Last winter while back in Pennsylvania I took delivery of a beautifully made parang from Sepuh Crafts. It has taken me longer than expected to get a video review up on my channel but life hasn't been giving me any breaks since we got back to Brazil.
I am very impressed with this tool. Not only is it elegant but also functional in the extreme. Form follows function and function has a charm all its own. Without a doubt this parang has what it takes to get the job done in the wilderness.
We in borneo use parang as a everyday tool..99% of borneo interior region hv parang..bcoz for us parang is our guardian, friend n saviour when we go deep to the jungle..parang also give us courage n good spirit when u r alone in the jungle..
The parang is a fantastic tool for a tropical environment. Paired with a small, sharp knife there is very little you can't get done.
I agree completely. I’ve traveled on medical/disaster deployments and while jungle camping in the Philippines and Central America and my Parang has been everywhere with me. It is irreplaceable and will be handed down to my son when the time comes. I carry a small file and a ceramic stone to maintain the blade.
Yes...as a native in borneo this is our survival tool every day use in the jungle
They generally are made from leaf springs, hand forged, and differentially tempered. The back of the blade is milder than the edge.
I have this too. Good chopper.
In my hometown we call it Jandong. Is it KK mark in it? Its made by KK Fuu the only one blacksmith left in my hometown. I have own many of his handmade tools
This is surely top 10 legendary blade in the world!
Hello Dave, The Parang you try n holding is the Iban tride Parang our tride in Borneo Island. Your holding type was ordenary style parang we have much temp difference other with large blade.
The original name of the blade is Duku Chandong
Duku means parang
Chandong means the type/shape of the parang
Parang literally means Machete
Machete means big knife
This parang originate from Malaysia by the Dayak tribe
The parang is a multipurpose blade
Like for chopping wood for fire, slaughtering animals for food, and also as a weapon
All of the above. I have lived here full time since 99 and for two years before that.
That is duku chandong.. design originally from Sarawak, Borneo
Ferramenta fenomenal, um objeto de desejo! Deu pra ver bem o fio que você deu nele, e na hora do corte soltou um " opa " em português hahahah! Grande abraço Mac
Mac, Great video! The Parang is a great tool that everyone should consider! You did it real justice here my friend! We are glad to see this video, Mike and I were just talking about you and your channel last week.
This parang is a powerful blade. I like it
Nice one....Duku Chandong...chopper type parang..from Sarawak Borneo..Iban people
I've been waiting for you to get one of these so I could hear your opinion. They are awesome blades. My uncle died recently and I asked for his parang. He was forest ranger in Malaysia and used it everyday. But his one had a bowie drop down tip which is unusual for that part of the world. I guess American influences have crept in. Keep on going with the great videos!
The myparang version is leaf spring 5160 carbon steel, this could be fairly similar …
As legend said the Parang or Duku chandong was an idea design by our God from Pangau Libau..
This is our traditional blade called Duku Chandong from Iban tribe of Sarawak..we used this when we go to the jungle..we also have the blade longer for bush clearing..
I love love love that parang.
So just recently learned of the parang and tried to find one of these sepuh parangs but no luck. Do you have knowledge of how to get one or recommendation on another traditionally made parang ?!
Thanks !!!!
Man, that thing is sharp. You can even shave with it.
That’s my go to blade...lately I’ve been trying (Louisiana Bayou and Nicaraguan rain forrest/Jungle) an Imacasa 16” Latin style machete, a 14” Tramontina Bolo and a few others. I’m starting to rework the blade on the Bolo and I’m REALLY liking it, but I keep coming back to my Malay Parang.
This parang is a fantastic tool. It lacks the reach of a longer blade when clearing land or moving throuh thick brush. When opening a trail it helps if you don't have to bend over all day to clear around knee high. The Latin pattern machetes work well when you have to move through jungle or tall grass. I'm a big fan of the Tramontina Bolo, most bang for the buck in the machete world. The problem is finding a decent sheath for it. My favorite machete is my modified tramontina, 14 inch golok pattern with my dual scandi/convex grind, and square to round spine. That is in several other videos on my channel.
@@Colhane There's a longer version of this Malay parang to do those kind of work u mention but for daily usage..the version u got is irreplaceable..we even use it in our martial art(silat) training🙂
@@arshatarifin7442 It is an amazing design, extremely useful.
Este parang foi feito na Malásia. Você pode ler mais no link. Ele foi enviado a mim para testes e avaliação. O parang é uma lâmina excelente para a selva.
Fantastic Parang a peace of art.
I got to tell you when you skinned your thumb, I said that was funny and boy it must be sharp. Good selling point combined with your details on the history of the blade style, I will check it out I been looking at a Parang for a bit. looks good.
Nice blade. You could use oil to save wooden sheath. Best regards my friend
great review John...thanks for sharing!
Where can these be purchased online
Parabéns Mac e Giuliano pelo video, mesmo com as formigas coadjuvantes. Lâminas asiáticas realmente primam pelo conforto e eficiência. Há tempo desejo adquirir um golok e sua indicação do link foi muito valiosa.
leaf springs are often 5160 steel
Sim, mas uma vez de usar no mato faz todo sendido.
Gostaria de saber sua opinião sobre facões com lâminas de estilo kukri.
Mc, foi vc quem fez esta peça?
Ficou muito bonita.
nice review. but please be careful taking the blade out of the sheath.keep your finger away from the blade side of the sheath as the blade can cut through and in to your fingers.
Meu amigo Colhane, onde eu compraria um facão deste ? Gostaria muito de experimenta-lo no mato.
Thanks, Things have been busy for me lately, not too much time to make videos.
Is your sparrow knife made out of 1095 like others i saw on the site and if so why do you like 1095 in a knife steel?
You must try duku tangkin..
Look like iban people duku candung
Left contact info to try and reach Co to order one but have not had a return contact.
LOL Watch the video again, at 18 seconds right before the fade you see me get the news from about 15 ants on my right leg. Unfortunately Giuliano was shutting off the camera when it happened. Normally I wear BDU pants with the legs tied down on my boots but they were dirty.
I was clearing a space for a hammock in that shot but the ground under the leaf litter was swarming with ants so we moved to a new location.
What are you doing down in Brazil ? Vacation or work?
I believe that it is made from a land rover leaf spring
And yes it's sharp, I like it.
Looks like it works as good as my Kukri.
Parece com a espada do Aladim!
this parang name is Duku Candung that mean chopper type parang.
I am also having trouble contacting the company you recommend about getting a parang. Does anyone know any other sources for a good parang or go lock?
Follow here, one option www.myparang.com
If of sudden a person cut by the Parang for the first time he holds it than that parang or duku meant to be with that person..Blood Brother...according to Iban Native Sarawak Borneo
Intersting. Proverbs 27:6 "Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses." Whenever I handle a blade that has a long tradition in a certain location I conclude it is the distilled collective wisdom of generations of users and is the best blade possible for that area. The Parang is a fantastic general use blade for the tropics.
ray mears parang? ray mears did not design that parang...he copied that design from borneo, sarawak to be exact...it is called parang candung
Duku candong
Hahahahahaha!!!!! Four minutes in........bye!
