  • Thermal Mass vs. Geothermal climate battery... no question that both is better. Baby steps however is how you acieve your goals. I dug this greenhouse by hand and hand mixed the foundation. One step at a time . Add layers as you go.
At 3Canyons Permaculture farm - Oppenheimer Ranch Project
we have designed our own revolutionary greenhouses that utilize passive and active solar technology via what some call the “climate battery”-a subterranean air-circulation system that takes the hot, moist, ambient air from the greenhouse during the day, stores it in the soil, and discharges it at night-that can offer tropical and Mediterranean climates at similarly high altitudes and in cold climates (and everywhere else). BOOM!

That galve tub on the bottom line it with garden pond liner membrane. Maybe double line it. Fit a small water pump with the inlet tube in the bottom tub continuously pumping in to top tub with overflows splilling in to every tub beheath creating a cascading effect back to the bottom to oxygenate the water to keep fishes/plants happy. You could have a spawning pool tub ect. Happy fishing. You may need sepetate top up tub with a a seperate pump with the float switch probably fitted in the top tub to keep it running though. Just a thought. ATB.Doing this will loose the thermal heat quicker though. But could be diverted down a wall/grid with fan blowing across it as a primitive form of A/C in summer to cool also.

That's a BOOM! Sweet system working on many levels. Adding lighting will extend the season for greens. Otherwise, growth will stop in November. Using unheated hoophouses and planting in September our crops were basically in cold storage, just picked and sold until February. We are retired organic commercial growers in Northeast Arizona between 5 and 6000 ft elevation. You're way ahead of the curve Kudos man.

The thing that I love about gardening is that there is not just one right way of doing things, but lots of ways that you can pick and choose from so you get the way that is right for you. Prayers to you and your family.

Good to know about thermal mass.when my zone 7a drops to a 5, a few hundred gallons of water will bring me back up to an 8. Also considering using a compost tumbler for added heat to a water tank ( wrap garden hose through a composting pile also works) Thanks, Diamond!

Firestone makes pond liners whatever size. 45 mil EPDM - rubber will last 25 years outside, much longer when not in direct sunlight I would imagine. Garden stores, ebay etc. Can come across them used as well. fish Koi /carp are easy. As for koi they go dormant at 55 degrees. maybe tilapia or something.

Diamond, at your latitude, you don't need any north wall in your greenhouse - just a soil berm. I suggest you check the guy in Nebraska here on UA-cam who grows citrus in his greenhouse and uses the buried plastic pipes to heat/cool the greenhouse. He will have fish in his pond inside to provide fertilizer...there may be an optimum minimum size greenhouse....yours looks small....a larger one may be more efficient.

If you heat stones, it does the same thing. Stones have a low thermal conductivity. Once warm they stay warm for a while. Water is conductive.
Change the pots to clay-based. pottery. Then you can put the fish in them.
I liked thermo dynamics in college.

That 100 feet of pipe underground is that in linear footage of ditch or can a person put in a 50 foot or a 25 foot ditch and place it the corresponding 100 feet of piping. Excellent setup! The water (climate) battery setup has been what I have been planning on setting up using black or grey metal drums..

Diamond. I know your a busy chap an all. But Have you seen "The Great Global Warming Scandle-full Documentary"? If not it's definitely worth a watch. Also what do you think of Rolf Witzsche work? His last vid was "50 Years Ice Age Boundary Zones" very interesting views on where he thinks mankind is going re Climate Change in the near future. You'll understand his previous work/vids more than me as they're quite in- depth, but very good.
    ATB from the UK.
    PS
Save a plot for me. I'll show you how to grow the stinky stuff. E.g. Lesson 1,2,3: When flowing stage arrives cut all sun leaves in half as they don't need them as much as all plants energy goes in to the reproductive flowing cycle/buds. Plus frees up more space. They need to start wilting going yellow for the chlorophyll to change. Get a magnifying glass and look for the wilting capipulated stalk glands to start curling for a better end result, then it's chopping time . A few weeks prior to chopping time leach soil with water/flush through with water that's few weeks before harvesting also to get the sweet taste/nutrients flushed out and remove and replace an inch or so of top soil to remove salt build up, then no more feed water only. Higher phospherous feed at the start of flowing cycle and boom. F in ell i'm dragging ths sht up from my memories a few decades ago. Can't say too much as I live in the uk.
Love to all. Keep safe my man.
You all know i'm talking about how to grow the tomato banana plant here don't you. Save me a fat one. Thanks.

I wonder how sand would do as a thermal mass? Im up in MN and im a bit worried about the water due to my no-till system ill be putting in my greenhouse. Was thinking of putting about 1800-3000gal of sand in a black tarp in the middle of the 25'x15' green house with a line of hot air from the roof running through the middle of it to help it warm up and cool down. any thoughts on water vs sand? also maybe coiling the tubes pulling air underneath the sand pile to maximize its surface area?

How does this system work in colder temperatures? You need to grow year round. I kind of envision a lower stratus for colder months where you reflect light. Woodstoves could help.
Grow more squashes. 'Can' your produce. I like cattle corn because you can store it. Probably not tasty but when the belly hurt, it suffices. The grains have importance. Carrots can remain in grown till needed.
I think of 2 Kings 6:25. And sorry, but dung may be a possible remedy for parch times. I will not consume human flesh, I assure you. What is death to you unless you consider it? But I would think great spicing would be needed. "Hungry" is when you do NOT know your next meal will be. Food sources need to provide nutrient, not taste.

With that size greenhouse I would've gone at least 4" on the output as it looks like there's a 4" on the intake, but it's all good bro, I can't wait to see how your winter goes, I wish I could be there. Also I saw an interesting design the other day while researching...it's called "Greenhouse in the Snow". Kirsten Dirksen posted a video titled "Nebraska retiree uses earths's heat to grow oranges in snow" at this link ua-cam.com/video/ZD_3_gsgsnk/v-deo.html. His house is huge and uses 6" tubing at 8' depth stretching about 85' from the greenhouse, the results are amazing what you can grow in the snow, I love that guy.
p.s. I commend your choice on the indica as I'm pretty partial to the purple, at our age we can use all the medicine we can get in the for of pain relief. Ok thanks again Diamond Dave, git 'R' done.
