    I do not want to debate the genetic and racial background of the Lumbees, but I went to school at UNC Pembroke, student-taught at Purnell Sweat High School, in Ms. McPhatter's class, and I spent several years in Robeson County, near the river and I can tell you that they definitely have there own distinct culture. They have their own dialect; you can tell it immediately when you hear it. But, most importantly, they are a good and loving people. Almost universally, they are good, kind and considerate people. I love them, I loved living in Pembroke, and I loved teaching them; They were so funny and kind. I'll never forget!

      Just out of curiosity what unique culture do they have. Everything they do is poorly stolen from other tribes. And a dialect is not a language what my tribe has and literally fought a war to keep is what a language is (Pascua Yaqui). And every one of these people I’ve met personally has been a racist fuckwit so your experience is the exception not the rule

      I agree, but there is only a certain percentage of African, European, and Spanish mixed into native tribes across united states. There are still pure natives (they still exist) that keep the traditions alive and passing this knowledge down to the next generation.

    • @char08fal
      @char08fal 4 роки тому +7

      Ry Hy Uhm yea for some tribes. But this and a few others in VA/NC/SC are not “pure tribes.” They are literally tri-racial: Amerindian, European and African. And the Amerindian itself is also more of a mixture of some tribes : including Cherokee, Tuscarora and other Siouxan and Algonquian tribes.

    Not accurate. They didn’t show such diversity in their pow wows. They are mixed with black, white, chickasaw, Croatian etc...some actually look more like the star of the show. I’m not knocking lumbee culture at all. I am just familiar with them. Their families etc. any Oxendine or Locklear is a “Lum” their English for lumbee, that’s right they got their own English and it is called lumbee English. There are a few that look more native. Also...they are NOT the largest tribe in NC. Cherokee is. But due to the cruelty and disparages we had as well...we had reform schools and forced adoptions. Not just trail of tears. I know a lot of displaced children. But many are of native ancestry and they aren’t accounted for. Lumbee last I checked was not federally recognized. I am cherokee and not lumbee by the way but respect them. However many members of the tribes do not. You only showed people what you wanted to show them and not what is. So to me that can be perceived as a bit racist. Some are black with blue eyes and they may have a cousin that looks white and another that looks native. That’s Bc they’re a melting pot of runaway freedmen, Croatian Indians and the English settlers . Chief Manteo lost to his brother chief Wanchese who wanted to scalp the settlers so manteo and Wanchese both fought a good fight. But manteo lost, was forced into exile and him and his white settler buds were forced to move. Hundreds of years later, freedmen slaves who were later considered to be contraband ...living out in hatteras, Nc ran to Robeson county and mixed with the manteo descendents and also that included Virginia dare decedents. I grew up in manteo. The good shit that you call a mystery...is a legend in our world.

      Freedman means "real" Indian! That's a racist term as well. The real Indigenous Indians were of so called "Negro" stock. Lumbee amongst other tribes are my bloodline and they consist of other tribes that intermarried. Waccamaw, Creek, Cherokee, Catawba etc...

      @@brooklynlady96 I have Cherokees and Lumbee DNA matches, bot only the Cherokee matches show Native American DNA, usually around 1/4. Lumbee are generally 1/4 African. They're still an AMAZING people and culture. In line with what the OP said, some(like the Lumbee Jones family) of them have trace amounts of Native leftover from the handful of Natives who married into the community, but so does the average African American it appears.
