.
Well, most of nelsons' early pawn moves came with tempo or fought for center control. It's the early flank pawn moves that have no purpose that he criticized.
I really appreciate this series, as there are not a lot of speedruns out there with this level of explanation and detail for us a little lower rated players. Thank you 🙏🙂
@@FlapjackMcGee It is funny how I found out. I was playing with random people, when suddenly someone told me that he knows me from somewhere. Then, he wrote down to check Chess Vibes on UA-cam because I played with Average Joe. I was thinking it was a joke, but no. That's how I found this channel.
One thing is for sure, you are by far the best chess teacher I've seen yet on UA-cam. It's a thrill to just watch and listen to your commentary. I also like your clear plans and direct and logic piece play. You remind me of Morphy or Capablanca in a way.
As a 500 elo player, sometimes I wonder where these players are who play random pawn moves when im playing haha 😅. I feel like Im playing against the most advanced players sometimes even at my level..Always love your videos nelson, I've learnt a lot from your channel, so thank you :)
Hey i just want to say thank you for your instructive videos. I'm new to chess. I've known the rules for years, but I've always been very weak at this game. Could lose to the kid etc. Anyway, I started watching your ELO climb, I watched until your 900ish level. Your videos gave me the courage to actually play chess with the real ppl, not just bots! I've played 7 games so far. Not many, i know, but its a real challenge to me. HR usually at 120 bpm! I lost most of them. My pride is that at these games maybe I was in defence usually, and had a counter attack here and there. But I never was crushed by my opponent! Usually it was a fight till the last pawn standing. ELO around 700. When i checked my opponents accounts, they had 2500+ games played. This means that after watching maybe 10 hrs of your videos, being a total newb I was able to cause trouble to some players which play this game for years. And my accuracy was around 80%. :)
The importance of tempo! 44:50 I was waiting for White to do a Stanford on you. That's why the White queen was sitting there apparently passive and out of the game. At the same time, the queen-rook box is one of my favorite patterns for shepherding opponent's king around and I often try for that two-rank or two-file separation between them to make that possible.
The engine doesn't recognise a persons intention until it becomes obvious. This is why I believe it awards excellent and brilliant moves based on how many "mistakes/errors" you make up to a move you make that puts you into a winning position
Another very instructive video , on first watch ( will rewatch ) seems like folk have openings they like , but flexibility isn't really there ? Well above my current rating range , but still good insight into how people play albeit against a chess master ! Thanks again Nelson
Players who sign up for a 10 minute rapid game and then bust out all their moves like they're playing a 3 minute blitz game are very fun to play against.
Hello Nelson. I wanna thank you for your great work I have been watching your videos and this is the most educating channel on chess. It is really interesting and I love the how long the videos are as they can be watched as a movie :) Thank you for what you are doing you are great!! P.S Could you play the Nakhmanson Gambit In one of your videos if you get the chance? its an alternative to fried liver attack
I was trying to keep up with AverageJoe's rating to see how long before he reaches me. I was 1426 last week, so I thought "I still have time". I'm 1399 today 😭 it was an awful week.
This is my elo and watching this series I feel like I try to go for too many cheesy moves where I'm expecting them to blunder. I should instead play for better overall position tbh
15:37 I know a gambit against b6! Put both pawns in the center, then after bishop b7 you go bishop g5, if he takes the pawn on e4 you go d5 to lock out the bishop from its b7 square. It’s a real gambit, no idea if it’s any good.
Hey Nelson, a question: do you play any games on the account apart from the count shown here? Because the count is pretty different: Apart from the 5 games played in this video and the ones played before the first player in the series (NoodlesMark), there are 138 games showing on the site. If you discount the loss at ~1000 (the one vs FedorZador) and the two cheaters, the win count should be 135.
If you sack the Bishop into the h pawn, then Queen to H4, add to the king's back start moving knight for the checkmate. What can stop it even with the extra move to getting it into position?
It's sad to see all those intermediate players playing too fast. If you don't want to think for a minute or 2 on a move just play blitz. Nothing wrong with that! A lot of those players would probably cause some trouble for Nelson if they would do that. I hope we start seeing a difference around 1600-1700!
Nelson, In the last game (at 1:05:50) I believe black's position could have been saved with bishop E5. It makes luft for the King, blocks the file and is supported by the Queen and the Knight. Am I wrong???
I wish some games he would play fast early and spend more time mid and/or late. Cause a lot of times he gets to bullet mode seems to magic a checkmate out of a hat…
I think Nelson was getting tired - looking for attack options while ignoring the opposing queen and knight. He usually would spot not being able to take the knight because of a potential queen check. Time to take a nap Mike. :)
On the last game when the opponent moved his queen not recognizing the check mate, what if he played knight to e5 blocking the checkmate with 2 defenders covering? Would that be a good move? Obviously he lost when he paired against Nelson 😂
There is a fun gambit going against chess principles: as black 1. e4, f5 2. exf5, King f7 And then white tries to mate you quickly but you can develop super fast instead
Game 4 46:27 white went with the reti opening. It's the start of the ICBM gambit, and it's also a tricky opening that can transpose into a few different openings, depending on your familiarity. It took me from 400 to 800 in bullet and blitz. I highly recommend it at those levels. much fun

@@r33th Flank pawn move had the purpose to stop the knight from jumping in, but yes it was a bit too passive.
