This is a personal pet peeve and wish other creators would take note: Leave some room from the top of the canvas. Some webtoons have an image, or text, right on the top and my phone (note 10) gets in the way of that. I also read an interesting technique where you highlight a comment at the end of each episode, make your readers feel special. Again wonderful advice! I can't wait to work on my webtoon again.
Excellent advice! I have seen a few Webtoons where they have an image at the very top and it can be hard to see. Leave a little gutter there. It's okay. :D
I started with one tip, and now I wrote a lil book (oops). Here are some of my tips for comic writing! 1. Beginner comic creators: focus on the story. Literally just forget about art; you can always redraw stuff later. 2. Also, something big I didn't realize about _my_ story was there was no initial "hook" in the beginning. There was a mystery, plus fun characters, and there was conflict, but the conflict didn't matter because I gave readers no context as to why they should care. There was no reason to root for my main character, Malazu, because I didn't give her an over-arching goal or need. Now I'm working on relaunching my comic, with one big fix: From the beginning, I'm giving my protagonist a goal. Instead of throwing your characters into random situations, give each character a need, and have those little conflicts tie into their need. For example, because of her background, my character Malazu has given up on trusting others and thinks she can only rely on herself to find happiness. Throughout the series, I'm going to show her grow and learn to trust others, thus eventually reaching her goal of living a happy life with confidence in herself and her relationships. 3. To help with character development, I actually have a formula for each character's growth. For each main character, write "[character name] starts out [adjective], but then learns [lesson/new behavior]." For example, "*Malazu* starts as *skeptical,* but learns *to be happy and trust others.*" Another example: My character Frieda doesn't trust herself. She always looks to others for answers because that's all that she has ever known. However, one day, when her tendency to follow others doesn't pan out the way she wants, she breaks down. She's forced to make a choice: what she's doing - following others' lead - isn't working anymore, so she can either keep hitting her head against the wall, or she must evolve and try something else. When she finally finds success, that reinforces the action she did that got her there. Show your characters trying things that challenge them and their beliefs/behavior. When they fail, show them trying a different approach until they succeed. This can either be good behavior (like learning to be considerate of others) or worse behavior (like becoming more aggressive to get your way). For a great example of episodic character growth, check out the TV series _Lucifer_ on Netflix. He learns a little lesson almost every episode, and his challenges are spelled out easily for audiences to understand. 4. I also have seasons planned out, with big character growth goals listed in each one. I break each season down into chapters (each chapter is like a TV episode), and each chapter is broken down into 4-page updates. Overall, start planning your story to be big and simple, then break those big ideas down into little steps that are digestible for your audience. Your audience will fall in love with the details, but stay with you for the grounded, plot-driven story. 5. My biggest pet peeve: Make your characters' decisions align with their need. I find it distracting when a character acts one way in one scene, then differently in another (I'm looking at you, Yellow Diamond from Steven Universe). Characters are driven by needs, and who they are is determined by their actions. No character is a bully "just to be a bully." Why do they act out? Are they jealous? Are they treated poorly at home? You don't need a huge backstory for each character, just list a character's overall need, maybe how they got there, and how they are (or aren't) going to grow to satisfy that need or complete their goal. Also, if you want to arrive at a specific destination/situation in your story, think about what logically has to happen for your characters to get there. Example: I want my characters to have a fun mall episode. Why? Malazu needs clothes because she doesn't own any, Frieda tags along to pay for things, and Carrie goes along too because she wants to support her friend Malazu. These reasons all make sense and align with their needs. Gosh this was kind of a lot. I hope some of you reading this find it helpful! Thanks and have an awesome day. :)
Oh gosh I forgot I wrote this 😅 My character examples are from my comic Blue Witch Malazu, which I am still reworking. In the mean time, read my other Webtoon comics “Now and Forever Nia” or “Locks of White.” Thanks for reading, and happy creating!
That's the dream, seeing these stories grow pass what I can do on my own would be amazing. That's like the baby bird learning to fly and leaving the nest.
Pet peeve of mine is when an artist puts the last 1/3 of the panels of the previous page onto the next one as some weird way to either rehash the events or make it seem longer than it is. I don't care how good your comic is, I don't wanna keep seeing the same panels over and over. If I don't remember what happened then I'll just reread the last pages. I've quit reading comics when they do this too much.
Yeah, sometimes it makes sense, but you can definitely feel when they are just trying to extend the length of the episode. I agree, in general, it should be rare and maybe a panel at most.
Wow- I'm glad I read this! I've never liked these either, but every other comic I read has them so I was starting to feel it was obligatory. Been trying to come up with a way to add them into my own comic in the least repetitive or irritating way I could, but now I think I'll skip it altogether and save myself the trouble.
Same here. But if the recap panels are from an episode that's not from the previous episode, I'm fine with that since there are multiple arcs happening at once.
Just want to restate Walter's advice about Patreon! I did basically nothing other than create a Patreon a month ago, with only a "general support" tier. I didn't promote it either, since I had no rewards, but I did integrate it into my Webtoon page for the heck of it. Low and behold, someone found it and pledged to show they liked the comic and when I posted my thanks about it, a couple more people signed up. Still haven't added reward tiers. Still haven't officially launched it. It might only be a few bucks a month, but that's a few more dollars passive income than I would be making otherwise. I'm planning to make a more full patreon after I come off of hiatus with my comic in January. I'm not expecting huge response, but even a small amount I think will encourage me to keep investing in my comic. You really never know if people will support you until you try!
@@DrawnbyYannan Thanks for asking! I considered including the link earlier but honestly, I comment on Walter's videos so often I don't want to inadvertently spam my comic's link when the emphasis should be his videos. 😅 But I would be thrilled if you check it out! www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/neptune-bay/list?title_no=447891
Feel free to spam your comics all you want. If someone goes through the trouble of making a comic, they are more than welcome to throw their URL in the comments.
Definitely a ref sheet for characters. I'm more of an impromptu story teller but man did I learn my lesson to use ref sheets for the characters and their designs in advance TvT
I've been recovering from leaving my retail job for the past week and I feel like I'm finally ready to re-stoke my artistic flame and start on stuff! I always like watching your videos because it just, in general gives me inspiration.
This was a really eye-opening video. Im really not one to give advices but i think that its also important to enjoy while you're drawing, coloring, or lettering. Don't force yourself. Take your time. And if your art is average (like mine) Don't worry about it! This has happened to me my newest episodes/chapters are always better than the previous ones. Wow that was long. Overall love your comic and yourself. That's really important!
As an avid consumer of webtoons, manga, manhua and manhwa, I have to say that i prefer very long episodes/chapters. Sometimes less is more, but in those situations, just imagine how much more, more is!
I mean there's long and there's looooong. But I'm the same with novels. My OCD won't let me stop till I hit the end of a chapter, so when books have insanely long chapters, it turns me off, because I don't get that positive energy from finishing a chapter. Plus when it's shorter, it's like, that was short, I can read another. And that just keeps repeating until you don't realize you've read the entire book.
Yeah, that thing about having the first episode being like just the cover or something like that. I don't like it personally. If I click the second episode and I don't like it I just search for something else. But this is just me.
I actually started my comic for practice and expecting to quit after a few months, which means I really did not prepare as much as I should have once I decided to keep going. I think my advice is to have character ref sheets and COLOR them. Even if you are going black and white, still make an extra ref sheet with colors because if you ever decide to go full color (which I never thought I would but I did) it will save you from a lot of pain in the future! c:
That's the way to do it. My first 2 graphic novels where little projects that were just for practice and ended blossoming into full stories. Character sheets can be helpful. I'm bad though, even when I make character sheets, I still don't follow them...really need to work on that.
Soo this is ur birthday gift to me? I LOVE IT LOL For context, as u posted THIS video the clock turned to 10th Dec, and I'm happy I got this video as a unintentional but very much welcomed present
So cool to hear you talk about comics especially because I LOVE ghost bats!!! The style is so incredibly engaging and i love the story and character design!!
Wow I was going to start making a webtoon soon and this video magically popped up in my recommended. The advice in here is great, so thank you so much!
Thank you for making another really great useful video! As far my tips for before you launch a Webtoon, the number one biggest one I can think of is HAVE A BUFFER! It's so important if you care about being able to post regularly. No matter what you are planning as far as your update schedule (weekly, bi monthly, monthly) you really should have a buffer built up because sooner or later, life is going to happen and it will prevent your from working on your comic at some point. It's just a really good idea to be prepared for that. Also, you should have some type of social media set up for supporters to follow you at, whether that be instagram, twitter, youtube, discord, ect... It's just a good idea to make sure that your supporters can have a way to follow you, get updates, communicate with you or even send you fanart. :)
I'm trying to get into comic making and while this is only my second video, I have a feeling I'm about to dive down a rabbit hole. I really appreciate all of your great advice! I especially loved your Krita tutorial because although I've been using the software for almost two years now, I still have no idea how to use it efficiently. I'm so excited to dive back into comics soon and I'll be sure to keep you updated if you're interested in reading your fan's comics. Thank you so much for talking about things that for some reason no other youtubers I've found talked about XD
Thank you for this video! Lettering, my greatest challenge! I'll be watching your video on it, and I'm hoping to find or even make a font that fits and isn't a super common preset font. Amd again thank you for these super helpful videos!
@@walterostlie it's called "His name is Somewhat Stupid" , here's the link- www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/his-name-is-somewhat-stupid/list?title_no=655198
You: Dont clump a lot of words together without art. Me: Well shi-... Ill think about how to fix that one page later. Its a bad info dump but i just got then motivation to continue working on my comic. *cries* (Also side note. This was very helpful.)
hey man, just found out about your stuff and i must say i really loved Ghost Bats. It was just the kind of read i was trying to find between simon hanselmann work and the new sandman series. htnaks for that. also you channel rocks and it's helping a lot on my 'how to comic' knowledge! keep it up
so i was thinking of starting of my webtoon as a one-shot first more like a taste of what's to come in the series before i start mass producing it is it a good decision or do i just jump straight to the series without creating the one-shot first?
Can you talk about Ghost Bats in your next video? How much time did you spend on the story? How did you catch the idea of your comic? How do you create interesting characters for action comics? Also I love your comics!
Class video again Walter. Every video you release seems to be at the right stage for me and my comic, it's wierd 😅 I'm at that point where I'm thinking of publishing soon and this has helped me alot so thankyou🙏
Dang, I was just thinking of launching my WEBTOON at the end of December when you uploaded this. WALTER THANKS :) also ghost bats is amazing and like ur ghost bats shirt
I dunno if its a pet peeve but it is driving me crazy,, *Cough Cough* here we go..... Episodes or Chapters! WHICH IS IT!!! And don't u make me like outta cuteness of those puppies! That's blackmail XD Love the vid, I still find pacing hard XD
Hah. Currently it's episodes. I think it started as chapters, but they changed it to a more tv style name? Same thing with Originals and Canvas. It used to be Featured and Discover.
I just made 3 episode to be publish at same time and 2 extra episode to be color , and 2 story sketch 28 or 38max for page each And i just stop doing commission just to finish it all and publish it on next year end of January . And made patrion and send some printable art for every single character on it This is all my plan XD
I like the Patreon idea; I always thought you had to have so many fans to have one of those. Do you have advice on how to set one up for someone just starting out?
Just keep it simple. Get your info in there, write a bio saying what you've done or hope to achieve. Give links to your comic if you have one. And just do a simple $1 tier that says thank you for your support. build from there as you gain popularity.
As someone who's gearing up to launch his own comic, this video couldn't have come at a better time. Just curious though... Do you think 4 episodes are gonna be enough of a buffer to start off?
Depends. Do you mean you're gonna post 3 episodes and then you'll still have a buffer of 4 episodes? If so, then yes. But I'd try to shoot for those 3 episodes at launch if you can.
@@walterostlie I was planning on launching a 2 part prologue on launch day. That gives me 3 more episodes as a buffer. I can break the prologue into 3 parts, but I'm not sure if that'll fly. It is an anthology and the plot for the prologue sets the stage for every individual story to unfold. Or should I just add part 1 of the first story along with the 2 part prologue, keeping only 2 episodes in reserve?! I feel like it's a tough call!
I think you have to step back and look at what occurs doing the prologue and first episodes. At one point in the story, do you think a reader would say "I need more of this." or "I'm intrigued enough to sub." Try to get that up there on launch. I'd say also wait, and get 4 episodes in your buffer after your launch. You'll have to wait longer, but there's no rush, you'll be happy you have them later.
Welp looks like i have no choise, But to subscribe. XD Your amazing dude you help me alot and you seem like a interesting person. Ill definatly watch you more
First time commenting - love your videos, super helpful. I'm planning on starting a comic "series" that will be more of an anthology, so I can experiment with comic styles/stories/etc. to see what works best for me personally, and to share some of my shorter ideas before diving into my bigger, more complicated ones. I'm wondering how you'd recommend adjusting or referring to having an anthology in things like the main thumbnail, summary, etc.?
Ooof about the buffer... I've been struggling with that. I don't have buffers when I started posting, and putting out new chapters every month has been difficult. I've had to post a "sorry no new chapter this time" a couple times now specially on very busy months. 😔 Any advice on this when I already put a schedule of monthly posting? Thanks as always! Super helpful video! 💕
There's is nothing to say that you can't change your schedule. Take a step back, take a deep breathe, and figure out what works for your life and schedule. If you need to do every 2 months or make shorter chapters, do that. Yes, make your comic, but do it under your terms for best physical and mental health. You're readers will understand. The ones that don't understand, they can bounce for all we care. I would also say, don't post an episode that just says "sorry no episode" That's similar to just posting a teaser. If you think you're going to be on a long break, simply add an extra image to the last episode that says you'll be on hiatus.
@@walterostlie Ah yes, I guess it's just me putting my needs aside coz I think, "If others can why can't I?" In a way I failed to realize that everyone has different life situations, so thank you so much for your helpful reminder and suggestions!! I'll keep them in mind going forward! 😊💕
Ah, sorry, a cover is just a single pinup illustration, like the cover to a comic or book or magazine. A lot of comics will put a single pin-up as an episode and that's it, no story. So basically I was just saying, every episode of your webtoon should contain story content, panels, etc.
Hey Walter! I found your channel a few days ago and I have been binging your videos because they are all so helpful ! Thank you for making them !! I also have a tutorial request, could you also do video on all the assets you have prepared for a webcomic... Like you had mentioned in an earlier video about having the title prepared to add at the end of each chapter ? Again, thank you for making these videos !
I just did my launch on the 5th and honestly the Patreon thing has been bugging me! I’ve visited their site to “try” to figure it out but I get overwhelmed and keep putting off creating one 😭 bc idk what to even add content wise and I don’t want to overwhelm my workload
Hi there and thank you for your channel. I'm trying to learn all this and you're very helpful. My story talks about music too and here's my question: I didn't wait having 3 chapters before posting on Webtoon my story "Sekai no dreamers" because I was eager to share. Now that I have 3 chapters, would you advise me to re-upload those 3 chapters at once? I post every 1.5 month, it's manga and takes longer to produce. I have around 60 subs, 600 readers. So pretty low but I'm starting from nothing literally. All the best to you anyway, cheers
I don't think there's any reason to repost them. I suggest starting off with 3 episodes so there's enough to hook a reader, but since you have 3 up now, you're good to go. Now you just have to start getting people to go there and read those 3 chapters and sub.
Yea, some prologues can be painful to read. The ones with vague images and a lot of text to read. I'm okay with a prologue, but it has to be just as strong in the art/story/entertainment as main episodes.
Thank you for your tips and advice! Do you know why and when Webtoons Featured stopped accepting pitches online? They were probably flooded with entries, that would be my guess. ^^;
As far as I know, they never did. I first heard about webtoon in 2016 and they weren't accepting unsolicited pitches. At least on the American site. I am not sure how it started in Korea. I'm guessing when the American site launched, it was prolly populated with translated Koren comics. However, I'd make the argument, that canvas is their online pitch submission format.
Yea, I think if you have a consistent and healthy posting schedule on Canvas you could be picked up if you only post twice a month. However, I don't know if they'll let you post twice a month if you become an Original though. I think they like that weekly update schedule. But maybe with the money they give you, you can hire some assistants to help speed up the process.
Heya! I just finished my first episode, but i just feel like I'm a slow worker, and i won't be able to upload consistently. Is it possible to privatize a webcomic? Or is it possible to make an unlisted comic that only some people can see?
In the beginning, what do you mean by a teaser? Do you mean just a simple image or something? I made a prologue/teaser, but its about half of what you'd expect a normal chapter to be, mostly a proof of concept and getting some exposition out of the way and introducing one of the main characters in the process.
Yeah, like a cover image or a single illustration. The jury is out on prologues, it depends on how well they are done. A lot of readers are going to decide if they like your comic after looking at 5 panels. So you need to put your best 5 panels first. If your prologue has the same art and story vibe and style as the main story, then that's cool. But if your prologue is a lot of dialogue, weird abstract art, and no main characters, it's going to be a turn off for a lot of readers. same with WIP or concept art, think about movies, they never start the movie with this stuff and it's not usually in the movie at all. All the concept work can get posted to instagram or twitter, use those platforms for bonus material and a way to build hype for the comic itself. But Webtoon is a comic platform and should be focused mostly on the story. After you've established the story, you can start posting mid-season break episodes with Q&A, art, fan-art, etc. But start strong, not weak.
@@walterostlie I mostly put a small bit of necessary exposition, a bit of banter, and a stinger to tie directly into Chapter One. The dialogue isn't excessive, I don't think. I mostly wanted to put a prologue in the beginning because the concept is kind of out there, and I didn't want to lose some people, while simultaneously teasing other things. Thank you so much for replying to me. I honestly posted my comment not thinking anything would come of it. You are so remarkably helpful and I can't be thankful enough for that.
@@walterostlie You know, honestly, now that I think about it, I really don't need the prologue. I can say the same things through subtle dialogue, and tease the same things while doing it in a more interesting way.
Yea, you can...but make sure it's entertaining. The prologue shouldn't just be a big info dump. It should be a comic story. Don't give your readers a history lesson at the very start of your comic.
Oh, I was sorta joking. But I know when I watch someone else's video, they take so long to get to the point, drives me nuts. So I want people to be able to get in, get info, and get on to the video. But yeah, I was talking a little fast in this video :-)
@@walterostlie It usually drives me nuts when people taking to long to get to the point when they're talking nonsense! But you're not. You're very informative so don't worry about taking some breaks in between 😚
don't do: plan and plan and plan without ever starting do do: pick up your pen and start already all these videos you're watching are great and helpful but what's the point if you never start? a letter to myself basically ;)
Please compare the ad pay between tapas and webtoon and whether you think it's fair for webtoon to get 50% from each creator's. I'm not sure how many creators there are currently but i"m sure webtoon makes so much more money than the combined creators' earnings. Why is no one talking about it....
From what I can see, Tapas gives 70% to the creator. Granted this is more than Webtoon's 50%, It's not an insane difference. I'd be cautious assuming how much profit any company or person makes based on assumption. Remember, Webtoon/Tapas is actually providing creators with a really amazing service at zero cost. Creating and maintaining a website isn't cheap. Storing tons of graphic images isn't cheap. Just imagine the amount of disk space they have buy to store everyone's comics for free. Also think about the amount of bandwidth they have to pay for so that readers have a fast download speed. Webtoon editors also spend time looking at Canvas comics so that they can promote good comics, someone has to pay those editors. Take all that into account. Yes, Webtoon only does 50% to Tapas 70% but Webtoon has a much larger reader base, a much larger creator base, and they also do a lot to advertise their platform which means they are bringing in new readers via marketing that creators get to enjoy for free. It's similar to apartments. If you get an apartment in the middle of nowhere you can pay $600/month. However if you get a much smaller apartment in the middle of New York City, it's $5,000 a month. So, I don't really think it's unfair. Especially since you have the option of not using Webtoon. That's a really long answer, hope it helps.
@@walterostlie "Webtoon Entertainment's annual revenues are $10-$50 million and has 10-100 employees." Another website that estimated they make $502 million and have 240 employees. And 50% still is reasonable to you? 🤔
Honestly, I think it's fair. Also, revenue shouldn't be mistaken for net profit. UA-cam pays 55% and they are most likely making butt-tons of money. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter pay absolutely nothing.
Hey , I'm actually 13yrs old and have decided to create a webtoon .I have a stroy and some chapters are ready ,but I'm afraid I would lack consistency in the future as I'm not a full time artist .Some help here 🤔
Just create the comics and do what you can. You're young, so you'll be starting/stopping/finishing/giving up on/loving many projects. Just start something small and see what happens.
Thanks for your great tips. But at what point is a webcomic too long. There is a limit to the MB anyway, but isn't 30 panels better for a drama story, for example?
I'd say look at comics similar to yours that are popular and copy their panel counts. 80-100 panels is starting to get longish, but if creators make smaller panels they could start getting to the mid 100s even with the limits. That would be better as 3 or 4 episodes. In a perfect world 40-50 is ideal, but lower works fine.
I like the tips in this video very helpful, but I do have a question though. Should I get a copyright before putting my webcomic on the internet? Anybody who could answer or point me in the right direction I'd super appreciate it.
I have a story that nearing completion and I've been working to improve my art. Would it be a got idea to have a large number of chapters ready prior to launch? That way if i were to miss a deadline, i would still have a comic ready to read? Also, are there any places i can recruit artists? I'm trying my best but my art isn't progressing as fast as id like
I usually write out my entire story outline and then I script around 10 episodes, get impatient and start drawing. It's a bad habit and honestly I should be writing the entire thing first or at least doing a more heavily detailed outline. Do a few stories and you'll figure out what works best for you.
So if your saiding that my Webtoon Comic don't have likes also have two follows love it on the first ep but not new page here... What did I do wrong because I have no time to finish the comic page for this hoilday days they like to see but post it already be late... for Horror and Comedy on my new Webtoon series
The first episode will always have the most likes/comments. It start dropping after that. It's not that there is anything wrong with your story, people just get distracted or forget to come back. You just to tell more people about your comic if you continue creating your comic.
If you are just starting off with a near zero fanbase. than lite is prolly good enough with the single "thanks for the support" tier. Just to get it up and running. When you start feeling more comfortable and you have some fans/readers, switch to pro and add some tiers that are higher and that require work on your part like uploading WIPS or making a blog/etc.
Hmm, I suppose that is possible. You could do product placement in your comic. It can't hurt to draw. Build a press packet and send it to companies you think would make sense. See if any are interested in a marketing collaboration.
@@walterostlie haha sounds possible. How an artist can be selected as an Original and been paid in Webtoons? that's possible or they hire for other ways?

This is a personal pet peeve and wish other creators would take note: Leave some room from the top of the canvas. Some webtoons have an image, or text, right on the top and my phone (note 10) gets in the way of that. I also read an interesting technique where you highlight a comment at the end of each episode, make your readers feel special.
Again wonderful advice! I can't wait to work on my webtoon again.
Oh yeah, I still need to fix my episode 1...thanks!
I agree with this so much! Nothing like having to “hold/pull down” the screen to read the text or title when it first starts.
I have a phone that cuts off the top a bit too! That extra inch of space is a life saver
Excellent advice! I have seen a few Webtoons where they have an image at the very top and it can be hard to see. Leave a little gutter there. It's okay. :D
I'm guilty of doing that in a few of my first episodes. But I promise I've changed! 😂
For each main character, write "[character name] starts out [adjective], but then learns [lesson/new behavior]." For example, "*Malazu* starts as *skeptical,* but learns *to be happy and trust others.*"
Another example: My character Frieda doesn't trust herself.
A lot of great tips in there. Thank you so much for sharing and also taking the time to type all of that for everyone. You Rock!
Thank you! ❤
Wow those are very good tips, you should totally write a comic ;)
Oh gosh I forgot I wrote this 😅 My character examples are from my comic Blue Witch Malazu, which I am still reworking. In the mean time, read my other Webtoon comics “Now and Forever Nia” or “Locks of White.” Thanks for reading, and happy creating!
Walter my man, your comics DESERVE their own cartoon or even anime adaptation. Thanks a LOT!
That's the dream, seeing these stories grow pass what I can do on my own would be amazing. That's like the baby bird learning to fly and leaving the nest.
Indeed he's comic is interesting
Exactly! Thank you.

Definitely a ref sheet for characters.
I'm more of an impromptu story teller but man did I learn my lesson to use ref sheets for the characters and their designs in advance TvT
I am so bad with char sheets. I make them and never look at them after that. I really need to work on that.
I've been recovering from leaving my retail job for the past week and I feel like I'm finally ready to re-stoke my artistic flame and start on stuff! I always like watching your videos because it just, in general gives me inspiration.
Glad you're feeling ready to jump into the artistic fire! Get it!
This was a really eye-opening video.
Im really not one to give advices but i think that its also important to enjoy while you're drawing, coloring, or lettering. Don't force yourself. Take your time. And if your art is average (like mine)
Don't worry about it! This has happened to me my newest episodes/chapters are always better than the previous ones.
Wow that was long.
Overall love your comic and yourself. That's really important!
100% ! You're awesome!
@@walterostlie thank you!!!! You're awesome too!!!!!
This was so usefuI, Walter. I did everything you told against 😅😅
Hah. Live and learn, and always improving.

Thank you for all this great advice!
100% agree with all of that.
Thank you so much for talking about things that for some reason no other youtubers I've found talked about XD

so i was thinking of starting of my webtoon as a one-shot first more like a taste of what's to come in the series before i start mass producing it is it a good decision or do i just jump straight to the series without creating the one-shot first?
A one-shot would be a good idea, not just for readers, but also for you to work out any kinks in the story, characters, and design.
Can you talk about Ghost Bats in your next video? How much time did you spend on the story? How did you catch the idea of your comic? How do you create interesting characters for action comics? Also I love your comics!

Hah. Currently it's episodes. I think it started as chapters, but they changed it to a more tv style name? Same thing with Originals and Canvas. It used to be Featured and Discover.
I just made 3 episode to be publish at same time and 2 extra episode to be color , and 2 story sketch
28 or 38max for page each
And i just stop doing commission just to finish it all and publish it on next year end of January .
And made patrion and send some printable art for every single character on it
This is all my plan XD
That sounds like a good plan to me. Have an awesome launch!

I'm wondering how you'd recommend adjusting or referring to having an anthology in things like the main thumbnail, summary, etc.?
great video!
Thank you!
Wow I’m actually early today! I love your videos and comics!
That's funny, because I was actually late with posting it :-)
Ooof about the buffer...
Loved the video! I wish there were pictures of the things you mentioned though. Not sure what you meant by Cover Page
Ah, sorry, a cover is just a single pinup illustration, like the cover to a comic or book or magazine. A lot of comics will put a single pin-up as an episode and that's it, no story. So basically I was just saying, every episode of your webtoon should contain story content, panels, etc.
What advice would you have for a comic strip series similar to ones in newspapers? Would Webtoon be the best platform?
you’re advice is so helpful, i cant wait to keep carrying on planning my own comic rn!☺️

Just do the $1 support. Most patrons are there to support you, not get stuff.
@@walterostlie thank you Walter!
@@walterostlie Thanks a lot for your time I appreciate it!
That green person is cool! :D
The teaser or prologue episode is something I really dislike. I'm fine with epilogues but please, no prologues.
Yea, some prologues can be painful to read. The ones with vague images and a lot of text to read. I'm okay with a prologue, but it has to be just as strong in the art/story/entertainment as main episodes.
Thank you for your tips and advice! Do you know why and when Webtoons Featured stopped accepting pitches online? They were probably flooded with entries, that would be my guess. ^^;
I 'liked' the video when you called me to action.
It worked! Thanks, I appreciate you.
Can someone get featured if he/she posts 2 times a month. And can featured artists post 2 times a month( not 4). Love your vedios🥰🥰.
@@walterostlie thank you very much Walter.
Heya! I just finished my first episode, but i just feel like I'm a slow worker, and i won't be able to upload consistently. Is it possible to privatize a webcomic? Or is it possible to make an unlisted comic that only some people can see?
Congrats! Not via webtoon or tapas. You could upload to your own server.
Walter I'm afraid the quality of my comic work isn't up to par, is there any advice on how to elevate your work?
I definitely subscribe and like your vidro
Can we not upload a prologue before the main 3 episodes
Yea, you can...but make sure it's entertaining. The prologue shouldn't just be a big info dump. It should be a comic story. Don't give your readers a history lesson at the very start of your comic.
Always read your comic outloud
That's a good one.

all these videos you're watching are great and helpful but what's the point if you never start?

That's right! Better to start and fail, than to never start at all... at least with comics. Doesn't apply to jumping off cliffs.
Can you tell me the best time to publish in Webtoon
Hey ,
I'm actually 13yrs old and have decided to create a webtoon .I have a stroy and some chapters are ready ,but I'm afraid I would lack consistency in the future as I'm not a full time artist .Some help here 🤔
Just create the comics and do what you can. You're young, so you'll be starting/stopping/finishing/giving up on/loving many projects. Just start something small and see what happens.
Sure ☺️
Thanks for your great tips. But at what point is a webcomic too long. There is a limit to the MB anyway, but isn't 30 panels better for a drama story, for example?
I'd say look at comics similar to yours that are popular and copy their panel counts. 80-100 panels is starting to get longish, but if creators make smaller panels they could start getting to the mid 100s even with the limits. That would be better as 3 or 4 episodes. In a perfect world 40-50 is ideal, but lower works fine.
@@walterostlie Thanks for your help ^^

I like the tips in this video very helpful, but I do have a question though. Should I get a copyright before putting my webcomic on the internet? Anybody who could answer or point me in the right direction I'd super appreciate it.
I feel called out xD
I tend to have affect on people...
@@walterostlie but you have great advise thank you ! 🙏
You forgot the R In your in your title.
Ah, sweet! Thank you so much. Fixed.

Anyways, thank you for the tips! :D Crowded thumbnail club here...
I have a story that nearing completion and I've been working to improve my art. Would it be a got idea to have a large number of chapters ready prior to launch? That way if i were to miss a deadline, i would still have a comic ready to read? Also, are there any places i can recruit artists? I'm trying my best but my art isn't progressing as fast as id like
Check out my discord discord.gg/FufAeG3. Also reddit comic collabs. and finally penciljack.com
@@walterostlie thanks so much! I will
Hey Walter! Do you write out your whole script before drawing, or only most or a few of your scripts before drawing?
I usually write out my entire story outline and then I script around 10 episodes, get impatient and start drawing. It's a bad habit and honestly I should be writing the entire thing first or at least doing a more heavily detailed outline. Do a few stories and you'll figure out what works best for you.
@@walterostlie thanks!
@@walterostlie Thanks man your cool about Webtoon problem and people in joy the new page going
Would you recommend -Lite or Pro- for Patreon when first setting up and for the purpose of just support the creator?
If you are just starting off with a near zero fanbase. than lite is prolly good enough with the single "thanks for the support" tier. Just to get it up and running. When you start feeling more comfortable and you have some fans/readers, switch to pro and add some tiers that are higher and that require work on your part like uploading WIPS or making a blog/etc.
@@walterostlie thank you for the advice!!! Yeah I have zero fan base but maybe one day lol
Hi wal!
There's (other) way to monetize your comic in webtoons besides patreon? Like, I dunno, get a sponsor?
Great data as always Walter! Thanks!
@@Camicaturas Webtoon will find you by the comics you make. so if you start making a comic and upload it to webtoon or somewhere, a webtoon editor may see it and reach out to you.
@@walterostlie aah great! thanks Wal! have a nice day!
*makes 5 buffers*
*cant draw anymore*
Btw thanks for all these tips walter. I started uploading my webtoon "Apology Letter" and im still learning so these help a lot lot :")
Your comic looks great! You're doing wonderful.
What’s Patreon? BTW THANKS FOR THE VIDEO AND ADVICE ❤️. I saw you addressed what I asked last time. 👏🏾
patreon is a flatform where your followers, readers of fans can support you :') In which you give something in return such as illustrations, behind the scenes of your art works. You should check it out so u will get an ideas or more informations :)
Afro Ninja approved 🥷🏾🤙🏾
Walter I keep uploading I lose an insane amount of quality. I tried different settings but I keep losing quality. am uploading at 100 percent but still, it looks like garbage 🗑️
What are you drawing in, what resolution do you draw at, how do you export, and what do you use to slice your image up so you can upload?
May I ask, Sir Walter. When I upload, if I scheduled(webtoon uploading option) my buffs..
Will they be able to see it there as a fast pass?
No, only originals can do fast pass currently.
