There is nothing mysterious there. I work at a bioinformatics company and already in the first half of 2020 (I forget the exact date) a biologist there told me she examined the covid genotype and discovered very quickly bits of the sequences of the AIDS virus (she is an AIDS virus expert so they leapt to her eye), not in the sense that it's anything AIDS-related, only that bits of that virus, not connected to AIDS itself, were used. Probably because AIDS has been very well studied and small snippets of its sequence are available in labs. Anyway, the probability of this sort of thing occurring naturally is FAPP zero.

Scientifically you can't definitively dispell any hypothesis as to where this came from, because we may honestly never know. A potential inadvertent laboratory leak could have merit, especially given the amount of secrecy about SARS-CoV-2 in China.

A smallpox lab leak would be a minor story that lasted a month or two in the media and was never heard of again. There's a reason it was completely eradicated from humans over 40 years ago in the 1970s - it's not an easily spread disease, it produces grotesque and obvious physical malady in everyone who gets it, it isn't infectious in the prodromal phase, and it's trivially easy to contain with vaccines that are near 100% effective.

They tried to direct everyone's attention away from the lab leak theory because they didn't want to be restricted in their gain of function research and lose funding. Scientists are supposed to stay apolitical, narrowing in on the truth at all times. Many from that sector of academia did not do that and instead they tried to protect their grant money. I am sure they justified it in their own minds, convincing themselves that the good gained from gain of function research outweighed the risks, but in reality they only undermined the credibility of their field.

From the point of public health it is very dangerous to "conclude" one way or another and would be much wiser to take both the lab leak and the wet market points of transmission seriously. Asymptomatic transmission has always been a major concern and it's probably the #1 reason why COVID spread much further and faster than SARS ever did. If you read any early patients reports, there would be husband and wife who both got COVID, husband is near-death in ICU, and wife tested positive but is doing fine at home.

This kind of insertion doesn't occur in natural mutation and is totally unique among coronavirus strains. And, by chance that polybasic furin site is exactly what was previously known to cause increased infectivity in human cells, and thus what the 'gain of function' research was all about. The natural mutation in this PRRA is also why the delta strain is more infective than alpha strain. Scientists were reporting on this back in May 2020 even while it was being reported as 'fake news.' Delta may have emerged naturally in the human population (it's a single nucleotide "typo") but it's just as possible to have been intentionally or accidently released from a lab.

BTW, insertions do occur naturally. Fx a recombination in a host infected with multiple viruses (strains or even distinct species). However, this particular insertion is only likely to be selected (survive) in a host with ACE2, furin such as humans or ferrets (or mice with humanized lung cells) in a lab. There is zero evidence of prior evolution in the human population. And SARS2 does not easily infect bats (yet it's obviously a bat CoV backbone). Thus ONLY lab origin is probable.

There is nothing mysterious there. I work at a bioinformatics company and already in the first half of 2020 (I forget the exact date) a biologist there told me she examined the covid genotype and discovered very quickly bits of the sequences of the AIDS virus (she is an AIDS virus expert so they leapt to her eye), not in the sense that it's anything AIDS-related, only that bits of that virus, not connected to AIDS itself, were used. Probably because AIDS has been very well studied and small snippets of its sequence are available in labs. Anyway, the probability of this sort of thing occurring naturally is FAPP zero.
Bingo. I'm no virologist or epidemiologist or anything like that I just study and have an intuitive sense for knowing bs when I see it. I listen to one the top researchers who said that this was not natural but man-made, this was early on in the first few months. But yet he was suppressed, now it is all coming out and people are wakening more and more. Thankfully truth and freedom will win out in the end.

Just look at the Lancet letter to see how easy it is for virologists to control the narrative in a direction they want.

Scientifically you can't definitively dispell any hypothesis as to where this came from, because we may honestly never know. A potential inadvertent laboratory leak could have merit, especially given the amount of secrecy about SARS-CoV-2 in China.
Either way, lab leak or wet market, the PRC was negligent and could have taken steps to prevent this pandemic... which they didn't do.

For me the lightbulb moment was when I discovered the Wuhan Institute for Virology was situated in Wuhan.

Investigated and manipulated in gain of function research at WIV where a furin cleavage site was added to make it more infectious. Shi zhengli has published work with WIV detailing how bat coronavirus’ are manipulated and made more infectious to humans. Lab worker gets sick(with pneumonia like illness) and it escapes.

A smallpox lab leak would be a minor story that lasted a month or two in the media and was never heard of again. There's a reason it was completely eradicated from humans over 40 years ago in the 1970s - it's not an easily spread disease, it produces grotesque and obvious physical malady in everyone who gets it, it isn't infectious in the prodromal phase, and it's trivially easy to contain with vaccines that are near 100% effective.

@@JustTayo - I expect politicians to lie, but what really disappointed me was the virology community. They tried to direct everyone's attention away from the lab leak theory because they didn't want to be restricted in their gain of function research and lose funding. Scientists are supposed to stay apolitical, narrowing in on the truth at all times. Many from that sector of academia did not do that and instead they tried to protect their grant money. I am sure they justified it in their own minds, convincing themselves that the good gained from gain of function research outweighed the risks, but in reality they only undermined the credibility of their field.

From the point of public health it is very dangerous to "conclude" one way or another and would be much wiser to take both the lab leak and the wet market points of transmission seriously. To find out who is responsible for all our years of fun due to the pandemic, yes, it would be nice to know exactly how this happened. Either way, lab leak or wet market, China was negligent in preventing the origin and the initial spread. The negligence is ongoing as well given the secrecy from China.

Spain and especially Italy also have Chinese sweatshops and initially had fairly open travel policies. Most evidence points to an origen in PDR China. Regardless, going forward, we can conclude that "gain of function" research is perilous and should cease.

it is well adapted to humans, i have been meeting with my cousin and her child since 2007 at our cottage 3-4 times per year every year and every time I see them they have a cold, I have never had a cold in over 30yrs even though close proximity to people with colds even sleeping in the same tiny cottage, Since covid, they have not had a single cold, odd, then my cousin got the vax her kid not, and her allergies got worse to the point she almost OD'ed on antihistamine, I have been at home alone since Sept and the only person to see me was my Mother and Brother a week ago to pick up a recalled dehumidifier, I also handed my brother a box full of dishes for his daughter and that box hand over was the closest I got to him and my Mother I gave a quick side hug in the kitchen next door as we own both houses but I live in this one and they never entered this one and I went back next door the next day, Exactly 7 days layer I felt the first sign of a cold in my left nostril, but the next day it had moved to both and my lungs. They were both vaccinated with all their shots so how did I get it so fast and so easily? They have no signs of any cold. They literally created asymptomatic carriers with the vax from my experience,

Asymptomatic transmission has always been a major concern and it's probably the #1 reason why COVID spread much further and faster than SARS ever did.
If you read any early patients reports, there would be husband and wife who both got COVID, husband is near-death in ICU, and wife tested positive but is doing fine at home.
