The series, OG and almost every one at least till Arc V has writers seemingly forget this is just holograms. Like remember how they keep getting damaged by holograms even outside of shadow games or how characters sometimes act as if special summoning mechanics without proper knowledge are dangerous? As if monsters can turn on you or take over your mind or something.
If I had a penny for everytime Jonouchi lost because of literally a physical KO I would have two pennies, which isn't much but it's weird it happened twice

Mai technically won using the seal of Orichalcos twice. First against Pegasus, and then in her second duel against Joey in the waking dragons arc, but she's not the only one. Gurimo at the start of the arc did win against Weevil and Rex with that card, even if we didn't see the duel on screen. Valon used the seal of Orichalcos to defeat many prisoners when he was being recruited by Dartz. Rafael possibly used the seal to defeat Mai, even though we don't actually see who played the card in their duel. Even Dartz technically won against Seto Kaiba using the seal of Orichalcos, even though he ultimately lost to Atem.
So that’s two duels Joey lost just because he physically couldn’t continue, well that I don’t know if he would have had the heart to take out Mai like that even if he had a 100% guarantee that she would be fine later. Gotta say, I like how that fits his character, but at the same time it feels like such a cop out reason to give him a loss. He didn’t lose because he was outplayed. He lost because the poor guy took a beating. Saying this for some reason reminded that in Arc V Action Duels, it is technically legal to physically attack your opponents, so that might actually be a format Tristan could win since he could just nab all of the action cards before he gets out played. I wanna see that now. I wanna see Joey and Tristan have an action duel that just devolves into a friendly brawl between the two of that’s just something that they do. It goes from Arc V+ era tactics to just an old school slug fest for just some silly reason only two best friends would fight over.

I have seen videos of people statistically ranking the Yu-Gi-Oh! characters in terms of wins and losses, and the villains almost always end up very low on the list, as they play very few onscreen duels - sometimes just the final one against the protagonist - and inevitably lose.

Joey was exhausted after a long and physically abusive duel from Valon just prior. He had the snot beat out of him and still won. Less than a few minutes later Mai insists on dueling him. Joey doesn't go in it to win. He goes into it to prove to Mai that her friends never forgot about her.
Iirc didnt he duel Mai to a draw, *then* had the duel with Valon, *then* this duel with Mai he DNFed? Dude's shadow game stamina was running on fumes by the time this duel even started. At one point we see what he sees and he was seeing quadruple.
Actually joey insists on dueling during this duel he asked to duel her because he knew that was the only way to get through to her and really wanted to get back her old self back to normal.

Though it goes to show how well the cards power was presented that people took it seriously even though it’s users kept losing. It’s easily the most prominent field spell card in all of yugioh. It’s the only field spell to have a dedicated archetype.
