This is what makes Wanda one of the most terrifying characters in the marvel universe as a whole. It’s not that she’s a bad person, she’s not, it’s that she’s got an insane level of power of the very fabric of reality and has suffered so much physical and emotional trauma that she’s no longer mentally stable. She can literally rewrite reality to suit her purposes and doesn’t have the wherewithal to know whether what she’s doing is right or wrong.

Wandavision is a very complex story. Every bit of your analysis is right on. There is no one way to classify Wanda's character and that is what, I feel, was the writers intention. The best characters and stories are complex and do not fit neatly into a category or box.

i think wanda is a good example of what happens when a generally “good” character doesn’t have the proper life lessons or support system to help them make the “right” choices in morally complicated situations.
like not only was she raised in unsafe situations, but she has continuously so far depended on a singular person for all of her emotional support. without that person she feels completely alone.
it’s not an ideal situation for someone to be in so i think it’s nice to show the nuances of that a bit, because there are a lot of people in the real world who behave “badly” for similar reasons and may benefit more from a supportive approach than from a combative one.

    • @reactswithjax

The inclusion of Quicksilver, not from the MCU but from the X-Men movies, was a brilliant stroke of metawriting that put the audience in the exact same position as Wanda, bargaining with herself, one of the stages of grief. Knowing that this isn't exactly her brother, not knowing why, but strongly motivated to believe it is (because the fandom was thinking they were getting the alternate universe story they had been eagerly awaiting, but not sure about). Hats off to the writing team and to whoever came up with this concept.

I remember years ago, in the comics, a number of big brains from the comics; Stark, Dr Strange, Proffessor X etc. getting together and having a very serious conversation about whether Wanda Maximoff is simply too powerful to live and if they should do something about it. Like, it's nothing personal but she is ridiculously dangerous and not exactly the most emotionally stable person in the world so there were quiet talks about whether they should find a way to put a bullet in the back of her head before something dramatic like this happens.
Pretty cold blooded but, in their defence, when Wanda eventually does do something like this in the comics, it's on a MUCH larger scale than in Wandavision... like, global.

@@reactswithjax Yeah, I just talked to someone today that talked about having training that could save someone's life, but being in a terrifying position of having to face some deep personal trauma if she had to. She luckily didn't, but it's the kind of subject Marvel brings up sometimes. It's possible that sacrificing mental and emotional stability to save others might not necessarily be the right thing to do, because it's "choosing" to harm oneself, basically because they're externally pressured to.

I found it interesting how much you fixed on Wanda's mind control -- which is not an inconsiderable aspect to focus on. Personally, I sort of focused on Hayward's "Take the shot." What? Take the freakin' what? At this point, I view Hayward as...if not the villain, then certainly an antagonist. He's controlling, especially with the "non-compliant" women we've seen him interact with. The way he presented Wanda in the situation room makes it seem like he has his own agenda for whatever reason.

As others have said, not only was it huge that they used the actor from the X-men series, it was also massive because Disney got the right to start using X-men in MCU which is massive game changer to future movies/tv shows by Disney. A similar thing occurred years back when Sony allowed Disney to use Spiderman (hence previous movies had different actors). So this was a huge thing and broke the internet for a while.

It’s always easy to be on the outside of someone’s grief looking in and make judgments on how they should or shouldn’t handle something. I remember going through a horribly traumatic experience and grieving the loss of someone I thought I would grow old with. Never felt like anyone understood me until I watched WandaVision, hear me clearly when I say I would have done ANYTHING to be with them again. I relate to Wanda so much it’s scary. To me, it seems like the way the show presents it is as she initially did it unconsciously and then it kind of spiraled from there, at first she didn't know she was doing it, later she started to figure it out on some level but wanted to keep pretending things were okay, and we'll see what direction that goes from here. In the comics she's always been highly unstable and can be one of the most powerful forces for good or can really mess things up when she's not in control of herself (which is a massive understatement, as those who know the comic storylines are well aware).

    • @LaerteSatan
      @LaerteSatan 2 місяці тому +3

@@grimdeathkidI think it's more complicated than that. It's not about the size of our pain or the justifiable meanings to consider "excuses' to validade grief. It's about that for each individual grief works different and complex everytime.
Wanda doesn't know about her full extent of her powers yet and also the pain can make you not rationalize very clearly, love isn't about logic. She is not a villain or a hero, she is the representative of the human condition inside a super powered character in that reality. Can you imagine how could she feels to think that could do anything in her power to make things right? Bring back loved ones and realities to confort zone? If a common ordinary human being can do terrible things for not be able to change things and feel powerless, imagine what pain can do to someone who can actually change reality itself? Create llife. Wouldn't you at least consider trying? It's relatable and Wanda is really the most human of all the Marvel characters so far in my opinion. Like I was trying to say, she is the real representation of human condition in a world of superhumans.
When I lost something inside me, I said terrible things and did awful stuff to people and mostly to myself. I thought I've lost myself. Today I can see it more clearly but back then took me years to realize and grief takes time, for a lot of people sometimes takes decades to heal and others never heals at all.
So for me seeing people judging Wanda and trying to classify her like in Black or white point if view is pointless. She is dangerous yes, but I forgive her because I know when she is probably not forgiving herself for a lot of stuff too. I don't know man this Scarlet Witch character means a lot to me and can easily be a role model for lots of people despite every differences and situations.
She could also rip Thanos apart if she knew the potential of her full power too and wouldn't need to sacrifice Vision to save the universe. She acts by impulsiveness and emotional connection, unlike Doctor Strange and Wong being by discipline and control.
Love can be altruistic but also destructive.
Sorry for the long comment haha I really love to talk about my favorite characters and themes of those universes and the messages transmitted through. ❤

We need to look at Wanda's personal time line. First we have Age of Ultron, when Pietro died. Then we had Civil War, which couldn't have been much later as she was still being trained. Not much time to process Pietro's death.
Then she went on the lam with Vision in Infinity War, at the end of which Vision died. After that she was snapped out of existence.
After that she reappears during Endgame. Note how confusing it was for Monica and no sense of time having passed.
This series was stated as starting less than a week after the Blip returned everyone, so from Wanda's POV, she's lost her brother, then lost her lover, and now it's a week after that. She's a mess.

The actor playing the "recast" Pietro is the same one who played Pietro in the X-Men films. This got a lot of people SO hyped because it looked like the X-Men movies were finally crossing over with the MCU. Until 2019, the X-Men franchise was owned by Twentieth Century Fox, which prevented the X-Men from officially showing up in the MCU and meeting the Avengers.
Wanda and Pietro's appearance in the MCU was a special case. In the comics, they're both mutants, which meant that they fell under the umbrella of X-Men characters owned by Fox. So in order for them to appear in the MCU, the origins of their powers had to change, and they could never be called by their mutant names Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. Meanwhile, the X-Men series introduced their own version of Pietro/Quicksilver in X-Men: Days of Future Past.
But Disney bought Marvel Studios in 2012 and then bought Fox in 2019, so they now own both and can do anything they want with the X-Men, including integrating them into the MCU.

At this point in the series, yes - everything seemed to be pointing at Wanda as the "villain," but many of us watching still weren't entirely convinced. Fans with more knowledge of the Marvel comic universe still believed there was another antagonist - seen or unseen - pulling Wanda's strings. Heck, at this point, Hayward seemed like he could be the antagonist responsible for everything that was going on. Only continuing to watch would we receive the answers we craved!

Fun fact about the commercials, the hairdo on the woman is the hairdo Wanda was wearing in the comics through the decades, and the actress in those commercials sort of resembles Wanda in the comics (especially the 70's one). As for the Astrophysicist you were racking your brain over trying to remember if you knew anyone, so did the rest of the world when this was mentioned. This show was watercooler show personified. Wanda and Pietro's parentage is pretty mixed up in the comics. One version they are the children of Magneto (in Xmen Universe). Since XMen and MCU aren't mixed in movie-land (because of different production company rights), they can play both versions this way.

    • @carlgibson285
      @carlgibson285 2 місяці тому

They solved Wanda and Pietro's's parentage in the comics by revealing that the twins weren't really mutants and weren't related to Magneto, they were actually ordinary human babies who were experimented on by the High Evolutionary and were raised by Magneto who believed they were his children. It caused a bit of a stink at the time and comic fans hated it, but Marvel felt the need to retcon their origin because they couldn't use mutants in the MCU, and even though they now have the X-Men rights back, Wanda and Pietro's origin is still that they were never Magneto's kids.

My sympathies were still with Wanda at this point: I understood the magnitude of the harm she was doing, but I took this to be a mostly (not entirely) involuntary result of severe trauma, like someone lashing out as part of PTSD. I took the scene-with-an-accent to be evidence of a compartmentalized personality, where one part of her knows what’s going on & another doesn’t. Between Monica & Hayward, I always trusted Monica more. The use of Evan Peters as Pietro utterly confused me. As to your proposed compromise . . . stay tuned.

Wanda becoming the villain, i was sure that was it wasn't completely her fault.
But she wasn't really hiding her feelings and trying to hold it together.
Paul Bettany as Vision really shows more and more layers as much as in Infinity War.
I imagined that he would not find out why things were so different till the end.
Monica Rambeau slowly and surely becoming her comic counterpart was getting cool.
S.W.O.R.D. (the team leader anyway) is just agents and soldiers compared to Wanda.
No way they were a match, weather she was grieving or not.
Going into the 1980s inside Westview did bring back memories.
That was my era,The Cosby Show, Family Ties, Full House (Liz Olsen's twin sisters of course).
