As far as painting goes, I am at whatever level is before beginner (!) and have never felt I was “artistic” in any way. But since retiring I have become interested in exploring the possibility that I can learn some artistic skills and have started drawing and doing watercolor painting. I am enjoying it so much! This video was very useful to me and I am going to try these techniques. Thank you.
I have been exploring this type of watercolor painting recently. I really love it because I have to move quickly and make decisions on the fly. This has kept me from overworking my paintings. It has also allowed me to let go of the fear of messing up my painting. This style of painting rewards the mess. Loosening up my painting has allowed me to enjoy the process so much more than I did previously. Thank you for the great tips and for showing two examples of the same subject. That really helped me visualize the process. The possibilities are endless.
I agree that not feeling scared and (almost) not caring if the painting turns out or not is very liberating and always gives better results. Thank you so much for watching the video and your comment!
Love your loose painting its exactly what i was looking for. I just purchased watercolor supplies so that i could start painting. This is going to be a new hobby for me and loose painting looks easier then everything I’ve seen on UA-cam. Thank you for sharing, looking forward to more loose paintings.
Thank you for teaching such freedom in watercolor, they both are lovely. Sometimes we get hung up on the rules of the art and forget to paint with the heart, where true beauty comes from.
I love the loose style of watercolour, and you have achieved a better result than I've seen most other artists manage. I have returned to watercolours after many years and am now investigating this freeing type of watercolour. But I lean towards much more dream-like work than I've been able to find others doing - except you. Well done.
The one on the right was my favorite. Id love more videos on loose painting. Maybe even a tutorial on how you approach a reference photo and decide to paint loosely. Such as which elements you fade into the background which ones you accentuate. Im trying to get better at loose painting
I appreciate your comment, Grayson, I did another flower painting in the loose style and was debating whether to post it or not. You gave me a great idea for the main topic for it! It should come out August 28th.
You are the best watercolor instructor on you tube! I have learned more watching your videos over last few days than any class or other on line instructional content! Thank you
Great video Ksenia! Thank you. I like the second painting better. I love loose watercolours and think it will take me time to learn and develop my own work this way, but I think it really allows the nature of watercolour paint to be forefronted.
I prefer loose watercolor style. Colors moving and mixing on the paper. I’m not so much a flower/landscape person. I like people, buildings, villages, boats, umbrellas, old farm equip. I really want to try to paint boots or high top sneakers. Thanks for the video lesson, Ksenia.
Nice technique 👌. I like the one on the right. I would like to give this a try. You're narration and demonstration was easy to follow. Thank you for sharing your talent!
I preferred the second background. I like your video because you explained a lot as you painted. I will keep my eyes open for mire if your videos. Thank you.
Great instruction on loose watercolor techniques. Thanks for the tips. Both paintings are very pleasing. A slight nod to the first one as I think the background is just a tad more interesting from my viewpoint.
I like this style, with many impulsive decisions to create something so beautiful, which comes from pure spontaneity. When I paint, I prefer not to overthink and let my intuition dominate. Thank you for sharing! ❤🙏
I learned 5 things today. I have been painting only a few months and have gotten less loose as opposed to more loose so this is very helpful for me. Thank you!
Wonderful, Sue, glad I could help a little! I was very tight painter when I started with watercolor, it takes a bit of adjustment, it's very different from other mediums like oil or acrylics. Good luck!
I think I like the second one better. But both are lovely. I find working loosely so difficult. I've painted for almost 30 years and have tried many times. And when I do finally get aittle loose my work is better.
I usually paint on 6x8" and it is lose. This way I can finish quick. Loseness is defined by defining shapes when it is still wet. In a lose painting you are not filling in a drawing. A beginner can easily get intimidated if they start on a large paper and use a large brush loaded with pigment. A beginner should start small and wet. Your points are good. But I thought clarification was needed for a novice. Create shapes when it is still wet..and you got it.
Dinesh, I agree with your clarification. Large format can be too intimidating for a beginner. But at some point we've got to be brave and venture out of our comfort zone, right? :)
I normally do not paint in a loose style, but this video may just get me to try it out. I still somewhat of a control freak so going loose will take some mental effort on my part. I did like both paintings, but the first one is my favorite. Thanks for the demonstration.
You are welcome, Robert, I'm glad you found this technique intriguing. I think also combining a loose approach with more controlled areas can be very successful.
Really beautiful. I can't pick a favorite. What I think about loose watercolor is that it ain't easy being easy! Loose, for me, is much harder than detailed. You really have to have a good grasp of techniques and color theory and what looks good where. Like you said, hard edges with soft edges and 'lost and found' edges, etc. Beautiful style!
Absolutely Gorgeous! I love loose painting or abstracts. This creation is stunning. Love the vivid colors, techniques, and your generosity in sharing, as well as your expertise. I love both of your paintings. 😘👍💖🎨🌷
Thank you, very nice...I am fairly new to watercolour, I like your style. I think I preferred the 2nd. Painting....very similar. I would have liked the flowers a brighter pink as was the reference photo.🤗
I am so happy I've just located you here on UA-cam. I am fairly new to watercolor and I definitely ride the struggle bus when it comes to painting loosely. I will ATTEMPT to try this. Thank you and I look forward to watching more of your videos.
I love this style of painting and am happy to have subscribed to learn more. You asked which one we like better of the 2 and I like the first one. Not to to say the second one isn't beautiful. Looking forward to explore more loose painting. Thank you
I loved both of the paintings and I love loose watercolor painting too. I'm new to painting, less then 1yr. You're one of the few artist's who can talk and paint! That was great for learning. Thank you I look forward to learning from more of your work
Thank you so much, Diane! I can't talk and paint, I add explanation after the painting is done! :) I know it's very hard to understand what an artist is doing so I feel a certain amount of commentary is necessary for the video to be useful to people. Good luck with your art!
The one on the right is my favorite, but they are both beautiful. Thank you so much for your instruction. I enjoyed painting this several times, as I am just learning how to paint loose flowers. I really enjoyed allowing the paint to run and do its own thing. I am usually too controlled in my painting!
I love loose watercolors and have been watching many videos in an attempt to learn the style. Your video was very informative and your tips on how to achieve the effect were very helpful.
I love it! It's very inspiring. Loose watercolor paintings have me looking at the art much longer than I do with defined detail art. I find that quite enjoyable. Thank you for sharing. :)
Love your video, very inspiring. I'm a bit scared of trying, so am working on plucking up the courage. My natural self is too neat, and the lovely thing about loose painting is that it's not neat! I like the first painting a lot, but I do like the second better, it has a vibrancy about it.
Thank you for watching, Hazel, and for your kind comments. I definitely had to struggle with “I’m going to paint nice and neat piece” approach. I find that the mindset or the general attitude is the most important way to get away from that. Good luck with your art!
I like the second painting best, I prefer subdued colours. Both paintings are fantastic though. I really struggle to paint loose with watercolours and am going to try to follow your advise, thank you for posting this video
I am so glad I came across your tutorials. My favorite technique is loose style and I’m anxious to learn lots more. I have macular degeneration so it’s difficult to paint in small areas or in between lines. I have subscribed to your channel and look forward to following you. Thank you so much.
Lovely! I like the 2nd one better I think. I'm new to painting. A complete beginner. This style feels less intimidating and more accessible to me to try first. I cannot draw so maybe that is why it feels better. I'm excited to begin! Thank you for helping me make the first step.
Ksenia, loose painting is my referred style and I like to try and start with fresh paints to achieve high saturation of the first application. I am looking forward to your WASH class.
Jack, I know I hesitated at first to use fresh paint, but it definitely works better for large format paintings. I'm working on some exercises that we'll do in class to achieve better washes. :)
Thank you Ksenia. Lots of good tips, what I valued mostly was the one about different softnesses of edges, I had never thought about that. Will try it at my next session. :)

I appreciate seeing the reference photo as you’re painting, it helps a novice understand why you’re placing colors where you do.

You are very welcome! Thank you for watching and for leaving such a nice comment!
I like the first painting. Colors stronger. Nice job on both. Anxious to try. I think it is more difficult than you make it look.
I hope you give it a go, Peg, it's just paper! :) If you post on social media, please tag @tummyrubbstudio, I'd love to see your interpretation!
This was SO helpful! Thank you for doing two different ways to portray your work!
You're so welcome, Rachelle, I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

Love both versions.
I love loose painting
I like the second version best. It had more variety in the brushstrokes and shapes of the whites.
Thanks for this clear and detailed demo of your loose watercolor painting style. It was very helpful.
Glad it was helpful, Gwen, thank you for watching!
I love the top half of the first painting and the bottom half of the second haha . Nice to watch and listen thank you .
I know! I wish I could glue them together! 😁
Thank you 🙏🏼I prefer the left hand side painting. I like the softness in the background 😌
Thank you, Anya!
I love this example of loose watercolour I especially prefer the first painting but the second was is lovely too. Thankyou
Thank you for watching, Elizabeth!
I like the 2 one❤️🙏🏾👏🏾
I have a hard time painting loosely -- your video was very helpful! Thank you.
Glad it was helpful, Margo, thank you for watching!
You are the best watercolor instructor on you tube! I have learned more watching your videos over last few days than any class or other on line instructional content! Thank you
So happy to hear that, Larry! Thank you so much, you made my day!
Great video Ksenia! Thank you. I like the second painting better. I love loose watercolours and think it will take me time to learn and develop my own work this way, but I think it really allows the nature of watercolour paint to be forefronted.
Thank you, Michael, I agree! Watercolor has to flow freely! :)
You are very welcome, Sue! I love painting people too, I think I'll try loose watercolor style for portraits - thank you for the creative idea!
The second one my fav
I love the loose style of Watercolor painting. I think that each of your paintings have much visual interest. Looking forward to seeing more!
Thank you so much for watching, Kathy!

Beautiful! They are both nice. Since you wanted an opinion, I liked the first version.
Thank you! 😊

Thank you, Ted!

Both are so beautiful !!!
I like the second painting.
both are beautiful
