The Pool Players.
Seven at the Golden Shovel.
We real cool. We
Left school. We
Lurk late. We
Strike straight. We
Sing sin. We
Thin gin. We
Jazz June. We
Die soon.

I love how in the intro she talks about how she wishes people knew her other poems, and then at the end she says she’s gonna read 3 more, but the video cuts off before she does.
Yeah, it's pretty ironic
When I was in high school I got to hear Ms. Brooks recite this
She came to my high school too. Sweet awesome lady.
@@dymndwolfprime537 Ya'll are so freaking lucky. Damn, that must have been awesome.
Jealous!!!! You lucky duck. That must have been quite an honor!
WOW! The way she syncopates it is AMAZING! Like a jazz verse.
I know Miss Brooks since I was a little boy at Jenner Elementary in the 90s and she was an amazing woman!!!!! Rest In Peace Gwendolyn Brooks!!!!!
FYI This recording of "We Real Cool" was made on May 3, 1983, as part of the Academy of American Poets reading series, held at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City
This is my favorite poem ever! Simple yet compelling. It helped guide my entire life. Im 41 as of yr24 Thank you Gwendolyn Brooks❤❤❤
I memorized this poem for a school project when I was 12. I'm now 32 and I still can recite this poem. Only after watching this video is my mind blown.
My poetry teacher taught us this poem for Golden Shovels and it really resonated with me to be honest. The way she reads it and her personality makes it what it deserves to be.
Excellent to have this still available. Who knew it was banned before!!! LOL She IS Real Cool.
That jazz stuff is evil I tell ya!
Ah! The way she reads it, with the stresses in places I didn’t expect it, is VERY Cool!! ❤😀

So short yet so powerful!!!
I was once one of those kids at the pool hall, now I see them and wonder. This poem is relatable on all levels. Very nice!

Such a beautiful poem! Could anybody write down the speech please? I'm Italian and there are some words I can't understand, thank you very much!

thank you very much!
Interesting how Jazz apparently used to be a reference to jizz similarly to how rocking meant f*cking & how the word funk probably evolved somehow from f*ck. All music comes from the hornies.
A beautiful poem
braaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
It's cool to be cool.. just not others use your cool .

Hi, thanks for putting this video up. If you are going to list the poem, please put it in the order that the author intended. Line breaks and prosody are such important attributes to this poem. Please do not do it a disservice.
I actually did put the text as it was originally written. The coded text will not allow for the exact line breaks.
School in June?
As a southern hemisphere person I say, yes
When I was in HS we didn't get out for summer till mid to late June, depending on how many snow days we had. That's Massachusetts.
But actually, they skip school so it's a moot point. They are listening to jazz, which was the cool radical music of the day. In Germany under Hitler you could land in the concentration camp if you were caught listening to jazz.
Sup
Can people actually interpret what she is saying????
I hate this poem
Luxe Honey fuck u
We don’t care
