It's really weird that they actually made it so he surpassed Goku in the cell saga. Goku's way older and has been training/fighting constantly his entire life. It makes no sense how a kid that doesn't even like fighting could surpass him.

@djangus brownstone but hasn't Naruto been too popular too? Perhaps showing them together made them compare to each other before Gohan was a grown soldier and thus he didn't becoem that popular. Still having him absorbed at the end of the saga although he was kinda stronger than his dad was lame. Goku came back to being the winner and Gohan's fate as a character was doomed. He didn't get *any* power up in Super which was very dispappointing. Everybody got some, Goku (and Vegeta) got several. Hell, they even managed to make Roshi relevant. But Gohan? He was just trying to get back to the levels of the Buu saga. He had to sacrifice himself to beat the #3 of another team while Android 17 was the MVP. Oh, well...

I reckon it the writer didn't think it was a good idea, it probably wasn't a good idea.
It's also worth mentioning that Toriyama is described as a "discovery writer" meaning he'll often make up the story as he's writing it. This worked fine for him for years, but we see how it caught up with him in the Buu arc. All that to say this: it's possible he just didn't like writing about Gohan. That the character wasn't to passive to be a lead, but that he was to passive for TORIYAMA to make the lead.

there were only a few moments left that i feel were improved by his score - honestly the SSJ3 powerup against Buu is legit fucking awesome even against the original japanese score - but beyond that it's so dated these days

Gohan is essentially Slifer the Sky Dragon. His greatest strength is his greatest weakness. His emotions are an excellent gauge of his power. the angrier he is the more powerful he becomes. But most of his fights are where he is simply not that emotional or he calms down.

Sure, he was a villain early on in the series, but we never see him actually hit a defenseless woman at any time. You might have been able to say that about Pre-Namek Saga Vegeta as that version of him was pretty ruthless and he'd blow up entire planets including women and children, but the Vegeta we know here isn't the same person. He changed drastically, though it did take time.
Oh and I am calm. I'm just pointing out the flaw in your logic.

@@rdowg God ki is over rated in my opinion. Frieza, Jiren and Broly have taught us you don't need godki to be strong. Hell gas as well as some of the more recent antagonists didn't either. Its not even very interesting a concept neither. I do like Ultra instinct and UE forms though. They add a little more to the table with unique abilities. I'm more interested in them then ssgb.

sure. probably he would. but it is exactly bc he is gohan that he wont do that. he doesnt care about fighting the way goku and vegeta do. he steps up when he has to, but this is not his world.
and i think that is part of his strength. the parts of his personality that make him who he is and allowed him to surpass his limits back then is the same part that makes him not enjoy fighting. the benefits and drawbacks come as one package. you cant just take his strength and then switch out the rest of his personality. i mean, you can....but then it would not be gohan anymore.
thats one of the things the dragon ball super people never understood. gohan wants a peaceful life and family. the whole great saiyaman thing shows us that he is willing to fight - if it is necessary. he fights bc he wants to protect. for justice. amassing power doesnt have any value for him.
but again - i believe this is the reason he was able to transcend his limit against cell and buu. toriyama retconned the super saiyan transformation that way later on too. a saiyan has great capacity to become stronger and train. they are a warrior race. but the super saiyan transformation is unlocked through compassion and the will to protect.

My annoyance with Gohan is that, after all these years. That should have changed. We aren’t talking about a normal person. We’re talking about one of the 5 strongest mortals in the universe. Top 20 in the multiverses.
I understand his desire for peace. But to be so downright arrogant as to refuse to fight when you’re the only one that can is silly. Gohan of all people should understand that the world isn’t so nice as to leave you in peace. If you want peace you need the strength to protect it. After watching the good guys lose so much over the years, he should have known to at least preserve his strength
