I do not take part in the Contest, but I wanted to say.. I can’t express in words how grateful I am to you for all your videos. A long time ago, I started my comic but then I was inexperienced and impatient and made many mistakes. The world and story really grew in my head, but I didn’t think over everything and as a result I couldn’t draw my comic normally, I got stuck and I was more tormented than enjoyed the process. I even changed the style several times. But I could not just quit the project and did not know what to do. So I was looking on UA-cam for something that would help me. And then I got on your channel and watched a lot of videos (still keep watching =), especially when I need inspiration or an answer). And the things that I learned thanks to your tutorials and other videos really helped me figure it out and gave me the courage to just say goodbye to an unsuccessful attempt and start all over again. With new knowledge and inspiration. So now I am carefully thinking through everything, writing drafts, scripts, making reference sheets and getting ready to restart my comic. And now I really enjoy the process. So thank you very much for sharing your knowledge with us.

I colored my first too scenes but the file size i used to color them was 690×7000 and obviously by taking your advice i went to crop it and resize it on Croppy (it cropped in between of my drawings) and everything's cropped and good to go but when before posting I tried to check the preview button for pc and mobile and there were white lines in between of my charcaters faces, backgrounds that shows that it isn't one pic. I wanted to ask you to help me with this problem
690 is a little small. It should be at least 800. What kind of file did you upload to croppy? If uploaded something besides a jpg, try that. You can also try in your drawing program to increase the size of the canvas to 800. or you can increase the image size to 800. and try croppy again. Try both canvas and image size increases separately. Canvas size will add white around your images on the sides. Image size increase will make your artwork quality get slightly lower.
Yesss I used to work right to left (thought I was a Japanese manga artist for whatever reason😑). My mentor told me not to do that... because here in the US we read left to right lol awesome video!

This was so helpful!!! I have a question for the short story contest we must finish the story? Like an ending? And what does it mean that the winners comic will be added in the originals anthology ? Thanks for the video your videos help alot!!!
Glad it helps! Yes, your story needs an end. Whatever problem you introduced, you need to solve it or at least resolve it. It can't be something where you say come back and I'll finish the story in episodes 6-100. The story needs to be over on episode 3 or 4 or 5. And the originals anthology is something new. Guessing it's an online webtoon series with a bunch of different stories. may be printing it? Not sure really sure.

Thank so much for your videos to understand how to upload your comic to webtoon! I am trying to participate on the short contest too and your tips are GOLD! Thank you so much, just sub for support and for the content of course!
Very good and helpful video! I'd like to recommend a tool that I use a lot for my art and comic - Daz 3D. It's a very powerful and flexible software, and it's free. I use it to experiment with my composition and as a help for posing. Basically, you can put the figures and primitives (cubes, spheres, ...) where you need your characters and objects to be and then rotate the whole scene to pick the best angle. Perspective grid and primitives help you buid the environment correctly. There are a lot of other features, but for a comic it's enough to use these basics. Hope this will help anyone!
I'm participating in the contest and unlucky for me I have like 14 establishing shots before any drama starts. What is your advice in this situation? The panels are very highly detailed and follow the idea of someone travelling through carriage showing the entire journey before they actually reach a school which is going to be the real setting for the story. On the way we see a bunch of different environments from cities/villages/forests and open lands before we make it to the final establishing shot at the gates of a prestigious academy. What is your take in this?
Well, of course you need to be truthful to your own artistic vision. And I totally understand the idea behind showing all these places and the impact of the sheer volume of it. But if it were me, I'd ask myself, how important are these places? How much detail do they need? Can we show them from far away and just hint at what they are? There is a saying with comics "show don't tell." But sometimes, there are some complex ideas that are far too much work to draw, when single sentence would explain it "we traveled far, past many cities and many forests" So you just have to ask yourself what's important and also what's important to you. I don't know your script, but at surface value, I'd prolly edit back on the amount of estab shots and pepper with some narrative or dialogue. I love dialogue.
I have always wanted to try out in Webtoon, and I think this contest is a calling to stop being afraid. However, I am struggling to come up with a plot, do you have any tips on how to come up with ideas?
Go someplace quiet and sit there alone with no music or anything. Just be alone with only your thoughts to entertain you. Think about stuff you've experienced, stories your friends have told you, or just your own weird imagination. Or read news stories, science articles, summaries for Hallmark channel movies. Good luck!
I really wanted to participate in the contest but I'm not confident about my art style yet so I might start my first webtoon next year too. but this video is really helpful and great, thank u for sharing so many tips
Glad the video helped. I understand the hesitancy in starting a comic because of confidence in your style. But I'd suggest making a comic versus spending the rest of the year looking for your art style. If you make a comic now, you will learn how to make comics and get better at making comics. You'll also get better at drawing at the same time. You don't have to make a comic you really care about, just make some crappy short comics. If you goal is to make comics then make comics, even if they suck. Whatever you do, good luck.
Thank you so much for this video but i still have a question ! Is it necessary to draw using pc and other tools for a better comic? I really feel comfortable drawing with procreate on my ipad , i tried a lot to draw using clip paint studio but it causes me a lot of headache . Any tips for help plz?
Hi! It's not necessary because procreate and other drawing apps on Ipad or just any mobile device also have great tools so there are pro's and con's of every drawing app. Whichever you prefer is your choice. There are a lot of original creators that mostly use pc but they draw they're panels and pages out on paper before hand. You also have the other half who do traditional or just those who draw their panel and pages on paper and use their mobile device. Okay I'm basically saying that it doesn't matter if you want to do it on ipad or pc it takes skill for both so go for it. Also if you're just creating from iPad in procreate they usually just save it to a file and upload it on a computer/PC when it's done and upload but you can also do it from your device XD.
Hey, Walter :) I just discovered your channel and its GOLD! I wanted to make a comic and put it on webtoons (before i even knew how webtoons works) BUT now i see that the format is clearly different from classic comics...My question is: what do i do if i want to print my comic into a comic book but also publish is on webtoons? Do i need different formats? Im confused and scared of the webtoons format :(
Hi! I can't really help much with this one but you should look up the creator for lore Olympus! She has a comic out in stores for lore Olympus and I'm pretty sure I saw it in the same format as how she does her webcomic! Ofc you don't have to do it that way but if it's a comic just put it in any comic format and use the same in webtoon if you don't want confusion so if it didn't help also hope he replies he can probably give a better answer than me haha.
Oh thank you. This is so helpfullllll, you are really lovely. Anyway, I have a question and I hope someone will help me to get the answer cuz I am extremely confused rn. I intend to join the contest. As I read in the community policy, the second part which is content guidelines, it was written that I am not allowed to submit the work which contains abusive and violent content. My comic has a violent scenes, in which there is a group of students bullying his classmate. And then, in another scene, there is a man slaping on his wife's face ( domestic abuse ). Both scene are really short and just stay within 4 to 5 panels, they are used to describe the childhood and bad memory of main character. So does my comic violate the policy rules? thank you so much for your answer, luv ya 😘
Hey walter really thank you for all this invaluable content and tips, I can't appreciate you enough! This is my first time making a webtoon, it took me around a week to finish lineart, flatting and coloring 7 panels. I really want to streamlined and work on it faster, but those processes takes a long long time to finish, to the point I feel like I'll just give up. Do you have tips on how to draw and paint faster?
The best thing to do is look at your art and ask what you can simplfy. You just need to focus on telling the story first. The only way you can tell your story is if you finish it. So finishing is the most important, more important than the art. So can you do less color, maybe just a single color to separate shapes or characers? Can you simplfy the background, Just boxes instead of detailed buildings, abstract shapes instead of tress. Re-use panels, draw a characters head and just copy and past it, have a few different ones, different expressions. Draw less panels with more words per panel. Make the art as simple as possible, just with enough detail for the story. Good luck.
I wanted to clarify some rules for the contest. The 3-5 episodes must be about one story with a beginning, middle and end? For the 30+ panels for each episode- are the panels equivalent to one image that takes up the window - can you give an example? And once we enter in our story for the contest, are we allowed to continue to add on to the story - like a weekly update for a new episode or not?
A panel is just a moment of your story. Usually it is something that is contained inside panel borders. But it doesn't have to be. It's not just what fits on the screen. You could fit 5 panels on the screen if you wanted. Draw a person picking up the phone, that's a panel, putting the phone down, that's another panel. I think once the contest is over, you can do add to the comic if you want. the 3-5 episodes should be a single story and it should have a start, middle, end. You introduce a problem and you work to solve it and finally resolve it.
Looking for collaborations of any kind. Jack of all trades, master of none. Even some original musical scores that dont sound horrible. There is sound on webtoons or am I tripping?
Hi! I'm not a creator yet but I work with some actually also I've noticed in most webtoons especially with originals(most canvas creators also do this)they open a canvas and create it themselves not only that but the most used is a panel from the pages always the middle, end or just the one part you'd like to add. For example lore Olympus, my deepest secret, and midnight poppy land also have thumbnails that's a panel from the middle to end part of the story you'll definitely see it if you pay attention lol. Edit; After rereading your question 😅I don't know if you meant like thumbnail for each episode or just for your webcomic when you first start it because they ask for 2 thumbnails one horizontal and one vertical. But if you meant for each episode that's your answer if not I'll try to explain
You should be able to accomplish everything you need with most programs. Krita, Gimp, photoshop, clipstudio, medibang, affinity. Maybe not procreate because of lettering, so maybe would have to use two programs with procreate. If I had to suggest a single program to handle everything, I'd vote clipstudio. It's not free, but they have sales all the time and you can get it for 30 bucks or so. If you want free, people seem to love krita
I have a question about when to upload my webtoon, because i am confused if i upload them each week and it ends then people will go on and read other short stories and forget about mine, but if i upload late every episode people will lose interest inmy webtoon, can you advice me on when to post an episode which doesn't have alot of negative aspects.
There is no way to really tell for sure. There are possible pros and cons to each one. If you are doing 3 episodes, maybe release the first 2 to get people hooked and talking about what will happen in the last episode. If you are doing 4 or 5 episodes, maybe release 3 episodes so they get the "want to subscribe" notification. A lot of people seem to be doing only their first episode. I'd suggest looking at some of the other comics, see if you can find any that did more than 1. Read it and see how you feel about it. Are you happy they released 1 episode or all 3?
You can post to webtoon canvas and tapas if you want, no reason not to. I am not sure what you mean about seeing your comic in discover. If you put something on Webtoon and publish it, people will see it.
Walter Ostlie I've tried posting an episode long ago, but when I tried to search my series I couldn't even find it in discovery so do we have to post 4-5 episode so that our series can be seen on discovery?
hi Walter! I have a problem right now whether to post my short story competition even if it's over...i was unable to finish in time because of schoolwork. I mean what should I do... leave it alone or just post it even though it's over.:(
*Someone please help ;-;* I already have a webtoon story but its quite to long to post them in one episode.. would it be alright to cut them and place them as "episode 1 part 1" then "episode 1 part 2"??
Are you talking about for the short story? If you are, you can only have 5 episodes max. Webtoon episodes. So naming it "Ep 1 - p1", "Ep 1 - p2", "Ep 1 - p3" would be 3 webtoon episodes, not 1 episode with 3 parts. Outside of the short story contest though, you can name it however you like.
Hah. It seems I say a lot of stuff that I think is uplifting and inspiring and it tends to be taken the opposite of that ;-) I need to pay more attention on how I word things.
Do you think 2 months is not enough time to make a good short story? I discovered this contest yesterday and I want to submit for it but I'm not sure if I'll be able to finish it within 2 months.
2 months is all the time in the world and not enough time at all. I have a friend that just started his submission. He already finished writing and has started drawing it. So there is plenty of time, you just need to get a story and an art style that you can finish in that time frame. If that means making the story take place in the flat empty antarctic and drawing stick figures, do that. But yeah, if you want to do, go for it. It's not a lot of time, but there's is enough time.
You can start now. Just come up with a simplier story and art story that you can finish in two months. Don't make it really complicated with crazy environments and detailed vehicles. Think small, simple but powerful. Plan the comic for the amount of time you have and you will be able to finish it.
Hey Walter! I already commented in another video and thank you so much for your encouragement! My entry is called “Sincerely, Yours (H)” My author name is winter_ethereal. Thank you so much for the video as always!! It helps a lot! Thank you!! 😍
I want to do a comic but due to my mental health issues and bad set up I can't afford to fix, my drawing process is really slowed down. Anyone got any advices how to deal with this? Please don't be insensitive it's just making it worse.
I am sorry to hear that. That must be very hard. I hope you find a way to heal and wish you luck. As for making a comic, I will try to help, but I am not a medical professional and I don't know your issue, but I will try. The best advice I have is just draw a little every day. I know it can be hard to want to draw everyday, because it can feel pointless or like we're not good enough. I feel that myself. However, what I did was make a deal with my evil mean brain. I said "if I draw for 5 minutes, even crappy squiggles, I can not draw for the rest of the day and not feel defeated, feel proud of my work" You could even do 1 minute or 1 second. What I found was that, once I started drawing, I didn't want to stop. It's the starting that is hard. Good luck. I am here if you need help or have questions.

Walter, thank you for sharing all of your knowledge! Everything you say is so true. I went to film school so everything you talk about brings back all my memories and experiences in creating my short films. Although comics are little different (as it is not moving pictures) it's crazy how much of the same things are applied throughout all the different mediums (animation, film, comics/graphic novels etc.)
Thanks again, man! ~♥ You have great stuff. You're definitely underrated and deserve more subscribers.
Agreed. Good storytelling is good storytelling and it is pretty universal.
@@walterostlie °˖✧◝(⁰▿⁰)◜✧˖° Yes, Sir, it is. I have a long way to go with storytelling. It's definitely NOT one of my fortes. Haha! So I really appreciate your content as I feel like I'm back in school with my Professors (which were all awesome btw).

Walter Ostlie you bet i will! I am re- listening to all your videos to clear of my doubts🤣
I've seen a lot of people using daz3d to make comics not just for reference. Looks really cool. I'll have to check it out, thanks!
Love your videos, they're so helpful :3
realmente amo Ghost Bats me encanta todo, su guion, el dibujo, la paleta de colores.... eres un genio
Good luck!
Love love love this!
I used to be able to slap mini comics together without much thought, now, I wonder where all that creativity went. 😭
large scale shots are better for portraying something large like the scale of the shot itself suggests, maybe like planets colliding or something
@@walterostlie thank u so much! I will try doing so. watching ur videos really motivates me
Good information, Walter, thanks!
You also don't wanna jump immediately from an establishing shot to a close-up or something similar. That gets confusing, too.
Yes especially with a very distant shot, unless trying to do something dramatic.
Wow this video came at a great time thankkks!
Glad it helps. Let me know if you have any other questions!

I would say if you approach it in a thoughtful narrative and be respectful to those who have dealt with those issues, it will be okay.
Thank you for your guide
Good luck.
@@walterostlie thanks walter! This is really helpful
@@walterostlie thank you so much for the advice
Looking for collaborations of any kind. Jack of all trades, master of none. Even some original musical scores that dont sound horrible. There is sound on webtoons or am I tripping?
Original series have sound sometimes. Canvas comics don't have that feature. Good luck! Try penciljack.com or the comic collaboration subreddit.
@@walterostlie Just found your comic, looks extremely promising. Now I'm a subscriber.
Question: what are thumbnails and where do I find them? Do I open a blank canvas and make my own? Are they an exact replica of each panel?
If only I was subscribed to this channel or on Webtoon I could've known about the contest :(
Oh no. I am sure they will run another contest in the future, they've done a few.
@@walterostlie Thank you for telling me that, I feel relieved now.

Wow thank you!
No problem, let me know if you have any questions.
What platform should I use for drawing or does it not matter
You should be able to accomplish everything you need with most programs. Krita, Gimp, photoshop, clipstudio, medibang, affinity. Maybe not procreate because of lettering, so maybe would have to use two programs with procreate. If I had to suggest a single program to handle everything, I'd vote clipstudio. It's not free, but they have sales all the time and you can get it for 30 bucks or so. If you want free, people seem to love krita
Thank you
I have a question about when to upload my webtoon, because i am confused if i upload them each week and it ends then people will go on and read other short stories and forget about mine, but if i upload late every episode people will lose interest inmy webtoon, can you advice me on when to post an episode which doesn't have alot of negative aspects.
Can a Webtoon artist post their comic on tapas too? and can people see if we post one episode of our comic in discovery webtoon?
You can post to webtoon canvas and tapas if you want, no reason not to. I am not sure what you mean about seeing your comic in discover. If you put something on Webtoon and publish it, people will see it.
Walter Ostlie I've tried posting an episode long ago, but when I tried to search my series I couldn't even find it in discovery so do we have to post 4-5 episode so that our series can be seen on discovery?

I already have a webtoon story but its quite to long to post them in one episode.. would it be alright to cut them and place them as "episode 1 part 1" then "episode 1 part 2"??
Are you talking about for the short story? If you are, you can only have 5 episodes max. Webtoon episodes. So naming it "Ep 1 - p1", "Ep 1 - p2", "Ep 1 - p3" would be 3 webtoon episodes, not 1 episode with 3 parts. Outside of the short story contest though, you can name it however you like.

@@walterostlie No it's okay😂 it actually made me laugh
@@walterostlie ok I see, thank you! I'm going to try my hardest and finish this on time, thank you!
But WHAT app are you using to make the panels?
I feel like Clip Studio Paint is a great app for this, it was made for comics and has really helpful features that you cant find in other apps.
Just asking.. Is it okay if I start now.. Will I be able to finish? I have a story in mind but I'm afraid that I'm too late
You can start now. Just come up with a simplier story and art story that you can finish in two months. Don't make it really complicated with crazy environments and detailed vehicles. Think small, simple but powerful. Plan the comic for the amount of time you have and you will be able to finish it.

No siempre se trata de arte. Se trata de dar a tus lectores lo que quieren. También Lore Olympus ha estado haciendo cómics durante mucho tiempo, por lo que los lectores crecen y crecen.
