restaurateur was shot to death on the evening of Tuesday, December 2, on the doorstep of his eatery situated along the Libramiento bypass at the north end of Plaza Interlago.
MULTIPLE POLICE UNITS AND FORENSIC INVESTIGATORS APPEARED ON THE SCENE IN THE AFTERMATH OF THE FATAL SHOOTING OF A WELL-KNOWN LAKESIDE RESTAURATEUR.
The victim was identified as Carlos Alberto Robledo Reyes, the co-owner of El Fogón de Charlotte, along with his wife Lorena.
Robledo’s wife and their young daughter, for whom the restaurant is named, reportedly witnessed the crime, watching in horror as a gunman shot Robledo in the head before fleeing from the parking lot in a white truck.
Officers from various police force units cordoned off the crime scene until a state forensic team arrived to collect evidence and retrieve the corpse. The homicide remains under investigation by state authorities to determine the motive and identify the perpetrator.
The Chapala government issued an official statement offering condolences to the victim’s loved ones and assurances of their full cooperation in the investigation.
An outpouring of support has emerged among clients and friends of Robledo’s grieving survivors. A candlelight vigil in his memory was held outside the restaurant on Thursday, December 3. Donations of cash and items up for bid in a virtual silent auction are being funneled through the Lake Chapala Crime Watch Facebook group and other social media.

Our personal story
My wife Lori and myself sold our home and our business in Hawaii and in 2006 we became homeless. Our goal was to travel around the world and "living the good life" are basic philosophy is
Fly First Class but PAY Coach Price "
.We have enjoy our world tour of 37 countries in the last 25 years. In 2012 we returned back to the big Island of Hawaii and bought a small cottage. For 2 Years we using Hawaii as our home-base.
We now have moved back to Mexico and using Mexico is our home-base as we continue to travel around the world.
We have been asked by our friends to start this UA-cam channel blog to share our experience and give some tips on LIVING THE GOOD LIFE.

So sorry to hear of this incident. However, your honesty in your videos is greatly appreciated.
Small business owners are always at risk in MX and Central America for extortion. If you dont pay you or a family member dies quite often. This is gang business and they have many operatives. A better business bet might be to own rental property...we dont but have friends who do, who only rent to other foreigners, not locals. Wear nothing flashy except to private parties. Drive nothing too new or flashy. Use a disposible cell phone not an iphone. The less you look in public as if you HAVE money by local standards, the less a target you will be. You cannot look truly local but you can look not prosperous enough to bother with. My female USA and European friends after decades here get tired of looking tourist or poor so we DO dress up and look chic at each others homes for dinner parties, holiday parties etc. We all have beautiful homes and gardens walled off with high razor wire electrified tops. We all have at least one loyal guard dog. Guardians ie security people can be bribed, dogs cant....make sure no one can toss posioned meat over your wall to your dog...easy to do with bougainvillia. Use security cameras...and bad guys stay FAR away of camera range of your property and hit easier targets. Own NO safe which attracts attention of maids and other help or service people. If you do these things and own no business you can happily and safely live a wonderful life. Or you can live a backpacker lifestyle as we did when we first came....you will attract zero attention if they KNOW you have nothing of value with you.
You never mention the towns East of Chapala, how is it to live there. Might be a good video to talk about them.
Mezcala and Ocotlán
Just wondering
We are building a home in a community just above San Nicolas de Ibarra. Still very affordable and super quiet and safe.
I live in Houston Texas, people are getting murder almost every day, sad that we are living through a pandemic and their are still horrible people in the world.
Both of you, please stay safe. People are economically DESPERATE right now, and desperate people with nothing to lose will go to the wealthiest areas (with the busiest CASH businesses they can rob) and if they can't do that, they will look for wealthy, older people to target. Living in Ajijic, you are prime targets for people looking for cash, jewelry, automobiles, etc. and you must be more prudent now than ever, even in your home.
Love your outfit guys.
I was there in February and March checking if it was something to consider. Fell in love with Ajijic. People were so nice and I really felt the outskirts might be home someday. Made it back to Los Angeles in time for lockdown. I hope that things calm down and I can come back again soon. One crime doesn't make the entire place dangerous. Crime is unescapable. Thanks!
It's wasn't one, it was two. Also, these are very desperate times for many people and desperation drives ruthless crime, sadly.
I wouldn’t buy a house in Mexico, I’d rather be in Vietnam or Thailand and hopefully one day visit Philippines
Those are great places also.
you guys make a very nice couple. take care.
Do you have an email address? My parents lived in Ajijic over 50 years ago (and loved it) and made friends there in the Mexican community and I'm curious to know how the community has developed. Elliot Zashin
I think the Denge fever is much more miserable than covid19 for MOST people! Nobody wants to get sick for sure, but Mosquitos do carry a variety of things that can make us miserable even if its just the itchy welts right? I am happy to hear they are working to clear out the swampy areas . :D Regardless of all the political/violence going on in the world, at least when you wake up in the morning in Mexico you have the beautiful trees and flowers and the birds singing... the birds have no idea how lovely they sound! :D STAY POSITIVE!!! it means a lot to see you thriving where you are! Many of us feel a little stuck where we are during all of this political unrest and financial crisis. Any chance we have to be grateful .. it's good to keep going and keep smiling! Love Lorrie's smile!!
Thank you for taking the time for writing this comment Lori and I appreciate you very much.
Wellcare will reimburse you for international emergency and emergency hospitalization. We found full payment in Mexico was same or less than our insurance copay.
Thank you for the information
Thank for being so honest, so good to see you two💕 please be safe😍💕🙋🙏🙏💐
Thank you! Will do!
Crime it’s everywhere so idk why you’re so shocked about it you can move to Chicago and then tell me what place it’s worse
Chicago is not so bad!
When those type awful crimes occur it can be a breeding ground for a cartel trying to move in
I heard that there is already a Cartel in Ajijic 😐
Very informative video, as always. Sorry to hear about the crimes you mentioned in your area. Thank you 🙏 for everything that you and Lori do. Stay safe.
Condolences to the family. I appreciate your honesty.
Jerry any plans on Asia within the next year or two
I think our next major trip will be through South America and that's probably going to be a year from now.
It’s a new year since this video was made. Do you think it’s a good time now?
In a lot of ways it's about the same but more improvements seem to be happening year-by-year as an example the Mexican middle class is growing and their standard of living is increasing.
Thanks for sharing the realities. My condolences to the families and community. Is everything opened but people wear masks? I’m curious how businesses, the malacon, churches and outdoor life are being affected by c19
thank you jerry and laurie for helping the needy
Thank you for being a subscriber and it's our privilege to team up with the patrons to get back to the local Mexican families.
Stay safe my friends
Listen, my husband will be 84 in Jan. and shortly thereafter I'll be 79. We've been flying
back and fort and been in the casinos since they re-opened in May. As long as you
wear a mask you are safe. Now if you have other health conditions you better stay put.
So please, don't get people scared of flying. Airplanes are one of the safest places
because masks are required for EVERYBODY.
Unfortunately, Crime has Increase Everywhere

Sorry to hear about the restaurant owner .Ajijic is a small town so you will most likely hear about any type of crime.Crime in major US cities is awful. But like you said Jerry some people have nothing due to Covid-19 .So they robbed the Restaurant owner ,they didn't have to kill him. Just take the money and run.
So true
Another super video from you both, so well thought out and delivered, thankyou. So sad to hear about the crimes going on there though😥.
I'm sorry, but the best way to help the locals is TEACHING them a skill.
Free help will only condition them to wait for your hands out.
With that money you can pay an expat to give them ESL lessons(or french, german, Cantonese or any other askill). They will have another tool to prosper by themselves and when you are no longer there, they will be self sufficient individuals.
Just my opinion.
Wondering if the restaurant owner hot shot because he wouldn't pay the bribe for protection.
It was a busy, gourmet restaurant (read: cash business). Those are in danger ANY time there is genuine economic strife because they have a lot of cash on hand at night when they close (before they can deposit the cash in a bank)...bribe or not.
You guys are so cute and inspirational! So sad that violence is back in Ajijic again ;( . Dr.J
Yes, you've got that right !!! We just wish we could help everyone in need, but that's hard to do - so many in need. I think many people are under stress given Covid-19 and many people are at their wits end from not having resources. As in the USA, incomes are in decline during a period of hardship.
Great video as always Jerry. Perhaps one topic I would like to see is about the cost and logistics of shipping a container to Mexico. Not sure if you can recommend any particular agency in your area. Thanks and stay safe.
Great suggestion!
I love you two - such good people 🙂
When I heard you were using Patreon donations to support the local food banks, I just had to sign up.
Thank you for helping us to help people down there.
God bless ❤️

So sad to hear of the rise in crime in your part of the country and the death of the restaurant owner and others. My sympathy to all the families. It’s too bad Mexico 🇲🇽 does not have a social assistance program. It’s a terrible time across the globe. Please stay safe 💕
When someone try. To take the money. From any person. Give away. Because. Is very dangerous. If. Someone have gun. Of nife.
Ms Lori is so pretty with her hair up! And she has the best laugh! Love you guys🥰
Mr Fake Elvis on an expensive bike bless your heart
So sorry to hear about the tragic death of the restaurant owner. His family must be so traumatized. I will pray for them. God bless you Lori and Jerry.
Especially at this time of year they have to go through such a sad experience and the little girl seeing her father gone down she'll never be the same. So sad
Jocotepec is nice an cheaper still close to Ajijic and Guadalajara great information Jerry and lory
Great job you guys.may the good Lord bless you guys and your family.eat lots of fish and beans

Sorry to hear about the violence. Its always good to see you all. Thanks for sharing 👍
Myra did you realize it's already been one year since you subscribed. Thank you you're the greatest and keep doing what you do it's appreciated by all.
Starting to sound like Chicago and New York happens every day there
You can put your SSI into bit coin to make money
Thank-you for your helpful video and generous donation offering for the locals. Are there groups or organizations that you could recommend where one can make cash or material (e.g. clothes, shoes) donations that would go to area residents. Thanks again.
Yes and yes you can make a donation on our pateron.
Any money you contribute we will match it if you contribute five dollars we will throw in another five dollars so this way we have $10 to help the local Mexican people. Here's a link.

I'm asking the following question for a friend: She is in her 50s and on disability. Can she maintain her monthly disability payments in Mexico? Question from me: I'm looking for a safe, inexpensive, QUIET, beautiful, nature-oriented (rural but no more than 1/2 hour from mod sized city), town that has excellent, fast Internet access (for remote work), a progressive environment, and inexpensive homes for purchase. I'm also in my 50s.

I'm on Social Security myself, but I changed from straight Medicare to a Humana Medicare Advantage Plan that covers me world wide.
You might want to look into it.
I'm not 100% sure but I think that Humana covers only Emergency worldwide.
Thank you for a true report... appreciate it
Our pleasure!
Thank you for helping when your traveling
Any time!
Thanks Jerry and Lori
Not safe I am not maxican
I was going to ask about the vaccine time line in Mexico but you answered , it's coming there pretty much the same time line here unless you are a health care worker , first responder or in a nursing home - assisted living then that will be soon . Stay safe you two ! I love your videos :)
Thanks for the insurance tip. At my age I have had trouble getting a quote that included COVID coverage, so your tip helps me a lot.
You are good people. JMJ.
You guys are So Sweet, so Kind💖
Thank you for those kind words and happy holidays.
You can't escape crime as we live in a broken world. It is wise to be cautious.
There's always gonna be something going on in the world that's not in alignment with a peaceful environment.
thanksyou guys for the information.... and be safe...
Our pleasure!
Did they catch and arrest the person that shot the restaurant owner?
We haven't heard anything about that.
Mis bendiciones para todos ustedes, yes no welfare in Mexico.
Jerry - we’re a recently retired young ish couple that are traveling around Mexico. We’re currently in Guadalajara and visiting Ajijic tomorrow (Tuesday) for the day. Would love to buy you a socially distanced coffee if you and Lori are around.
Unfortunately Matthew I have a doctors appointment tomorrow and their day is booked. We would've loved to of met you.

Great candid advice!
Thank you. So, one is not able to purchase private health insurance after age 75?
75 years old is the cut off date and if you have existing conditions at any age you're not eligible for private medical insurance here in Mexico.
@@JerryBrownTravels wow! So what do for health insurance after I turn 75? Depend on my Medicare?
My next stop will be Afrika Jerry, swing by...
It's okay Jerry and Lori it happens to movie stars 😂🤣

The federal government gives scholarships to low income students. The government deposits a monthly amount into their personal account the students opened when they qualified. The same apply to the senior citizens.
What horrible news. I pray for him and his family. And also for your safety. At the same time I realize that isolated incidents can happen and do happen. It's just that this one is so close to home.
Place is too unstable and dangerous. Not worth the drama.
Jerry , is the fever down there spreading or just around the lake. And how many pesos make up a dollar? Thanks love your videos.

I've investigated moving to lakeside for some time. What can you tell me about living in the south shore of Chapala? Is it as safe as the north shore? Advantages, disadvantages? Restaurants, swimming pools, gyms. Thanks for your advice.
Answer this question in a video
So sorry to hear your safety is a bit sketchy around now....darn people that have no concern over others lives.
What a crock that medicare is taken from Social Security when person doesn’t even use it! My husband and I pay $148 a month now! That’s a lot of money !

Hi Jerry and Lori nice meeting you guys I am a Mexico and I live in tonala I just found your guys's Channel I did not hear about the two murders that you guys are talking about the restaurant owner from the guy that bought the car that is so scary that that happened I have been here for five years and have not experienced any crime besides her house to get broken into one time and they stoled are bicycles...
I think that is so nice that you guys are matching the donations on your patreon to help the people here in Mexico like you said they don't get any help from the government so it can be hard
I know what you mean about the crime overall we have not experienced it personally I guess because we're not out late, we don't go to bars, or pretty much homebodies.
We are so grateful to be able to help the poor families here in Mexico by providing them food, clothing etc.
The federal government is going to start vaccinations towards the end of December. The first in line are emergency and government workers (doctors, nurses, the army, and others).
The date set was December 17, not the end of December. They started even before then.
How do U pay rent without a bank account?
Cash to the landlord
Check out the video one more time and I answered that. You take money of your bank using your debit card and then you pay your monthly expenses that of course includes rent.
@@JerryBrownTravels I would like to have proof of payment other than giving cash....
I live in Puerto Vallarta half the year and Canada the other half, and prefer to own in Canada and rent in PV, and I pay rent with an e mail transfer which is easy to do, you have a record of it and it gets paid instantly from your computer
Is it the little restaurant on the corner open air type with family home above where owner was shot. I was in Ajijic a couple of years ago and ate there many times? Don’t recall name
That is not the restaurant this one is on the bypass Road going to Chapala.
Thank you for sharing, you answered most of my questions.
Is rent in Mexico paid month by month? Or do you need to pay up front for an extended stay?
Good question I'll have to answer this one on a video also.
When you rent a house here you pay the first month rent the last months rent and a security deposit typically the same amount as your rent for each one of those . You pay that initial amount upfront and then after you pay monthly and you pay it in Mexican pesos.
Medicare Advantage is accepted at the San Antonio Hospital.
They will only except Medicare if it is an emergency. If you break your foot or arm that's an emergency. But if you have dengue fever that's not an emergency.
Restaurant owner that got shot in ajijic was it a Mex pat or was it a Mexican citizen
The owner, his wife and daughter are Mexican and residents here at Lakeside.

Is Mazatlan a safe area to live?
The resort areas are generally safe because the cartel or the bad guys are not targeting tourist to basically gang against gang warfare
