I was never homeschooled, and I truly believe that because of public school, I became so painfully shy. Due to the constant bullying I'd encounter. It just got to a point where I thought, "maybe if I sit in the back and not say anything no one will even notice me to make fun of me." How sad is that?

Same! Now 8 years after highschool, I feel like I am finally finding my true personality which was buried under all the coping mechanisms I had from public school.
Three years ago I took a personality test which said that I was extroverted. I was stunned because I thought of myself as shy, but it was really just a coping mechanism for surviving 7 hours a day of public school...

I was homeschooled until I was 16, at which time I started to attend a community college with dual credit. I graduated “high-school” with 2 associates degrees. I now have an engineering degree at 21. I don’t know if I would have been able to excel the way I did academically if I was not homeschooled, but I am doubtful.

My brother and I along with our cousins all did the same thing. Get the state to pay for college as well. Ok, we paid for books and a tiny fee per class but effectively free. 2 years of college free... Everyone should do it. Everyone is retarded in life by "public school". USC is what? $70,000/year now? The College I went to get my mechanical engineering degree is now almost $30k/yr... That is $60,000 I did go into debt that all my peers DID go into debt and are now handicapped in life.

I also graduated high school with my associate's degree, because of dual CC enrollment. I eventually got my bachelor's at 20. I attended one of the top public school districts in the country and I know I wouldn't be successful if I hadn't received such a quality public education. Also, the networking opportunities that came from attending such a prestigious school district still help me at my current sales job

Homeschooling doesn't make kids weird. Kids are weird because of personality, isolation, or unhealthy homes. Same as public schoolers--- there is no shortage of weird, awkward, lonely, or anti social public schoolers.

Honestly, I'm tired of the word weird. Allistic people can have drug addictions, behavioral issues, personality issues, or risky sexual development.
Many of those kids can shift from multiple fake personality traits and at a glance, people won't call them weird. A lot of "WEIRD" home school kids were likely neurodivergent and acted maybe 2 years younger compared to teenagers trying to act like adults or even go get high.
I saw some "weird" homeschooling kids but I also saw "normal" allistic kids that snuck out every night. Ffs.

I was homeschooled for 7 years and then went to public school for my last 2 years of high school. I was amazed at how many awkward kids were there. Also, it is odd to me how “normal socialization” means that teenagers don’t know how to talk to adults and people outside of their group of friends. I’m ok with being different than that.

    • @cassienelson7134
      @cassienelson7134 Рік тому

Right? Practically every teenager these days describes themselves as having "social anxiety" and mental health issues, they say they can't talk on the phone, can't order a pizza, can't make a doctor's appointment, don't want to knock on the door when they get to their friend's house, and have much of their communication via text or online rather than face-to-face. That's just what I've heard from gen Z kids themselves. This whole idea that all homeschoolers are "socially awkward" is such a lame stereotyping cop-out. If "socially awkward" means that kids are intelligent, well spoken, use proper grammar instead of slang, have unique interests, carry on conversations with adults and don't know much about pop culture... I'm very happy to sign my kids up for that.

One of the reasons homeschoolers seem “weird” is simply because their innocence hasn’t been robbed to the extent of public schoolers. When I was in public school, raunchy language, promiscuous lifestyles, school fights, and recreational weed smoking were just the norms of the kids around me. The homeschool kids in youth group were a breath of fresh air, their jokes were clean, and they were just all around wholesome folks who your parents trusted you hanging out with.

Our youth group had the horniest kids in school tbf it was a religios school to begin with. Lol homeschooling sounds like a decent choice I think it's funny the left thinks the right is turning schools into pseudo churches and the right thinks universities are indoctrination machines instead of assuming the most likely result people aren't as smart as they'd like to think and they're easy to socially engineer. Hate to say it but far left and far right are the closest points on the political spectrum simply because they wrap in on themselves why do you think reverse radicalized is such a common outcome for the super believers. It's not more rational its perspective shifts though a combination of newly present information paired with your personal history anything beyond that in your understanding of how you rationalize is a fabrication to protect your ego.

    • @AlmaDeAngel
      @AlmaDeAngel Рік тому +39

@@tlz124 Personally I don’t believe the sooner you take the innocence of a child away the better. Just because they weren’t forcefully introduced to disgusting behavior at a young age doesn’t mean they will be oblivious to it when they grow up and become adults. They will see these behaviors later on in life and contrary to the public school kids who see it as normal, the homeschool kids will see it as what it is .. not normal, while still acknowledging that it exists.
Ps: I’m talking from experience as a kid who was homeschooled.

I was public schooled in the 90s/2000s. The quality of public education is drastically falling. After having children, we decided to start homeschooling, and I would say we have a more active social life than the average public schooled kid. My kids interact with multiple generations in a variety of settings, not just kids their own age in the same room everyday. And pretty much all of the homeschoolers I know are very accomplished in academics and life skills, internships, etc. We love being homeschoolers- my kids and I. I am continually learning new things everyday, even though I have a Masters Degree myself. Learning is a lifelong pursuit.

Oh my goodness! I'm the same exact way! I was also public schooled in the 90s/2000s and had even gotten my Master's degree. But I chose to stay home and homeschool my children. I like not being confined to a rigid schedule and then being away from my kids for long hours of the day. There's just so much flexibility and freedom with homeschooling. My kids are still young but they usually spend an hour and a half on core subjects (i.e. math, reading, and language arts) and then we have the rest of the day for play, exploring, discovering, creating, developing, and learning new things. I've recently had a conversation with a friend about raising wild and free kids, she jokingly said "oh, like free-range?" And that was my Aha moment about how I want to do homeschooling--reclaiming childhood, fostering a world of wonder and joy of learning.

Same story here. Honestly homeschooling wasn’t on our radar before kids. Master of Education here as well.
We were looser with academics in the younger years and they played and weren’t forced into a learning box that they must read so many words by a certain age for example, or else they are “failing.”
Somehow by God’s grace when mine make it to middle/high school they are still able to take regular classes with teachers and do college work. One of my oldest has moved several states away for college and is THRIVING. All As with a double major.
She was at dance academy 5-6 days a week and other social activities.
The siblings have such amazing connections from growing up that way & I’m so grateful for the relationships my husband and I are able to have with each of our 5 kids.
Homeschooling was weird in the late 80s/early 90s. There were very few doing it. Those were the trailblazers.
As we have home educated for 17 years so far the acceptance has increased dynamically in that time, and opportunities increased in communities and universities for these students.
Also since the pandemic more people in general feel like they have “homeschooled” and put the majority of us in camaraderie on the subject.

@@friedawells6860 I see that she didn't answer your question, so I believe that I can do that. I'm a 16 year old and I'm homeschooled. I volunteer once a week at a hospital, sometimes more days if I have availability. Let them explore volunteering places that have to do with their interests. Ask them if they wanna shadow a professional. The way to get us involved is to introduce opportunities that we'd be interested. But none of that will happen unless you follow step one: MAKE SURE they are not on screens all day. Try reducing that. It's really hard to rip teenagers away from phones these days, especially tween/teenage boys and video games.
Also try joining some homeschool co-ops. They often have activities with learning mixed with fun/socialization. Go on field trips with other homeschooled friends.

She hit the nail on the head. Homeschooling comes down to freedom and flexibility. You get to choose your own adventure with your kids so it can be as great or as terrible as you want to make it (kind of like real life) but the reality is that public and private schools are the same. Also, there are FAR more resources for homeschoolers today than there were 10 or 20 years ago so in many ways it has never been a BETTER time to homeschool than today. For my family, with the rapidly declining quality of institutional education even at "good" schools, homeschooling is a no brainer!

I was 15yo for my first "real" job. In my high-school years, we traveled to over 30 states and learned how to balance a checkbook, cook, plant a garden, shoot and skin deer and squirrels for food, I can gut a chicken blindfolded and I know how to defend myself. My parents made sure we were part of a homeschool group that met weekly so we would get socialized. We did community service projects to give back to society. My husband (also homeschooled and proud Marine veteran) and I are debt free aside from our home and we are expecting our 4th child and he is finishing his bachelor's degree. Life is great! ❤I'm so thankful for having had the opportunity to go to public school, a private school and finally homeschooling and we are homeschooling our own kids with amazing results. Thank you for saying that it comes down to parenting. I am a public school teacher, but I will definitely consider homeschooling for my family. As a teacher I see a lot of lonely kids in school. The lack of engagement, support, and quality time at home is evident. It’s really sad to see young people struggling. Brett’s experience with homeschooling sounds ideal. It’s because of her parents that she had so many opportunities and valuable learning experiences.

I was homeschooled all twelve years. I love it. My mom was homeschooling for 30 years straight because of the age gaps with my 5 siblings (my mom and dad ROCK!).
If I was public-schooled my twin sister and I agree we wouldn’t be as close because as teenagers she wanted to «fit in » more while I decided I would be different no matter what (much to her chagrin).
My husband and I will be homeschooling our son and I am determined to teach him to be himself even if it looks different than others.

We homeschool our 4 kids. I would say things have changed so much since I was a kid. Parents dont discipline at home and therefore teachers at schools are left managing outbursts, lack of self-control, lack of obedience(even just asking a child to finish a worksheet), kids are ripping things off walls, pulling kids pants down, kicking the teacher, mocking, rude, swearing at the teacher etc-in every class. The kids who come to learn are left to just put up with all of this awful behaviour. We wonder why kids cant read by grade 6. Its brutal-I think the majority of classes have completely inappropriate behaviour daily.

Homeschooling can be a benefit or a detriment depending on many factors. For example- how mainstream it is in your community, amount of resources and support system available, flexibility and involvement of parents to name a few. I have been homeschooling our kids for 13 years. We take it year by year and now have 2 kids in public and homeschool 2 kids at home. Homeschooling can not only help a child who excels at school to be able to learn at their own pace, but it also has helped our kids that struggle more with certain school subjects to have individual attention that public and private school couldn’t provide.
Famous homeschoolers include: many of our countries past presidents, Supreme Court justices, Albert Einstein, Mozart, and Taylor Swift to name just a few.

I’ve met so many wonderful kids from homeschool and they’re so passionate about what they love, and one of them was so secure in herself and she is great. She has more time to research what she likes and do the things she loves such as volunteering, being dual enrolled in a course she likes, and helping out with a program and stuff. She is not shy at all and I wish I could be like that. I feel like it gives kids more freedom as long as they still get out and socialize in the real world. Because to be honest the school system is not for everyone and kids stay up late destroying their health just to reach deadlines and then wake up early. But homeschooling has the potential to nurture instead of crush health, creativity, happiness and passion. Maybe it’s just my bias because I want to do something other than be at school (not that I’m ungrateful because I go to a good private school), it’s just, I feel like I want to do something else and I feel I don’t fit in even though I’m not technically alone alone. But I don’t know much, I have good AP classes but I think I could do that online if it’s comes to that case, but the problem is what I want to chase will also be hard as well. Thing is I know I’d never be allowed to drop out of in high school for homeschool. Maybe I’m scared of being bold and telling my mom that without a plan, but I’m just hurting more than happy. I don’t know if I quit and went homeschool, if I’d have the guts to chase what I want anyway rather than just staying home playing all day. I just want to do what I love right now and try new things but I don’t know. I feel so suppressed by standards and expectations and stuff, I don’t know. Because of that I actually have a harder time with people because insecurity about being around others in school and opinions has crushed it, and there seems to be an expectation in in-person school (maybe peer pressure that is so hard to deal with). I don’t feel like I vibe with the people at school because I just don’t relate much to them, I don’t watch you’re tiktoks I’m not into the latest school drama, grades and deadlines seem horrible and everyone is always freaking out about it, being so afraid to make a mistake and be yourself (maybe it’s just my trust issues from something). But I just, I want to be more, I want to be myself and I want to find my people and have a place where I can feel like I can let loose (I feel like I’ve literally lost my humor as I became more scared of judgement). I kind of wish I could be homeschooled so I could act, volunteer more, sing, dance, have fun with friends, instead of doing 7 hours of homework everyday having no life.

As a parent of 14 children, all homeschooled, I can say without reservation that homeschooling does not make children weird or awkward. Not to brag, but everyone who meets and interacts with my kids for more than ten minutes comes comes away impressed at their maturity, their ease at dealing with new people and being able to bring other kids along and integrate them into their group. They naturally speak 2:05 well and interact with everyone, from small children to the elderly.
I can say that without bragging, because the same is largely true of all their friends; a group of about 50 kids who are all homeschooled. Growing up in the late 80’s and early 90’s, I would have killed for a friend group like this one.

In two years and half, my oldest graduated with a HS diploma and Associates degree in Computer Science. He is now completing his bachelors in Computer Engineering at top state school with a full scholarship. Next, my daughter will be graduating soon with her a HS diploma and Associates degree in Accounting. We are looking at schools willing to give her a full ride. Homeschooling isn't for everyone. But, it is a viable option for parents who want to ensure their kids are going to thrive.

I honestly would have opted to study at home than be around other kids. I attended brick-and-mortar from Kindergarten thru University. That said, my husband is the same thing - socially awkward. Our kids don’t stand a chance. I still decided to homeschool them because it is my own wish for myself for various reasons. We finished year 4 and they all (3 kids) still choose to be homeschooled. I agree with all the benefits and am glad that many students have parents who can do that for them. So many students do not have parents that can homeschool them. Sometimes, going to school is the only way they (the students) can get respite from home. Let's face it. So many adults did not do well when they were in school. They just don't have the skills, ambition, or discipline to homeschool their children. I believe home schooling may be more prevalent in the future but I also hope the public schools can, somehow, pull it together so the rest of the population can also have a good education.

Their dad is super into the outdoors, survival stuff and building stuff in nature and all that. The FOUR and SIX year old know how to start a fire by themselves, most adults don’t know how to do that. And they’re actually really lovely and super sociable, they still get to play with other kids all the time. And they’re always outdoors, probably have never touched a device, they’re always outside on the beach and woods, they’re literally not afraid of any kinds of sea creatures or bugs. And they get to be with their parents all the time, and the dad gets to teach them all of these super cool survival skills, you can learn so much outdoors that you can never learn in school. In school kids pick up all sorts of bad behaviours, they’ll eventually end up being exposed to all that, but at least they get to have a great childhood.

Shouldn’t she have spent a mostly equal time learning? 2. When I get homeschooled kids in the classroom, 99% of them are VERY behind academically - often by years. I believe that homeschooling can be done well, but most don’t succeed….

I was talking to a mom that is kids have been in public schools until this year. She said her kid was going to be weird no matter what. It’s just who he is. The quirky things my kids do are just who they are and it isn’t squashed out of them because they don’t have a desire to act like their peers.

If "weird" is being comfortable in your own skin and not being depressed because you're always trying to be like everyone else, then yeah most homeschoolers are weird and happy. What is weird is that people are afraid of that lol

What's wrong with being weird? If weird means unique and motivated and accomplishing things at an early age, then I'll take it. Being normal like many public school kids in the United States is not what I aspire my kids to be like. I was a public school teacher, I went to public school and researched where our public school system came from and what it was meant to do to our children's minds. F that!

Sounds like being homeschooled as a rich kid is where it’s at…like other comments I can not be a proponent of how I was homeschooled. I would like to potentially try to homeschool my daughter in a completely different way than what I experienced, but money and time in the parents department absolutely matters.

Options for homeschooling today are completely different than when I was younger. In fact there are a ton of wonderful free programs that can be utilized as well. With homeschooling on the rise I'm even more encouraged by the possibilities to empower families to find excellent educational opportunities for their kids.

There are free resources out there. The library is a great start, outdoor nature walks, counting rocks or sticks, and thrifstore finds for close to free. Ask your church to help fund your family.

This approach will only be effective if parents can contribute significant experiences to their child's life. For parents who lack knowledge, lack understanding of culture, lack of financial education, lack of social connections, and lack of personal achievements, it is advisable to send their children to school.

I have a friend who's wife homeschools both their daughters. His oldest just went to college. By the time she was finished "high school", she had also completed college courses, gotten a black belt, joined the civil air patrol and gotten her pilot's license. And she worked as well. She's light years ahead of most kids her age who just cruise through high school and skip off to college. It's not for everyone, and results seem to come down to the environment. Kind of like adults who work from home.

Adult that was homeschooled here. There's nothing wrong with homeschooling if you have a parent who's an active participant. Also, keeping the child involved in group activities with other kids is a must. Like scouts/sports/etc.
I should mention I start public school late in the 10th grade. I made friends, but the environment was not conducive for learning, or critical thought.

I hundred percent agree with Brett when she says that you need to give your kid freedom (monitered at first, yes, but a parent who gives them a bit of freedom) so that they can live a bit in the real world. I was homeschooled and my Dad trusts me like nobodys business because he gave me the freedom to go out and work hard all through HS but he could do that because he had seen me work through tough issues myself and trusted me to make my own choices with his guidance AND I go to him and ask him for his guidance because i mutually trust his advice and wisdom. Also I worked really hard academically and just graduated from college but only had to pay for less than two years because I was given four scholarships (one of which was half tuition) so yeah, homeschoolers can be smart, work incredibly hard (see results) and become good members of society. Also Im an extrovert who has no problem making friends and connecting with new people.

I first encountered homeschooling on UA-cam. now i read many people's comments as i read your comment. Nobody knows homeschooling in our country. Also, it is forbidden in our country not to send your child to school. can i get more information from you?

I’d say families were more trustful of teachers back in the day because either they knew the teacher or it was assumed that school system wouldn’t hire somebody that holds values completely contrary to their own. That’s definitely not the case now.

I think they need to revamp the curriculum entirely to make it so that people are better prepared for the real world. Like you don't even need calculus (even though I made an A) just a class on math of how to file taxes or what to say in an interview and etc. It's like why go to school when the stuff that is important in life you have to learn from your parents which defeats the purpose.

  • @Qyr3
    @Qyr3 Рік тому +1

Why is flexibility and freedom a reason, to get bad lessons? Parents are not educated to transmit and explain knowledge. Some teachers are bad of course, but that does not mean that teachers are worse at transmitting knowledge. Another thing is most parents have no idea of the school stuff which people have to learn, and lots are even not intelligent enough to convey knowledge. Either because they dont understand the tasks themselves or because they are lacking technique to make their child really learn the stuff.

I know so many public schooled kids that have terrible communication skills and behavioural issues. My older 2 kids went to public school before we decided to homeschool and they are completely different to my youngest who never went to public school. Our youngest has excellent communication skills, can talk to anyone about anything and is super intelligent well beyond his years. My eldest 2 have some communication issues, get nervous and show signs of anxiety. They also have some trauma around education. My eldest has severe anxiety over maths because when he was at school he was always considered 'behind' and was often kept back to do extra maths work. Homeschooling your kids definitely doesn't make them weird. My kids are so much happier now that they are homeschooled and have come so far academically. They have very social lives playing sports etc and have so much more time to focus on things they are passionate about. :)

All public school "socialization" did for me was years of bullying, name-calling, inability to be heard or have my learning needs met.
"Slowly I began to realize that the bells and the confinement, the crazy sequences, the age segregation, the lack of privacy, the constant surveillance, and all the rest of the national curriculum of schooling were designed exactly as if someone had set out to _prevent_ children from learning how to think and act, to coax them into addiction and dependent behavior.... I no longer felt comfortable defining my work as teaching things they need to know to a struggling classroom audience. There wasn't any class at all in reality, only individuals being shoehorned into one ugly boot that fit no one."
    - "The Seven-Lesson School Teacher" by John Taylor Gatto
And this was before public schools went full-tilt Anti White. Now kids like me would have to contend with all of the above, plus being psychologically maimed, gaslit, and become objects of hate by the never-ending diversity around them, and their increasingly violent results.

I'm a university professor and I have certainly taught students who were home schooled. I have also taught students who went to private Christian high schools. I have always felt sorry for them: their breadth and depth of knowledge is so much greater than their public school colleagues that they become bored. It gets worse every year because I must continually simplify my lectures in order to keep the Dean happy. I now teach senior science courses that lack the technical sophistication that I experienced in high school.

I went to a private Christian school from kindergarten all the way through college. I’m obviously biased, but I think this is the best middle ground. My mom was a helicopter mom, so I know if I’d been homeschooled, I probably never would have left the house. But on the other hand, I’m thankful that I didn’t go to a public school either, since I’ve seen and heard the horror stories of what these government funded schools are teaching. With private schools, the parents get to make an informed decision by researching different schools, meeting with the staff, and making sure they aren’t teaching political propaganda to the kids. And if they do start teaching these things, the parents can pull the kids out of that school and either choose another school or homeschool. The only downside is that private schools can be super expensive, so homeschooling is certainly is a better option than most public schools.
