Last winter while back in Pennsylvania I took delivery of a beautifully made parang from Sepuh Crafts. It has taken me longer than expected to get a video review up on my channel but life hasn't been giving me any breaks since we got back to Brazil.
I am very impressed with this tool. Not only is it elegant but also functional in the extreme. Form follows function and function has a charm all its own. Without a doubt this parang has what it takes to get the job done in the wilderness.

The parang is a fantastic tool for a tropical environment. Paired with a small, sharp knife there is very little you can't get done.

I agree completely. I’ve traveled on medical/disaster deployments and while jungle camping in the Philippines and Central America and my Parang has been everywhere with me. It is irreplaceable and will be handed down to my son when the time comes. I carry a small file and a ceramic stone to maintain the blade.

They generally are made from leaf springs, hand forged, and differentially tempered. The back of the blade is milder than the edge.

The original name of the blade is Duku Chandong
    Duku means parang
Chandong means the type/shape of the parang
    Parang literally means Machete
    Machete means big knife
This parang originate from Malaysia by the Dayak tribe
The parang is a multipurpose blade
Like for chopping wood for fire, slaughtering animals for food, and also as a weapon

I've been waiting for you to get one of these so I could hear your opinion. They are awesome blades. My uncle died recently and I asked for his parang. He was forest ranger in Malaysia and used it everyday. But his one had a bowie drop down tip which is unusual for that part of the world. I guess American influences have crept in. Keep on going with the great videos!

That’s my go to blade...lately I’ve been trying (Louisiana Bayou and Nicaraguan rain forrest/Jungle) an Imacasa 16” Latin style machete, a 14” Tramontina Bolo and a few others. I’m starting to rework the blade on the Bolo and I’m REALLY liking it, but I keep coming back to my Malay Parang.

    • @Colhane
      @Colhane  6 років тому +1

This parang is a fantastic tool. It lacks the reach of a longer blade when clearing land or moving throuh thick brush. When opening a trail it helps if you don't have to bend over all day to clear around knee high. The Latin pattern machetes work well when you have to move through jungle or tall grass. I'm a big fan of the Tramontina Bolo, most bang for the buck in the machete world. The problem is finding a decent sheath for it. My favorite machete is my modified tramontina, 14 inch golok pattern with my dual scandi/convex grind, and square to round spine. That is in several other videos on my channel.

LOL Watch the video again, at 18 seconds right before the fade you see me get the news from about 15 ants on my right leg. Unfortunately Giuliano was shutting off the camera when it happened. Normally I wear BDU pants with the legs tied down on my boots but they were dirty.
I was clearing a space for a hammock in that shot but the ground under the leaf litter was swarming with ants so we moved to a new location.

If of sudden a person cut by the Parang for the first time he holds it than that parang or duku meant to be with that person..Blood Brother...according to Iban Native Sarawak Borneo

    • @Colhane

Intersting. Proverbs 27:6 "Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses." Whenever I handle a blade that has a long tradition in a certain location I conclude it is the distilled collective wisdom of generations of users and is the best blade possible for that area. The Parang is a fantastic general use blade for the tropics.
