Listening to Anderson's "light" music, I began to realize how much skill, talent, thought, and work went into making these lovely pieces that imitate cats, clocks, sleigh rides, or incorporate things like typewriters. That is a lot of skill and outside-the-box thinking. Frivolity is indeed serious business.
Anderson was an impeccably trained composer, studying at Harvard with the great Edward Burlingame Hill and Walter Piston. He definitely knew his craft.
We all love Leroy Anderson music and respond with tender joy to this song. Here's an idea: Pay your joy forward and adopt a shelter cat or kitten ... in giving a needy feline a loving home, you not only save a life, you bring the spirit of this song into yours.
I first heard this when I was playing my father's classical music records when I was 6 or 7. I couldn't remember the composer or title, but just searched for "the kitten waltz", and apparently it was close enough. Thanks for uploading this. It brings back memories.
HOW VERY INTRIGUING THAT MAESTRO LEROY ANDERSON SO ACCURATELY SIMULATED THE SOUND OF A CAT "MEOWING" IN THE LAST TWO BEATS OF THE PRIMARY SIX BEAT TUNE THAT RUNS THROUGH THIS DELIGHTFUL LITTLE PIECE. 🦋🌠"CATS, LESS LIQUID THAN THEIR SHADOWS, PRESENT NO ANGLES TO THE WIND. THEY PASS, NEAT AND UNDIMINISHED, THROUGH LOOPHOLES SMALLER THAN THEMSELVES."🦋🌠
Anyone who has owned or even admired a cat will enjoy this for what it is. And the end, with the dog barking, I grew up with dogs AND cats, a friend sticks up for a friend.
All of these are so much fun, thanks for taking the time, using your imagination and sharing them with us..........great viewing during our shut-in days.
They usually had puppet figures cut out of construction paper and moved along manually on a screen as a "visual" to these things. Two paper cats meowing, etc.
There MUST be a benevolent creator to have given us the music of Leroy Anderson, the big heart and talent of Nigel Sutton aannnd our wonderfully beautiful kitty cats. Mahalo Nui Loa Nigel with our warmest aloha. UA-cam, we love you too. Just don't muck it up.....too much with unbridled bean counter leeway.
Well done, sir... The harmonies between your editing of visuals and the music's own pacing are impeccable. You elicited many smiles from this cranky old gentleman. Thanks are in order.
Какое очаровательное видео с прелестной вальсовой музыкой! Найджел, восхищаюсь всем Вашим сериалом на музыку Лероя Андерсона, а этим видео ОСОБЕННО! Спасибо огромное!
Aloha from Honolulu Hawaii. Nigel, I love everything Leroy Anderson has written and I appreciate your putting this pieces on youtube. You do a wonderful job with the visuals.
I think cats are so graceful, so elegant when they dance. I've also seen a few cats who could "fly through the air with the greatest of ease",... 'cept for the crash at the end of their flight.
As both a music lover and a cat lover, I found this video absolutely charming. I am thoroughly enjoying your "stream" of Leroy Anderson videos ... one of my favourite "Light Music" composers. Thank you so much, Nigel.
HOW GREAT THIS,!!!!!!!.....great thanks for posting things in this way!!!!... YES...the combination with the music and your photo animations!! Let me tell you,I am one of the greatest cat lovers one can imagine.I swear it!..And I love cats MORE than human and other animals,if I may say so!!!!! And also appreciative with regard to the music,Leroy Anderson composed for this.And..in the early post-war years,we needed this kind of music,it had a curing effect on all of us at that time.. But...on the whole...I'm a great lover of Anderson's music, cos I was brought up with his music in the early 50s.And...as you know...lots of good old Light Orchestra Tunes went in oblivion, but NOT Anderson's creations,today....during Xmas time you still can hear his Sleigh Ride. Another tune, being part of my memory, was a waltz with bells, and yes......after searching....how bloody else....by Anderson again, his "Song of the Bells".And not only his Typewriter, but even more his Sandpaper Ballet.First tune I learnt was The Syncopated Clock, every morning before going to school,I heard this tune on the radio..Wonderful times, shouldn't we be clamouring for coming back all this? I cannot live on without his music, just HE told us,what music really was(and still is and willl be FOR EVER!!!) Anderson was a genius and his music is immortal and will withstand all of today's commercial cramped attempts in order to distract us from the real thing!!!!! Nigel...you have done a GREAT thing here,...and thanks so much for that!!!!!
You are most welcome. I am really pleased you enjoyed this video. I really had great fun sourcing all the photographs.... leroy Anderson s such a great composer and arranger. I admire his works, very much. Best wshs, Nigel
@alger Thanks for your reaction. Cats reign the world and in some Asian areas they are HOLY. The cat I have now is my best friend ever!!Taken from the street!!!
Nigel, I see that you have singlehandedly championed Leroy Anderson and his music as no one else can. Thanks so much. Your videos are beautifully edited.
Thank you very much, Noe. I am really pleased you enjoy my videos showcasing the music of Leroy Anderson. Unfortunately a number have suddenly been blocked and/or the music muted due to copyright.... Nigel
In the early '50s, several mothers in my school enrolled their "talented" daughters in a ballet class. My Mom was one of those mothers. For our first recital we ware fancy tutus and danced to "The Waltzing Cat". We were in three rows. Your's truely was in the back row at the far end. (Does that say what kind if talent I didn't have?) I found the photo a family friend took and it appears that almost al the girls have passed - after all, we would be in our 70's. My parents are no longer with us as is my only sibling - an older sister. There is one whom I lost contact with. I will be sending a Facebook private message, if I can find her name. I would love to reminise a bit.
I first heard Leroy Anderson on Captain Kangaroo, though of course I didn't know what it was. I remember this piece, and, the typewriter, syncopated clock, Fiddle Faddle, and several others, with very simple visuals, figures cut out of construction paper. Simpler times.
He was a master of light orchestral music, sometimes amusing, sometimes serious and sometimes poetic. To be able to conjure up in just a few minutes the emotional appeal his music has, is phenomenal.... Thanks for your visit. Nigel

This is his original recording (from "Leroy Anderson Conducts His Own Compositions" [Volume 1]). In a later recording, he added the sounds of whistles at 1:29, and a dog bark and cat hiss at 2:35.

Chumble spuzz to you, too.

@@mdesapio yet he was so underrated:(
Even as a child, I could see kittens and cats in my mind as I first listened to this.
Yes Children, there was once a day in America that beautiful music was made!
My grandfather used to play this one for me growing up. Good memories
I never tire of seeing these cats while listening to this song.
Absolutely! This is going to become a favourite. The work that went into sourcing these photos must have been considerable!
Love the way the string instruments imitate a cat's "meow" in this!
Yes, ingenious!
Violinists can make the strings do lots of things. Trombonists as well.
leroy anderson. master of the tone poem.
🎼 This selection of MEW_sic is the CaT's MeOw!🐈
Truly my two favorite things, cats and waltzes. Cat pictures were so appropriate for the music.
I didn't think that music could be adorable but awwww
No matter how depressed and anxious anyone is, it's impossible not to smile listening to this. Thank you so much Nigel.
A agree totally.
I thought you might want to hear the composer sing the later version with lyrics--cute! ua-cam.com/video/BpsTjq7j0dUv/v-deo.html

The pleasure is all mine. Thanks. Nigel

Melodies from my youth make me feel so young again !

Thank you for this. I just stumbled on it. It is wonderful for a cat lover like me.
This piece is an absolute joy to play. I love it!!
We both love Leroy Anderson. As Nikki is 37 years younger than me, I introduced her to his music. Fabulous!
I agree Pete. I, too love the musical works of Leroy Anderson. So full of charm and personal interpretation. Thanks for coming by. Nigel
Great pictures to go with this happy music! Ah, the incredible cat, God's finest animal creation!
@Info Chan So true!
Heard this on the radio today. Wonderful
Absolutely beautiful!
I have alway thought that Leroy Anderson was underrated as an American composer. His music is delightful. Thanks for the video.
You're most welcome. Thank you

A great video to begin the day. Watch this makes me happy 😺
Thanks a lot Carlos. You are most welcome. Nigel
This was on Captain Kangaroo all the time, along with the other Leroy Anderson classics: typewriter, Fiddle-Faddle, sandpaper ballet, etc.
They usually had puppet figures cut out of construction paper and moved along manually on a screen as a "visual" to these things. Two paper cats meowing, etc.
Hey, l recall tune as a child. Never heard of Leroy Anderson until last Christmas when l got " Sleigh Ride". He's good!

Thank you! We used to sing this in my high school glee club. You did a lovely job!
Of all the pieces Leroy Anderson wrote, this one is my favorite!😻💜
I love Leroy Anderson's music anyway but these visuals are beyond belief!
Thank you very much. This was such fun to make....

+John Smith .... and I thank you very much for your very kind comment.
I am really pleased you enjoyed my "interpretation". Have a good day! Nigel
Beautiful history 👏👏👏
My favourite: "meow, meow" through the violines....😻
If I was at my great grandmother's funeral,I would play this and she wakes up
I remember hearing this when I was a TINY kid-- maybe 2 years old. I thought it was beautiful -- I had no idea then what it was or what it meant
A great piece of music, I love Leroy Anderson's compositions.
0:41 meow....
Awww, so many cute kitties here. 1:03 is precious!
Smiles and regards to you. Beauty job! Thanks.

+Nigel -- I have yet to upload anything but I've noticed that several of my Playlists have taken a beating. The overlords insist on getting their way.
Makes me quite angry, really - especially as they have been only recently blocked and not from the time they were originally uploaded.....
YES!!! "as no one else can". What a genius R.A. was!!!!!!
Delightful!
Precious song!
The most exciting part: THE INSTRUMENT EFFECT: mEoW!
The second most exciting part: THE pIcTuReS!
how lovely :-)
Thank you very much.....
Lovely. Even ends with Grumpy Cat right at the end.
This version omitted the sounds of barking dogs plus a hissing like cat sound.
Puuuurrrfect. X

Sounds like an Always Sunny song!
Спасибо, Александр. Весело, чтобы сделать ..... Найджел
what would the world do if they enjoyed the gentle mellow orchestral, instead of the smell of teen spirit, or the glare of auto-tuning....
Спасибо большое
