I finally managed to graduate from Cornell in 5/77 although I was class of '75 - and this was the last event I attended before I left. It was such a memorable concert because it was so clear and pristine - the acoustics were the best Barton Hall ever produced.
I’ve heard this show many times and never realized how incredible this Jack Straw is. The entire “Leaving Texas, 4th day of July” verse leaves me stunned.
You folks have nailed the sensibility of the Dead as I remember them from growing up In NorCal and also in revisiting them sans Gerry in Santa Clara in 2015. Keep it up, please!
this always gets overlooked due to the 2nd set. garcia's playing in this jack straw is so beautiful & fluid. you'd be hard pressed to find a better version.
love Jack Straw it is a song you know you are going to hear at a concert just like Bertha or Good Lovin so love them or hate them they are a staple GD song and I love them all, but with a terrapin mixed in on a whim it makes life not so predictable!🎶
Chase, been meaning forever to sign up on You Tube primarily to thank you for all the great stuff you upload. Saw most of my Dead shows from the summer of 76 through 83 or so . I rarely stray past 78 when streaming shows and spend a lot of time in the 60s but regardless I know if I see your name whatever the year the offering is worth taking. Dropped my comment under this one because it's a rare time when I'd call a particular version of a tune "best ever" , this Jack Straw is transcendent and as usual your post is from the fullest version on the IA , again thank you.
This whole show is awesome, I've still got a bootleg cassette of it I've had since 1997. These guys had some good nights, some bad nights, but this was definitely a GREAT night on that stage!
Beautiful music I heard it on cassette back in the day, one of their greatest shows ever! What an electric performance, they were "on" that night, for sure, thanks for the post, keep 'em coming, many thanks, peace and music, Paisley Tom 06 23 2012
Love myself some Jack Straw. I put together all the shows that began with Jack Straw in Set I and it definitely sets a tone. Cold Rain & Snow is another favorite in the lead off position. Damn if Jerry always mixed up his two solo lines every time.
@chasefukuoka61 You really know your stuff.........This show has been one of my favorite shows for many many years. I had a bootleg which was the worst recording in the world back in the early 90's. Thank god for Archive!!!!!!............Keep it going brother!!!
I am going as well....I hope to see you there...I will be wearing A tie dye T shirt...and will be smoking A big Fat "J"...you will know me when you see me .lol :)
This is Bobby at his very best in my opinion. Jerry was great here, but I prefer a few other Jack Straw versions for his solos. But the kid was untouchable in his vocals and rhythm guitar this night.
@thegunnydog - i haven't uploaded anything but if you do a google search for "Lafayette College 1979-05-07 live archive" you can download a pretty good quality audience recording of the show.
So I was waiting to get into this show. It was about noon - one o'clock and this dude comes up to me and says he's from the Cornell Concert Commission and asks if I'd like to get inside early. I said what do I have to do? And he says just give me your ticket and then go stand by that little side door over there at four o'clock and I'll get you inside. Well stupid as it sounds I actually trusted the guy and gave him my ticket to the show. Well you know what? He was sincere and he did get me in early, and I was the first one to enter the arena that night. I set myself in the center of the barricade right between Bobby and Jerry's mics and stayed right there for the entire show, tripping my ya-ya's out. I even had a conversation with Weir before the second set started. You can hear his side of the conversation on the CD. It's before Scarlet Begonias right after the Step-Back. Weir asks the crowd "there, don't you feel better?" Well we were being crushed worse than ever after the Step-Back and when I heard people behind me start to cheer I shouted out "NO"! Weir looked at me and said "Whataya mean no?"

Phils on point best Jack Straw I've ever heard!
Classic username!
So many good ones> you'd like Hartford same tour
I’ve heard this show many times and never realized how incredible this Jack Straw is. The entire “Leaving Texas, 4th day of July” verse leaves me stunned.
Was just today thinking, and feeling the same. That is how love for your country should be.
Such a great version
best Jack Straw ever... and I've listened to hundreds of 'em
jerry's bluegrass skills are evident! Wow!
Excellent quality, thanks! Check out in HEADPHONES....Love Phil's work at this show.
I have never heard a superior version of this song...
I think 9/77 Englishtown is the height of this year even though consensus says it is this run.
1977 was a great year for the Grateful Dead
Yes it was...my brother & I went to their live shows in DC & Baltimore that year.
best dead show of all time IMO 5.8.77. legendary
Agree - I was there.
May 77' Flawless. Transcending at times, on point every night. Legendary part of music and definitely for the Band with a heart of gold
Love this song! Veneta '72 is my favourite
Favorite version of Jack Straw right here. Jerry's guitar work in the jam before the final stanza give me chills.
There are better JS… Europe 72?
@@GammaNu955 Jerry's guitar licks in that recording are the best, IMO. His playing is too busy to touch the moment in this one
Twirl and turn your eyes to the sky and say "God bless the Grateful Dead"
I burst into tears each time in hear this song.
Donna is tbe finishing touch to this, fkn epic!!!! I love her at the end at 506 super sassy woo!
May of 77 was a good year I must say. Best shows I've heard. This song gives me goose bumps.
You folks have nailed the sensibility of the Dead as I remember them from growing up In NorCal and also in revisiting them sans Gerry in Santa Clara in 2015. Keep it up, please!
Excellent in more ways than my finger can point at. You keep us on the run.😢🎉😂
I miss Jerry too! He lives on in his music! What a kind man to leave so much joy and peace behind. RIP! Heaven must have one hell of a rock band!
Great version! And I love the 72. Thanks.

Dead to the Core
energy, rhythmic and enticing to that feeling accompanied by listening to a dead song at its highest standards.
this always gets overlooked due to the 2nd set. garcia's playing in this jack straw is so beautiful & fluid. you'd be hard pressed to find a better version.
The drummers really make this one move. Nice work.

Best Jack Straw I've ever heard...
Another super tasty version of Jack Straw with some more inspired playing by Jerry is the 6/9/77 Winterland show. Makes me cry......I miss Jerry.
Might be the best Dead live song there is. Incredible!
Beautiful music I heard it on cassette back in the day, one of their greatest shows ever! What an electric performance, they were "on" that night, for sure, thanks for the post, keep 'em coming, many thanks, peace and music, Paisley Tom 06 23 2012
The Apex of The Grateful Dead! This entire show is damn near flawless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Believe it, that's the Grateful Dead.
Best Jack Straw
Only better one i can think of is Tuscaloosa Alabama same year.
Love myself some Jack Straw. I put together all the shows that began with Jack Straw in Set I and it definitely sets a tone. Cold Rain & Snow is another favorite in the lead off position. Damn if Jerry always mixed up his two solo lines every time.
Lovely video montage to go with this awesome soundboard recording of a night for the band that shall live forever.

Love this song as a set closer-so powerful!

Absolutely the best Jack Straw. Some kind of Appalachia thing going on here in the best Dead kind of way.
The soloing here is just amazing
Exquisite just out of this world sheesh
My 15th birthday.
What a gift.
This is Bobby at his very best in my opinion. Jerry was great here, but I prefer a few other Jack Straw versions for his solos. But the kid was untouchable in his vocals and rhythm guitar this night.

Listen to Jerry! Pickin! Is the man on fire or what!!

Hip hip Horaayyy!!!
no show on my bday!
Your taste mirrors mine Chase
sound tech...step back! let the musicians do what they know best...and...voila...listen!
@bobshenix As you say, who's to say. Boston was fraught with technical problems although a patient deadhead could easily overlook these.
1/2 mile from Tucson....

Nuff’ said

Holy grail shit

Listen to the crowd at the end... are they "diggin' it " or what? heh heh heh,
