Landlord and tenant issues have always been handled in landlord/tenant courts in Civil Court. It has never been a criminal matter. Why are these people offering rental properties if they don't understand how eviction proceedings work?
I backed out of buying a rural very run down farmhouse in Ct -beautiful land because a carload of squatters showed while I was viewing it- Not English speaking -dressed in brand new clothes -stuffed in a car like a clown car -5 kids pouring out in the mud in brand new white sneakers!

The way it works here is, whoever holds the deed to the property is the rightful owner. Don't understand the confusion.
The way it SHOULD work but not how it does. If the squatter stays long enough, he/she/they will have to be evicted, and if they stay undisturbed for years, they can own it via adverse possession. 😂 Ridiculous, hence why new laws must be enacted.

Most people in North America do not really how privileged they are to be owning and driving cars and enjoying gasoline at merely U.S.$3 a gallon . . . whilst many other countries (including small ones with much lower incomes) have prices up to double that. In Barbados, it has been as high as U.S.$2+ per litre!

Squatters??? How can this happen...homeowners have a Deed, Title Insurance Policies. The squatters need to pay that and the homeowners should have a right to say I want all my money reimbursed. The whole thing is ridiculous...they are trespassers.

So it seems to me like the real problem here is the amount of vacant housing we have at the same time as the affordability of housing skyrockets. Maybe if we quit allowing the rich to run roughshod over everybody else, this wouldn't be such a problem. I'm not defending squatting, but the mainstream news has a fundamentally classist perspective as always.
I got away with squatting in an abandoned house in California for about 4 months in 2005 and left clean. The considerate squatter - and I can't emphasize this enough - LEAVES when the owner returns, preferably before. My occupancy came with it's own hot springs. Top that.✌️

I feel like it’s been reported for months and months and months now that famine in Gaza is “imminent”! (Their quotations, not mine) Just what exactly are these poor people existing on?! Squatting is called trespassing. In Florida trespassing is a crime with no statute of limitations. If you are on property and the owner wants you removed you will be trespassed warned and leave. The second time you are on that property you will be arrested for trespassing and charged. If they enforce the trespassing law there is no need of a squatters law.

As a child I was legally removed from one group of dysfunctional and abusive group of people, and placed into another group of abusive and dysfunctional group of people.
I am not disputing the legal system/judge's decision on having me removed from the first group of people. And, don't want that custody or authority to be given back to my biological relatives or their relatives.
