  • In this episode, I explain what punishment means within the context of dog training and how it is wrongfully demonized and said to be ineffective by others in the industry while claiming that science supports this. SPOILER ALERT! Science does NOT support the claim. In fact, Science shows us that when punishment is used correctly in training, it works! While I am not advocating for more punishment in training, it is important to understand how to use it and that it can be beneficial if used correctly in conjunction with positive reinforcement. One of the biggest reasons that people are struggling with their dogs is because there is so much conflicting advice online. "you should never use punishment" and "punishment doesn't work" are lies, or at best, misinterpretations of the data. Here are the links to the two studies I referenced and the two books.

Of course! It’s necessary to clarify this topic. There’s too much confusion out there

We live on 6 acres behind us but a neighborhood before us. We have a heeler lab mix that struggles with the boundary. We have tried ecollars and we lock him in his kennel when he goes outside his boundary. He is very bright and thinks about wether or not to listen to us. When he comes back he goes straight into his kennel, knowing thats the punishment. How do you enforce boundaries? He's about 2 yrs old.

Yes. Good timing is very important! As well as appropriate mode of delivery, and appropriate intensity
