  • In this Idaho BDR video, we ride our motorcycles (BMW F800GS and Honda Africa Twin) on the Idaho BDR (IDBDR) along the Lolo Motorway (NF500) in Montana and Idaho as part of the idbrd route. This is section 5 of the Idaho Backcountry Discovery Route (IDBDR, Idaho BDR). This section of road follows along the Lewis and Clark Trail. It is a 119 mile stretch of unpaved road running along the path taken by Lewis and Clark.
This route is not all that technical, but it has no-stop scenic views for the entire length of the route. We stopped part way through and camped before finishing the second half of the route the next day.
    Some history of this route:
When it was built in the 1930s, the Lolo Motorway replaced historic paths that traversed the ridges west of the Bitterroot Divide. Although narrow, rocky and slow-going, the route built with help from the Civilian Conservation Corps provided access into the mountains.
The route the motorway follows once bore the footprints of early Indians. The Nez Perce people (Nimiipuu) called the route “K’useyneisskit,” the buffalo trail. For them the
trail was a land bridge between the Columbia River Basin and the Northern Plains.
The Lewis and Clark Expedition struggled along these same ridges, on their journey west in 1805, and on their return trip in 1806.
In 1877 the non-treaty Nimiipuu followed the route in their flight from General O. O. Howard and his Army troops. In 1991 the long and circuitous route they traveled, including this segment, became part of the Nez Perce (Nee-Me-Poo) National Historic Trail.

I did the Lolo and the MacGruder a couple years ago and the Lolo was way harder. Monster erosion ruts we had seem to be gone. Your photos are so much more beautiful than mine I can’t help but wonder what I was doing wrong.
    Great job!

So. I did this in 2018. So it might have been before you. It's just so beautiful I wanted to share the video, even if it was old. It's an amazing place for sure though to go ride bikes. I also didn't film it all, there were some more difficult sections that I didn't get the camera turned on for. It was def more difficult than MacGruder was.

Thank you for this video. There are not a lot of views of that 500 motorway where you can really see the roadway and what to expect.

It's an amazing ride. This video is a few years old now, so conditions up there can change a lot year to year. It is really one of the most amazing rides you can do, and I have done a lot of riding to compare. I hope you give it a go. It's a pretty special place to go see.

I would also suggest you stop in the Ranger Station and just ask about the condition of the road. It also lets them know you are up there.

Wow! Thanks for taking me along! That is probably not something I will ever get to see in person, so thank you! That is really cool info about the post office...what is the Devil's Chair? Loved all the pics too and the drone shot of your campsite! Just breathtaking! 👍🏍😊💜

Devil's chair is that big granite rock, because it looks like a chair. Thanks for watching. It is a very cool area and it is sad more people don't get to see it, bit it being so remote is part of what makes it so neat.

Haha. Is Lewis and Clark's trip across America something that people over on that side of the pond don't know much about? I guess I take it for granted that everyone learns about like we do here. But no no no, they are not the same as Louis and Clark Kent. Haha. Lewis was not nearly the looker Louis is.

I think I watched a film about it recently, didn't they claim the land from the Mexicans?

    • @DeweyRides
      @DeweyRides  3 роки тому +1

@@HippoDrones Not exactly. Mexico and parts of what is now SW USA, was still under Spanish control. The US bought a large chunk of of what is now the Midwest US from the French, so lewis and Clark were tasked with going and finding a route through the newly purchased land and then on to the Pacific ocean. The parts that are now Oregon and Washington where not claimed by any of the European countries, it was all Native American land. There were a few French and also a few Russian for traders who were in this area, by for the most part this was all frontier and the only people where where the Indians here.
