Did the tenor just shift from a B4 to a C#5 in his last note And the bass descends to A2 Just because the tenor climbed up to hit the C#5 it turned the minor into a major chord What a great arrangement
The arrangements in barbershop are amazing. When I first came over from classical/opera it was like musical culture shock. Tenor and lead singing off the treble and bari and bass off the bass clef. The first chart I was handed showed the leads going to B5 and tenors to C5. I was lead and I sang in full voice out of habit and not knowing it was supposed to be falsetto. Everyone stopped and just stared at me 😂 Anyway the dissonance at the top was resolved by the two lower parts. It’s easy music, but can be messed up if you don’t watch dynamics.
@@fezzik7619 Not just the dynamics but the tuning of the chords. The baritone in particular must tune to a 64th of a tone to make the chords ring. I was singing barbershop 46 years ago when The Barbershop Harmony Society was still going by the moniker "The Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Singing in America".
@@fezzik7619 As for falsetto, if you are in a chorus, then yes that note would need to be falsetto. However, in a quartet, if you have a real contra tenor, if you can sing full voice, that is what you do. Years ago I was lucky enough to be in a quartet with three other crooners. That was something. All 4 of us were powerful singers with many years of experience, so even when crooning the resultant notes were there. Quite something
I saw this performance live. Absolutely astounding. Also, they are singing through their accents as they are Swedish so it may be why the vowels are not as shaped as you might prefer, but was clearly deliberately chosen to be like that too, to get their vowels to match and ring as a group.
Ringmasters are so, so good in this recording, but in person they were so unbelievably AMAZING that I couldn't even applaud after they sang this. I just sat in mute amazement!
I had the opportunity to sing tags with 3 of the members (the bass was back home in Sweden) a number of years ago when they swung by my chorus' rehearsal and it's still one of my fondest memories in music. So special to have even shared that short 30 seconds with them.
I got to see this performance dead center of the venue in Nashville. And it was the craziest thing we had heard at the time, especially for barbershop. Incredible. Long long long standing ovation for it. Those Swedes, man. They're just amazingly insane at singing in general lol
@@GamingPianist7 I know! Even with training and trying to remember every technique in the book it's just a LOT to do, to say nothing of stage presence, performance, possible nerves. Peak of the craft, really.
Guys, in Barbershop an 18 second note is far from unusual. I have seen 30 second notes. Breath control and BIG lungs are required. By the way, the part after the false ending is called a Tag. It is very normal for the lead, most of the time, to have to hold that note while the other 3 parts rotate around and into the final resolve. If you listen VERY carefully with really good headphones you will hear that note get tuned and retuned as the chords move. That is what keeps the chords alive and what will give the resultant notes way up in the Gods. Unfortunately the angels singing does not get picked up be mics.
Realtime was partially Canadian not all of them were born outside of the United States but ringmaster were technically the first outside quartet to win international followed by musical island Boys 2014 champions

Tara, Thank you, I've waited a long time to see you react to this and was not disappointed.. What might blow your mind (after all the compliments on the vowel production) is that English is their second or third language. They are from Stockholm Sweden!

I am not kidding I have listen to this about 300 times so far. At the very end of the song he adds that extremely high note and it always amazes me how beautifully they are in sync on that final 20 second note.
That last high note was from the tenor on the far right. The second to last note ( penultimate ) was a B then the resolution to a D flat. That penultimate note created a lot of tension in the chords until he changed to the D flat. Sitting in the audience I didnt know what was more amazing, the fake ending ( tag ), or the actual ending.

Ever since i started watching Tara's videos (and signing up for Singsmarter) I have been suggesting this with every video she posts. Its a well deserved reaction. Barbershoppers can learn a lot from her instruction.
The last time I cheered and laughed and punched the air in appreciation after a vocal performance was for Anthony Warlow's long note in Phantom of the Opera on stage. So in terms of female barbershop, two all-female quartets actually placed in top 10 in I believe, 2022? They are astounding and absolutely worth a listen. GQ and The Ladies, I believe.
Very glad to see this! Ringmasters are from Sweden and won the International Quartet Championship of the Barbershop Harmony Society. As a barbershop quartet nerd myself, this is much appreciated, indeed. 👍 (P.S. If you're wanting to hear a Female Barbershop Quartet, I recommend LoveNotes.)
Hey Tara. I sing in the female barbershop group (which Ringmasters is the male part of)... the organization is called Sweet Adelines and it's all around the world, mainly in USA. I'm sure there's a Chorous near you who'd love you to sing with them weekly! I'm in the Greater Auckland Chorous in New Zealand. I counted to 24 for his note. Maybe I counted a little fast as was so happy! 😂
Wish you talked more about why it was "ridonkulous." I like hearing other people talking about it because I've been showing it to people and explaining why it's awesome for 2+ years.
I sing baritone in barbershop. I prefer it over lead any day. I do love Harmony as well!! Check out Harmony Inc or Sweet Adelines International, and Barbershop Harmony Society, which is the organization Ringmasters is part of, just allowed women to join the organization as well as full fledge members, which also allows them to compete! For female quartets, check out GQ. They're the first quartet that got me into barbershop!
Tenor, lead, baritone, bass are the barbershop designations. Lead tends to get most of the melody, but as you can see in this arrangement not always. When a singer holds a fermatta at the end in barbershop it’s called “posting”. There was a lot of specific terminology I had to learn when I came from the classical/opera world to sing barbershop. It’s a lot of fun
Pausing myself at 7:50 - that moment is, I think, the first time I've ever heard a true "fifth note". Usually I don't hear it - or don't notice it - and this moment blew me away. I could distinctly hear the four notes from each singer, _and_ the fifth note all coming together. I've listened to this song many many times and that false tag always gets me.
@@rayk998 I am hearing the "fifth" note or fifth voice - the virtual note created by all four voices coming together. As I understand it, an "overtone" is when a singer makes two separate notes simultaneously, with the overtone being a high falsetto or whistle.
Yesyesyesyesyes! ^_^ Thank you so much for doing this review Tara-! I'll take this as an early christmas present :) As some have said, there are female chapters like the Sweet Adelines you can check out i fyou want to join. Nothing like being in the room for performances like these- spine tingles for days... Merry Christmas! Edit: Spelling
Like I told Bruddah Sam, welcome to the rabbit hole that is barbershop! If you think that hearing it in an ambient setting was awesome, try listening to it again with headphones. You will hear nuances in those chords (overtones, undertones, etc.) that seem impossible and will give you goosebumps. Sweet Adelines is a women's barbershop organization, plus the men's Barbershop Society is open now to women and are sponsoring blended groups as well as men's choruses and quartets. There is actually an excellent Sweet Adelines women's chorus, Song of Atlanta, in your area. You should check them out!
Woman today are welcome into the Barbershop Harmony Society as performers. GQ, a women's quartet finished 3rd and The Ladies finished 6th in the recent International contest in Charlotte, NC this past July. There were also mixed quartets and choruses with female singers. You will be welcomed with open arms if you choose to visit a chapter/chorus rehearsal.
Tara, if you haven't watched Michael Arden as Quasimodo, you are doing yourself a disservice. His rendition of Out There is stunning but you will be blown away by Made of Stone. I'd love to see a reaction to one (or both) of these songs but honestly listen to them either way. I love your channel!
I just want to say thank you for making the videos that you do! This year I have been getting sick a lot so my voice has had to take rest periods but when I can't sing, I watch your videos and it's like osmosis or something because I take as much info in and apply it when I am better. I have improved so much this year despite the times off so THANK YOU!
Not sure if anyone msg you about Harmony for the ladies but there is an organization called Sweet Adelines. They have chapters all over the USA, Canada, Sweden, and maybe others but I'm not sure. Hope this helps.
This is the first reaction video of this kind I've watched where the person reacting actually had something to say. I tend to get really annoyed with reaction videos for taking other people's content and adding very little to it, but you actually had helpful insight to share. Very cool!
Ahhh that was amazingggggg!!!! I’m in love with this arrangement 😍😍😍 You should react to the Newfangled Four! They’re a really awesome and funny barbershop group!
Find yourself some Sweet Adelines. I sing baritone with my group in Northwest Arkansas. Baritone is a funky type of harmony that us harmony junkies love. ❤️
Holly cow!! Finally after several times requesting this (Sorry Tara, I had to do it). I knew it was gonna blow you mind, they're amazing singers and barbershop music is lovely as well. This video has too much little thigs to talk about! And come on, those harmonies at the end :) So glad you reacted to this
That guy’s got an extra set of lungs somewhere in that suit. 20 seconds of full bore without so much as a single waver of the note. Good lord man... I’ve heard notes held for that length of time before but it’s never any less amazing to hear and see it. What an excellent performance. I loves me some barbershop. It’s a bit of a guilty pleasure, I admit.
Barbershops really in its own niche, I love it. My favorite group is probably Vocal Spectrum, they have a lot of good ones but Cruella De Vil is great fun!
@@Headshotphyco Sad, but true. Had they kept going (they've stopped competing) they could have been up there with Main Street and StormFront as gold medalists. also, "Nowhere near" is a bit harsh, they've hit 6th they had maybe 2 or 3 more years before they would be trading in for 3rd and 2nd.
Tara, I've been gushing over Ringmasters quartet, especially this song, for some time. The ending sends me into orbit just as it did you. Just to let you know (I didn't read all the comments to see if it's already been mentioned) - yes there is barbershop for women - known as Sweet Adelines. Here's a link to a recent international champion quartet...ua-cam.com/video/Nov8W3nSN1E/v-deo.html
The more barbershop the better!! Its is such an incredible art form that gets overlooked. What most people don't understand regarding barbershop is that, unlike any other form of music I know of, they have rules around chords that are not permitted in competition, making for both that unique sound and MUCH harder arrangements!! Seriously, keep doing barbershop reactions!! You will continue to be amazed!!
@Tarasimonstudio you should take a look at a humble prodigy, Tim Warrick. Tim tags. He will absolutely blow you away! And there are the Sweet Adelines if you're interested in singing Barbershop. The sweet adelines took barbershop and made it better😊
Yeah you should look into the Barbershop Harmony Society (all genders now welcome, men, women, and mixed ensembles), Mixed Barbershop Harmony Association (mixed groups only), and Harmony Incorporated and Sweet Adelines International (Female ensembles Only).
Sweet Adelines International is the international Womens' Barbershop organization. They have choruses all over the world. My mom was a Barbershopper for 30 years and was a member of 2 different choruses and 4 Quartets. Barbershop is so much fun!
I so enjoyed this reaction video. The original video brought me here. Now I not only know that it was tremendous, but also why it was tremendous. Well done!!!
Recommendation: anything from Sam Robson. His cover of "Run to You" by Pentatonix is absolutely phenomenal. His arrangements are insane and though he does stretch his range the sound is amazing.
I've really been hoping you'd do a barbershop video! For anyone who doesn't know this group, they are Swedish. For anyone not familiar with barbershop, it's a music form consisting of primarily four part, consonant chords (opposite of dissonant). The four parts are lead (sings the melody most of the time - in the tenor range), bass, tenor (harmonizes above the lead), and baritone (similar range as lead, sings the left over note in the chord). For reference, I think they are standing, from left to right, baritone, bass, tenor, lead. The characteristic sound of barbershop is the barbershop 7 chord, which is a flat 7 chord (e.g. C7 = C E G Bb), with a more consonant tuning than on a piano. The 7 is a little flatter than on a piano, which gives the chord the characteristic sound.
The last post was 20 seconds. The one before that was a little longer. I have heard Jacob post for 30 seconds or more. You can join the Barbershop Harmony Society now. We have opened up membership to women and will soon have both Women's and Mixed quartets and choruses in our International contests. And there is a lot of barbershop around the Atlanta area. In addition to BHS, in your neck of the woods, there is also Sweet Adelines International, which is a women's organization. There is also a smaller women's organization called Harmony, Incorporated, but I don't know how far it stretches into the south. BTW, I was in the front row for this performance. It is even more awesome in person.
I have waited so long for this! Have never clicked faster, and I am pretty sure this is the first time I have commented before watching the video, so excited!
+1 for doing barbershop! Do more! By the way, if you thought a 20 second post was awesome, check out Tim Waurick, the tenor from Vocal Spectrum, who literally bends the laws of physics with his posts. And it's not just the length of the post, but the strength and clarity of the note sung, for that length of time. It's insane. I was about to point you to GQ, and I started poking in the comments and everyone is telling you to go check them out already. What I love about them is that the timbre of their voices matches their parts so well. Their singing is hauntingly beautiful.

Agreed! Lol now I'm desperate for her to react to that
Yes love GQ
How about Crab bukkit?
I sing baritone in barbershop. I prefer it over lead any day. I do love Harmony as well!! Check out Harmony Inc or Sweet Adelines International, and Barbershop Harmony Society, which is the organization Ringmasters is part of, just allowed women to join the organization as well as full fledge members, which also allows them to compete! For female quartets, check out GQ. They're the first quartet that got me into barbershop!
And Frenzy! Can’t forget Nikki!
I'm the same, I live for crunchy chords and I love singing the harmony parts!
I am so excited you did a barbershop reaction!!!! That was truly ridonculous 😜😁
Ya!!! You have finally reacted to the ringmasters!! I have waited so long for you to watch and react to this!!! Thank you!!
Truly the pinnacle of Barbershop. Was absolutely stunned when I first saw it, just like you, and continue to be amazed whenever I see it.
That Tenor 2 is absolutely world class outstanding.
technically called a lead in barbershop, but yes, he is! Plenty more of stuff with him in it on youtube!
Thank you Tara, for reacting to this video!!!!
Overtones are great when vowels are sung the same way. We use to call the overtone a "Charlie" a long time ago.
@@rayk998 Overtones? Think you're talking about something different than I am.
@@maisiesummers42 What note are you hearing?
@@rayk998 I am hearing the "fifth" note or fifth voice - the virtual note created by all four voices coming together.
As I understand it, an "overtone" is when a singer makes two separate notes simultaneously, with the overtone being a high falsetto or whistle.
@@maisiesummers42 We always called it an overtone. Check out Max Q, a barbershop quartet.
Yesyesyesyesyes! ^_^
Thank you so much for doing this review Tara-! I'll take this as an early christmas present :)
As some have said, there are female chapters like the Sweet Adelines you can check out i fyou want to join.
Nothing like being in the room for performances like these- spine tingles for days...
Merry Christmas!
Edit: Spelling
EJ Cardona held his note on Oh Come All Ye Faithful for 25 seconds and the last 11 seconds of that went up to a higher note. Both very impressive.
Finally! Barbershop reaction. Please also react to Voctave with Vocal Majority - A Million Dreams!
I was there live - 2016, Nashville, in the little theater, eighth row, at my first Barbershop International. This performance changed my life.
And you should join Barbershop Tara! Women can join the Barbershop Harmony Society, or there is Sweet Adelines and Harmony Inc.
Yes!! I second this reaction!! Voctave and Vocal Majority are amazing together!
I watch this at least once a week in addition to ua-cam.com/video/RwUkjPUqVyM/v-deo.html
And yes! Baritone is melody to me🙂
4nbari same... that’s another phenomenal performance.
Girls barbershop is called “Sweet Adelines”! They have quarters and choruses all over the place.
I’m a Sweet Adeline! Are you with a chorus?
I was at that very performance. It was indeed spectacular!
I’m in love with this arrangement 😍😍😍
You should react to the Newfangled Four! They’re a really awesome and funny barbershop group!
Dude on the left and dude on the right (who also does their arrangements) are part of Zero8 who are incredible
Replicating the singing in this video is how I developed my current breath support. Barbershop is amazing.
So excited that you did this one! I've been hoping for it! They are amazing! Loved the video reaction, too!
Find yourself some Sweet Adelines. I sing baritone with my group in Northwest Arkansas. Baritone is a funky type of harmony that us harmony junkies love. ❤️
Me too! Bari's rule...other parts....lol!!!
Deborah Shipman yes!! 🎶❤️
Chris DeRosa from Viva is another Baritone
I sing Lead and Tenor with Brindabella Chorus!
My Grandpa sang Barber Shop Quartet and played trumpet 🎺 too.
He was born in 1900.
Please do Vocal Spectrum!
These guys are one of the greatest!
Yes! Do their rendition of Go The Distance!
Likewise, do "Go The Distance" The final post note by the tenor Tim Warrick is INSANE!
Holly cow!! Finally after several times requesting this (Sorry Tara, I had to do it). I knew it was gonna blow you mind, they're amazing singers and barbershop music is lovely as well. This video has too much little thigs to talk about! And come on, those harmonies at the end :) So glad you reacted to this
I got 25 seonds! The BEST arrangement ever written!
I feel like Tara is all of us the first time we heard this. :) amazing!
You have to do a song by NewFangledFour another barbershop quartet
Kova SSB NFF is really fun for the casual watcher but their intonation and raw talent is nowhere near the top level quartets.
I rewatch this performance all the time - two tags both of which are incredible
Wow...they can really sing...they make it look easy.
@Tarasimonstudio you should take a look at a humble prodigy, Tim Warrick. Tim tags. He will absolutely blow you away! And there are the Sweet Adelines if you're interested in singing Barbershop. The sweet adelines took barbershop and made it better😊
Yo. I keep saying this. She MUST check out Tim Waurick. I even paid for a Thanks comment in request. Back me up.
Barbershop review, finally! Thank you Tara for sharing your thoughts on this wonderful style!!
Yeah you should look into the Barbershop Harmony Society (all genders now welcome, men, women, and mixed ensembles), Mixed Barbershop Harmony Association (mixed groups only), and Harmony Incorporated and Sweet Adelines International (Female ensembles Only).
The speak-singing tip is so good
Please react to the Newfangled Four. They're super talented and funny! Their rendition of Hello My Baby is genius!
“That guys’ hair though” 😂😂😂😂 thats Martin for you!!
Maybe 23 seconds! The transitions in this arrangement are crazy!
oh man she finally dipped her toe into the world of BHS. So very excited. to watch this!!!
Sweet Adelines International is the international Womens' Barbershop organization. They have choruses all over the world. My mom was a Barbershopper for 30 years and was a member of 2 different choruses and 4 Quartets. Barbershop is so much fun!
I am so happy you are reacting to Barbershop, I have been waiting for this for soooooo long! Please do more!
I so enjoyed this reaction video. The original video brought me here. Now I not only know that it was tremendous, but also why it was tremendous. Well done!!!
Welcome to Ringmasters fandom! Check out The Westminster Chorus and other great barbershop groups!
Singing harmonies and hearing it all come together is so satisfying ;)
I'm glad you did a reaction to this performance. They were really terrific.
I was wrong. I went back and checked. The first post was 18 seconds. Just slightly less.
Thank you for including barbershop music
I am so glad you reacted to this
I didn't know Piers Morgan sang barbershop. Also, girl, I feel you. I couldn't count at the end either. heck.
If you're going to watch barbershop you have to hear Crossroads. Their rendition of Lucky Old Sun is amazing.
Do Vocal Spectrum Cruella Di Vill next! There's a super long note at the end and they're soooo good
I have waited so long for this! Have never clicked faster, and I am pretty sure this is the first time I have commented before watching the video, so excited!
These guys also have another great song, its called the Four Seasons Medely, I would love to see your reaction to it!
There are a ton of barbershop videos from the barbershop Harmony society. They are wonderful!
