For those who started watching WandaVision and were VERY confused by what was happening… don’t worry, we were all there with you! In today’s video, we’ll be clearing up any confusion and going through all the homages and easter eggs the show has to famous sitcoms from throughout the decades!
We have LOVED watching Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bethany perform in the style of so many recognizable shows that made TV history what it is today. From performances to sets - the WandaVision team when all out to bring out the best of TV history in the new Marvel hit. The series started off with tributes to some of the earliest tv shows, like “I Love Lucy” and “I Dream of Jeannie”. The 70’s brought all kinds of laughs and quirks with shows like “The Brady Bunch,” which gets a lot of direct nods in WandaVision.
Then when it was time to visit the 80’s, the show brought in some of Elizabeth Olsen’s personal history with reference to the hit series “Full House” - one of the very first shows she ever appeared in!
The show swung into the 90’s and gave the kids lots of fun tropes to work with, reminiscent of those used in Malcolm in the Middle. Once we arrived in the present day, the references didn’t stop and we found ourselves humming along with the theme song the same way we hum along with the one for the show “The Office.” How many references did you catch?

The way they perfectly nailed the Dunphy house look for the Modern Family episode is amazing.

I just love how the show’s name works on so many levels:
1. The show is about Wanda and Vision, obviously: Wanda & Vision.
2. Wanda is married to Vision and she took his last name, since Vision is a mono-name, her last name became Vision: Wanda Vision.
3. Television shows are “televised visual programs”, hence this living sitcom created by Wanda is: Wandavision.
4. The show is set in a dream world of Wanda, so it’s her “vision” realized: Wanda’s vision.

Before I was familiar with MCU, and marvel overall, I always thought that the title is actually Wanda's Vision :D And intepreted it the way you explained it in your comment

WandaVision is sad and deep in so many levels. A lot of neglected children in the past used TV sitcom as their foster family. A child whose parents were never home, or whose parents fight and bickering all the time, for examples. Say what you want about Bill Cosby, but watching the Cosby Show as a child made me feel the warmth of a family that I couldn't find at home.
As a Gen Xer, latchkey kid, who grew up in crack era Brooklyn, watched AIDs happen, and Reganomics, I agree with you 💯
so true - growing up in the 70s, I watched sitcom reruns in the afternoons when I was home alone and I'm sure my mom, who also came from a so-called broken family and had an enormous amount of stress in her life, also used them to cope.

Elizabeth Olson is such an Amazing actress. She got the tone and pacing perfect, and even the inflection in her voice was just like the era of the sitcoms they were doing. Like she was channeling Laura Petrie and Samantha from Bewitched and Mrs. Dunphy. It wasn't just a different set, but her whole characterization changed and the way she spoke and moved. She must have studied those sitcoms. I know she studied at several different acting schools and acting troupes. I think that those varying methods have allowed her to cover so many acting styles flawlessly.

Ok i just realized something. Yes the intros are incredibly similar to the shows the pay homage to, but there is one difference that may not be noticeable at first but once you see all of the WandaVison intros together, you will notice that if the OG intro includes a shape, (which most of them do), the WandaVison version replaces the OG shape with a hexagon. And guess what the name of the anomaly they’re in is nicknamed, thats right the HEX just like the shape HEXagon that is in most of the WandaVison intros. That is a very small and interesting detail or Easter egg that I thought was cool they included and is only noticeable if you watch all the intros together. But yeah MIND BLOWN 🤯

The beginning of the 80s episode was of Family Ties. You literally even showed images from Family Ties but still called it Full House. Even the set of that episode, esp. the kitchen was mostly like Family Ties.

I'm not American and I'm born in the late 90's so I did not know any of these shows to recognize the references. While I have seen videos highlighting them, I didn't know how far they had gone to get it right down to a T. Seeing these videos makes me appreciate the show so much more than just for it's plot, character arcs, costumes, performances, special effects and the pace. It actually blows my mind how the set remains the same but still somehow looks like the set of so many TV shows. And to think that even all this is part of the plot: Wanda put in all these details herself because that's what she picked up when she watched these shows as a child, and then later with Vision, the two truly happy phases of her life.
In my opinion, this show is a pinnacle of Marvel's work.

WandaVision really was a cultural reset in terms of original concepts in live action hero filmography which will influence a generation and is a timeless work because it has so much longevity like IM SHOCKED and sad that they made this a limited series

The '80s intro was more Family Ties than Full House.
Yup. As a sitcom junkie and youth of the 80s, I thought 80s intro was mainly Family Ties, and then the running in the park and picnic at the end, Full House.
Yes, I'd say mostly Growing Pains (especially the aging up photos and theme song) and Family Ties (painting the family portrait), with a bit of Full House added in (family picnic scene).
Full House, Growimg Pains, Family Ties, Roseanne all used the "aging up" in the opening credits. Something kinda nostaligic and familiar about it... makes the character's actually feel like family. Or like you are watfhing a real family.
I remember feeling nostalgic watching "older" episodes of 'Married With Children' because Bud and Kelly looked SO DIFFERENT in the opening credits/ depending on the season. Same with Whos the Boss. The late 80s to early 90s seemed like suge a HUGE step in aesthetics.

Well-Family Ties mixed with Growing Pains mixed with Full House. I think it was evenly split between these three shows, and I’m amazed that it was all so seamless.
There were far more nods to Bewitched than to I Dream of Jeannie. A very telling point was that Agnes/Agatha lived in the Bewitched house, though the set of Wanda's home was straight out of Bewitched, as were her hairstyle and costumes. Also The Dick Van Dyke show figured far more prominently than I Love Lucy. The sets were dressed very like the Dick Van Dyke Show house.
I agree that Episode 2 was much more Bewitched than Jeannie. As for Episode 1, it was much more Dick Van Dyke in terms of the set however the zany comedy was somewhat based on Lucy with a bit of Bewitched thrown in there. Agnes played an Ethel Mertz-type role in Episodes 1 and 2 (given that in Bewitched there is no "best friend" character that I can recall).

In Bewitched there was no best friend, but there was a nosy neighbor, and a wacky aunt who sometimes came to "help". Agnes was a combo of the two.
You shouldn't be surprised that Kathryn Kahn was good at recreating the modern sitcom glance since she was a character in Parks and Recreation

I just finished watching this last night and all I can say is WOW. My mind is still blown after a good night's sleep.
But can we just appreciate how nicely agatha and agnes’ role was played!!
The dinner scene in the 1st ep where Vision’s boss starts choking and his wife doesn’t realize it, comes from The Twilight Zone with the background music to support it. The Twilight Zone may not b a sitcom, but it is an element for that scene.
The picture sequence showing them age from childhood to adult hood in the 80s episode, I don’t remember that ever being part of full house. However they did do it on family ties as well as growing pains. Also important to note the opening bit with the family portrait is being painted by a paintbrush, that is the iconic opening of family ties. Also the interior of their house in the 80s is reminiscent of the Torkelsons (which I think might’ve been the 90s, but it would’ve been 90s early) as well as full house and a few others.

The opening of episode 7 is actually an almost shot-for-shot reference of the short-lived sitcom "Happy Endings"
Somehow, Agnes made me remember The Nanny in that episode where she tries to calm the babies down.
And 4 years from The Nanny, we kinda have the rip off/parody of Fran Drescher: Janice Litman Goralnik nee Housenstein

For the part about Full House, the song along with the photos also gave me a strong "Growing Pains" vibe. Would have been nice to mention it as well as I'm pretty sure that's what they were going for.

@@gloriaaportillo No, no, the Growing Pains reference was huge. The drawing to portrait was Family Ties and the picnic shots were Full House, but the photos of each cast member at different stages of their life, of them each “growing up,” followed by a shot of them on the show, was specifically Growing Pains. Even the song they came up felt extremely similar to the Growing Pains theme song. The song did also sound similar to the Family Ties song (both themes have in common a a man and woman singing), but the little electric guitar lick was pure Growing Pains.
I don't think it had anything to do with Full House at all.
The growth photos for the intro in episode 5 are a reference to Growing Pains, and the painting is a reference to Family Ties. So it covered Full House, Growing Pains, and Family Ties.
I felt the Malcolm in the Middle episode was also a homage to Disney shows of the time, not Gilmore Girls.
I got the GG vibe, the town square in Westview had the same vibe as the town square in Star's Hollow, both from the iconic gazebo but also from the whole town getting together in the square to celebrate (just like in GG). I never lived in a small town so this concept is foreign to me and my only reference point was how the town in Gilmore Girls had an event almost every episode.

@@ryanholmquist8268 You know I thought the same thing and went to IMDB and saw the Disney Ranch as the location for that shoot. Apparently, some of the town was CGI (Gazebo too apparently). It could have been cool to see Luke's in the background though...

On first watch, my wife instantly recognized the homage to Gilmore Girls in the town square Halloween show. I had seen a little of the show but wouldn’t have recognized this detail. I haven’t seen anyone mention that similarity until now - good catch.

@@ryanholmquist8268 It actually is not the same place. GG was filmed on the WB backlot but WandaVision was filmed at Disney's Golden Oak Ranch an hour outside of Los Angeles.
While it does give GG Harvest Festival vibes, that was not the showrunners intention. It was just a sitcom Halloween episode. GG was not one of the shows they referenced.

@@ryanholmquist8268 I thought the exact same thing when I first watched it. Gilmore Girls is still one of my favorite shows and when I see a gazebo, I see Stars Hallow & I see Kirk doing something strange in front of it 🤗. But it seemed strange that they would reference GG since it's not a sitcom. I finally found an article from the showrunners that mentioned the filming locations for the show & found out about the Ranch. Aside from pretty much every Disney movie I watched as a child, there are several shows that used both locations for filming, like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Office (Schrute Farms!) which it why it looks so familiar.
How could you ignore the absolute PERFECT recreation of the Stevens' dining room and look into the kitchen from Bewitched. I cried it was so beautifully done.

Anyways i do agree with what you said. Not everyone has latched themselves onto wanda vision the way some people have. Still others might not have been alive for that time period where the shows that are being referenced were on.
One of the things I noticed that I haven't seen others talk about is when they switched to the 2000's they say there was dead air on the broadcast. But thats when television stopped sending analog signals and went digital.
3:44... To my recollection, Michael Gross was in Family Ties, not Full House!? And the drawings are referencing Family Ties too.
As introverted as Elizabeth Olsen seems, she is so good around fans and so kind too. I love seeing her on screen.

You forgot to mention the Dick Van Dyke "tripping over the ottoman" gag. ua-cam.com/video/RL1t2MLrkgU/v-deo.html Vision almost trips over the ottoman in the opening to the WandaVision first episode, but then catches himself by phasing through the ottoman instead. In later seasons, Dick Van Dyke would also catch himself just before tripping. Priceless.

Gilmore Girls wasn’t an inspiration for the aughts-based episode. The town set they used (for the majority of episodes, not just for the Halloween scenes) is a part of the WB back lot in Burbank. It only came off as more obvious in this episode due to the use of color and the prominence of the gazebo. The WB back lot - the town square and other buildings and streets surrounding it - is used by many, many other series and movies. Gilmore Girls only happened to make the most extensive use of the town square. An example of another popular show shot there is Friends, specifically in scenes that take place on the street outside of Central Perk. If you pay close attention to shots (in both GG and WV, iirc) in which the narrow street with taller buildings is visible, you should be able to see where Friends was filmed.
They actually shot the series on Golden Oak Ranch since it's disney owned property. WB isn't letting the mouse on their shooting lots and they aren't forking the money over to them either, lbr. They added the gazebo into the set, likely as a nod to Gilmore Girls and other series shot on the WB lot.
The cameras used were amazing the stills look exactly from each respective era. the 90s-2000s was really cool to see because everything was spot on. loveddd the cinematography

I wasn’t born in the same era of all of the shows, but I knew what they were while watching, because my parents showed me almost every t.v show.
The shuttered opening in between kitchen and living/dining area in episode 1 were exactly like the Dick van Dyke show. It really took me back. Great job.
i love that they also used the exact same kitchen as modern family. when I was watching wandavision on my computer (and modern family was playing on my TV across from me) I about had a stroke! lmao, I had to do a double take!

While the opening of the 3rd episode is an obvious homage to the Brady Bunch, the title splitting in different colors from top to bottom of the screen is based on the opening of the Mary Tyler Moore show. Another Dick Van Dyke connection!
While the animation of the 2nd episode opening is based on Bewitched, the music is based more on I Dream of Jeannie. The chord progressions and the change of tonal center in the middle third are spot on for Jeannie.
Those end credits you showed in the video are the standard disney+ end credits. They're the same across all Marvel shows as well as The Mandalorian and Book of Boba Fett.

At 3:45 there is one slight mistake when talking about the Full House Cover. Michael Gross was not in Full House but was instead in Family Ties. It was just a slight error but wondered if anyone else noticed. I know it was referenced later but just wanted to clear that slight thing up. Great video comparison though. 🙂

As a German, I really appreciate this video because I didn’t grow up on these shows and it lets me appreciate the references more :)
I’ve always loved her but this show really brought out her emotions, and as an actress & model..... it’s HAAARRRDDDD showing that vulnerable side To directors, your agent and some people you just met Like 5 minutes prior to that scene being shot. I loved seeing that side of her though, (They always type-cast her as a happy go lucky boho-chic rich girl) especially w/ episode 9. I really resonated with a lot of memories from her past. And that really brings us viewers to understand & feel that pain she’s going through.
Especially when she first enters Westview. When she arrives to Vision & Her forever “Home”, where They were to “grow old”together. (I don’t cry a lot... but everything in this scene-is so on point with how I’ve felt lately & That anger she lets out is 💯 relatable.
(Especially after she sees Vision at S.W.O.R.D- with all his wires cut/taken apart💔 😭 ) pulling up to their house, slowly walking and absorbing everything all at once. It’s hard to accept after all the pain and loss she’s already been through. I could feel her pain, anger, regrets & things she wanted to do in the future but couldn’t bc The people and family she loved, who she wanted to be a part of her life-just gone. I’d LOOVVVEEEE a season 2... but then again, season one was soo perfect and the concept was one of the best I’ve seen since the movie-turned-show “what we do in the shadows”. It’s Like They would be either going in circles starting from the 50’s to present day again, or just have it be in 2021, doing similar episodes to modern family, The Simpsons, South Park, American horror story, comedy stand up specials

Wanda is so relatable I am obsessed with sitcoms. I watched Full House, Superstore, Mr Iglecias, Great News, Fuller House, Modern Family and all one of sitcoms on Netflix

The modern era was an absolute favorite! (Along with every other decade, let’s be honest). The camera side-eyes and confession cams were so hilarious.

That "full house" homage was not Full House... it was Family Ties.
It was mostly inspired by the Family Ties intro but it had a little Full House in there too with the picnic and running scenes

The only part of episode 5 that acknowledged Full House was the running in the park and picnic. The rest of the intro was a blend of Family Ties and Growing Pains, which were two extremely popular shows in the 80’s.
I love this series, and the sitcoms it references so much, my favourite episodes being 1 and 2! So thank you for educating me on the later episodes, because I've never really been a fan of more modern humor and shows!
So I gotta comment on this, why did you reference I love lucy when talking about the shift to color? Because Bewitched is a show that actually did switch to color during it's tenure, Lucy was never filmed in color and the colorized episodes of I Love Lucy were a much later phenomenon, the only one to be colorized during the period was the Christmas special which Desi Arnaz hated and so really didn't see much light.
Kathryn Hahn was in Parks and Recreation, which was also a mockumentary. So hell yeah she did it perfectly.
You're missing a lot of references here. The 80s era episode was heavily influenced by Growing Pains as well (Bohner). The 60s era episode was influenced more by Bewitched than I Dream of Jeannie.
I dream of Jeanie/Bewitched, Malcolm in the Middle, and Modern Family are the ones I guessed when watching the series this past week. (I'm late, I know)
Though I was also thinking the Patty Duke show, Jetsons, Brooklyn99, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
