  • This recipe is easy and works really well. Serve it with some crabcakes to make a meal out of it!

An authentic New England clam “chowda” has to start with bacon. It is fried crisp and then removed to be added later. Then the chopped onions are cooked in the bacon renderings. I am a New Englander and my parents owned a seafood market. I find most recipes end up looking like potato soup rather than my beloved clam “chowda”.

Actually authentic New England clam chowder is started with salt pork as is Boston Baked Beans.

I'm a fellow New Englander. I totally agree with you. Did you ever put sage in chowda? Fresh sprigs of thyme, then remove before serving. Garnish with crispy bacon and parsley! And you definitely can't replace fresh celery with celery salt!!!! Lol.

Half and half cream makes a better version but this still looks good from this angle. Some folks use bacon fat as a starter for the onions and celery.

Question for anyone: would I ruin the chowder if I included some leftover mussels with the clams ?

I generally shake the flour and milk in a jar and then add to the mixture. No lump effect.

My only advice is add at the very least one bulb of Garlic. Not a clove lol. A bulb. Or at least ten cloves of garlic. Other than that looks good.
