  • Purdown Percy was a mythical supergun at the Bristol HAA (Heavy Anti Aicraft) site. Purdown Percy’ was the name given to a legendary supergun supposedly placed here during the war. There was no such weapon. What there was was a battery of 3.7-inch guns and the occasional 40mm Bofors gun(s)
Stoke Park was the large Yellow House most people are familiar with on the M32 Motorway out of Bristol.
We look at these sites by Drone and on foot. Accompanied by the Angry Angel.
For "Exploring with Dan" who deleted his comment after I answered him... yes the BT tower has a nuclear bunker. The tower is designed to take a nuclear blast and keep running so that means it has a bunker capable to holding staff members who can see to the running of the tower. Just common sense if you do the research.

As a kid, i used to explore this area regularly. i lived not too far from here and went to school at Lockleaze secondary ( now demolished ). The yellow building used to be a mental asylum and before the motorway was constructed, you could walk down to Sea Mills past Duchesses pond ( also defunct )

I know of one near me. Only just discovered and even luckily gained access location is very secret sadly better off that way. Some disrespectful idiot trespassed and sprayed some writing on the wall really good condition. Got an Anderson shelter and four batteries sadly no doors. Used to be a scrapyard owned by Italian prisoners war.

The Yellow house 'The Dower House' was a very early Lunatic Asylum/Mental Hospital, the clock tower seen from your footage is all that remains of the rest of the hospital complex!
Can remember friends exploring it as kids, and finding the padded cell, before it was all redeveloped.

My stepdad's house where I grew up is a 10min walk from Purdown, I used to go up there all the time when I was young, haven't been up there for about 15 years now though. My Dad used to work up on the tower occasionally, too.

If you are taking the dog out maybe clip the lead to a carabiner which you can clip to your belt loops or belt meaning you can still use the camera but also have control of the dog. And if there is other dogs unhook it and use it by hand. Love the videos. Keep it up

Just a thought, the GPO relay tower is one of the most prominent landmarks for miles around. Its located on a hill with not much else immediately nearby. Why have a bunker under such an easy target?

    • @1970joules1970
      @1970joules1970 4 роки тому

That's true, except I think there's a more modern bunker to do with the tower itself, and Matt suggests that too. If there is, I presume it would be for a crew of engineers to maintain it, and the generators. It would indeed have been a sitting duck, but nevertheless, a functional requirement.
Never really made sense to me that these towers where meant to provide a failsafe communication network in the event of a nuclear attack, that an enemy could hardly miss them as they are so prominent, and might think to target them initially, maybe not nuclear as such, but to just destroy them. Bit of a design flaw really.

Very interesting channel, subbed a while ago, the first gun enplacment in the video is identical in design to one near to where i live in Sandwell Valley, West Bromwich, near to Hill Top Golf course, off Forge Lane, on top of a hill it has the floor fixings for where the gun would have rotated and also the shell stores around the edges clearly showing the hinge mounts where the steel blast doors would have been, its at grid ref SP035915 for anyone that may be interested, up the hill at the rear, of the club house,in the nearby copse you can still see the concrete bases where i should imagine some sort of huts would have stood, due to disability I havent been up there in a while but I guess it is still there, Im enjoying all your Bunker Videos, Cheers Mike

had cause to visit there when working for a telecoms service provider in i have to say it is a ROYAL pain in the arse to get equipment up there as there is only one access route for a vehicle and the track is gated about a quarter of a mile south at the end of the track and the council will not entertain letting someone through which meant i had to piss about alone with 150 kg of kit and a sack truck i will never forget that day grumble mutter!!!

A lot of these transmitter towers are having their dishes removed. Originally it was much cheaper, and in a lot of cases faster, to use as a backhaul for business to link two sites together. These days the only companies that really make use them are stock traders, and older mobile phone network coverage, with the vast majority of the original link sites covered by dark fiber networks, there is very little reason to continue to use a radio link. Even mobile networks favour smaller self owned sites due to poorer coverage of faster network tech like 4g.

I was shown around the big house called the dower house before it was a mental hospital stoke park I view it before the builders tore it apart and it was brilliant lots of rooms to explore and basement and attic was amazing but I was disappointed that I didn’t find the two secret passages made for the duke of Beaufort back in the times of King Charles who. Gave them the house and estate stretching as far as glouster......

Have you tried interacting with the other dogs while someone else holds your dog? my dog used to hate other dogs, but it was just trying to be protective. Once my dog saw other dogs interacting with me and that I was ok, my dog dropped it's guard and was pretty friendly with all the dogs we came across. Just had to be wary of other dogs getting their back up, because it was instant panic mode and into defence for my dog then. Just a passing thought, thanks for the intertesting vids.

anti aircraft cluster with command and control centre as the first set of bunkers. second set is ammo and further away. reinforced lump to stabilise the guns. there would have been a cluster of big guns supported by a smaller guns and a bunch of observers, ammo bunkers around the guns are set so you can take ammo from behind the gun whichever way it is pointing when in action.

Yeah as Ryan said... walk in... dont break in. Dont turn on the lights as its theft of electricity. Its useful to film to prove to police or security that you were well behaved - then they cant do diddly squat apart from ask you to leave. Dont come back as then its agrrivated trespass and that criminal so can be acted upon. Easy peasy.

Hi worked at BT YPUR (Purdown radio station) for 4 years until 1976. It was used to relay TV and telephone circuits from London tower to South Wales and South West England. Also used for a transmitter site for BT first mobile phone service. It does not have a bunker just blast proof area's. In 1974 I placed a Christmas tree on the spike at top of tower and informed BBC Bristol that we had the highest Christmas tree in Bristol. Good times.
